Man i was just thinking again about that idea i had for a cliche gijinka app card game where the gijinkas are all Interesting Bugs instead of weird sexy anime george washington.

I've kinda got quite attatched to my idea for a leech gijinka as a super cuddly white mage who just happens to look emo and scary. And they'd be a great opportunity for nonbinary representation cos in real life leeches don't have binary sexes anyway. But i cant decide between whether i want them to look like a full plague doctor mask thing or a more cliche cutesy nurse but theyre like super tall and look like the monster girl from the ring so they get sad that people always run away before they can help them! So then i was thinking "hey, alternate skins!" Not like in the other games ive played where there's always one canon skin and all the others require hours of grinding and/or real money to buy. But just that there's like three or so randomized versions of the base character with all the same stats but a different costume. Just to spice up the pool of options a bit! Or maybe it could even be more than just the costume and you can get entirely different reinterpretations of that job class? Like the medusa jellyfish could be either a young kid or a grandpa!

Oh and i'm not really sure how to name this or anything? Cos its not really a clear category of animals, its not all insects or all worms or whatever. More like just..all the animals that are unfairly hated but have Cool Biology Facts that i can babble at u to maybe make u like them more. So i dunno.. Pests? Creepy crawlies? Some entirely made up fantasy term for them?

Also i think the setting will definately be jrpg fantasy! Just a world where all these critters are actually funky people on a comedically bad D&D quest. I wonder who the villains could be tho? Maybe theyre gijinkas of more commonly loved cute animals? Or like.. Not gijinkas but monsterfied versions? Hilariously over the top evil fluffums! hamsters are this setting's dragons! And i dunno maybe the ultimate dark lord is a dog with a cat for a royal vizier or something, cos theyre the kings of popularity.

This could also make it actually make sense why the Clione character could be a beserker like in real life! Cos theyre the most un-hated rare sea slug for looking cute, but their actual personality is big scary predator. But in this universe being seen as cute by humans = evil, so the Clione's fighty doom personality would make perfect sense! Im not sure if i should make them like a tormented Shadow esque antihero or a paladin-looking knight who has a dark streak or maybe even a viking? Cos in videogames theyre like the epitome of 'loves fighting but is still a nice hugs guy'. And it'd be neat to have a chubby buff clione instead of the more cliche bishie gijinka. But then i mean theyre literally nicknamed 'sea angels' or 'sea fairies' depending on country so yeah? Oh or maybe that could mean i make them an elf or an angel but theyre still mega buff! Viking guy with lil chibi wings and halo!

Also randomly i think that Slug will be the other nonbinary character along with Leech. Cos well there's a lot of bugs who dont fit the human gender binary but i'd probably be a bit too obnoxious if i had like 90% enbies and noone else. I always think about like 'if this is my first game project i need to go at a small and reasonable pace with all the Big LGBT Feels', yknow? But then every idea i do is always my first game project cos ive never completed any of them yet XD

Anyway i think Slug would be a more fashionable bishie kind of androgenous character, while Leech is a relateable cuddly socially awkward one who wears a mask. But definately also looks stylish in their own way, and i'm sure Slug is always complimenting them and trying to bolster their spirits! Aside from being super fashionable i also think maybe Slug would be a wandering bard? Cos somehow slow animal -> lazy human -> free spirited instead to be less cliche -> bard. Also the whole 'bard rolls to seduce every boss' meme, lol! So Slug is a very nyeheheh tricksy flirty adventuring song person who aint take nobody's shit. Instead of being sleepy they sleep on the concept of low self confidence! Full and powerful pride at all times!!! Goal in life is to be beautiful AF and handsome AF and make everyone swoon at your feet and also recite an epic poetry so cool that your enemies straight up die from the sick burn. Tho i mean i don't think anyone could actually ACHIEVE that, lol! It might be obnoxious if i actually have a character who's basically 'enby people are literally perfect in all ways'. So i just think Slug is a big ol dork who's like the Gaston archetype of the comically overconfident flirt, but like a good and heroic version who actually respects when people say no to their advances. And is also a great BFF to Leech and tries to help them get out of their shell, because well of course Slug is out of theirs XD

Also actually i dunno whether they should all just be named after the animal or have thier own names but the animal is mentioned on their profile as a job class name or something? Cos it might get awkward once we get to more specific obscure bugs with longer names or ones who only really have a scientific genus name. I'd feel like i'd have to make them all wizards cos their names sound like spells! Oh MAYBE THEYRE SPELLS!! Like each character could chant their own scientific name when they use their ultimate attack??

