Coheed and Cambria primer for L.S. Dunes fans
Travis Stever and Claudio Sanchez are the two core members of Coheed and Cambria and have been since the bands inception in 1999. Coheed primarily makes concept albums based on Claudio's sci-fi comic series The Amory Wars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The basic plot is that Coheed and Cambria Kilgannon are fighting against aspiring dictator Wilhelm Ryan, who started The Amory Wars with the goal to rule over the solar system Heaven’s Fence. Their son Claudio (we love a self insert) is a seemingly normal kid dragged into the fight, who may turn out to be the prophesied saviour.
"But what do they sound like?" Coheed mixes elements from a lot of genres and are most often described as prog rock. I would personally be more inclined to classify them as power metal or like, prog emo (emo used as a sort of catch all term for various pop influenced rock, metal, punk and hardcore music styles of the 00s). If you like Dunes there's definitely something in their discography you'd enjoy, especially given how similar Claudio and Anthony's vocals are.
You don't need to follow the storyline to enjoy their music though, here's a few of their more radio friendly songs I would recommend a new listener to start with:
Favor House Atlantic - every 00s band has at least one pop punk song
Ten Speed - slightly more prog influence, still pretty pop punk
Welcome Home - it's their most popular song for a reason
Shoulders - newer song, hard rock/metal vibes
Bonus: Jesse's Girl 2 ft Rick Springfield - Claudio wanted to write a sequel to Rick Springfield's 1981 classic Jesse's Girl, so he did.
If we define 'rock bands from the New York Metro area 1999-2002' as a scene, Coheed and Cambria were right there in the trenches with bands like Midtown, Taking Back Sunday, Thursday and My Chemical Romance. They were tour with these guys and most of the other "bandom" bands (The Used, Fall Out Boy, AFI etc.) and were hanging out in the background somewhere for a lot of iconic moments, like Warped 2004 (featured in LOTMS).
For example, you have probably seen a few photos of Adam and Gerard from backstage at the 2005 Concert for Tsunami Relief:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The handsome guy on the left is Claudio Sanchez ☝️
Or the 2003 Thursday/Thrice/Coheed tour which gave us some of the worlds most important images courtesy of Justin Borucki:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a roundabout way Coheed is actually responsible for giving MCR their first big break. In 2002 they were opening for Jimmy Eat World and had to cancel a show last minute, they were replaced by MCR who had only released Bullets a month prior.
Tumblr media
From Dan Ozzi's Sellout
So from what I can tell Travis has known Thursday and MCR since at least 2002 and Anthony since at least 2005 (Coheed/Thrice/Circa Survive tour). More recently Travis played with Thursday for their Signals V2 livestream (2021) and Coheed opened for MCROKC (2022).
I know I missed heaps of stuff but I hope this helps at least one Dunes fan understand Travis a little more! His connections to the band go just as deep as any of his bandmates but are a lot less straightforward.

We've got five different books on our radar this week! Which ones have caught your eye?
Kindling by Traci Chee HarperCollins
Once, the war was fought with kindlings—elite, magic-wielding warriors whose devastating power comes at the cost of their own young lives. Now, the war is over, and kindlings have been cast adrift—their magic outlawed, their skills outdated, their formidable balar weapons prized only as relics and souvenirs. Violence still plagues the countryside, and memories haunt those who remain. When a village comes under threat of siege, it offers an opportunity for seven kindlings to fight one last time. But war changed these warriors. And to reclaim who they once were, they will have to battle their pasts, their trauma, and their grim fates to come together again—or none of them will make it out alive.
Everything I Learned About Racism I Learned in School by Tiffany Jewell Versify
From preschool to higher education and everything in between, Everything I Learned About Racism I Learned in School focuses on the experiences Black and Brown students face as a direct result of the racism built into schools across the United States. The overarching nonfiction narrative follows author Tiffany Jewell from early elementary school through her time at college, unpacking the history of systemic racism in the American educational system along the way. Throughout the book, other writers of the global majority share a wide variety of personal narratives and stories based on their own school experiences. Contributors include New York Times bestseller Joanna Ho; award winners Minh Lê, Randy Ribay, and Torrey Maldonado; authors James Bird and Rebekah Borucki; author-educators Amelia A. Sherwood, Roberto Germán, Liz Kleinrock, Gary R. Gray Jr., Lorena Germán, Patrick Harris II, shea wesley martin, David Ryan Barcega Castro-Harris, Ozy Aloziem, Gayatri Sethi, and Dulce-Marie Flecha; and even a couple of teen writers! Everything I Learned About Racism I Learned in School provides young folks with the context to think critically about and chart their own course through their current schooling—and any future schooling they may pursue.
