Progress Report - 4/29/24

hello and happy birthday!

...is how this was going to start when I intended to post it this past Friday. But I spent my birthday as a side character in the hit 1996 movie Twister. By which I mean there was a really big tornadoful storm here, the likes of which I've never seen before. It's never a fun time when the words "historic" and "record-breaking" are involved.

But anyway! My birthday was a few days ago, and to celebrate I have a slightly belated gift for all of you!

A release date

That's right, we're back in business here in Speakerland 😁 I'm so relieved to finally return to some semblance of normalcy, and I'm very hopeful that I'll be able to get back to doing regular monthly updates again.

As for this one, the update will be going up on Patreon TONIGHT! I'll be uploading that momentarily, in fact. That means that, barring any strange game-breaking bugs or overly tangled code, the update will be out for public release on Tuesday, May 7th!

I just want to thank everyone one more time for your patience, and for all the messages of support 💙 it really does mean the world to me.

Me normally: Let people love what they love

Me, after a Test Match Special commentator expresses their belief that the new All Creatures Great and Small is somehow "better" than the 1978 version: This is pure insanity and TMS can no longer be trusted on anything, how can they even be trusted to know about cricket, do they have no TASTE

#Look it's fine that this show exists and people will watch it and like it and that's ok maybe it's just not for me #But that was like a statement purely designed to piss me off #There were lots of issues with the 1978 adaptation! I still vastly preferred the books any day!#And I actually initially had high hopes for the new one because they at least cast a Scot (albeit a Highlander not a Clydesider) as James #And the actors at least looked a little bit younger than Christopher Timothy and Robert Hardy #And thank god Helen actually sounds like she's a farmer's daughter and doesn't speak RP!#But from the half hour I've seen of it I've had to write off this new adaptation #For two major reasons #First of all there's Siegfried #Siegfried is one of the key central aspects of the vibe of the books and therefore key to any adaptation #Robert Hardy was too short and too old for the part but he lived and breathed the character #The twinkle in the eye bouncing off the walls and in and out of rooms followed by half a dozen dogs utterly full of life even when angry #But this new Siegfried is just sort of... Eeyore-esque; he comes into a room and you can see the flowers droop and the set turn grey #Siegfried was angry Siegfried was happy and the historical character he was based on was no stranger to melancholy #Since Donald Sinclair did commit suicide or rather self-euthanasia after Alf Wight and his own wife Audrey died #But this slow grumbly figure in the new adaptation is not Siegfried Farnon- the book character didn't grumble more often he exploded #And why did the adaptation give him a dead wife that's so weird? What could that possibly add to the source material?#And this brings me onto my second problem which is to do with women and age #Firstly I have no idea why they aged down Mrs Hall or at least made her look younger than a woman her age would have back then #But what really drove me mad was when Heriot goes out to see some old woman hill farmer in the episode I saw #And this woman is far too clean and young-looking and you can see that she's wearing 'natural' look make-up #And a perfect set of clothes that looked like they were straight out of the House of Bruar autumn collection catalogue #Say what you like about the 1978 adaptation but old women looked like old women regardless of whether or not they wore make-up #It may be that the better quality of television screens means that the 'natural look' shows up on screen more clearly than it would have #But natural look make-up was not really a thing in the 1930s and for old women Yorkshire hill farmers I doubt they'd have much on at all #They just don't seem to be capable of allowing people to look old and wrinkled and real or have bad teeth or unattractive clothes #And everything is far too tidy- everybody looks far too perfectly country and quaint #Anyway the moral of this story is of course that I always recommend reading the books because they're much better #than any tv adaptation; but if forced to choose at least the 1970s one felt real and yet didn't have to be grim either #Ok that's my rant over please do feel free to enjoy the show I just got annoyed because the opinion was expressed on TMS

#it's ok to reblog this post and ignore the rant in the tags I don't mind at all /gen #hi guys #got another load of trauma from school #and I am not dealing with it well at all my legs have been shaking so badly for 4 hours now #had a panic attack so bad that my face went numb and the edges of my vision went black and my legs gave way #I hate my teacher she's horrible god I can't even go into it here there's so much #I'm tired of getting abused at school I've been to half a dozen schools and have not gotten traumatised at ONLY ONE OF THEM #I have no adults I can go to about this #whenever I try to talk with her and the head teacher about the situation and why I'm fucking terrified of her she acts so patient and kind #whenever I'm alone with her she will yell at me about everything I'm doing wrong and continue yelling even when I'm in tears #she will berate me and put me down and insult me directly #when she gives feedback she always puts effort into making it hurt #the language she uses for negative feedback is never what a teacher should say it's always personal and uses your weaknesses to hurt you #I get really bad intrusive thoughts about her hurting me physically because of how terrified I am of her #the worst part is she acts nice and sweet whenever she's not picking apart my weaknesses and being cruel about my disabilities #I felt so sick after that I haven't eaten since #vent tw #trauma tw #listen to my gibberish boy #ggod I hate this school

