kafka twirled her champagne and stared. not like a deer in headlights, but like a building being faced by a bulldozer. tall, imposing, and otherwise intimidating if not for how easily it was going to be taken down by something so small. something that should have been insignificant compared to it.
empathy was scarce nowadays. she knew that well. she noticed, more and more, how people gravitated towards cruelty; towards the thrill of hurting and being hurt. she would laugh at such sadistic displays.
but where cruelty was usually her field of expertise and empathy was something she'd scoff at, she couldn't help but feel as if they were hand in hand tonight. it was like getting stabbed in the gut while being comforted for the pain it caused. it was both merciless and forgiving, in a way that made kafka's blood rush to her head from the sudden onslaught of anger that was quickly brushed to the side.
was himeko hers? no, of course she wasn't. kafka made that part of their little agreement clear. after nights spent together, clandestine meetings, and hushed voices; she made sure to let her lover himeko know that it meant nothing.
she had no right to be upset. not when himeko left her side hours ago; not when himeko looked up from her conversation with the white haired girl with a red stripe; and most definitely not when himeko smiled at her.
kafka gripped her glass a little tighter. maybe she wasn't the cruelest creature in the universe, after all.

As a strong Braxiatel and Romana fan, I would still like to announce I still dislike Gallifrey: Beyond and will pretend Braxiatel never got eaten by a space clown and Romana not caring about the situation at all.

don't try to fight what's not your fault. let go, reach out; the choice is yours to find. inside you've got the light to guide. your fate decides the roads you're going to find. relax, slow down, let hope decide. even though it's hard to forget when you can't afford love chasing all your thoughts, you know that         YOU'LL BE ALRIGHT IN TIME ✴

Hestia had never been the type to work to convert new sponsors around the clock, but between Cress' extra help and her desperation to save Slate, she was finding herself on the evening of launch, a cocktail in her hand, her hair done up, and in a dress that was far too tight-fitting to try to find more. She smiled through the discomfort--physical and emotional-- as out-of-touch Capitolites asked her the same questions and made the same comments about her son in a merry-go-round.
This was far, far more of Cress' territory, they'd all openly admitted it, but there was a certain untapped potential in the grieving, desperate mother angle that Cress couldn't quite fill. So she was here.
She was fielding a pointed comment from a man in a gem-encrusted bowler hat when she noticed someone approach out of the corner of her eye. For a second, she hesitated-- it was Cyrene-- but she continued. Cyrene was almost certainly here to win people over for Callisto, but she knew better than to show any cracks or breaches in etiquette in front of a donor. "Cyrene, so nice to see you, have you met Copper Capaldi?"

THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUCKS
WHY DID WE NEED TO HAVE TWO WORDS PRONOUNCED THE SAME WAY, ALMOST IDENTICALLY SPELLED, WITH COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MEANINGS

During Nix’s longest catatonic episode in the wake of the car bomb,  she would have what were coined at the time as ‘lucid breaks’.  These breaks occurred seemingly at random intervals and consisted of the apparent return of Nix’s motor functions and mental clarity.  There were largely impulse-driven and difficult to predict.  During these,  Nix would mostly have delayed reactions to her trauma  (memories shooting forward,  phantom pain from her injuries,  delayed panic etc),  or suffer violent outbursts both against herself and those close to her.  It was during one of these lucid breaks that she attacked her father,  or would attempt to harm herself — though occasionally she could be seen to have ‘recovered’ from her catatonia,  in the sense that she’d almost appear ‘normal’ and ‘predictable’.  Grant would find her watching an old cartoon she used to like,  or with a book she’d once read in her lap,  despite not actually reading it.  There is nothing typical about these breaks,  though,  as the double murder she committed at 13 was also,  in-part,  due to one.  That and her fight or flight kicking in,  no one truly knows,  and Nix never told.
During her adolescent years in incarceration and under constant scrutiny by those abusing their duty of care,  these lapses where often used as a means to ‘prove’ how she was faking her psychomotor syndrome as a means to manipulate the doctors and psychiatrists working with her,  though the theory was never proven.
Most recently,  in the wake of having her home blown up with her inside of it by Riddler,  Nix has slipped back into catatonia for the first time in years.  The trigger has shut her down,  though her one lucid break and energetic burst was spent with the box dye and the scissors she took to her hair.  She’s always been one for recreating herself as the need arose,  and so she used what that ‘lucid break’ gave her for this purpose.  It was the most logical thing she could have done in her mind,  as well as the safest.  She’s no longer a child;  Nix’s urges were likely for her to return to her cocaine addiction,  or violence... she instead kited herself toward a subtle form of evolution,  and effectively attempting to ‘kill’ what she could of he re-traumatisation.

not to be controversial bc I know this is like…not in line with shifting opinions on fanfic comment culture but if there’s a glaring typo in my work I will NOT be offended by pointing it out. if ao3 fucks up the formatting…I will also not be offended by having this pointed out…
‘looking forward to the next update’ and ‘I hope you update soon!’ are different vibes than a demand, and should be read in good faith because a reader is finding their way to tell you how much they love it. I will not be mad at this.
‘I don’t usually like this ship but this fic made me feel something’ is also incredibly high praise. I’m not going to get mad at this.
even ‘I love this fic but I’m curious about why you made [x] choice’ is just another way a reader is engaging in and putting thought into your work.
I just feel like a lot of authors take any comment that’s not perfectly articulated glowing praise in the exact manner they’re hoping to receive it in bad faith.
fic engagement has been dropping across the board over the last several years, and yes it’s frustrating but it isn’t as though I can’t see how it happens. comment anxiety can be a real thing. the last thing anyone wants to do is offend an author they love, and that means sometimes people default to silence.
idk where I’m going with this I guess aside from saying unless a comment is outright attacking me I’m never going to get mad at it, and I think a lot of authors should feel the same way. ESPECIALLY TYPOS PLZ GOD POINT OUT MY TYPOS.