Snowglobe by Soyoung Park & translated by Joungmin Lee Comfort Delacorte Press
In a world of constant winter, only the citizens of the climate-controlled city of Snowglobe can escape the bitter cold—but this perfect society is hiding dark and dangerous secrets within its frozen heart. Enclosed under a vast dome, Snowglobe is the last place on Earth that’s warm. Outside Snowglobe is a frozen wasteland, and every day, citizens face the icy world to get to their jobs at the power plant, where they produce the energy Snowglobe needs. Their only solace comes in the form of twenty-four-hour television programming streamed directly from the domed city. The residents of Snowglobe have fame, fortune, and above all, safety from the desolation outside their walls. In exchange, their lives are broadcast to the less fortunate outside, who watch eagerly, hoping for the chance to one day become actors themselves. Chobahm lives for the time she spends watching the shows produced inside Snowglobe. Her favorite? Goh Around, starring Goh Haeri, Snowglobe’s biggest star—and, it turns out, the key to getting Chobahm her dream life. Because Haeri is dead, and Chobahm has been chosen to take her place. Only, life inside Snowglobe is nothing like what you see on television. Reality is a lie, and truth seems to be forever out of reach. Translated for the first time into English from the original Korean.
Hope Ablaze by Sarah Mughal Rana Wednesday Books
All My Rage meets The Poet X in this electric debut that explores a Muslim teen finding her voice in a post-9/11 America. Nida has always been known as Mamou Abdul-Hafeedh’s niece - the poet that will fill her uncle’s shoes after he was wrongfully incarcerated during the war on terror. But for Nida, her poetry letters are her heart and sharing so much of herself with a world that stereotypes her faith and her hijab is not an option. When Nida is illegally frisked at a Democratic Senatorial candidate’s political rally, she writes a scathing poem about the politician, never expecting the letter to go viral weeks before Election Day. Nida discovers her poem has won first place in a national contest, a contest she never entered, and her quiet life is toppled. But worst of all, Nida loses her ability to write poetry. In the aftermath of her win, Nida struggles to balance the expectations of her mother, her uncle, and her vibrant Muslim community with the person she truly wants to be. With a touch of magic and poetry sprinkled throughout, Sarah Mughal Rana's Hope Ablaze is heartbreaking, often funny, and ultimately uplifting, not only celebrating the Islamic faith and Pakistani culture, but simultaneously confronting racism and Islamophobia with unflinching bravery.

How Blue Jays Fans Took a Stand Against Homophobia - Pitcher Booed for Re-posting Anti-LGBTQ+ Video
Tumblr media
How Blue Jays Fans Took a Stand Against Homophobia - Pitcher Booed for Re-posting Anti-LGBTQ+ Video How Blue Jays Fans Took a Stand Against Homophobia - Pitcher Booed for Re-posting Anti-LGBTQ+ Video Homophobia and discrimination are still prevalent in sports, but the Toronto Blue Jays community showed that they will not stand for it. In September 2020, Blue Jays pitcher, Ryan Borucki, faced backlash for re-posting a video that contained anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment. The Blue Jays fans did not take the incident lightly and took a stand against homophobia. The Incident The incident occurred when Borucki re-posted a video on his Instagram account that had sentiments against the LGBTQ+ community. This video included a man making blatantly homophobic remarks and mocking individuals from the queer community. It did not take long for the Blue Jays fans to notice Borucki's post. The Backlash The Blue Jays fans are known to be inclusive and supportive of marginalized communities. Therefore, it was not unexpected that Borucki's post received swift backlash from fans on social media platforms. They were quick to call out the inappropriate behavior of the pitcher and express their disappointment. In addition to the fans, Borucki's teammates also distanced themselves from the sportsperson. They made it clear that such behavior was unacceptable and not representative of the Blue Jays team. The Blue Jays organization also issued a statement condemning the actions of the pitcher. They made it clear that homophobic and intolerant behavior would not be tolerated in their community. The Response The response from the Blue Jays fans and organization was exemplary. They showed that the baseball community can be inclusive and respectful of everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The fans' response