🍵☕️Caffeine Rush: A Coffee and Tea x Color speed run zine

Concept: Contributors will about 2 weeks to complete a mini piece that relates to the theme of coffee/tea, features one of the colors from our palette and incorporates one of our secret prompts.

☕️ Who can participate? Anyone who applies during the application period. No previous experience. No portfolio needed.

🍵  What type of mediums are allowed? 

Anything that can be put into a PDF, which means no music or animation. (Although contributors are encouraged to turn their pieces into animations if they choose to outside of this project).

Physical mediums like painting, clay, or embroidery is allowed as long as the contributor is able to crop and prepare files to zine guidelines. Please apply as an artist.

Chefs, baristas, and bakers are allowed to participate to create recipes using coffee/tea flavors, write about coffee blends, etc. Please apply as a writer.

Although short stories (fics) are most popular in zines; poetry or article styled writing is also welcomed.

The way this community comes together to celebrate the Hermits and each other is incredible. There are something like 1,800 fanworks on this blog from last May and early June! And that's not counting what was posted on other social media platforms as the prompt calendar spread.

I wanted to do something with that momentum - something with a little more substance behind it than last year's spontaneous "hey we should all donate $14!" So I've partnered with two amazing fandom artists you may remember from their daily posts last year - @belmarzi and @rendiggitydog - so that as a community, we could make even more awesomeness come from this event.

I have created a Tiltify campaign so that donations can be made directly to GO - I will never touch the money - and tracked for our incentives:

GRAND TOTAL INCENTIVE: For every $150 we raise for Gamers Outreach (to a minimum of $300, and a maximum that is yet to be determined, but we currently have support for up to $2,100), belmarzi will make 10 seconds' worth of animatic, featuring as many Hermits as she can fit into the time frame. You can expect to see the animatic published in early July.

INDIVIDUAL DONATION INCENTIVE: For every $65 you personally donate to the fundraiser, Rae rendiggitydog will draw you a shaded flats commission of a Hermit of your choice. These will be finished in the order in which the donations are received, and may be sent to you in May or early June.

I've put a lot of work into making this happen, and I cannot tell you how excited I am for May to arrive! The campaign will be opened in mid to late April together with the posting of this year's prompt calendar.

We've got some great stuff cooking up for y'all this year, between the whole month of fanart and the fundraising incentives! Thank you all for being a part of it! The askbox is open for questions, if you have them.

Examples of some of my art above :3 I mostly draw historical stuff but I can do modern and spec fic too, ocs or fanart or whatever else. I can also design characters if you have a basic personality and appearance etc in mind but we will need to discuss this on a case by case basis as I will certainly charge more for it.

I absolutely will not draw NSFW or extreme gore + unfortunately I cannot draw furries or mechs. And I do still reserve the right to refuse other commissions for any reason, but nearly everything else is fine. I will take max 2 commissions a week and try to have it to you as quickly as possible + you can still commission me after those 2 slots are filled but do be aware that I will not begin working on your commission until the next week, when I have finished with the previous two.

MXTX Food Zine: Round Three!

Greetings, MXTX fans! It’s December again, which means that the interest check for the third round of the MXTX Food Zine is now live! Please fill it out by December 27 if you intend to join, so we can get an idea of how many people will be participating this year.

Some specs for newcomers: This zine will be free, SFW, and 100% digital, with one dish/recipe per entry. After creator sign-ups, creators can reserve their chosen recipes on a first-come first-serve basis.

1. What’s a food zine?

Entries to the zine will consist of recipes paired with one or more pieces of fanwork: for example, you can contribute a recipe and accompanying fic or fanart that involves the recipe or dish in some way. Artists can contribute illustrated recipe cards instead of traditional fanart.

Contributors can also collaborate to create a single entry.

Please note that dishes featured in the 2022/2023 editions cannot appear again in the 2024 release.

2. Who can join? What’s the application process?

There is no application process! This is not a charity zine, so it will be 100% digital and free for downloading after it’s completed. Anyone in the MXTX fandoms is welcome to sign up.

3. What kind of recipes are allowed?

Any and all recipes are allowed. They don’t need to be traditional Chinese recipes or recipes related to the dishes mentioned in MXTX’s novels.

4. When will the zine be released?

The release date is tentatively set for October 31, 2024.

5. What are the rules about content?

The only hard and fast rule is that entries must be SFW and fall safely within a T rating according to AO3 standards. Other than that, it’s up to you: you can include your favorite rarepairs, draw crossover art, write all kinds of AUs, etc.  

6. When do sign-ups open?

Sign-ups will open on December 28 and remain open until January 4, which is when recipe sign-ups will open for creators.

7. Do I have to fill out the interest check to join the zine?

No, but please fill it out anyway if you can! :)

How to do Q-Lia/Kamio Japan fanart like you? :3

omg ty for asking :3 tis actually super easy my friend!!! this is basically what many of the oldschool kawaii adoptable makers wld do (so pwease dont get mad at me for tracing T_T i can often tell exactly what memo theyd used lol). i use paint.net cuz its super duper simple n if i ever need to do something more specific like blurring (not v applicable to pixeling) i jst open clip studio paint for a minute. its much preferable to me to do most my drawing on paint thx to the super simple ui ^_^ this method is only for official art never trace over original art of course!!! anyway i start with a memosheet that ill brighten n desaturate like this. then on a new layer i trace the lineart

this is optional if u dont have super duper bad tremors like moi, but i make lines exclusively with the curve tool! (1px with aliasing off) its probably quicker if u can jst do it by hand, but i must use my workaround. another tip for my tremor bros is turning ur mouse sensitivity all the way down. i keep it pretty low all of the time n just got used to it but u can turn it back up after ur finished. thats how i manage to color nicely :3

as for coloing i rly dont have much advice, i just keep the original memo at a glance to reference. one cool thing u can do is go to make ur subject super tiny then going to effects>color>quantize, this will make it way easier to colorpick n have a consistant palette!!!

this is my litte tremor friendly shading hack, turning aliasing back on, making the brush huge n using just the edges of it to shade specific sections that ill select with the wand c: if this is actually a hack or jst a regular method of shading idk i dont watch art tutorials myself x3

B&W: this is a thigh up image of your character(s) shaded with grayscale.

