Catch him busy with some lyrics. He’s definitely the kind of guy who wants to be distracted, but knows he should focus on what he’s doing; my headcanon is that Marv is ADHD king. You meet him in the middle by painting and doodling on his arms. The feeling of the brush stroke is just subtle enough to be a pleasant background stim without distracting him. Trolls tend to be left handed, and Marvus is too; if you’re right handed, you even get to sneak peek at his screen, and if you’re left handed you can face the other direction and lean your head on him. Imagine gently tracing the troll musculature of his arms (he’s not flexing or anything tho, especially not for compliments and adoring praise). I really like the idea that trolls have plates on their skin, kind of like a mix between a beetle and mass effect’s turians? So the skin underneath is super ticklish. He loves when you paint secret splashes of your color on those secret patches of skin. He keeps the paint on him for as long as he is able. 

You, working on a project that requires both of your hands (drawing, writing, knitting, etc) and him hand feeding you snacks (and he messes with you, pretending he's going to feed you a cricket or a grub, occasionally he surprises you with a kiss). Maybe he sticks his finger in your mouth here and there. He gets up and roman soldier hemlets you once he’s really starving for your full attention. Just juggalo things 😌❤️

Marvus gets sleepy tired disorder after tour, and he’s trying so hard to stay awake, mumbling sleepy nonsense and jokes at you, becoming more and more incoherent. He snores in his sleep, and those snores turn into snuffling little purrs as you stroke his face and trace his facepaint.

Idk just. 😭❤️ I'll have some more of these later i think. It's been rough lately my dudes, it's all about the comfort rn.

I would ask of ye, clowndaydreams-to bequeath upon me the clown secret moirail techniques! how would our hiveswap clowns put on the pale moves? do they like being the one to be calmed or the calmer, or are they good either way? I'm eager to see ghb, slamzy n hotdogs moves- I bet all of them have a mean pap n swaddle technique.

This. This inspired me and I have too many notes that are all decently half-baked and tweaked as I go along. I implore any of you to confer with me on this but I have a good starting point.

I think there are 3 distinct ‘pale languages’ (like love languages) that most palemates go by. Most good moirails have an idea as to what to do for all 3 categories but every relationship is different and everyone has preference and etc. Usually there are 2 main ways a pale quad will deal with an mental breaks. (I mean this in more of a Partner A does either x or y while Partner B does y or z way). So let’s go down the list. For easy understanding, A is the calmer while B is the one needing to be calmed/calm-ee. Read more for scrolling sanity.

1.Physical Touch

Best exemplified by the shoosh-pap. This technique is regarded as the most publicly acceptable way of calming a pale partner while in public as it is not *too* intimate. It is regarded as akin to a peck on the lips in public by human comparison. Intimate but not too intimate if you will. The desired affect will still happen based on the receiver. However, as with most things, there do exist other ways of calming your diamond down. Things as subtle as a hand squeeze or reassuring shoulder grab can be enough when accompanied by a shoosh(or grunt/chitter/growl/etc.) When in private, this can escalate to things like feels piles, cuddling sessions, and openly clinging to the other as they go about what they must in the hive. The touch is the most important part, as that reminds B that A is there as well as the feelings just the thought of them(A) can bring them(B). Clowns that prefer this method are Marvus, Gamzee and GHB.

Marvus tends to do affectionate hugs/dogpiles to prevent a moirail from physically doing anything. He guides them away under the guise of ‘needing them for something’. Once they are away from prying eyes, he grabs them and grounds them with assuring noises and rubs. They’re usually pretty gentle unless he really needs to restrain them. 

Gamzee does default to the shoosh-pap, shy about showing full affection and really only knowing that form since that was the only one he’s seen in public. He eventually learns other ways, but that method is a comfortable zone for him. He is partial to dogpiles in private and just reveling in his moirails touch once fully comfortable in the relationship.

GHB is more of a shoulder-clapping kind of troll. It’s his way of showing support for whatever they decide to do next. He trusts their judgement unless they have proven incapable at that specific moment. He may also rub his thumb on their shoulder blade for added effectiveness.