showed Borucki and others that discriminatory behavior towards marginalized communities did not have a place in their community. The incident sparked conversations on social media and in the baseball world about the importance of inclusion and accepting everyone, irrespective of their sexual orientation. The Blue Jays fans took it as an opportunity to speak up against homophobia and to ensure that their community was a welcoming and safe space for all individuals. The Lesson The incident with Borucki serves as a lesson to all sportspeople, organizations, and fans to be aware of the kind of messages that they post on social media. It also highlighted how vital it is to speak up against discrimination and bigotry. The Blue Jays community showed that they will not stand for any form of intolerance that aims to exclude members of their community. Conclusion The Blue Jays organization, fans, and teammates showed that everyone deserves an inclusive and respectful environment. They made it clear that homophobia and hate had no place in their community. This incident sparked important conversations, and hopefully, it will lead to more actions that promote diversity, inclusivity, and acceptance in the baseball world. #NEWS Read the full article

Blue Jays bats go silent as Seattle Mariners walk it off in 11th
Tumblr media
On a beautiful summer night in the Pacific Northwest, Ross Stripling entered the dugout after five innings for a reason, and Charlie Montoyo was waiting for him with a warm embrace.
For starters, the right-hander made a few deep pitches in a game where his team needed them.
Another reason was that the score was 2-2, which released the significant pressure his hitters had been under for several weeks. Given some of the recent struggles with starting pitching, the manager and his team were experiencing an unfamiliar feeling.
However, the struggling Toronto offence was unable to deliver once more as the Mariners prevailed 5-2 in extra innings thanks to a huge three-run home run by Eugenio Suarez in the 12th inning.
The fact that the winning pitcher was a lefty they had earlier in the season DFAed, Ryan Borucki, who pitched shutout innings in the 10th and 11th, was an even wider blow for the Jays.
Twelve hits were produced by Toronto batters on the night, but they were only able to score two runs, continuing a trend in which they have scored just 14 runs in their last two games.
The Mariners, who have won six straight games and are now only two games behind the Blue Jays in the American League Wild Card race, had a huge win.
Montoyo formed a commitment to help his hitters before the game by giving them some tips on how to return to the intimidating offence that comes naturally to them.
Be tough on the pitching staff. But when a hole is made early on, it can also be difficult partly on innings that may be trying to fill it.
This one was on offence, a group of Jays batters who had combined for 12 runs in their previous five games, a dormant attack that had cost them.
There was some progress in that approach, as the Jays got runners on base repeatedly, slapping out 12 hits cumulatively. The problem was cashing them in, as demonstrated by Bo Bichette's bases-loaded strikeout in the fourth.
The Jays were 2-for-16 with runners through scoring position through eight innings, a problem that has plagued them at various points this season.
Stripling, on the other hand, was doing his job of keeping the Mariners at bay, throwing a season-high 94 pitches in five innings of work.
He gave up seven hits and a walk. They knuckled down when necessary, including six strikeouts, to keep the run total to two.
The loss dropped the Blue Jays to 0-2 in the four-game weekend series, setting up a fantastic Saturday pitching matchup between Alek Manoah and his predecessor in that role, Robbie Ray.
The loss was their sixth in their last seven games, and they blew an opportunity to move ahead of the Boston Red Sox and into third place in the AL East.

A Rays player ‘stole’ the Blue Jays’ scouting report card, and got beaned for it
Tumblr media
The Rays and Blue Jays have beef over alleged game plan theft.
There’s nothing that gets Major League Baseball teams more hot and bothered than a competitive advantage and the unwritten rules meant to keep those advantages out of the game. From the Houston Astros’ massive sign stealing controversy a few years back to the endless discussion about banning ‘sticky stuff’ from pitchers this season, baseball often feels like an endless war of one side trying to break the rules and the other side making accusations of wrongdoing. This gets particularly heated when it happens between division rivals.
The Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays have been going at it all season in a historically strong AL East. Tampa Bay has been on top of the division most of the year after winning the AL last season, and on Wednesday they clinched a spot in the MLB playoffs for the third straight year. Toronto, meanwhile, has been red hot to close the season and is now is a dead heat with the Yankees for the final AL wildcard spot. The series between Tampa and Toronto this week had major playoff implications.
Tensions were raised on Tuesday after a strange incident after a play at the plate. As Tampa outfielder Kevin Kiermaier was thrown out at home in the sixth inning on a play at the plate, a play card reportedly filled with scouting report information fell out of the wristband of Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk. Kiermaier picked up the card and went on his merry way.
Here’s video of the incident:
The Blue Jays are not happy. Last night in the 6th, Kevin Kiermaier slid into home plate and grabbed a card (video here). That card, I'm told, was from Alejandro Kirk's wrist band that fell out on the tag. On the card: the Blue Jays' game plan on pitching to Rays' hitters. pic.twitter.com/wjjuYd3Bhk
— Arash Madani (@ArashMadani) September 21, 2021
Kiermaier said he thought it was his own card that he keeps with scouting information. He said he never really looked at the card, and handed the card to the Rays’ clubhouse manager.
Here are Kiermaier’s comments after the game on the incident:
Spoke w/ Kiermaier. These are his comments. Around 5:20 pm, Kevin Cash came out to speak with Charlie Montoyo about it. The Jays are pissed. As a team source told me, "if there’s one card we wouldn’t want any opponent to have, it’s that one" More at 6:30 pm on @Sportsnet pic.twitter.com/Rp6iaGNPwM
— Arash Madani (@ArashMadani) September 21, 2021
Tampa manager Kevin Cash apologized to Toronto after the game, and Jays manager Charlie Montoyo called the incident “agua under the bridge.”
Story over, right? This is baseball, so of course not.
On Wednesday, as the Rays led Toronto 7-1 in the bottom of the 8th inning, Kiermaier was beaned with a fastball in the back. The benches promptly cleared, and pitcher Ryan Borucki was ejected.
Ryan Borucki hits Kevin Kiermaier in the back with a pitch in the 8th inning pic.twitter.com/cd8yC056OQ
— Tim and Friends (@timandfriends) September 22, 2021
All of this is kind of silly, and distracts from the fact that the AL has an awesome playoff race going on. Is Borucki going to get suspended as the Jays play their final 10 games of the season to try to get into the playoffs?
Some people are arguing that Kiermaier was in the wrong to pick up the card. Personally, it seems like the Jays are being losers by beaning him for it after it looked like the issue was settled. Regardless of what you think, let’s all agree the playoffs need to get here soon so we have something better to talk about.

Blue Jays Pitching
Tumblr media
Toronto has been reeling over the past week- they've lost five in a row (as of Sunday night) and between injuries and some players disappointing, they’re starting to be on the ropes. There’s the old adage of “you can’t win the division before Memorial Day, but you can lose it”, and with Toronto being 4.5 games out and in fourth place, they could definitely be in trouble. The Jays are in a tie for 11th in team ERA+ (109), but in a tie for 18th in FIP (4.33). They give up a lot of homers (1.4 homers a game) and are below average in WHIP (1.276 baserunners allowed an inning.) Toronto’s bullpen has been holding up despite losing Kirby Yates and Julian Merriweather, having a 3.49 ERA (fifth in MLB.)
Blue Jays Hitting
Tumblr media
Toronto’s offense has been really, really good, despite losing Springer for most of the season so far, losing Kirk for the season, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Rowdy Tellez being major disappointments. The Jays’ other major offseason acquisition, Marcus Semien, has been great, and really crushing fastballs and change ups- he’s hitting .340 with nine homers against fastballs and .379 with a homer and five doubles against change ups. He has been bad against breaking balls though: .120 with just one homer. He’s essentially back to the All Star level player he was in 2019, and a great addition to the Jays lineup.
Vladito is still killing it and living up to his promise:
Tumblr media
He’s second in offensive bWAR (2.6), leading the AL in SLG, and is fourth in MLB in OPS. He’s absolutely crushing the ball and sending it across the entire field:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vlad is leading MLB in Statcast’s Swing/Take leaderboard, which means that he is crushing pitches in the zone (17 runs above average on pitches in the zone) and not swinging at pitches out of the zone (8 runs above average in chase pitches.) It’s just honestly impressive how hard he is crushing pitches, the amount he swings and misses, but yet how rarely he strike outs and how often he’s still walking. Just a monster season for him as a 22 year old, and it’s something that we can all look forward to watching (or fearing, as long as he’s with the Jays.)