Oh and maybe Slug and Leech could be just based on the species in general but have their alternate costumes themed after more specific rare subspecies? Like Slug could have nudibranch themed costumes cos the vibrant colours would fit such an elegant fashioniste~ And leech could just be an opportunity to talk about how there's subspecies of leech that dont drink blood, though this character is based on the ones that do because otherwise they wouldnt really have a unique job class, lol. Maybe their rarest alt costume is a fashionable orange ensemble that symbolizes both Slug taking them out for a night on the town in their finest to feel more comfortabke in their self confidence, and also just the fact there's an orange tropical leech. Its kinda funny cos there isnt such a huge range of different colours for leeches, its mostly just different barely visible patterns and a spectrum from greenish brown to brownish black, lol. And then suddenly a bunch of wildly different red and orange ones! And nothing in between! Really does seem like a surprise makeover from your bestie, yknow?

Oh and then when i was thinking about other potential relationships between different magic bug people, i thought of Daddy Longlegs! Cos thats a name confusingly given to multiple bugs of wildly different species who're all mistaken for spiders when they really arent. And this mythical nonexistant daddy longlegs spider also has the myth of having 'the strongest poison but its fangs are too short to bite you' which is COMPLETE nonsense based on nothibg cos how would it even survive in the wild if it cant hunt? But its a real cool myth so it could be an awesome excuse to make them have a move that gambles on either an instant kill or a self debuff. ALSO THEY ARE MARRIED

I was thinking they could be a duo of fabulous zorro-looking assassin dudes who were sent to assassinate each other but instead fell in love and quit the business for good. Like 'you made me want to live again, and the only reason i threw my life away on this job was cos i wanted to die'. And to atone for all the bad mercenary stuff theyd done in the past, now theyre robin hood esque mercenaries who take jobs with world-saving hero groups like our protagonists. And they work for free as long as the cause is just! And they wish they could settle down someday and dream about having children of their own, but they feel like they dont deserve it after all that theyve done. They'd be a rare goofy bugmans that actually have a real emotional backstory! So anyway they're fancy fencing guys who're both the same class but maybe slightly different variants with different stat builds or abilities? More specialized and all. Like maybe one is speedy but weaker and one is slower but stronger? Or one relies more on luck based attacks and one is a consistant damage dealer but has a lower max damage cap? Or even one is status effects and one is attack and really even though they have the same job name theyre wildly different interpretations of it. Fitting for the entomology mistake husbands! I want them to be balanced so that they have special bonuses together but are still viable to use separately if your party setup only requires one of them. Also randomly i think their names would be Albedo and Rubedo? I was originally gonna make Rubedo the name of the leech cos i mean alchemy words and plague masks and all. But then it doesnt really SOUND like an alchemy word, it sounds like a fancy handsome dancer name. And then i started thinking about the cute once-sad-now-happy young assassin dads fighting together so well that it looks like one big dance between them, rather than a battle. And i got REAL EMOTIONAL over goddamn bug gijinkas! Man my heart is made of paper and mush!! Oh and maybe they have combo attacks together but also with all of the party members that are younger? Like special dad instinct combo! A built in ability that they automatically shield the kids from enemy attacks. YOU HIRED A MERCENARY BUT YOU RECEIVED A NICE MARRIED COUPLE WHO PROMPTLY ADOPT YOU. Oh and maybe their alternate costumes could just be each other's costumes? Like they'd already be wearing matching red and white versions of the same thing, but then albino dad wears ginger dad's version and vice versa. Or maybe their alt costumes are different complimentary colour pairs like black and gold or blue and pink? And maybe their ultra rare special costume is Big Cute Dorky Argyle Dad Sweaters! It must be capitalized cos it is IMPORTANT!

Oh and then i was also thinking about the idea i had before of bugs with a queen hive structure being like the workers are the common unit and the breeders and queens and such are rarer variants? But the workers are the only ones actually good in a fight, the others are just for collectables sake. Rare but useless, just like how the real queen bee is so big that she cant leave the hive, and never figjts a day in her life unless the kingdom has already fallen. So maybe queen bee is still unlockable as a rare character but she's just a support that makes worker bee stronger? Like you get a lil event of worker's boss coming to honor her with a knighthood for her good service, allowing her to upgrade her job class. Tho i think she still fights with construction work equipment, now its just like a golden jewelled shovel XD

But first, some HCs!

Personally I like to think he's he's a long boi, around 6'10", for a couple other reasons I haven't posted here, yet... but IRL, a lot of the time taller people have more back difficulties, so that combined with the fact that the dude is always trying to maintain good posture means that it would take a bit of a toll on some of his muscle groups. And G' doesn't exactly lead a stress-free life, i guarantee the guy's having to deal with some serious shit behind the scenes, whatever it may be. That stress would lead to a lot of built up tension, and consequently tightening of the muscles. If you look at him walking in HLA from the side, you can sort of see how he's got a little bit of a hunch. I don't think it's completely because of his supposed physical age, since I doubt he's an actual middle-aged man.