2.Distraction

This one is more abstract in terms of what normally goes on in it but I will give a bunch of examples. The touch-averse trolls tend to favor this language because there isn’t much to do other than guiding their diamond’s attention away from the issue. This can range from small gifts and sensory toys to popping their headphones on them with some white noise and guiding them through some small task(like breathing or something). After certain intervals A will ask B if they need to continue or change the item/method. This is also a more acceptable form of pale affection in public, but worse than a shoosh-pap. Clowns that prefer this method are Rapsta and Kurloz.

Rapsta has sensory toys out the wazoo on a normal day. He likes occupying his hands while focusing on things like appointment scheduling, song writing and generally chilling. His favorite is a fidget cube that he will hand his diamond if they get too overwhelmed. 

Kurloz tends to use his chuckles to literally force them to think about something more relaxing. Sometimes he will even project breathing exercises into their noggin with the command of ‘BREATHE’. 

While he may not prefer it, I love the mental image of Marvus using this method with squirt flowers, chewable sensory toys and pies. It would be hilarious. 

3.Isolation

This is a somewhat more concrete method. It is simply setting up your pale partner up to be comfortable and letting them stew for a few hours. This can be setting up their favorite game and leaving a snack stash, prepping a picnic for them to go on with their lusus when you know they are stressed, or swaddling them and staying semi-nearby for when they want cuddles/transition into something else. This is the second/third most variable method, but a popular one for the independent yet stubborn moirail who is ‘totally fine’ but you know will break as soon as something mildly inconveniences them. Clowns that prefer this are Chahut and Hotdog. Hotdog has perfected the shoosh n’ swaddle as he calls it. He kinda turns you into a blanket burrito. He has you lay down on a blanket, puts a small pillow under your head, 2 body pillows on either side of you and wraps you up to chill for a while. It’s just tight enough that it would take a bit of effort to escape but you can still semi-freely move around in it to do whatever he set up for you.

Chahut isn’t the type to force her diamond to talk about anything, but will set up little things that they have to do on their own so they have to cool off. Like commission them to make something for her, setting them on a walk with DuckMom because she’s ‘busy’, making lunch before leaving on ‘errands’. Stuff like that usually works like a charm. So there you have it. All of their pale techniques. If you would like to know what x clown would do with a moirail that responds to x method/language, please don’t be scared to ask. :o)

Working on a farm has given her steady, reliable hands. She’s very tactile and learns by doing more than anything and has stellar muscle memory. She isn’t super great with things that require more fine detail or a more delicate touch, but do you really see that stopping her? Of course not. You have the mug to prove it. 

Prehnite Memory: How good is their memory? Has it always been like this or did something happen to make it this way?

I’d say she has a pretty good memory. Maintaining a farm requires just as much planning as it does work and she is pretty sharp when it comes to keeping track of everything that needs to be done and making sure it gets done. 

Ruby Craze: Are they a passionate person or do they tend to be more down-to-earth?

She is a salt of the earth kind of woman who tends to get more passionate on the behalf of others than herself and also when her stubborn/competitive side gets activated. The latter tends to get her more riled up more because she does have her pride and this town ain’t big enough for the two of them.

Despite having big old clown hands he is pretty deft with them being a performer and all. He has a lot of grace for his size and he has capitalized on it. Not to say that he doesn't absolutely use the assumption that he isn’t for some good old visual comedy, i.e. acting like he’s about to drop the pie he’s about to get you with.

Prehnite Memory: How good is their memory? Has it always been like this or did something happen to make it this way?

While some things get outsourced to his people, he tends to notice and remember a lot more than he lets on. From the beginning of his career, he’s learned to focus on the details because it’s the little things that lead to a polished end product. Plus, mentioning a small detail or two is a very simple way of making someone feel special, which can mean a lot when trying to make an impression on the right people. This was more important when he was first starting out, but it’s a skill he’s kept in his pocket. 

Ruby Craze: Are they a passionate person or do they tend to be more down-to-earth?

The idea of him living in this big ass mansion that’s completely decked out while wearing designer loungewear and still doing the occasional “stars! they’re just like you!” while just ordering take out or something bit that celebs occasionally do kills me. He does project as more down to earth than he is, and for all we know, he might genuinely believe that he is. Seeming that way makes it easier to keep his cards face down. He is genuinely very passionate about his music and his career in the very typical artist fashion and that tends to be the “safest/most common” way he expresses it.

