It is also one of ten medicinal plants approved by the DOH. Ampalaya has long been used to treat different ailments, including diabetes and blood sugar level control.

Not everyone loves ampalaya, but maybe it’s just a vegetable that is simply misunderstood. 
“The Bitter Melon” by Dr. Jocelyn Francisco of Little Yellow Jeepney shows us how children and adults can handle feelings and emotions through the eyes of this bitter vegetable. It was not only fun to illustrate, but I learned a few things about mental health and well-being.

nagluto lamang ng tanghalian si inay, yung ampalayang nitibo na mapait. bilang isang batang ayaw ang mapait na gulay palagi na ako sinasaway ni inay na dapat marunong daw ako kumain sa kahit anong pagkain na ihahain sa hapagkainan. nung naluto na ni inay ang ampalayang may sarsadong itlog— itlog lamang ang kinain ko kasi 'yun lamang ang masarap sa‘king panlasa bilang apat na taong gulang na bata. nung nalaman ni papa na ayaw ko kumain sa gulay na ampalaya, umutang siya sa kapitbahay namin ng paborito kong hotdog para makain ko. at nang maubos/nasimot ko na ang lahat ay biglang tanghalian na agad. hinatdan ako ni papa ng baon sa paaralan ng ampalayang may sarsadong itlog at hindi ako kumain ng baon ko. nung uwian na at binigay ko sa mama ang baonan ko nagalit si mama nung nakita niyang di ko kinain ang baon na hinanda niya sa‘kin. “ma ayaw ko nga ng mapait na ampalaya e” usal ng batang ako. bigla na lamang dumating ang papa ko at napabuntong hininga na nangingilid ang luha nung nalaman niya na ‘di ko man lang nakain ang hinatid niyang baon ko. “anak pasensya na kung puro ampalayang nitibo lamang ang malalapag namin ng mama mo sa iyong plato katulad lamang ng ampalayang nitibo na gulay ang buhay natin anak mapait at hindi masarap. hindi ka rin naman masisisi ng iyong inay na ayaw mo kumain ng pinaka ayaw mo na gulay kasi sino ba naman ang gugusto sa mapait na ampalaya, pasensya na ulit anak kung mapait na buhay ang naihain namin sa‘yo ng inay mo”.

Bitter melon was on sale in the store, so I bought a ton, and I was like, 'How can I make this Homestuck content?' Lol.