Jordan Romano of the Toronto Blue Jays (2021) bluejaysnation.com
All Arms on Deck
We are now less than 10 days away from Opening Day and there are major questions still remaining in regards to what the Toronto Blue Jays pitching staff will look like. Those range from the composition/order of the starting rotation to who will be the closer. This is not ideal for a team hoping to surprise many in the ultra competitive AL East. It’s not really ideal for any team at this juncture. Spring training is supposed to be a time for new and old teammates to get acquainted while the coaching staff makes the tough decisions on who will make up the roster once the games begin to count. Sure, there could still be a position battle or two that are going down to the wire. Maybe even a decision on which pitcher will grab the 5th rotation spot or which will take a middle reliever slot. Unfortunately, those decisions can be made for a team if injures hit. The Toronto Blue Jays certainly haven’t been sparred from that as both the rotation and bullpen are in flux due to injury.
The rotation had a hole to fill almost right off the bat when promising young hurler, Nate Pearson, came up lame with a grade 1 groin strain early in camp on March 1st. There was some hope that he would heal quick enough to still have time to get ready to take the ball for game #2 of the regular season on April 3rd. Then he re-aggravated the injury on March 16th officially ending any chance of that. Realistically though, the Jays were always going to slow play it with Nate as a way to limit his innings right away. In a season where his innings and work load are going to be monitored closely anyways, the injury made the decision to delay his start an easy one. This could be of great benefit to a team with playoff aspirations as a way to ensure Pearson is available come that time. He only threw 18 innings in an arm injury plagued shortened season in 2020 and generally teams don’t like to push pitchers beyond a 100 inning increase from year to year. That puts him at around 120 innings for 2021. That doesn’t mean he can’t push that to between 130-140 innings, but given the injury history he has accrued already chances are that won’t be the case. MLB teams now have all the analytics and technology in place to monitor everything on a player from the amount of proper recovery sleep they get to even the slightest changes to a pitcher’s body movements when they throw. So, that innings scale can slide depending on many factors rather than simply relying on an arbitrary number (ie. 100 innings increase, 100 pitches per game limit, etc.). As the most promising and dominant right hander the Jays have in their system, Nate Pearson’s loss will not only be felt in the rotation’s effectiveness but in the composition.
With perennial All-Star and Cy Young candidate, lefty Hyun Jin Ryu, anchoring the starters on Opening Day, it was expected that Pearson would follow him before getting to the next 2 lefties in Robbie Ray and Steven Matz. That will not be the case now. Instead, it appears Toronto could go with 3 lefties in a row then have 2 righties. In the 5th spot will likely be Tanner Roark. The 4th spot will be Nate Pearson’s replacement. Ross Stripling looks to be the guy for that. Neither he nor Roark have been overly impressive this spring (Stripling with a 5.19 era in 8.2 innings and Roark with an 8.44 era in 10.2 innings), so expect a fair amount of bullpen work on the days they start. Fortunately, the 3 lefties have looked great in compiling era’s of 1.50, 1.98, and 0.90 for Ryu, Ray, and Matz respectively. Of note are the performances of Anthony Kay and T.J. Zeuch who have made the decisions of the back-end starters difficult. Kay has thrown 11 innings with 11 K’s and a 4.09 era while Zeuch has thrown 7 innings with 1 K and a sparkling 1.29 era. 2 very different kinds of pitchers, but mutually a tough call to have them available to step in from the alternate site as they await the start of the minor league season in May. I have no doubts we will be seeing them early on should Roark’s and Stripling’s spring troubles leak into the regular season. Maybe even one of them ends up in the bullpen, though the Jays will probably want to keep them stretched out.