I would say both but for different reasons. I would say he is pretty dexterous from all of that typing and fucking around with electronics which has given him pretty fine motor control. Which goes out the fucking window if he realizes mouth ran ahead of his mind in which case he is more likely to fumble or drop shit. 

Prehnite Memory: How good is their memory? Has it always been like this or did something happen to make it this way?

He has a pretty solid memory provided it’s something he’s interested in, otherwise it might not stick the same way. Things he is interested in like tech, his job, his friends, his hobbies, that he will remember with no problem. Things outside of that, like whether or not he took the trash out? Not so much. 

Ruby Craze: Are they a passionate person or do they tend to be more down-to-earth?

He is pretty down to Earth and does take some pride in seeming pretty chill and easygoing. He is more passionate than he lets on and you can see this in how he downplays some of his interests. He has a bit of a temper that can come out in the heat of the moment and there are definitely things about Alternia that bother him a lot more than he lets on, but he doesn’t really know of a way to direct that passion that won’t get him culled, so he just kinda. Chills. Things that are more of a slow grind tend to make him lean more depressed than angry.

Dialectic Identity? Thoughts on Fozzer, the Page of Heart:

OK this is gonna be shorter than Marvus obvs but Fozzer DID give me a good amount to think about, so here goes

Fozzer outright identifying as a dialectical materialist is exciting for a couple reasons. There’s a lot one could say about dialectics and Paradox Space in general (I’ve been trying to write that script for about a year) but here I want to focus on the Materialist half of that, because it immediately reminded me a lot of @arrghus’ idea of the notional/material divide between aspects.

Ever since the Extended Zodiac, we’ve been wondering if the way the Aspect wheel is laid out might suggest some relationships between Aspects, either original to Homestuck, mirroring the relationships the Signs share in the traditional Zodiac wheel, or some combination of both.

Arrghus’ essay series proposes a model for how those relationships might work, at least in part. I’d suggest checking it out for the full picture, but here I want to focus on the divide I find clearest and most compelling: That between the Ideal/Notional Aspects and the Material/Physical ones.

The gist is this: The top five Aspects (Mind, Hope, Breath, Life, and Light) are more closely aligned with the World of Ideas, and so those bound to them tend to be more concerned with the ideal, abstract, and imaginary. The bottom five (Void, Doom, Blood, Rage, and Heart) are more closely tied to the material, physical, and real.

If you’ve seen my prior writing on Homestuck, you might note that this dovetails easily with Gnosticism’s old cosmology of reality as divided between an imaginary world of Light and a physical world of Darkness. That said, this isn’t a hard binary--Blood obviously refers to some concepts as well as physical experience, and Breath obviously links to some things that happen in physicality, even if those elements are by definition elusive and insubstantial.

Space and Time are an even split, as much conceptual law to be deciphered as they are physical element of reality to be experienced. It could well be that this reflects most strongly in the perspectives those Bound to each Aspect are given to, as opposed to an underlying reality of the Aspects themselves, and in any case all twelve Aspects are necessary to describe a full picture of reality.

One of the most exciting possibilities this model raises for me is the idea of Aspect “Mirroring”, which is essentially a different kind of relationship Aspects can have. Aspects that are Mirror each other vertically, for example, might express the same ideas through the filter of the Ideal vs. the Material--reflecting the hermetic/magical principle of “As above, so below”.

Heart and Light are a pretty good way to express the relationship between vertically mirrored Aspects, as it turns out. Consider:

In Gnosticism, “Light” refers to directly to Information/Ideas, as the world of Light is the world of the imaginary. This is where “Platonic Ideals” live--the perfect imaginary version of any object, from which all physical manifestations of that object are derived.

Humanity gains the ability to access this world, the self-aware conciousness necessary to think, when the Goddess of Wisdom Sophia descends from that realm and imbues us with her Light--the light of curiosity, of wisdom, of the power to know. The light of the soul.

