Michelle Obama offered this wise advice to more than 1,000 teenage girls at the Apollo Theater in New York City: "Let's just be clear you don't want to be with a boy that's too stupid to know you're a smart, young lady and I want to encourage all of us as young women, as older women, we have to raise our own bars, you will not be successful hanging around people who drag you down... There is no boy at this age that is cute enough or interesting enough to stop you from getting your education." The Princeton and Harvard Law School graduate also encouraged the girls not to hold back from pursuing their goals due to concerns about the opinions of boys. She urged the girls in attendance at "The Power of An Educated Girl” panel to "Compete with the boys. Beat the boys." Obama also discussed the new campaign called "Let Girls Learn" focused on reducing the barriers that prevent adolescent girls around the world from completing their education. The initiative aims to bring attention to the 62 million girls around the world who are not in school and countering the economic and cultural pressures that lead to many girls dropping out ranging from forced marriage to the belief that educating girls is of little value. Raised in a working class family on the South Side of Chicago, Obama credits her own success in life to her access to a high quality education. As a teenager, she was admitted to Chicago's first magnet high school; an opportunity she eagerly embraced even though it required a three hour daily commute. During an appearance on Stephen Colbert's talk show, she said that the chance to attend such a selective school made all the difference in her life: “There were kids just as bright as me who didn’t get those opportunities, so I think about that every single day. That’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about not only international education, but education period.” #amightygirl #michelleobama https://www.instagram.com/p/CUPEymqJq9ToEV6yvKywBHGLXQYm3nOEFJa1pU0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Behind the scenes of House Hunters International - trying to make an authentic statement on "reality" TV
Behind the scenes of House Hunters International – trying to make an authentic statement on “reality” TV
In this household, Daddy is Parent-in-Chief and we need more role models like him on TV.  This was our #heforshe moment. We had to grab it tightly, with both hands.

When I wrapped the Resistance Series in July 2017, friends and family asked what I had planned for my next writing project. At the time, I had no idea my next adventure would take place during the winter of 1778. We were driving to visit friends during the holidays, and listening to a podcast in which the host said something like, ‘we rarely see history from a woman’s point of view.’ I thought ‘I should do something about that,’ and started thumbing through the files in my brain. Within minutes, the name Anna Asbury Stone popped up. I’d learned of Anna’s story while compiling family genealogy into a book for my parents’ fiftieth wedding anniversary gift. Anna’s story was right up my alley—it had elements of a thriller, and though it was set during a well-known period in American history, there was still much to be explored. The legend says Anna carries a vital dispatch to Washington which allowed him to thwart the plots of his enemies. How much could I learn about what was in that letter? Turns out—quite a lot! . . #americanrevolution #history #historicalfiction #daughtersoftheamericanrevolution #DAR #valleyforge #amightygirl #historynerd #revolutionary #revolutionarywar (at Old East Dallas, Dallas) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsI3cfFnIIS/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=tlhjr6gtkb9y

From A Mighty Girl's Facebook page: At only 12 years of age, British paleontologist and fossil hunter Mary Anning discovered the first known icthyosaur skeleton. She later found the first two plesiosaur skeletons and made numerous other important geological discoveries in the seaside cliffs at Lyme Regis in Southwest England. Born in 1799, the largely self-taught Anning first began searching for fossils with her father as a young girl in the Jurassic marine fossil beds in the cliffs. A lifetime of critical prehistoric discoveries and new understandings were to follow, but as a woman she was an outsider to the scientific community and not always credited for her finds. She was ineligible to join the Geological Society of London due to her gender, although her discoveries were critical to driving scientific inquiry into new explanations for natural history and set the stage for Charles Darwin's articulation of the theory of evolution a generation later. In 2010, the Royal Society included Anning in a list of the ten British women who have most influenced the history of science -- but many people likely know her best for the tongue-twisting poem written in her honor: "She sells seashells by the seashore." For adult readers interested in Mary Anning's story, we highly recommend the excellent historical fiction novel "Remarkable Creatures" at http://amzn.to/SjuptJ To introduce children to one of the world’s first paleontologists, Mary Anning, we recommend "Mary Anning and The Sea Dragon" for ages 5 to 8 (http://www.amightygirl.com/mary-anning-and-the-sea-dragon), "The Fossil Girl" for ages 5 to 9 (http://www.amightygirl.com/the-fossil-girl), and “Stone Girl, Bone Girl” for ages 4 to 8 (http://www.amightygirl.com/stone-girl) For older children, she's also featured in the new book "Finding Wonders: Three Girls Who Changed Science" for ages 9 to 14 at http://www.amightygirl.com/finding-wonders For a fantastic new doll for fossil-loving kids, we highly recommend the "Fossil Hunter Lottie Doll," which comes complete with a backpack of fossil hunting tools, for ages 3 to 8 at http://www.amightygirl.com/fossil-hunter-lottie-doll #amightygirl #maryanning