I'm in a mood right now and I'm going to load my queues back up soon so my blogs are more than just bland salt, but truly fandom was a mistake, I don't think I'm having fun with it at this point, and I want to just go back into my hole where I reblog or RT fanart and shitposts and just avoid anything with a whiff of discourse.

And, yes, that means avoiding the legitimate conversations, too, bc a lot of people don't know how to act in the mentions of those. I want to be ignorant of fandom shit, the real world already sucks so much ass.

How am I totally unable to describe or ask for anything I want when getting a haircut

Went in to the person I’ve been seeing for like 20 years with hair I’d been growing out for 8 months and actually, unusually for me, was really digging and was just like “I like how loose and wavy it is, I’m liking the length, I just want to clean up and add layers to the back” and I didn’t say the word “shag” which I should have and I was vaguely like “I guess?” when she said “bob” and when we talked about which part of the front of my hair we were evening the back with we were clearly talking about WILDLY different things because now my hair is six inches shorter and stick straight and exactly the same as when I was 24 and I have been having a complete and utter emotional meltdown since I left the salon and didn’t have to pretend to be fine with it anymore

#it is a good haircut that looks good on me #and i want to rip every hair out of my head #i'm just trying so hard not to go shave it all off #i cut huge amounts of hair off all the time but i actually wanted that hair this time :((((#it was so wavy and loose at the ends #and it was feeding the teenage part of me that always wants to look like a man in the 70s #i know this objectively a better haircut than i had in every way #but apparently i'm just going to go keep having a temper tantrum about it #me looking at pictures of the half dozen times in my life i've had a bob and loved it #and reminding myself that i've just stockholm syndromed myself into liking messier hair because i've been so bad about getting haircuts #that i have to grow to like the messy grow out or i'd just be miserable all the time #this whole post could be edited down to the first 12 words

Y'all! Having girl friends is just the best. Is there anything better than a group of women? 😭

One of my friends is moving to Australia to get married at the beginning of next year. I talked her into coming to a Halloween party last night (she's not usually a big partier) and at some point the question of what she'd be doing for her bachelorette party came up. And she was like well I don't know anyone there so I won't be having one. Of course I was like "not if I have anything to say about it!" And the other women there who have only met her a couple of times were immediately like alright let's go! We have a WhatsApp group now and a whole list of things to figure out that may include a sleepover at my house, and I have other women helping me plan so I don't have to do all of it. It was just so pure and wonderful and I'm so glad we're going to do this for her.

I can't believe people tried to tell me in high school that other women were catty bitches who were always going to backstab me. I'm so glad I didn't internalize that

learned today that last week we made an incredible amount of profit, much more than expected, but this week average sales were down due to being closed for two public holidays so multiple casual employees got their hours cut to make up for the shortfall. i want to bite someone.

#i am so fucking mad rn like what the fuck.#yes yes the All-Powerful Line must be appeased but these are real peoples' livelihoods that are being fucked with!#i've got like a 24 hour contract so i'm not as affected but i had to watch one of our uni student casuals lose like five hours this week #which is a lot when hours have already been tight for ages #we've already lost like half a dozen of our best and most experienced to other stores because they just couldn't afford rent #and they're the lucky ones tbh #'nobody wants to work anymore' no nobody can afford to work a handful of hours under shitty conditions for shitty pay anymore #biting and hissing and maiming #this post is hypothetical any resemblance to persons living or dead is complete coincidence and i cannot be fired for typing it