In this way, we can think of the Soul--the Heart--of living beings as their inner Light, expressed throughout their lives in the realm of physicality. And we can think of Light/Ideas as abstract concepts, that can only enter reality proper through the doorways created by the self-expression of individuals, as enabled by their soul.

There are a lot of ideas and concepts that Dirk’s soul seems consistently inclined to express onto reality. The shades, the concept of “being a Bro”, the idea of the Hard Anime Dude, Stoicism, the pervasive homoeroticism innate to the Greek ideals he’s generally shaped by, etc.

The clearest example of this might be his sword, which is itself a physical object seemingly ripped directly out of the “fake” (read: imaginary) world of anime. An idea, made physical, through the sheer expression of will manifested by Dirk’s soul.

This is what makes his katana so powerful:

It’s quite near to being a physical expression of our collective idea of the “Perfect Sword”, much like Bro sets an impossible ideal of “Perfect Manhood” that Dave wrestles with living up to. This might give you an idea of some of the more direct ways Heart’s conceptual toolbox could be exploited or weaponized.

The point here is that just expressing the idea of a “Bro” is extremely important to Dirk, and expressing the idea of “Cats” is similarly important to Nepeta and Meulin.

In the same way, Fozzer seems like an acutely intense expression of a political Persona. A philosophical idea, expressed in the physical world as an intense commitment to an associated identity. His shovel is an expression of that identity, much the same way Dirk’s katana or Nepeta’s claws are expressions of theirs.

But then again, Fozzer’s identity ain’t exactly stable, is it?

Before we talk about The Thing That Happens, we should note that as much as Fozzer seems to genuinely believe in his communist philosophy, he mostly seems interested in it as a means for self-expression, rather than an actual political movement with direct goals and results he’s looking to achieve.

And even though he’s very intense and earnest about it, Fozzer seems inclined to exploit his own identity in somewhat self-serving ways. Unintentionally or no, he more or less uses his ideological speechifying to conscript the Reader into doing work for him, therefore inviting the reader to Serve him through Heart, for Fozzer’s own benefit.

This, coupled with his strongly noted cowardice, leads me to consider him a Page. But my real point here is that even if a lot of us here on Tumblr find Fozzer’s ideology appealing, Fozzer seems less invested in ideology proper than with the identity it comes with--and even here, Fozzer isn’t exactly being portrayed as unambiguously Good and Correct.

Even if he’s preferable to the alternative. Sigh.

Let’s talk about the thing.

[WORLDBUILDING INTERMISSION]

So the biggest surprise of this friendsim was that we stumbled onto what’s basically a swell of Scratch energy just...hanging out under Absence Park, apparently?

Which is. A lot. This energy resets our conversation with Fozzer and changes his personality, which we’ll get into in a minute, but first I want to speculate: How the hell does this thing exist at all, and what does it even mean? There’s a couple of possibilities.

Since this is essentially Time-coded Scratch energy we’re dealing with, @blindrapture pointed out that it could have something to do with the Handmaid, which I’d expand to include Lord English--and though I doubt it’s directly linked to Scratch himself, since he’s not too associated with Time the way the former two are, he may be aware of or able to use this...”glitch” in reality.

It’s also possible this is a natural consequence of a Scratch, and pockets of leftover Scratch energy like these are present in some locations of Post-Scratch worlds. For that matter, it could be a consequence of John’s retcon powers, which act like the scratch in some ways and might have had consequences we don’t yet fully understand.

Finally, given the language, I suspect that the hole in Absence Park is actually just a hole into the Void, leading to the Furthest Ring, much like Roxy’s windows. This Scratch energy seems to have entered the Furthest Ring, and is presumably writhing there until circumstances allow it to vent out through this particular entrance to reality.

What are the implications? Who knows. If this is a hole into the Void, then this is another avenue through which Hiveswap’s cast might be able to exit Alternia and find a new world.

If the Scratch outbursts are recurring enough, then we have at least one way for our heroes to “Time Travel” and basically save scum to try and achieve optimal desires results, like saving a troll friend who gets killed by going back in time for example.

