Oh gods they announced the casting.

Look at this poor tiny baby omg my heart is breaking
Anyway everything about Ampert’s story made me cry so hard. Absolutely heartbreaking. Like he’s Beetee’s son and was only reaped to punish his dad. And they made Beetee mentor his own son to certain death. A death that turned out to be incredibly brutal, terrifying and painful. Eaten alive by carnivorous squirrels until there was literally nothing left but bones. I cried so fucking hard at that scene.
Like obvi I knew he was gonna die, but this was a special kind of horrible. Poor Beetee in the Capitol and his pregnant wife back home, probably alone, having to watch their 12 year old child eaten alive by mutts

Haymitch intentionally pushing the other Newcomers away so they wouldn’t be punished for his actions. Haymitch promising Beetee that he’d look after Ampert in the arena even though he had no chance of winning. Haymitch rearranging the limbs of the dead tributes so their families wouldn’t see their mangled bodies on camera. Haymitch only killing two tributes, both entirely in self defense. Haymitch wearing some of the Newcomers’s district tokens to honor them. Haymitch running away with Louella and then Lou Lou’s bodies so the Capitol wouldn’t immediately take them. Haymitch sharing the chocolate he’d been given by sponsors with Wellie and Silka.
Haymitch, in the midst of so much pain and trauma, remaining kind and reminding people of their humanity.

the hunger games movies aren’t limited to first person perspective like the books. which means we will almost definitely get beetee’s reaction to ampert’s death

my new awfully depressing headcanon is ampert’s birthday was only a few days before the reaping.
he was still a little kid. his voice hadn’t even go through puberty changes yet. he had just turned 12 when his name was called.

haymitch didn't have to eat so hard after every character he cares about died... like what do you mean "who will sing your songs now?" "wyatt callow who's luck just ran out. i can't believe how hard it hits me" "whoever lou lou was she's gone now" "buddy? somewhere beetee's heart breaks into fragments so small it can never be repaired" "goodbye maysilee donner, who i loathed, then grudgingly respected, then loved. not as a sweetheart or even a friend. a sister, i'd said." like alright

What do you MEAN Beetee’s son got reaped as a punishment, Beetee had to mentor his OWN SON in the games (who he knew wasn’t gonna win because 12-year-olds never win), and his absolute BEST HOPE was that Haymitch would make sure he didn’t suffer when he died, only for him to have to watch his kid be PICKED CLEAN down to the bone while still alive by mutated squirrels who were programmed to kill HIM SPECIFICALLY so that Beetee wouldnt even get the solace that his son didn’t suffer??? What do you MEEEAAAN
And then after all of that while staring down at his bones Haymitch goes “buddy?” Like there’s still a chance he might get up because he hasn’t fully processed the horror of what he’s just watched

Personally, it's the fact that Suzanne chose to mention the second child at all. She didn't have to include that piece of information, but she did. Doing so complicated the OG trilogy, especially in Mockingjay. Katniss is fighting to get Peeta back. Finnick is fighting for Annie. There is no mention of Beetee having loved ones in the districts.
Katniss interacts with Beetee multiple times throughout Mockingjay. When Haymitch relays Plutarch's plan to rescue Peeta and the others, a plan that would expose many covers inside the Capitol, there is no mention of Beetee's wife or child.
So.
Why did Suzanne choose to include the mention of a second child? She didn't have to. Beetee's story would have been much cleaner if she hadn't. But she did.
She did this when we know that Snow had no problem sending the children of victors into the Games. She also did it when we know that Beetee was a part of the rebellion from before the Second Quarter Quell. We know he was working with Plutarch, who told Haymitch that the work to end the Games wasn't over and that they would keep fighting.
There's no direct evidence to confirm the fate of his wife or second child, but the very fact that Suzanne chose to include the mention when it only complicated Beetee's story more than it already was? Definitely an interesting choice on her part. Especially when you know that Suzanne doesn't leave things to chance or include things that aren't intentional. Names carry heavy meaning for a reason. She even included a blip of a line about the dangers of AI that contributed to the collapse of the modern world.
That's all to say that she included their mention for a reason when it would have been easier to say nothing at all. Which in itself says a lot.
also. why do i keep seeing people claim beetee’s wife and new baby were also killed? that wasn’t written anywhere.

the longer i sit with it, the more i think that the saddest (not without some tough fucking competition, obviously) realization about sotr to me is that almost all the tributes really, truly, did not treat the games like they had a chance.
in the original trilogy—and even in The Ballad—the tributes felt like they were genuinely scheming and training and vying to win. with every other games, it seemed like the kids held onto this hope that they would be The One to make it, the one to become victor, even if they didn’t always say it aloud. despite the odds, they clawed as close as they could to victory, even if it meant playing into the capitol’s game and sacrificing their honor or morality.
but in this one? they come into the training rooms expecting to die. even the careers, though they swagger about and act like hot shit, feel younger than the careers have ever felt to me before. they collectively seem more resigned and bitter than in past/future tributes. their motives were all so unified against the capitol in a way that was reminiscent of the 75th games—where half the tributes were already a part of an organized rebellion to begin with.
while the theme of ‘i want to choose how i die, i don’t want the capitol to use me’ is prevalent in every book, this quell felt especially grim and determined. i kept expecting suzanne collins to undermine the camaraderie she gave the Newcomers. i kept expecting someone to decide ‘fuck it, i’m going for it on my own and i’ll backstab whoever i need to to do it.’ i kept expecting betrayal and desperation and a true competition.
but no—like wyatt, knowing his odds and choosing to protect the weaker—like ampert, knowing he’s charming and smart enough to make a decent bid for victor, yet rebelling anyways—like maysilee, knowing she’s near powerless, but spitting in the capitol’s face anytime she can—like all the newcomers, knowing they hardly have a shot, but absolutely refusing to betray one another—
they remained steadfast in their hope to die dignified and honorable, to die fighting against the true enemy, and that makes it so much more heartbreaking.

Plutarch sure does like asking children to risk it all meanwhile he risks almost nothing every time.