#I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT ALL FUCKING SEMESTER #I HAVE SAID AT LEAST HALF A DOZEN TIMES THAT I CANNOT WAIT TO TEAR HER APART IN THE COMMENTS #i had a makeup clinical today with a different professor and it was the best clinical experience of my life #(also we did post conference at barnes and nobles and there was a starbucks there and i got a cupcake which was awesome)#i've been working on this thing for like 45 minutes at this point #i think i've answered all the 'the professor was a dick and a hardass and condescending and unhelpful and didn't seem to give a shit that #she's been a nurse longer than i've even been alive so us first-year nursing students are not nearly as experienced as she is & her job #should be to help us and guide us and not to reprimand us and chastise us for harmless things she doesn't like' questions #now i'm on the 'we've had to do double the amount of paperwork as the other clinical groups because god forbid the school lay out to the #professors and students what we're supposed to do and when we brought it up the head of the department basically went 'fuck you'' questions #i've ranted about this shit so fucking much and it's so nice to finally get to submit it (anonymously) to the school where they can #actually see how much they suck and how shitty an experience this is #god i miss my old school #(i'm glad im not there tho bc if i was living on campus i wouldn't have gotten a second cat and flynneas takes precedence over everything)

Night 2 in a row of not being able to sleep because my pelvis hurts too fucking much. I took ibuprofen before bed, but it didn't do shit, much like it didn't do shit for me throughout all of yesterday. So sick of there always being something that hurts bad enough to disrupt my sleep.

#pain #chronic pain #pretty sure it's endometriosis but no doctor will ever entertain that idea #i had one tell me i have a bunch of cysts after an ultrasound. but when i asked what i can do about that she literally just shrugged #she said something like 'having a half dozen dime-sized cysts isn't cause for concern'#like. ok. but what if that's what's causing the pain?#I've known several people with ovarian cysts who get them removed and suddenly have no pain #but because it's a fEmALe RePrOdUcTiVe SyStEm issue doctors never fucking listen #and i don't have insurance so it's not like i can go pester every obgyn in the area until one listens to me #but I'm looking into booking shit through the health department because it's like $50 without insurance #planned parenthood also does checkups for cheap/free but it always gets burnt down as soon as it reopens so...#like they just rebuilt this summer and are already closed due to severe damage done to the building -_-#i just want to go one day without being in a stupid amount of pain. is that so much to ask?#if it's not my back it's a headache. if it's not a headache it's my knees. if it's not my knees it's my pelvis.#it's no way to live.#and the answer i get time and time again is 'get more active and take ibuprofen for the pain '#cool. great. I'm extremely active. i run like 2 miles a day and move a lot at work. which I'm not supposed to because of my disability.#i take so much ibuprofen that I'll probably have some organ failure from it later #I'm doing what you said doc. when's it work? how many years of 'being more active' until it ends?#I'm literally not supposed to exert myself in any way because it can make my brain problem worse. yet it's what everyone says will cure it #and sure. running will sometimes make the lower back pain go away. but that's just pain from sitting in a chair weird.#the actual pain never ceases. laying down is the only thing that helps that.#and then I'll get the pelvic pain and nothing eases that. not pain meds. not heat. not laying or standing in certain ways. nothing.#so here i am at 7:30am on my day off trying not to scream because I've been up since about 4am doing anything i can to ease the pain

#this is the inside of my boyfriend's Anglican Church that he is priest of #I had the chance to go up and see him this past weekend #it was a really nice time and I showed him so much home free #it was the most time that I've gotten to spend so far #I enjoyed every moment of it but I'm also exhausted from it #round trip included six hours of driving #spending time with his congregation who are all lovely older people and there's only about a dozen of them #but that's still a drain of energy #even just the time alone with my boyfriend is a huge drain of my social battery at this point still #I mean we haven't even been seeing each other quite a year yet #it won't be until June when we first met so a little over half a year so far #point of the matter is that I'm a bit tired and almost hung over feeling from a social overload #also I'm tired from driving that much #don't get me wrong I appreciate the freedom driving gives me but if I was rich I would hire a driver

I haven't been able to wear short sleeves since probably September of last year, but it finally warmed up a bit the last few days. My chinchilla is very confused because she usually tries to nibble and groom my sleeves. Today she just sat there licking my hand.

On the one hand: I do dearly love 95% of DM'ing D&D games

On the other hand: My current campaign/table I DM is officially down to just one player, and one of the greatest agonies the universe has created for me is the "Trying to find players who are interested, then trying to guess whether they'd actually jive with myself & the other player's personalities and playstyle, and that whole process requires a whole lot of extroversion and social skills my introverted socially-anxious ass does not have or enjoy" part of DM'ing D&D games

#Wit rambles #The two real BBEGs of DnD: scheduling and finding players #(made worse by the fact I'm solidly 50/50 when I've let people I wasn't already internet-mutuals or irl friends with into my games #it always ends on an extreme - either ''I had to kick the player out for half a dozen compounding reasons''#or ''This random person and I instantly clicked and became close friends within two sessions and they're literally my housemate now'' 😆)