Whatever situation he's in, he's always conscious of his posture. He's been taught human body language, and how they way you hold yourself can change how others unconsciously perceive you. He uses it to his advantage, to make sure the power balance between him and people he interacts with stays tipped in his favour. I think it would be so ingrained in him, that even if he wasn't around someone he had to keep up appearances with, he'd still be straight-backed. You'd probably have to point it out to him, and tell the guy to fuckin r e l a x for once in his life lol.

If G-Man had a relationship with someone he came to trust enough to let them lay their hands on him, he'd discover that it can actually be quite enjoyable. You've noticed how stiff he looks at times, and worked up the courage to offer him a massage. You explain what it is and what you'll be doing. At first he's quite opposed to the idea...

"How does applying, presssure, to the muscles, make one... 're-lax?'"

"It just does, trust me. People paid money to get massages. I used to have them all the time. I know you'd enjoy it."

He eventually changes his mind when curiosity gets the better of him. After some lengthy convincing, you somehow get this man face down on a bed, without his jacket or tie. But... you soon encounter a slight problem. That damn belt of his is going to be in the way. You kneel beside him awkwardly for a minute, wondering what to do. He notices your silence and turns his head, a questioning eye finding yours.

"Uh... your, um. Your belt. I'm gonna have to get that off, too."

"My... belt..."

You start to sweat when he doesn't say anything else, and for the longest fucking time nothing happens. With a little sigh he turns onto his back. Wanting to get this weird moment over with, you quickly grab for his buckle without thinking. His hand shoots out and catches your wrist before you get the chance, a tiny flicker of alarm crossing his features, eyes glowing white hot. Shaken, your heart's in your throat, but before you can say sorry, he cuts in.

"I apologize. I... was not expecting you to..."

He trails off, eyes flicking down to your wrist. His grip is strong, nearly painful. He lets go, looking guilty. Lowering back down, he folds his hands over his stomach, deliberately avoiding your eyes by staring up at the ceiling.

His words come out a little hesitant, "you may... remove it, if you wish..."

Seeing it's safe to go ahead, you carefully start to unbuckle his belt. To ease the tension a bit, you make a little quip, "count yourself lucky it's just the belt and I'm not telling you to ditch the shirt, too..."

He shoots you an uneasy look, rolling back onto his stomach and folding his arms under his head once you've slipped the belt from the loops. He hates being in such a vulnerable position, and just about fucking teleports away when you straddle the back of his thighs, but he really wants to know how it's going to feel, maybe even thinks that it won't do much because he IS relaxed, damnit. You start low, at the base of the spine and work your way up. He's super tense at first, and it makes it difficult to work your hands into his muscles.

"And, this is supposed... to relax me?"

"Yeah, and it would be if you'd stop... tensing up. What the hell are you doing down there?"

The struggle doesn't last for long. As you get higher, he just turns to absolute putty, a literal boneless pile of goo underneath you. He's particularly knotted in the neck and shoulders and at the base of the ribs from keeping up that posture all the time. He even can't help the few muffled groans that escape here and there. He would have swallowed them down, but it honestly feels way too good for him to give a shit. His head is turned to the side, resting on his arms, so you can only just see a sliver of an iris glowing lazily every time you get to a sweet spot.

"So... I see you're enjoying yourself, huh? Guess who was right Mr. I-don't-need-no-massage."

He widens a shining eye, and the pupil is unnaturally blown out, something you've never seen before. It kinda reminds you of a cat about to pounce. He only deigns to reply to your teasing with a slightly husky grunt.

"Yeah, I thought so..."

It’s just that the outcome is not really what he is prepared for and now he has to cooperate with the Lieutenant in order to keep his secrets hidden.

Connor waits in the bar. There is nothing new in waiting in places like this and he is patient enough not to start fidgeting with his coin while glancing at the entrance door every few minutes. He is used to this. He is quite used to every bit of nerve-wracking detail of this monotonous side-effect of his plan.

To the muzzy hours of listening to the ticking of the old worn-out clock on the top of the shelf between the bottles that Jimmy loves so much. If Connor would form an opinion about it, he would say that it is truly hideous. A smartly dressed young man hitting on a burn out cop is fishy on its own, but stepping right next to him without a second though is downright alarming. He doesn't actually understand these unspoken social rules but he doesn't question it either because he only gets anwers that are even more complicated than the question itself. So he waits a few minutes to go by then gets up from his booth and walks next to the man.

