My name is Kiki (She/Her) and I am 18+. I’m the one that mainly provides the art and bots that you’ll find throughout this blog and sometimes, I write headcanons/imagines as well. My writer is Rose (She/Her, 18+) and she’s responsible for writing the fanfictions and some of the drabbles. Can you explain for my friend why wotc actions after the leak are bad?

This is gonna be a bit lengthy but first I want to establish a timeline. Note the only real info we have is from the Youtuber in question, so it's not unreasonable that some of this is wrong, either intentionally or just because this guy likewise doesn't know all of what happened.

A Youtuber with about 5000 subscribers, oldschoolmtg, ordered booster boxes of March of the Machine.

2. The person he ordered them from mistakenly gave him boxes of March of the Machine: Aftermath.

3. oldschoolmtg cracked the Aftermath packs and posted videos of that online. It does sound like he was aware of difference between MOM and MOM Aftermath before he posted the videos. He said he doesn't believe the person who sold them was aware as that person isn't really into Magic (I personally know a store like this--the owner is really into Warhammer but does Magic stuff too because it pays bills).

4. Wizards says they tried to contact him but couldn't reach him. As far as I know we have no context for how they tried to contact him, how many attempts they made, or how long they waited before hiring the Pinkertons to shake him down.

5. I believe Sunday April 25 in the morning the Pinkertons showed up at this guy's house to recover "stolen" product. They threatened jail time and the Youtuber refers to them as "law men" in his video so I'm not sure if he misunderstands their role or if they misrepresented themselves.

6. After getting the cards, the Pinkerton agents provided a phone number to a person at Wizards for oldschoolmtg to call. He said this person was apologetic and cordial and said they don't believe anything was stolen but they needed the product so they could figure out how this happened to prevent it in the future. oldschoolmtg also says they said they'd send him some product to compensate for the cards the Pinkertons just took from him.

7. oldschoolmtg removed the Youtube videos of him opening the Aftermath packs. They also asked him to ask everyone else to take those vids down, claiming some sort of copyright infringement.

That's all the info I'm aware of, mostly just straight from the person who experienced this.

So why is this wrong?

First, MOM Aftermath is an embargoed product. Which means Wizards ships it out to retailers (be they big box store or LGS or online space or whatever) under a contract that they won't sell it before a certain date and time. oldschoolmtg believes the person he purchased from simply mixed up the two sets because of the similar names. He says he purchased the product and according to his recollection of the phone call, the rep at Wizards likewise didn't think he had stolen it.

That's important because the embargo agreement is between retailers and Wizards. oldschoolmtg had no contractual obligation with regard to the embargoed product. It leads me to believe the Pinkertons were involved because they'd willingly insinuate the product was stolen and oldschoolmtg had committed a crime when in actuality there was no grounds to take any legal action against the man. There was no grounds to get a warrant to search for the product. He had committed no crime. He bought Magic cards from a guy who sells Magic cards. The only actual recourse Wizards would have had if the cards weren't stolen was to pursue the guy who sold them for breaking the embargo.

The only theft that actually occurred was when the Pinkertons raided this guy's home to take cards he purchased.

That's my take given what info we know. The Youtube videos aren't actually relevant in a meaningful way--that's just how Wizards found out.

But it's actually even worse. It would have been shitty to seek out a warrant or just sic lawyers on him. Of course I don't think they had grounds for it, so instead they went extrajudicial instead. That is they took a course of action that didn't involve courts.

For those who don't know, the Pinkertons started in 1850 and operated largely as violent strikebreakers. They're still helping break strikes today. They've been hired by Amazon and Starbucks within the last three years to spy on unionization efforts. Their history is bloody and murderous. No exaggeration. Their response to workers striking and unionizing in the past has been to beat them and shoot them.

I think you can put two and two together here. What does it say for a billion dollar multinational company to send these violent thugs to the private home of a small a guy operating a small Youtube channel?

It's a threat to this guy and anybody else; if you leak our cards we will find where you live and we will come after you. Specific use of the Pinkertons is part of this intentional message. There are other security firms without the history and notoriety. And while any such action would be just as disturbing, I doubt using almost any other agency would have had quite the effect as hiring Pinkertons.

tl;dr Based on what we know it's unlikely this guy did anything actually wrong or unlawful and Wizards sent agents from a firm with a violent and notorious history to his home in an act of intimidation

Another thing I've determined while comparing Pacific Rim texts - it's highly unlikely Newt and Tendo were ever meant to have attended the Jaeger academy together, as Pacific Rim: Man, Machines, & Monsters has led many people to think.

