starting off in 2013, colby had an... interesting choice of a costume. i think he's supposed to be a sexy lumberjack.

i'll be honest, even tho the costume itself isn't anything more than clothes he already owned, the idea is interesting. so i'll give him the benefit of the doubt with this one. also... he looks like a baby so i have to forgive him.

what’s your top 5 fav books u seem like a well read individual with good literary opinions

!!!! thank you for asking!! though mmmmmm i’m honoured that you think this of me, but the last book i read was a 100k fanfiction about lesbian cowboys so like. depends what you mean by “good literary opinions” 

(i do recommend that fanfic tho. it’s v well-written and you don’t need to know anything about the original content to enjoy it)

in terms of Actual Books?? jeez I haven’t had to list my favourites in a while! they’ve definitely changed so this will be educational for me as well

1. Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. While we’re on the subject of fanfics, this one’s got every conceivable delightful trope in it. Son of the President (who is not Trump, I can’t stress enough, but a democrat and a woman from Texas) falls in love with the British prince (also not the real British prince, just in case you were curious). We’ve got some mutual pining, some enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, somehow fake dating and secret dating both at once, trapped-together-in-a-closet-full-of-UST, you name it. Plus this book’s super readable and very well-written. I smiled the whole way through except for the parts where I cried, and at the end I did both. DO recommend. 

2. Dreadnought by April Daniels. In a world like ours but with more superpowers, a trans girl unexpectedly inherits the powers and name of the most famous hero. EXTREMELY good, but more pain involved than the first one, and the smiles are harder-won (but when they come they are TRIUMPHANT). I would die for Danny. 

3. Dracula by Bram Stoker. Now for something completely different, a classic rife with latent homophobia and sexism! But I love it because it’s a gripping read (at least to me, but then my ADHD has been hyperfixating on this book for the past five years, so I might be skewed in its favour here), and an EXCELLENT example of unreliable narrator and sketch main characters. I always feel like some unholy cross between an archeologist and a private detective reading it. Did Mina and Jonathan kill their employer for his money? What’s going on between Seward and Van Helsing? Is Dracula really the villain? Is he even real?? So many questions, I have fun trying to answer them. Also, vampires are cool and Quincy is hot.

4. Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien. Of course, that’s a given. I’ll be the first to acknowledge its flaws, but it’s just such a rich story. Like, reading it is a challenge because Tolkien, but it’s also so... idk, rhythmic? It’s slow but in my mind that’s almost a virtue. If you can get in the mindset for it--extreme patience, bordering on entishness--it’s truly delightful. A meditative experience, if you will. Not to mention: it has Sam Gamgee.

5. Once Upon A Marigold by Jean Ferris. A story with everything but the kitchen sink, spiritual successor to The Princess Bride (the movie, at least; it has significantly less nihilism than The Princess Bride book does). The main character is a boy named Christian who was raised by a troll in a cave full of crystals, who falls in love with the misfit princess Marigold across the river, and it just gets wilder from there. It’s a fun read, technically a kid’s book but I still enjoy it at 22, full of delightful imagery and delicious twists that aren’t necessarily unpredictable, but certainly are entertaining. I had to include a childhood classic somewhere in this list, and this one’s it.

Honorable mentions go to William Shakespeare, Victor Hugo, and Blue Balliett (if you haven’t read Chasing Vermeer or Hold Fast, i highly recommend you do), and if we’re counting poets I’m partial to Byron (disaster mentally ill bisexual, spiritual twin) and Keats (finally a good man who was also a good poet).

I do have some others! They’re not as close as I am with Sock (@thewitchofpixels) but I still value them a lot!

First we have my brother Leslie (@tinytilapia)! We met through a Homestuck roleplay server back in the sexy year of 2014 when we were roleplaying our fantrolls Anissa and Kuroji. Although we don’t always agree on everything he’s still someone I view close enough to the point where I call him family! He got me into astrology on the lowkey but also he’s someone who I can have a more obscure or weird sense of humour around. He’s a huge joker but we can absolutely be sincere with each other about stuff that’s bugging us and I really appreciate that balance. He’s part of my friend group with Sock and we all balance each other’s personalities out super well. I’m glad he’s a part of my life, he’s definitely helped shape me to the person I am now. I also love his Southern aesthetic, he can 100% pass as a cowboy and nobody would bat an eye. He has a really good sense of ranch fashion, so props to him for that.