The man doesn't even glance at him, just drowns his face in a glass of whiskey and Connor is too determined to take it a sign to fuck off.

"Your finest whiskey on the rock", he says to the bartender. "Same to my company. It's on me."

The man doesn't look at him, he continues to ignore him as he stares right at Jimmy with his half-empty glass in his hand and then slowly forming the words he finally speaks.

"I didn't know it is a twink-friendly area nowadays", he mutters.

Jimmy just shoots an entertained expression as he places the two new glasses in front of them. Connor lifts it to his mouth as he starts analyzing the Lieutenant. He already found out from public document the most he needed to know. Hank Anderson, a 52 yeal old police lieutenant, divorced and drunk his ass off in the past 2 years in this very bar. His plan depends on his self-confidence, the portayal of a cocky and ambitious young kid who has to many daddy issues to control himself. He needs to be that even though he really has no previous experience being flirtatious and all. He knew he had to be prepared so he memorized at least a thousand different pick up lines and even more method of non-verbal representation of interest.

Still, he goes with sarcasm. Somehow that's more natural.

The lieutenant finally glares at him and probably tries to dissect every little detail of his appearance. Connor wears a white shirt with its sleeves rolled to his elbow and dark jeans. He looks neat, but comfortable. He also doesn't look like someone who belongs to a bar like this and the Hank is likely to be aware of it. But he doesn't question it. He probably has already seen stranger things.

Rejection seemed to be almost inevitable when he planned all this little play so Connor is not suprised by the tone of the sentence. He just puts his most innocent smile on his face and try not to sound desperate.

"All I intent to find is a good company to spend my time with", he says.

"You have a pretty fucked up standard if you think I am good company", the lieutenant grumbles  as he downs the remaining whiskey. "Choosing a grumpy old man who is stiff enough to bite your dick off is not an idea normal people have.

Connor just shrugs his shoulders and turns a little bit towards the lieutenant. His knee bumps to the other man's. He gets a curious look in return.

"I am not fond of normal things", he says.

And then he finally gets the attention he has been fighting for because the lieutenant orders another turn and neglects grabbing his coat and jumping to the entrance door at the earliest opportunity. Somehow Connor feels a little warm inside his chest and he tries not to concentrate on the fact that this is the first time he may actually be getting some honest interest from another person for his witty personality and not only for his looks. This is new and truly thrilling.

"So", the lieutenant starts."What does a fragile boy like you do in a filthy place like this?

"I was waiting for someone. Not anymore, it seems."

Hank rolls his eyes.

"Jesus, that was cheesy ", he barks, and Connor find the sound oddly endearing. "Business or enjoyment?

Connor decides to make a bold move and puts his hand on the other man's knee.

This is really not what he planned but he starts to enjoy the situation even though it may not lead to the way he needs it. Still the temptation is unusual and as he leans closer he can smell the cheap cologne of the lieutenant and see the wrinkles on his massive hands. He probably could break his think neck in one gritty movement and the clear plausibility of this fact starts to send electric jolts trough Connor's spine.

"Can't it be both?" he breathes and watches as the other man tries to make out the words.

Naturally, Connor stand up to feel like he can be at least little bit intimidating as the other man watches him move. His mouth falls into a tiny smile as he takes the man's whiskey and downs it in one swift move. The Lieutenant stays silent trough it. It is oddly reassuring.

"Interesting", he says as he puts the glass down. "I suppose you are also off duty considering the amount of alcohol you have already consumed. Otherwise I suppose it would be quiet irresponsible of you. Your superior would surely not favor it."

This is a clear-as-day teasing and Connor couldn't be more proud of himself for it. As for the lieutenant - well, he is less pleased. He stands up more quickly than he should be able to and grabs Connor's collar as he pulls him next to the nearest wall. He slams him to it and Connor tries to grab something not to lose balance but his options are limited so he just grasps the lieutenant's shirt in his hands, knuckles going white by the effort. He should be suprised, he should be panicking even. He just forgets it completely how to be that as his half-hard dick starts to demand more and more attention.

Not a lot of people stare at them, they must be be used to it already. Not even Jimmy bats an eye. Is it an ordinary behaviour of the man?

"Alright, Smartass", the lieutenant grumbles to his face and Connor's limbs start to give up. "Are you playing to get arrested or you just have a loose mouth?"

Connor would like to say something smart. Something witty and cheerful, something that will ease the hardened atmosphere around them but he would also like to get on his knees right now and suck the life out of the man in front of him. It is totally irrational and he doesn't actually understand where all this is coming from but the heat is there and it stays in his abdonmen as the lieutenant presses closer.

"So?"he asks and Connor, for the first time in his life decides to go with his instincts instead of calculating every single outcome of his feasible moves.