Speaking of the bullpen, the worst possible scenario took place on March 22nd as the Jays announced that new closer Kirby Yates would be down for multiple weeks following a strain of the flexor-pronator in his right pitching arm. To say this is extremely troubling is an understatement. Coming to Toronto on a low risk 1 year/$5.5 million deal this offseason, there was, and still is, hope he would regain his form from his uber dominant 2019 season. That season he was an All Star while pitching to a 1.19 era with 101 K’s in 60.2 innings and racking up 41 saves! Last season was the complete opposite, as he only threw 4.1 innings with a hideous 12.46 era in a season ended early with an arm injury. He had subsequent surgery to remove bone chips though no other structural damage was found. Hopefully this new injury also falls into that category and with some rest and rehab he is back sooner than later. Until that time, Toronto must decide how they will nail down those tight 9th inning leads. Will a de facto closer emerge from an experienced group of Jordan Romano, Rafael Dolis, Ryan Borucki, David Phelps, Tyler Chatwood, and A.J. Cole? Will a dark horse emerge like Anthony Castro (12 K’s in 6.1 innings)? Or, will they choose to go with the committee approach? There certainly isn’t enough time left in the spring to determine who will close so expect a committee approach to start with the opportunity for someone to take the job and run with it. In Romano, the Jays think very highly of his stuff and make up with pitching coach Pete Walker calling him a “closer in the making.” Do not be surprised if he is given the first save chance. If he performs as he did last season, and like he has this spring, then there is little doubt he will be the interim closer. Though, if he faulters and the Jays have to start moving down the list then it could end up being anybody’s or perhaps nobody’s job until Yates returns. Even when Yates does return, it is likely he will be eased in which could leave save opportunities up for grabs for the first month and a half of the season at least.
There is no doubt that those are major issues heading into the season, but as you can see the Blue Jays have built up some depth to help solve them. There is also no doubt there will be even more injuries and roster juggling as the season progresses. The depth will be seriously tested if it’s not being already. Pitchers and players will emerge that none of us know anything about. There will be some wonderful stories with that. It’s all part in parcel with the long grind of the MLB season where the teams that weather those challenges the best are usually the ones battling it out come September.

New on Sports Illustrated: Roark faces old club as Jays meet Nationals
Right-hander Tanner Roark will be facing his former team of six seasons when he starts Tuesday night for the visiting Toronto Blue Jays against the Washington Nationals.
Roark, who pitched for the Nationals from 2013-2018, will be trying to help the Blue Jays to their second straight win over the 2019 World Series champions when he opposes right-hander Austin Voth, who was 2-1 with a 3.30 ERA last year.
The Blue Jays won the opener of the four-game series Monday 4-1 on the strength of four solo home runs.
"I'm excited," Roark said on Monday. "It's going to be weird with no fans. I know the mound there like the back of my hand, so I'll be ready to go."
Roark was 10-10 with a 4.35 ERA last season with the Cincinnati Reds and the Oakland Athletics and signed with the Blue Jays in the offseason. He was 15-10 with a 2.85 ERA in 2014 with the Nationals and 16-10, 2.83, in 2016.
He is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in one career start against Washington, which came last season. Voth has never faced Toronto.
The Blue Jays have split their first four games of the season. The Nationals have lost three of their first four games.
Both teams were without key players to open the series. The Nationals continue to play without Juan Soto, who tested positive for COVID-19.
Soto has had one negative test, but will need two negative tests at least 24 hours apart before he can return to play, according to MLB protocol.
"The good news is he feels fine," Nationals manager Dave Martinez said on Monday. "He's got a bike in his apartment. He's got some weights in there. I know he's trying to -- the best he can -- stay in shape. I just told him, 'Keep your head up.' Hopefully this is the last of it."
Michael A. Taylor played left field in place of Soto again on Monday and was 0-for-4.
The Nationals have signed versatile Josh Harrison, who was in uniform against Toronto but did not play. Catcher Raudy Read was optioned to make room for him on the 30-man roster.
Harrison has played every position except catcher, first base and center field.
"When you play against him, you see he had that energy, that passion for the game -- the kind of guy we like," Martinez said. "The other thing is, he brings a lot of different aspects to the game. He can run, play multiple different positions -- infield, outfield."
The Blue Jays, meanwhile, were without Ken Giles (right forearm strain), who was put on the IL Monday, Travis Shaw (family medical leave), Randal Grichuk (lower back irritation) and Bo Bichette (tight hamstring).
Wilmer Font was activated from the injured list and Ryan Borucki was recalled from the taxi squad and pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief Monday to gain the win.