Second there’s my brother Jesse (no tumblr to my knowledge)! I met Jesse in the same space I met Leslie, but Jesse came at least a year after I met Leslie. He’s definitely the more outlandish and intimidating one out of my two older brothers, like how he once just decided to bike 100 miles because he was “bored”, but he’s also super ride-or-die for the people he cares about. Although he knows a lot of the drama in my life, he’s usually someone I turn to when I need to jest about the situation. We’ve absolutely had our severe ups and downs of our relationship but in the end I’d still do anything for him and he’s always there to support me. Also he looks absolutely stunning in a dress, I wish I could pull off that kind of look.

Next there’s Philip (idk his tumblr either)! We don’t talk nearly as much as we used to, mainly because I think he took a big break from a lot of social media, but he’s in my friend group with Leslie and Sock and I always have a good time when he’s around! He lives fairly close to me and I wish I could hang out with him more often because he seems so cool and charismatic??? Like the four of us all did suburban PTA mom roleplays at one point and literally every line he delivered was an absolute banger. I wish he and I talked more because he’s so cool!!!

Then we have Lizzie (@shortlifelongart)! The absolute fandom grandma herself, I met her in May 2018 when I was getting into Viva Pinata! She was the first person in the fandom I started talking to, and I’m super happy that she was the one for that role. Ever since then, we’ve absolutely stuck together through whatever life hits us with, whether an independent issue or one that we face together. Outside of the bad, she and I also rev to each other about fandom content and our OCs! She’s been extra kind to let me use her daughter in my fic as well~ We’re Team Adult, and I’ll always have her back no matter what! We ride together, we willyemoji together.

There’s also Moodle (@moodlemcdoodle)! She was my second Viva Pinata fandom friend that I got to know better through Lizzie, and I use one of Moodle’s characters in my fanfic as well. Moodle is super peppy and always gets my engines going when it comes to content hype! We also stick together through whatever issue we face as well, although usually it’s more ADHD-related topics (we run an adults-only ADHD-related Discord server). I love listening to Moodle’s hot takes on vampire lore, Danny Phantom reworks, and Viva Pinata ships/headcanons!!! She, Lizzie, and I are all mod squad on my 2nd Viva Pinata server! B) Mod Squad Rise Up!

I also have Rosie (@roseiie)! We met through kinning when I found her kin Discord servers and she noticed we shared a lot of sources! We eventually became canonmates for certain kins and that led us to be super good friends!!!!!! She’s such a ball of pure light and is one of the sweetest people I have ever met omg... We both love each other a lot and I’d absolutely do anything for her to see her happy 😭 she’s so precious and she always brightens up my day when we talk and have loving each other hours! She gets all of my uwus and nothing less!!!!!!

Another friend I care about is an IRL so I won’t drop his name, but I view him as a younger brother (even if I haven’t exactly expressed that to him yet...)! We met through school and bonded over our love of math (and STEM topics in general) and the fact that both of us had our own stories and OCs that we were writing! He’s super smart and when I think I know it all he absolutely humbles me when he talks about the kind of stuff he’s researching into for class or as an extracurricular. I get to fixate about speedrunning with him, and I feel like I’m able to open up around him despite the fact that I rarely get to see him in person nowadays! I’m grateful to have met him when I did, tbh.

so i'm actually thinking about this now bc i am nothing if not predictable garbage: what if billy wasn't the vampire prince (still prince of my heart tho!), but goody was? some very old French family of vampires that fled persecution from the church in France and came to Acadia, collecting loyal recruits as they slowly built a name and a fortune for themselves in North America. Goody was a hunter and trapper who saved one of these vampires when they got lost in a blizzard; in desperation the vampire bit him, but Goodnight found it a boon to his work (his eyesight had been starting to get a little fuzzy in middle age, and now suddenly not only can he see perfectly, he can see in the dark!) and the vampire found him a loyal friend and business partner. he lost most of his fortune when they were expelled from Acadia, but he had strong "family" connections in Louisiana, so he moved there to manage some of the business there. he went to war somewhat unwillingly, and against the wishes of his people, because he saw Northern aggression as a threat to their way of life, same as the British had posed almost a century earlier; he was of course a gifted marksman, and for a long time he justified the killing to himself, but in the end, he came from a background that ultimately respected life - first as a hunter, and then as a vampire from a clan that came to prominence during the age of chivalry. they weren't wanton killers, and he wasn't either; it was all just such a waste, and the more he saw of the war, the more he realized just how much it was motivated by greed and disregard for human lives (of many kinds), and he became disillusioned with it all.