That’s probably the biggest takeaway to me, because having a way to time travel built into Hiveswap’s text already makes me that much more sure that no matter what kind of carnage and brutality our beloved troll friends get subjected to, we’re ultimately headed towards a happy ending where probably nobody dies-- I can reasonably see the possibility that even antagonistic figures like Ardata and even Trizza could be saved, under these circumstances.

Ok back to Fozzer.

So the thing about “Post-Scratch” Fozzer is that I feel he’s being dismissed somewhat due to his admittedly unsavory politics. This still strikes me as a very genuine and direct expression of Fozzer’s Classpect inclinations.

Fozzer is still taking a very materialist view of reality here, for example--he’s interested in the actual physical history of how this system evolved, and considers understanding that history necessary to understanding society.

And however he disagrees with you, his instinctual response is the same. He storms off after verbally thrashing the Reader, but its interesting that he does it the same way both times: By imposing identities onto the Reader. Hilariously, Fozzer is unwittingly owning alternate versions of himself, too, and unwittingly inviting self-owns is basically the core of the Knight/Page aesthetic.

So really, Fozzer’s core personality is much the same--what’s taken place is a binary flip in the persona he relates to the world with. In one reality, he conveys the ideas of the hopeful revolutionary underclass.

In the other, he projects the identity of a happy and willing member for the Empire’s war-machine--the joyful slave, the pain of his own exploitation cushioned by a strong sense of societal purpose and identity. Note how the shovel easily parses as a strong symbol of this identity, too--a triumphant tool with which to serve the empire, rather than an ironic symbol of oppression.

I don’t think we should be hasty in assuming one Fozzer is more real than the other, even if we’re inclined to like one of them more. Especially since Fozzer works in Absence Park and seems familiar with these lights, meaning these scratch shifts might have been happening to him for a while.

The two Fozzers give us a fascinating window into the nuances of Heart, and indeed we’ve been told this sort of splintering of self can be common to the Heartbound by Calliope. Their opposing ideologies present us with a self-contained dialectic, in fact.

A dialectic at its core is a search for truth carried out by contrasting and comparing two diametrically opposed ideas, which in Hegel’s dialetic at least are defined as the Thesis and Anti-Thesis, respectively.

In Hegel’s understanding of the term, we can only truly understand an individual idea (say: Fozzer) by examining the tensions and similarities between these two opposed perspectives.

And these tensions are usually resolved not by one winning out over the other, but by achieving a Synthesis that combines he best traits of both.

Maybe because of that, I find the fact that we can only “win” by embracing the “Happy Slave” Fozzer unnerving. It’s hard to say how Fozzer’s path will evolve going forward, but given how central the idea of conflicting opposites is to his expression of his Classpect, I highly doubt we’ve seen the last of “Comrade” Fozzer.

So, I guess we’ll just have to see how it goes?

[Closing disclaimer: I’m not entirely sure how different Marxism’s Dialectic Materialist approach is from Hegel’s Dialectics. For instance, I’m unsure if it also uses the “Thesis”, “Anti-Thesis”, “Synthesis” model Hegel describes, or if I’m accidentally mixing the two.

@gamblignant8 on the Perfectly Generic Podcast described Dialectic Materialism as being Hegel’s Dialectic applied with a focus on physical reality, mixed with an analysis of humanity’s historical evolution on the physical plain.

Cursory Wikipedia research seems to bear this out, with Marx even describing Dialectic Materialism as simply the opposite of Hegel’s more philosophical and idealistic take on the idea, which Marx regarded as full of “Mysticism”. As a Hopebound more comfortable with the ideal than the material myself, I suppose its no surprise I find Hegel’s dialectics more immediately approachable and comfortable, for now.

What I’m saying here is, take everything I’ve written about dialectic materialism here with a grain of salt: I’m trying to do my homework and make sure I have the facts straight, but it turns out philosophy can get hard to sum up, especially when you’re trying to reconcile it with a fantasy metaphysics system. Feel free to clarify if I’ve messed details up. ]

Comfort: What helps them calm down after negative emotions? How do they help calm down others? Where are their biggest source(s) of comfort in their life?