Anthony Bass will replace Giles as closer and earned the save Monday.
Teoscar Hernandez was moved up in the lineup to replace Bichette in the leadoff spot Monday and led off the game with a home run and also led off the fifth with a homer.
Toronto second baseman Cavan Biggio was 0-for-4 on Monday, which ended a 32-game on-base streak. After the game, Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo said that right-hander Nate Pearson will make his major-league debut when he starts the game on Wednesday.

Top Jays prospects Jansen, Reid-Foley to make MLB debuts Monday
The Toronto Blue Jays will characteristic two contemporary faces of their lineup after they tackle the Royals in Kansas Metropolis on Monday. Blue Jays supervisor John Gibbons stated Sunday that Sean Reid-Foley will make his Main League debut on the mound and he shall be caught by Danny Jansen. “I do not know what to count on, to be sincere with you,” stated Gibbons of the right-hander’s first begin. “You by no means actually do — he’ll be excited. Generally you will get too excited, however [I] did not know what to count on out of [Ryan] Borucki and look what he is performed. Debuts, these will be actually good [or] actually unhealthy.” Reid-Foley is the Blue Jays’ No. 10 prospect, in accordance to MLB Pipeline. The 22-year-old, who was Toronto’s second-round choose (49th general) in 2014, was 7-Four with a 3.50 ERA with 94 strikeouts over 82 1/Three innings with triple-A Buffalo. So as to make room for Reid-Foley, who shall be added to the 40-man roster on Monday, the Blue Jays will choice Danny Barnes to the Bisons — Toronto’s minor-league affiliate. Jansen, 23, was Toronto’s 16th spherical choose (475th general) in 2013 and is rated by MLB Pipeline because the membership’s No. Three prospect. He was hitting .275 in 298 at-bats, and led Buffalo with 12 house runs and 58 RBI. The six-foot-two, 225-pound catcher began alongside fellow Jays prospect Bo Bichette for Crew USA on this 12 months’s MLB Futures Sport, with Jansen launching a game-tying, two-run homer within the fourth inning. The Blue Jays positioned third baseman Yangervis Solarte on the 10-day disabled record with a proper indirect pressure and recalled Jansen earlier than Sunday’s collection finale in opposition to the Tampa Bay Rays “He is going to play rather a lot,” stated Gibbons. “He is right here to play, in any other case it would not do him any good to be right here, so he is aware of the blokes on the employees that he is caught this 12 months, so we’ll get a fairly good have a look at him.” https://www.cbc.ca/sports/baseball/mlb/toronto-blue-jays-danny-jansen-sean-reid-foley-1.4782856?cmp=rss https://www.news9ontime.com/top-jays-prospects-jansen-reid-foley-to-make-mlb-debuts-monday/

Reilly Johnson is greeted by Sterling Guzman (#2) and Griffin Conine (#9) at home plate after scoring on a McGregory Contreras grand slam. A smiling Tanner Kirwer looks on from the left.
The Vancouver Canadians turned back the clock with their throwback jerseys and returned to their winning ways Tuesday. The C’s dumped the Tri-City Dust Devils by a score of 7-1 at Nat Bailey Stadium for their first home victory of 2018.
The C’s took the lead with a two-out hit in the first inning courtesy of Jake Brodt. The former Santa Clara Bronco took a pitch from Nick Kuzia up the middle to score a Nick Podkul walk. Podkul scored from second after Griffin Conine moved him into scoring position with a groundout to first.
Vancouver added to its lead with another two-out run in the second. Bryan Lizardo singled to left and came around to score on a Tanner Kirwer double down the left field line which snuck past Dust Devils outfielder Mason House. Kirwer made it to third on the throw but he was left there when Vinny Capra struck out.

McGregory Contreras had a lot to smile about Tuesday night with two extra-base hits.
The third inning saw the C’s break it open. Podkul drew his second walk in as many at-bats and Conine also heard ball four from the umpire. Sterling Guzman would drive in Podkul with a base hit to left to make it 3-0 C’s. Joe Galindo took over for Kuzia on the mound but walked Reilly Johnson to load the bases. Lizardo ran the count full before being called out on strikes but McGregory Contreras would pick up the slack. He socked a grand slam to left to give Vancouver a 7-0 lead.