and then there's probably a precipitating incident in which he leaves the Confederate army (is Goody a deserter? did he see it all through and it just haunts him? how did he meet Sam? maybe Sam saves his bacon? lol is this actually mentioned in the movie and i just forgot?). he goes on to meet Billy, who restores his faith in humans and whom Goody almost immediately falls for (maybe BILLY saves his bacon at some point???) and Billy knows what he is but that doesn't matter to him, and they probably have had lots of conversations about Goody making Billy into a vampire, and Billy always teasingly turns him down, and it's all just a joke they share, until it isn't, until Rose Creek, until Goody begs Billy to leave the night before the battle, knowing it's suicide and knowing he won't be able to protect Billy, but Billy won't go, so Goody goes, both because he genuinely doesn't think he can handle this and in some small part of him hoping to lure Billy away from the danger. but it doesn't work and he comes back for Billy, just in time for Billy to die like he knew and feared would happen, and as he crawls, wounded, back to Billy and holds him while Billy slowly dies, he offers (begs) one last time because he can't, he can't go on without Billy, an eternity without him, this isn't how it was supposed to be...

and this time billy says yes.

I have finished "The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires" by Grady Hendrix. 100% recommend. Loved it from beginning to end. Still fucking hate Patricia's husband. I also have opinions about the . . . erm. . . "vampire" cause that . . . that was new. I liked it, but don't wanna give anything away, just know that it does not sparkle.

Got this cute teapot as a game prize from the baby shower I went to on Saturday. Its so cute. I sadly do not have many loose leaf teas so I may have to rip open a bag to see how fine the mesh on the strainer is. It looks super fine, but I have been fooled before. Finally finished Netflix's "Cowboy Bebop" live action adaption. As far as anime to live actions go this one was good. I loved the anime growing up, and even though it's been a while since I've watched it I do remember a decent amount of it to compare the two. I think Netflix did a great job with this one. The actors are great, waredrobe (especially Faye's) is on point, and the settings and ships look amazing. Changed some plot things around and added some things for fuller character purposes (ie: Jet's family) as adaptions tend to do, but I liked it. While it doesn't follow the anime to a T, it has the vibe and aesthetic. It's the anime without actually being the anime. However, Ed is my favorite character so I kinda wish they'd popped up sooner, not as a lead in for a Season 2, but hey small thing to nitpick.

Hey there! and yeeesss, i’m so glad you’re gonna give anime a try! there are so many good stories and plots in anime which dont exist in western media so it’s a great mode of entertainment! so as for recs, lemme copy and paste my previous list and update it to answer your question!

Neon Genesis Evangelion - i admit it has a slow buildup but be patient because you will really find it intense and see how it’s not your typical mecca anime. so far, i think it seems to be a deconstruction of the genre and has alot of psychological themes

Boku no Hero Academia - it’s a recent anime and it’s really good! i think it’s on course to becoming a really big anime that will last many seasons at this rate. the story is about a world where majority of the inhabitants are heroes cause they have quirks (powers).. and the premise is that the main character doesnt have one but he wants to be a hero so watch and see how the story unfolds!

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures (currently on Stardust Crusaders) - macho anime with an excellent plot! the guys are hot haha and many of the memes are in japanese so watch the original subbed but if you prefer not to read, the dub isnt bad. it’s very memey but the story is really entertaining and has unpredictable moments

One Punch Man - a parody of a superhero anime. tbh this isnt really binge-watch material cause it’s like a running gag and the story unfolds after episode 5 so i’ve just been watching this during my cardio days in the gym. but it’s really funny and a good anime

Hunter X Hunter - this anime is popular and it’s about hunters. so the beginning has the protagonist wanting to be a hunter and then he meets some fellow hunters along the way. it’s one of the highest rated anime in MyAnimeList (the RottenTomatoes equivalent of the anime world) so yeah check this out!

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (Battle Tendency) - SONO CHI NO SADAMEEE JOOOOOOJOOOOOOOOOOOOOO the type of anime that’ll get you wanting to go to the gym and lift. that being said, it has a really amazing story

Shingeki no Kyojin / Attack on Titan - it’s the Game of Thrones of anime imo.. like it’s so GOOD.. it will just make you gag after every episode!!! it’s so intense and there are really badass characters. and the plot is really brilliant. like if you think season 1 was like WHAT THE FUCkk.. wait til season 2! this anime is crazy and exciting. not for the faint-hearted tbh cause it can be graphic and disturbing (also dont get attached. they could die!) but yeah, this anime is popular true and some say it’s overrated but that’s because it really deserves all the recognition and success it has for its amazing plot

Love Live! School Idol Project - i honestly just watched this like out of curiosity and just for kicks. i was not expecting to love it but after episode 3, i was like wait??? wasnt this anime supposed to be fun?? why am i crying?? so yeah, it’s super good, touching, entertaining and sweet! and the songs are really catchy and good.. TBH this anime is like so gay since there are no men (except Honoka’s dad) so yeah it passes the Bechdel Test with perfect score

Love Live! Movie - the conclusion to the anime! 