COLOURED: thigh up coloured drawing of character(s) including a patterned background.

SKETCH PAGE: 3 sketches of your character(s) on a sheet ranging from thigh to shoulders up coloured in simple greyscale.

DRAMATIC: if any of you remember my "grab bag" commissions this is of the same vein. I take the characters and you give me themes and props related to the character(s) and i will create a dramatic composition that will be rendered and painted.

unless stated, you will not receive a WIP stage of the commission unless discussed beforehand and I will happily fix any minor details (such as costume) after i have given you the final file. all commissions have the possibility to be streamed on my twitch.

It might be a bit of a strange thing to draw fanart for- but the lore for the star foxes of @trashcanwithsprinkles fic cyanide narwhal really captivated my brain in a way that really made me itch to draw. I tried to use some of existed old mural styles (like Tsurumi islands buried ones, and the one on dragonspine) to make something for a depiction of how the zvezdochoty gained illumination- or. Whatever word is most applicable for them Anskkdkd. It truly is a wonderful fic, the kind that alters your brain forever. I love genshin, it’s lore and worldbuilding- and to have the author make two new incredibly interesting species from whole cloth was incredible.

Bonus fox murals under the cut- I really like the little guys, so I tried making some more with more humanoid depictions too (plus a bonus Celestia)

Before we open contributor applications, the mods would like to answer questions raised through responses from the Interest Check and expand upon our carrd’s guidelines/FAQ.

If you are potentially considering applying for the zine as a contributor, please take the time to look over this post and read the carrd. 

Zine’s Themes: 

For our second zine, we decided to have a centralized theme for the overall project: investigation. Solving mysteries, puzzles, and problems are key elements of Remedy games. All pieces featured within the zine will focus on these ideas. 

The Oceanview is a connecting point between the Alan Wake and Control universes. It is a place of power individuals pass through on their way to somewhere else, so it’s had many guests over the years. However, pitches for the zine do not have to feature the Oceanview, they can involve different settings featured or referenced in these games, excluding the Oldest House. 

Interest Check Feedback

During the interest check, we received several common questions we would like to address:

Can we submit pitches related to Alan Wake? 

Yes, as both Alan Wake and Control both fall under the Remedy-verse, we want the zine to have a diverse spread of content featuring characters and themes from both games. 

Are Alan Wake 2 spoilers allowed? 

The zine will release a year after the first game, so we will be allowing content featuring spoilers. All pieces with spoilers will have a warning tag in the zine’s table of contents, allowing consumers to pick and choose what content to enjoy. 

Are meta/theory-crafting pitches allowed? 

No, the zine will only be featuring fanart and fanfiction. 

What about lore related documents such as dossiers/letters/case files etc? 

Yes. As with our previous zine, in-universe documentation is welcome so long as it fits the zine’s themes and criteria. 

Can I submit something which has already been posted to social media? 

No, all contributors must submit a new, original piece of content never shared before. 

Is there any specific content which will not be allowed in the zine? 

We will not be accepting typewritten, out of context manuscript pages. If a typewritten manuscript page from Alan happens to be one part of your overall story, that’s fine. 

No pieces featuring places found within the Oldest House. As much as we love the Astral Plane, the Quarry, and the Clocks Threshold, we want the zine to feature many of the other interesting settings within this universe!

All art pieces must be polished lineart or equivalent. We will not accept sketches. 

Pitch Process 

Please do NOT submit pitches that state “I’ll draw/write anything” – these will be automatically rejected. 

Please submit three detailed pitches. Include any characters or ships featured in the piece along with the general idea. Give us the elevator pitch.  

If you’re pitching a piece featuring shipping content, please state the overall plot of the piece. The mods will not be accepting stories that do not take into account the zine’s investigative themes. 

All art pieces will need to have a background. No negative white space will be allowed. 

The mods will be trying to diversify the zine’s content through the provided pitches. Of your three pitches, the mods will select what pitch to move forward with based on the zine’s tentative content spread, so please make sure these pitches are something you are passionate about and willing to create. 

Collaboration and the Creation Process

Remedy fans are a passionate bunch. Love for these games is shown in each and every creative work. And just like Remedy collaborates to bring us these amazing games, we are looking for that same dedication for the Oceanview Guestbook zine. 

We would like each of our applicants to feel comfortable collaborating with both the mods as well as their fellow contributors. We will be encouraging contributors to share WIPs with each other through more organized check-ins to receive feedback. With each phase of the creation process, the mods will provide detailed feedback and constructive critique with each individual contributor. 

Our primary mode of communication will be through Discord. The mods will be available should contributors need any assistance, to communicate any unforeseen circumstances, or to answer questions which may arise throughout the creation process. 

Final Notes

The mods are fans of the Remedy universe and love the games. We want to talk and create with fellow fans. This project is for the community, and we can’t underscore that enough. This is why our previous and next zine are digital and free. We don’t want to hide the fanworks behind a paywall. This unofficial project is made for fans by fans as a labor of love.