Joey Murray set the tone for the C’s with two shutout innings against Tri-City Tuesday.
The Dust Devils could not solve the C’s pitching staff of Joey Murray, Sean Wymer and Will McAffer who shared the first six innings evenly. They would break the shutout in the seventh against Justin Watts. Luis Ascunsion doubled and that was followed by a Luke Becker single and a House to load the bases. Jose Lezama would lift a sacrifice fly to score Ascunsion for Tri-City’s only run.
Marcus Reyes shut things down with two scoreless frames to help the C’s pick up their fourth win of the season.
C-Notes
C’s shortstop Vinny Capra did a nice job jumping to flag a high throw from Johnson to tag out Ascunsion trying to steal second in the second inning. Capra also managed to get the only hit off rehabbing major leaguer Carter Capps by lining a 77 mile-per-hour breaking ball to left. Capra would swipe second uncontested but got no further in the fifth. Capps was up to 94-95 miles per hour.
Right fielder Griffin Conine made his Vancouver debut wearing #9 after wearing #10 in Spokane. The Blue Jays second-round pick from Duke University went 0-for-4 with a walk and scored on Contreras’ grand slam. Conine also made a strong throw from right field and nearly got Reinaldo Ilarraza at third base after tagging up from second. Lizardo could not hang on to the ball at third.
Contreras had a couple of gaffes on the night, one of them purely comic relief. Contreras was charged with an error in left when the ball clanked off his glove on a Illarraza fly ball to extend the fifth. Contreras had an adventure in the on-deck circle when he was sent to the ground on a Lizardo foul ball. Lizardo would later walk and Contreras cranked a double off the manual scoreboard from Wen-Hua Sung in center field. The C’s could not take advantage as Kirwer and Capra struck out. Andres Munoz was brought in to face Capra and struck him out on three pitches registering 100, 100 and 102.
Tri-City manager and former Toronto Blue Jay Mike McCoy came out to argue that a foul ball caught by Lizardo near the C’s dugout on the third base side should have not have counted. The catch was made in an area that is marked off as out of play according to the ground rules and McCoy had a good case. However, Tre Carter was ruled out on the play to end the fifth.
Bryan Lizardo gets ready to slide into home plate with the C’s second run in the second inning Tuesday.
Kirwer made a nice running catch to help out his fellow Canadian McAffer by catching up to a fly ball at the warning track in center to start the sixth. Michael Curry then hit a slow roller to first that somehow remained fair along the first base line and that made for an easy unassisted putout by Guzman at first. The final out came when Justin Paulsen fouled out to Johnson on the third base side but not before Johnson collided with Lizardo at third base. Johnson was winded but was able to continue.
Ascunsion scored the lone run of the game for the Dust Devils after nearly hitting one over the short fence in field, settling for a double off Watts. A Becker single and a House walk loaded the bases but Watts helped himself out by fielding a comebacker from Illarraza after sawing off his bat. Watts fired it to Capra at second for the 1-6 fielder’s choice to get House at second.
Sterling Guzman adjusts his batting gloves after a single in the third inning Monday.
Vancouver had 10 hits and six walks in this one. Contreras, Guzman and Kirwer had two hits apiece. Podkul walked three times and every C’s hitter reached base at least once. They were 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base. Vancouver is 4-8 on the season, three games behind 7-5 Everett for first place in the Northwest League North Division. Tri-City drops to 6-6 and Spokane is now 5-7.
The C’s play the second game of this three-game series at 7:05 pm Wednesday at the Nat. Lefthander Randy Pondler (0-2, 2.45) hopes it will be third time lucky in getting any type of run support other than zero. Henry Henry (0-0, 1.86) is the probable starter for Tri-City.
The game will be on CanadiansBaseball.com and TSN 1040 with Rob Fai. The pre-game show is set for 6:00 pm.
Sean Wymer
Will McAffer
Marcus Reyes
Radar Gun Rundown
Murray was around 89-90 miles per hour with one of his two strikeouts at 89 MPH. Wymner had one strikeout at 90 and was at 75-76 and 92. McAffer’s offerings ranged 85-95 miler per hour, settling in at 90-92. Watts had one strikeout that clocked in at 90. He was around 88-90 and scraped 94. Reyes had strikeouts at 80 and 90 and ranged from 79-93.