Love Live! Sunshine - i watched this like a few months after finishing Love Live! cause i loved the original girls and i was worried i wont like these girls.. but honestly, you will appreciate them. and it’s EVEN GAYER.. and is soo good too!

Kimi no Na Wa - universally lauded and recently released! it’s the best film released in 2016 imo. i swear it’s really next level storytelling

Rurouni Kenshin - i think i watched this anime twice/thrice.. It’s so suspenseful. it’s about samurais. and this anime made me interested about Japan’s history. it’s kind of a period drama with amazing fight sequences. and it’s critically acclaimed. it’s my father’s all-time favourite anime

Rurouni Kenshin OVA - it’s a prequel. also more violent and tragic than its anime counterpart.. like it’s really different from the series. but it’s so good. you’ll find out how Kenshin got his iconic X mark from here!)

Ghost Stories - THE DUB IS A MASTERPIECE! THE SUBBED IS SHIT. TRUST ME. the DUB is the popular one too cause it’s the superiour version. You really have to see this one. the anime bombed in Japan so the english dubbers got all the rights for the anime and they gave the go signal for the dubbers to do whatever the fuck they want and the end result is fucking hilarious. it shits on the Scary Movie Franchise tbh

Puella Magi Madoka Magica - i swear do not be deceived.. it is a really intense and surprisingly dark anime with excellent plot twists

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun - super funny anime. if you need a laugh, this will really lift you up. i watched the first two episodes in sub and dub back to back.. and i can vouch that the voice actors for the English dub are excellent. it’s actually even funnier.. but if you prefer subs, then that’s fine. it’s just the lines are more humorous, expressive and have more variety :) Nozaki’s voice is also attractive in the dub.. it’s still very Nozaki imo. this anime pokes fun at the shoujo manga yet still has romantic elements. it’s mostly comedy though

Jigoku Shoujo / Hell Girl - angst, tragedy, philosophical anime analysing humanity’s hatred, need for vengeance, and suffering. Futakomori or the 2nd season is my favourite but it’s worth finishing the entire series. 3rd season is very painful to watch though and you dont have to watch that one tbh if you dont want to lol

Yu Yu Hakusho - occult, spirit world, ghosts, and fighting. you most probably have heard of this

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters - 1st series starring Yugi. iconic!

Digimon - can be very intense! better than Pokemon imo

Cardcaptor Sakura - this is also suspenseful. like the premise is essentially that Sakura has to catch all the “monsters” that were freed from this book. and it’s up to her to “capture” them and put into cards. magic, fantasy, and beautiful animation

Ranma ½ - this was so funny but the ending was disappointing cause it got cancelled apparently.. i really hope this will go out of limbo and give us a proper ending like InuYasha did but i doubt it

8. Book recommendation: !!! yeah i’m... not gonna be chill about this. (bypassing the quick, obvious  recs: American Gods, Fight Club.) first: Vicious by V.E. Schwab, it’s about two assholes who give themselves superpowers and then try and destroy each other, & the dynamic between the two main characters is one of my favorite things in most books / media, plus it’s a fairly minimalist writing style which i’m always here for. second: first five books of the Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny. fantasy with a slightly noir bent to it, he was pretty innovative for his time integrating modern / fantasy / mythological elements into his writing and Amber is the finest example of that, plus Corwin is one of my favorite protagonists of all time. the boy’s got tons of issues but like would i love him if he didn’t, & he’s basically a demigod but he excels at the ‘gods as men’ thing that i wish i could pull off better. (plus this is a dude that inspired the likes of George R. R. Martin & Neil Gaiman. you know the dedication in American Gods to Roger, that’s to this dude, he’s one of the finest sci-fi fantasy authors and he’s so forgotten that it breaks my heart.) AND three: the Lighthouse Duet (Flesh & Spirit / Breath and Bone) by Carol Berg. this lovely woman has written some of my favorite books & she also exists in somewhat obscurity? her novels are dark as shit and protagonists flawed as all hell, but this specific duology is some of her tightest story crafting. high fantasy but heading into more of a victorian era, wicked dark magics at play and a scrappy little drug addict magician who hides out in a monastery to try and hide from the Man. it’s some good, good shit. OK IM DONE NOW