"Pull out your gun and find it out", he says without a beat. "Officer."

He doesn't actually know how he gets pressed to a bathroom stall - it happens very fast, clothes and limbs all around his vision -, but the next thing he realizes is that he is half bending, elbows on the stall's door as Hank buries his cock balls deep inside of him. "I think it's yours, Detective", he says as he offers the little plate, voice a little bit harsh.

Hank takes it and really tries to keep his remaining dignity as he pulls the trousers up to his thights.

"Sure thing", he murmurs and Connor is oddly proud of himself as fixes his own jeans.

"I hope my behaviour won't entail any further investigation", he jokes and Hank's shoulders slump a little as the tension of the situation leaves his body.

Connor would like to say something, but he got what he wanted and it's really not the best idea to further complicate this situation.

He likes to think he will be able to do that.

"Wait!' Hank grabs after him, keeping him in place as he moves closer. "Tell me your name."

Connor swallows not really knowing if it's a safe thing to do, but then again, he is really illogical today so he just leans into Hank's space, giving him a tiny kiss on the cheek.

"Connor", he breathes.

Hank nods then fixes his shirt again and leaves.

A sudden loss perches on Connor's shoulders as he follows the man outside and passes him when he goes outside of the bar. The weather is particularly cold and it soothes his aching joints. He starts to head home. Tomorrow, he will have a lot of work to do.

He hopes til then he can calm his racing heart.

Fall Out Boy: Mania

Hello everyone! Today i am going to scratch another promo review and decided to do the latest album from Fall Out Boy. I’ve been learning towards wanting to scratch off their other album Save Rock n’ Roll since it is due for an anniversary review; but a promo review theme won out. This is a relatively short album from them at just over a half hour long and features them continuing to develop their current comeback pop sound that they shifted to with their Save Rock n Roll release. I found it to be a pretty interesting work to round out this sound before venturing into a different direction potentially. Let’s begin and see where it takes us.

Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea: The album starts off with a quick electronic bass drum bash and takes little time in getting the album up to a strong dance energy. The rhythm component is pretty engaging and will add to the dance structure of it. Patrick’s vocals are pretty smooth even though they are very heavy on the electronic autotune which at times is a positive and harsh negative in his singing. The lyrics are very entertaining to follow along to while the instrumentals focus on a strict supporting role to him. The inclusion of swearing changes things up a little bit and shows them shifting emphasis on being a complete mainstream product. The electronica usage makes for effective interludes and will help to provide a strong sense of length to this song that would fit well for a live performance as well as a night time club scene. 8.5/10

The Last of the Real Ones (single): This first single begins with a soothing key melody that continues to leave the listener in a solid state of dance. The vocals arrive with a nice sense of catchiness; though of course i will knock the heavy auto tune throughout the album when focused on. The chorus is very energetic yet reserved and pours a nice balance of refined power in Patrick’s delivery. The lyrics are a lot more basic than the last song so don’t expect this one to have as much substance in that area than the last song. It is still pretty easy to follow along to and enjoy; so i would see little issue in continuing on in the album. The other notion from past listens is that the flow of this album would be suitable for a full album performance if they chose. 8/10

This is definitely one of the stronger songs on the album that features more freshness for the band’s sound and with the further inclusion of swears shows their less dominant focus on mainstream politeness. 8.5/10

Church: This song starts off with low bell rings from an organ and Patrick arrives with a soft and low gospel delivery before signaling for the bass and drums to establish a modest rhythm. Backing female gospel vocals work nicely to support Patrick while he delivers some rather interesting lyrics to follow along to. His voice is very smooth in pacing and general tone which avoids overdoing his high notes. Heaven’s Gate: This second half of the album continues with the gospel tone of the last song but takes it into a very deep piano ballad tone. Patrick uses this song to really showcase his vocal abilities since he is very much alone on this one with minimal instrumental support. The lyrics are decent and slow moving which will provide a soothing effect on the listener; though over-focusing on them would cause them to feel drawn and lose their interest rather quickly. Other than that i think it would of been better off place towards the end of the album in order to not slow things down too much for the listener but they still have a few more energetic songs to hopefully keep some life in the album. 7/10

Champion (single): This next single is going to be more typical style Fall Out Boy that will be comparable to their last two albums in case the more experimental stuff on here was too far out there for older fans. It begins with a simple electronic opening before Patrick arrives with a small sense of swagger in his voice. The drum beat provides a simple but effective rhythm while the guitars infuse some effects into the background to prop Patrick up a bit further. The chorus goes by very well with a sense of empowerment that will reflect well on a live show and mainstream radio. Patrick does toy around with a rapping like vocal style that works at decently for the flow of the song without appearing to showcase that effort. I will note that like i said earlier; it is a standard Fall Out Boy hit and because of that; is enjoyable but predictable and very simple to come across on the album. 7.5/10