Lol no but I’ve said this before, but high moments of stress tend to be hell on his back up dancers and personal trainers. He wants to perfect things, feel some control over whatever he can get his puppet strings into. He’s self aware enough to know that tinkering obsessively with a beat or his upcoming album or whatever isn’t going to get him anywhere; at least a physical outlet helps him get to sleep at the end of the night.

He’s also prone to a slice of slime pie, a preroll, or whatever sort of light drugs he can get his hands on in the moment. Because it’s pretty common for clowns to dabble in these things, it’s a way for Marvus to kind of hide that he’s feeling some type of way. Yeah he wants to get fucked up and party! Bad mood, what are you talking about? All clowns party, dogg. Lol. He does tend to push his bad moods behind the curtains and let them fester.

As for calming others... I mean, he can convince anyone of anything. He’ll talk you through it, and though he’s a little bit out of touch with most people and their problems, he’s earnest in his own way. I think I’m evolving a previous headcanon I held here; Marvus has a 50/50 shot at actually being comforting vs just talking at you and not helping at all.

His biggest sources of comfort in life are his closest friends. He’s a chronic extrovert and loves to fuck around with his buddies. Trust is hard to earn with him; if you’re his friend, you pretty much stay there. He may not confide in you (he reserves his confidence for his quads, but even that’s rare), but he will seek you out for company on bad days.

Reveal: What are their emotional tells? Are they generally more expressive or more communicative with their emotions?

Check da canesword 👊😔 For real, though, moments of high emotion have him spinning and twirling and gesticulating with that thing. In general, he can be kind of fidgety. 

His face isn’t super expressive in any genuine way (unless he’s alone with someone he cares about; again, Marvus can be earnest, but that only comes with deep trust). He has strict control over what passes over his face, and it’s usually only what he wants you to see unless something takes him by complete surprise.

Odd: What makes them unique? Do they have any rituals specific to them and their life? Are they generally well liked by people they meet, or are they slower to connect?

He’s almost frighteningly charismatic. People see “Marvus” before they see “blood thirsty clown caste” 9 times out of 10 if his voice hits your ears before his image hits your eyes. He’s also just genuinely a pretty good guy for alternian standards. He’s well liked by those he chooses to connect with; even people who find him annoying can, at the very least, understand the charm. As for connecting, though, he does have his curtain that he hides behind, and it’s difficult to get that backstage pass.

I don’t see him having rituals, really. He likes to have little parties after an album release and just generally celebrate the good times, but that’s all I can think of.

Meal: Can they cook? What are their favorite foods? Do they assign importance to meals, or is it just something they need to do to stop their hunger?

YES I made this question with Marvus in mind specifically lol. AND! We are going to touch on my forbidden sandwich headcanons here. Slowly, they’re taking shape...... Anyway kshdasd 

Can he cook? On a stove......... no 😌❤️ He does burn that shit, keeps the heat either at a full 10 or off, no in between. But he can bake like nobody’s business. It’s all thanks to the real MVP of a cooking sesh: the timer. The really annoying, hard to ignore, timer, lol. 

His favorite foods tend to be spicy, sweet and salty. Marvus steers towards “east alternian” style foods, but more specifically he likes indian, vietnamese, and thai food. Still, he does love his general tso’s chicken on his cheat days. He has a bit of a sweet tooth and finds it hard to say no to dessert, his strict diet be damned.

Does he assign importance to meals? Only one: lunch. His life tends to be pretty hectic, and- despite his best efforts- he brings the hectic habits home with him. Most of his meals and snacks are quick and convenient foods that he can eat on the go. Marvus loves that pizza lunchables with the anchovies and a protein bar, call that a shark coochie board. He learned pretty quickly, though, that he loves to have his time in the middle of the night just for himself. 

And thus, Marvus lunch was born. He takes a little time in the middle of the night to slow down and savor a good meal. He still has to kind of hustle occasionally, so he’s never going to have complicated lunches, but a good ass sandwich? He’s here for it. His favorite (I am 100% projecting here, but allow me be self indulgent within my own self indulgent hc lmao) has onion jam, arugula, spicy sausage, pepper jack cheese, and pressed crusty bread. Maybe a lil side of soup. It’s just good for the soul. He loves to share his meal with company, because yes he is a social being, but also because sharing a meal has become a sort of love language for him.
