So this piece is the “Pemaquid at Noon” and it is a 12 x 20. I like that shape canvas because it allows a little bit more of the composition fitting with the broad spaces that the sea provides. I’d actually like to do a very large pieces with the ocean vista. But one has to have a client first so I’m working on it. Update on the cyber bullying. Yesterday I called the F.B.I. Cyber Bullying Unit to start my paper trail. I needed to know what steps were needed to take and what to do when this escalates. It seems this “Cancel Culture” is now the latest thing. Everyone needs to be aware that they are tightening the noose on our culture and turning you into a racist if you don’t comply with their demands. In my era we grew up with comedians like Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, Mort Sahl, Red Fox, Sam Kinison and Richard Pryor. They had great acts, they were dirty and disgusting and we loved them for it. Today Kevin Hart is canceled for a joke he did years ago. Dave Chapelle did a show for Netflix were he was making a stand;however, not like the old days he was a lot more raw. In the old days we could like or change the channel. Now the “Cancel Culture “ wants to control the content on the channel. Welcome to 1984...Orwell was right just it’s 2019. I though we would be at a more sophisticated time and place instead were clutching our pearls. When my son texted me last night concerned about these cyber bullies I realized I’m tilting at windmills and turned off the comments. I will continue paint what I want to paint and no one will stop me from doing so! I’ve posted “For Artemisia Gentileschi” 72” x 48”, oil on canvas. Artemisia (1593-c. 1656) was an Italian Baroque painter who was raped by her tutor and had to defend her honor in court. She was the first woman to be in the Accademi di Arte del Disego, know for her strong depictions of woman. “Judith Slaying Holoferns, 1614-20, gallery Uffizi, Florence Italy. Is one of my favorites. In my painting the angel of death holds a knife at a jack O’lantern with her leg bent on a huge pumpkin. This could be read as her holding decapitated head and foot on torso, but I didn’t want to show blood. So yesterday I painted out on Pemaquid Point LIVE with the Plein Air Painters of Maine. I was a little late because I had a zoom meeting in the morning. I did a live session and painted a piece that resulted. They won’t let me post it to the IGTV but I’ll post it later today on my website. I shortened it down to 28 mins 🤷‍♀️ I often say that painting is like meditation you look at the surface then you look deeper than you look deeper then you look deeper and you get a greater understanding as you go. And not everybody is at the same level and that’s OK. It’s also a metaphor for life in general. First you look at the big picture and you can see all of the ocean and all of the sky and the rocks and then you break it down into smaller and smaller parts. Color and line and the composition and the way you want to focus your attention. And then you start working on the niggly details which would be like the tasks you would probably have in your day-to-day life but if you concentrate solely on the little niggly details you miss the big picture. Notes on the day: The parking lot was completely full, people were having picnic lunches and sitting on the rocks and watching the ocean. I slipped in between a couple of other artists who were already painting on the rocks. I didn’t interrupt them. It was a beautiful day as you can see and perfect weather couldn’t have asked for better. Light breeze and Cool air and yet warm enough that I didn’t have to wear my jacket. A lot of people milling around. I will put up this piece on Pemaquid at Noon when is finished and put it in the AR viewer on my site. WIP I’m thinking this one is just about done. I’m going to work on it some more for the background chop which is incredibly complicated. - I will put the finished piece up on my site available for sale, once it’s completed it’s a 24 x 36 oil on stretched linen canvas. Framing it in a shadow box frame. If you live in #MidcoastMaine I can bring it out to your house for you to see, since my studio really isn’t going to be open until May. The first half of the little video is about the rocks and you can see as I progress that I was carried away so then I pulled it back and simplified the rocks at the end and the second half is about the background chop and then I did some tweaking also on the foreground water. So I have some more work to do on the background water and but the foreground and the rocks are pretty much done to my satisfaction - then moving on to the next piece which I’m all a tingle to start . So yesterday I went out painting with the #Pleinairpainters of Maine and they were all in Cozy Harbor on the deck by the restaurant and I chose to look back towards them from another location where there was an old shack. And then I got started on the painting and was told I should move my car and I thought well might as well move. So I went for a little tour around the end of the point Newagan point. Just a short jaunt, the peninsula was so long… 45 mins down from rte 1. Anyway the painting I started I decided I’d just finish up at the studio and I’ll post it when I’m done.