Sunshine Riptide: Patrick brings back a heavy dose of auto tune to create a more rap centric style for his voice. The bass and drums create a rather interesting rasta style that will either be a hit or miss for the listener. They do feature a guest rapper by the name of Burna Boy which performs actually rather well in the song and pretty much could of easily made this song’s style his very own if he was more prominent throughout it. I can definitely say that for only being a half hour long this getting to be a very lengthy album listen from them; though it definitely is intended for a late night atmosphere in order to really appreciate. 7/10

The ambient nature of it too is a nice experiment for the band to test out since it could very easily lose momentum like other songs did on the album but it manages to push through with relative ease. I don’t think that i would of made it four and a half minutes long since it runs the risk of getting the point across to the listener too early on. Other than that; it is a suitable way to close out the album. 8/10

Now i definitely do enjoy this album but note that it signals the band approaching the limits of their current sound. They do experiment heavily on here which makes it an interesting album to come across but even then it is predictable in that regard and losing life as the album progresses. It is very easy going which i’m sure is intended and will make for a very good choice to unwind to at night. Due to its soft approach it makes you wonder what anybody other than Patrick does on the album. Obviously you can hear the instruments blended in but there is so much electronica used that they are starting to fall into Maroon 5′s problem where it is hard to distinguish which is an actual band member performance and a computer. Hopefully their next album either changes directions a bit or returns to the blended pop rock energy of their last two albums; which are very well done by the way. I’ve gotta head out now but that’s one more album off of my promo list for you guys. My next one will probably return to an older anniversary review since i gotta start scratching off at least one of them this month before we get closer to the holidays.

Dehydration Sensation - Hermann doesn’t handle heat well. Hurt/Comfort. Hermann doesn’t take care of himself in the middle of a heat wave and Newt once again has to pick up the pieces. Including obstinate, delirious, and dissaproving Hermann alongside exasperated Newton! One-shot.

Homeostasis - The K-science laboratory stands on its own plane of existence; life within its concrete walls runs in parallel to life in the bigger world of the Hong Kong Shatterdome. Yet even here the laws of physics apply. Whenever Hermann’s body isn’t failing him, Newton’s mind is on the verge of breaking. Hurt/Comfort. The scientists have a rough day in the lab. I really enjoyed the contrast of the mental and physical given that each Hermann and Newt suffer from their own handicaps. Seeing the ailments as both a foil and a complement to each other was a very compelling look into their relationship. One-shot.

Incessant - Hermann’s physical limitations frustrate him to tears. Angst. Newton tries to help Hermann after a fall, Hermann is frustrated that his body won’t cooperate with anything. Poor Newt has to make this situation at least bearable for both of them. The selling points for this story is mostly domestic science boyfriends and an accurate depiction of the frustrations that come with being disabled/handicapped. One-shot.

Keep Your Mouth Shut, Keep Your Guard Up -  Hercules Hansen does not understand why Hermann won’t just tell him why he got in a fight with the new J-Tech. It’s obvious who came out worse for wear. Hurt/Comfort/Romance. Hermann just wants to protect Newton, they just keep getting into trouble. So wonderfully in character. I love these two. One-shot.

Laundry Day - “I must have almost popped the question a hundred times, but the timing never seemed…right, you know?” “And you decided nearly killing me in the middle of laundromat was the Platonic ideal of romance, did you?” Aka the one where Hermann launders Newt’s jacket and finds rather more than he bargained for. Hermann/Newt. Romance/Humor. This story is just so cute. I love how the everyday interaction between Newt and Hermann turns into such a touching/adorable moment. One-shot.

Am I reccing this entirely because Hermann is asexual? Yes, yes I am. Also features cute relationships, Newton coming up with a bunch of “queer” orientated pet names for Hermann, and some good points about sexuality. One-shot.

Roughed Up - The two scientists go out for drinks, and things go from bad to worse. Hurt/Comfort. Hermann tries to protect Newton, Newton has to patch him up. The writing isn’t the best and the plot is unoriginal, but it’s still a fun read. One-shot.

Taken Care Of - Newt helps out Hermann when he’s having a bad day. Hurt/Comfort. A short and fluffy slice of life story that follows the companionship of Newt and Hermann through a rough day. One-shot.

The Ghost and Dr. Priestly - Newt is pulling an all-nighter in the university library studying for a chemistry test, when he begins to hear strange sounds. Good news: it’s not a ghost. Bad news: he only finds out after giving his lab partner, Hermann, a mild concussion. Drama/Romance/Hurt/Comfort. Newt is an unbelievable idiot and poor Hermann suffers the consequences. Or, Hermann is concussed and is probably not thinking properly, but he still kisses Newt even after the daft man nearly brained him with a book. One-shot.

Fairy Tail Review — Far From The #1 Guild

A mediocre JRPG, Fairy Tail does only the bare minimum with what it offers. It’s a game for dedicated fans, but fans deserve a better game.

Fairy Tail is a long-running manga and anime series. It was one of the bigger shonen series at the height of its popularity, running concurrently to the “Big Three” (Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece). It has since concluded a few years ago, but it made enough of a splash for Gust to develop an RPG based on it, so here we are.

I’ll preface this review by saying that my knowledge of the source material is very limited. I’ve only seen a few episodes of the Fairy Tail anime and have read none of the manga. This kind of game project is usually catered more to fans, so I am not the target demographic; this I freely admit. Much of the specifics of story arcs and character dynamics are lost on me here, relying entirely on the game and a little extra research to fill me in past the first half-dozen anime episodes.

Still, I am a fan of Gust’s Atelier series, having played through most of the English releases in the franchise. Between that and the trailers looking promising, I raised my hand for this review. Given that it’s possible to get enjoyment out of the Sword Art Online games without prior knowledge, for example, I’d been hoping for a similar feeling here.

Alas, that was not the sentiment I got out of the Fairy Tail game. This is a game for fans of the series, which is great! Unfortunately, it really didn’t do much to convince me to want to become a fan, either. What few glimpses of interesting concepts, characters, and stories the game has are largely undone by painfully mediocre gameplay and presentation. There’s nothing here that hasn’t been done by other JRPGs before, and usually much better.

Fairy Tail opens at the end of the Tenrou Island arc, starting immediately with a tutorial boss fight against Hades. The events here play out quickly, offering both rapid-fire introductions to characters and gameplay mechanics. This arc ends with the titular Fairy Tail guild sealing themselves and Tenrou Island in a protective bubble, narrowly avoiding death from the dragon Acnologia.

When the bubble goes down, the reason for this rushed opening becomes apparent: while not much time passed inside the shield, seven years passed for the rest of the world. Fairy Tail had been the top-rated wizard guild prior to this moment, but now they’ve largely been forgotten and left destitute. Now, both the characters and the player have an excuse to build everything back up from the very bottom. Clever!

  The rushed tutorial now takes its time to establish a few things and get you into the rhythm of the game. Fairy Tail also includes an encyclopedia to refer to, with short page-long descriptions of the story thus far. It’ll be filled with background on characters, terminology, and systems to check back on as the game unfolds. A welcome inclusion, though it naturally cannot fill in all the details and nuance of the full manga/anime series thus far.

As a wizard guild, Fairy Tail is tasked with numerous requests by the populace. These become the quests that you’ll spend the bulk of your time doing. Some are just repeatable and generic “go to X region and kill/find Y” quests; others are more designed, require specific members to be present, and feature dialogue and cutscenes involving them.

Gameplay will fall into the rhythm of taking a task from the guild’s request board, seeing a brief scene talking about it, then going off to find an item or have a battle. See a brief wrap-up scene, return, cash in, and repeat. Doing so will increase your money and renown, which serves both as a currency to improve both your characters and guild facilities. Renown will also see your guild rank increase over time, with higher ranks granting access to new areas and more requests.

  Concurrently to this runs the main story. Having to restart from the bottom, the Fairy Tail guild decides that the best way to reclaim their notoriety is to win the upcoming Grand Magic Games. As such, the story quests will see you training and preparing for this, before taking part (and beyond). Almost all of these main story scenarios involve battles, so this leads me to the combat system.

Fairy Tail is a turn-based JRPG. You’ll have a decently sized ensemble of characters that you can bring into your team, each with unique abilities. The initial five from the tutorial consist of Natsu, Lucy, Gray, Erza and Wendy; after the tutorial, you’ll only be able to field up to three, expanding back up to five as it progresses. More characters like Juvia and Gajeel will join as story beats continue.

Since every character is a wizard, there are a few light twists on an otherwise standard JRPG formula. Both your health point and mana point bars become crucial, as running out of either sees your character knocked out. Basic Attacks are incredibly weak and still cost a single MP to use, so you’re encouraged to predominantly use your magic.

The most interesting aspect of the battle system is the enemy grid. Each enemy will be placed on a 3×3 grid. Your characters aren’t on the field, but their abilities each have specific ranges and areas that they can affect. Oft-times, your list of magic won’t do that much more damage than your basic one tile ability, but instead, have added effects and can hit additional tiles. A few abilities can reposition enemies on the grid to make subsequent AoE strikes hit harder, and enemies can also occasionally move themselves around. It ultimately becomes a case of judging whether to use MP to clear the field or just conserve it and focus fire. It’s not Radiant Historia levels of battlefield manipulation, but it’s something!

You’ll also have a party gauge that allows you to trigger a Magic Chain when full. This lets you have your party members attack one after the other for less MP before ending on a massive finisher. These chains can get pretty ridiculous, and I knocked out whole boss phases in a single one on many occasions. Most of your upgrades serve to increase the power of these chains, and increasing character bonds by using them in requests together further increases their duration.

There are other considerations to the battles, such as characters being able to trigger Awakening after taking enough damage. This grants brief stat bonuses and potentially new forms and moves. You can also expend Awakening to avoid an incoming attack, or follow up an ally’s attack with another. There are definitely many options in the battles, and they’re probably the most well-developed part of Fairy Tail.

Here’s the problem, then: Fairy Tail is way too easy. Playing on normal difficulty, I was very quickly reaching points where I was breezing through even bosses without challenge. You have the tools and power to dispatch enemies so effortlessly that Fairy Tail just becomes trivial to play. This problem only gets worse if you decide to actually engage with more of the side content, as doing the extra requests or exploring zones fully will see you overleveled in no time.

Since this is where the bulk of unique character interactions and dialogue happens, fans will want to engage with it, thus turning the game into a cakewalk. Worse still, the main story will frequently set points where you have to reach a certain level or guild rank to advance. The option to power through it is removed, thus throwing the gameplay balance out the window. Any attempt to dig into the battle system or really utilise party strengths just becomes pointless when you can breeze through everything.

The ease of battles also has run off effects into other systems. In addition to your guild requests, you can upgrade Fairy Tail’s guild facilities through finding materials in the world. These give all sorts of bonuses, but it all amounts to making you stronger, so it’s easier once again. Mixing and matching your party members to increase their bonds for added dialogue? Also increases their power. Side quests and exploration will award equippable Lacrima gems, and you can even craft powerful character-specific ones. These are all the most generic stat increases you can imagine, and it makes the game easier still. Everything loops back into making my time with the game an exercise in patience as I steamroll all obstacles, rather than enjoying the systems.

Still, I’ve played through worse gameplay systems for the sake of a good story. So once again, I was disappointed to not really find that here. That isn’t even the fault of it being a Fairy Tail adaptation, either; there was honestly quite a lot to like, but the sheer breakneck pace of the game means everything happened super fast and then was gone a moment later.

Everything is rushed through, and usually not for any reason beyond budget. There will be multiple scenes in which interesting events are described in a couple of text boxes and a still image, only to thrust you back into mundane requests. Numerous characters and even major antagonists will be talking, but only have a portrait rather than a character model. So effectively, you’re left watching your party have dialogues with people off-screen.

Those limitations didn’t stop them from having a fully animated cutscene of the female Fairy Tail members at a swim party, though. Gust has its priorities, it would seem!

In fairness, those priorities carried over to the stylised character models and attack animations; those are very on-brand for the original designs. The rest of the presentation isn’t really better though, with most environments being incredibly bland. Fairy Tail‘s world consists of stock biomes, generic enemy creatures, and only a few series-specific inclusions. All the omissions and lack of polish seriously added up. No effort was put into the game’s performance, either. Despite the fairly bland visuals, the frame rate is absurdly low and dips into comical territories during flashier attacks and bigger zones.

I did want to like Fairy Tail, and there were points where character and charm shone through. The end result is a lot of fine ideas executed in cheap, mediocre ways that hamper their enjoyment. It’s a perfectly serviceable but completely uninspired JRPG. There’s nothing here that hasn’t been done so much better. I can’t help but feel that Gust made all the basics of an Atelier game, only to entirely remove the intricate crafting systems and presentation that typically carry the series. Slap a Fairy Tail skin on it, and here we are.

Fairy Tail was a game made for existing fans of the series, through and through. It offers very little to actually entice me to become a fan or learn more about the source material. I can absolutely respect that the game isn’t for me; even so, I couldn’t help but feel that dedicated fans of the series deserve a much better attempt than this. It checks all the boxes and reminds players of the highlights and character moments of the greater series, but only puts in the barest effort doing so.

That might be enough for you, but I think fans should have better. As for those who aren’t fans, it’s probably better to skip Fairy Tail. Even hardcore JRPG fans will find it not worth playing instead of something much better. This is just too mediocre to recommend for all but the most dedicated fan. Still, I hope you find what you’re looking for here if you do take the plunge.