So, PR:MMM is actually a pretty unreliable text. It's full of typos and gets a number of character names wrong. And PR:MMM is the only text that suggests anything like this. I do strongly emphasize "suggest" here, because it doesn't actually say that they went to the Kodiak Island Jaeger Academy. Instead, each character featured in this book has certain details placed into info boxes, which all use the exact same template, which includes a box titled "RANGER ACADEMY CLASS." The same template makes it sound as if Herc Hansen, the Kaidanovskys, and Hermann Gottlieb all attended the Jaeger academy in 2015. And this strongly suggests that something is very wrong here, because it's extremely unlikely given the timeline.

If we go to the novelization and look at Hermann's dossier, we can find more details on when he joined up. According to the dossier in the novelization (which is based on information provided by Legendary Pictures), Hermann's active service began on May 28, 2015. This is barely a month after Dr. Lightcap and Lieutenant D'Onofrio kicked Karloff's ass in newly-completed prototype Jaeger, Brawler Yukon. The Mark-1s are still in development. It's highly unlikely that the academy even exists at this point. At most, it's under construction. The same dossier also tells us that Hermann wrote code for the Mark-1s, and Beacham seems to agree. So basically, there's no way Hermann could have attended the academy in 2015.

Furthermore, when a Tumblr user asked Travis Beacham whether technicians/mechanics go to Kodiak Island, Beacham answered, It's another program entirely, but the pilot program can feed into it if the cut candidates elect to pursue that track.

So, it appears that the data in the RANGER ACADEMY CLASS boxes actually list when characters joined the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps. In the case of the Beckets, they actually did start by entering the academy. But unless Newt and Tendo had some harebrained scheme to become rangers and washed out partway through (which, to be clear, could make an epically funny comedy story), it's unlikely they were ever originally intended to have gone to the Kodiak Island Jaeger Academy.

but to start this off: i love oliver stark, and i am so appreciative of how important he views this storyline and the representation it provides

however

i am going to be very disappointed in him if we get through the next few episodes, and it becomes clear that they aren’t going to further develop buddie anymore. he has always been so careful and cautious when it comes to implying things in interviews/press stuff, but lately with this resurgence in his response to fandom interest with buddie (liking fanart, reposting it, talking openly about buddie in interviews, confirming things like buck thinking eddie was attractive, etc.) if they don’t go that route, it will honestly severely hurt me.

i have very mixed feelings about what is and isn’t “queerbaiting” (most of my friends would say i tend to not believe that it’s a thing, and to an extent i agree) but there are certain situations in which something does blatantly feel like baiting… to me this is one of those situations.

with both lou and edy still being around, as well as ryan’s sudden stint in pr jail, the fandom’s obsession w lou/tommy, and tim minear’s seeming interest in complying with fan-service… it’s hard to remain optimistic that they will actually give us buddie. the past two weeks have given me whiplash as a buddie fan and i am getting tired of the show using our desperation and love for this ship as a marketing tactic when they have no intention of going there (tim minear himself saying things like “i don’t like to plan endgame relationships” or “there are no plans for buddie at the moment”).

that is why the media’s sudden obsession with asking about buddie, as well as oliver’s willingness to interact with buddie content online combined with the constant flow from the set of things not going in the direction of buddie… it feels very intentional to drag us in. and if oliver is participating in that, then i am going to be very disappointed and hurt by that. he used to care so much about not getting our hopes up, but lately it feels like that isn’t the case anymore, and that getting our hopes up is their way if getting us to continue watching the show because they know that people will stop watching after having to watch years of buildup and (at times admittedly) roment subtext between them just for all of that to be completely retconned and them to say “no-homo, bro” in favor of a character/ship that came out of nowhere and has had no development.

obviously, i don’t blame os for the storyline- he’s not a writer, he doesn’t get to dictate what does or doesn’t happen. But he is the one getting all of the media attention, and using that to shine a spotlight on buddie when (if) he knows that buddie isn’t happening? it feels very icky to me and i really don’t want to have a reason to dislike him.

unfortunately it’s seeming more and more like a possibility each day as we get inundated with bts info that doesn’t bode well for us at all.

If buddie doesn’t go canon/ they don’t show they’re heading in that direction in the next few episodes, I still would not blame Oliver at ALL for his recent more openness about buddie

(Idk how familiar you are with me and if you are you’ll know this but if you’re not lemme clarify I use bulletpoints a lot but not to be curt or rude I just like breaking things into chunks🫡)

1. He has made sure to constantly clarify that he doesn’t know how things are gonna go and he has no control over things- i mean EVERY time he spoke about buddie

2. He’s also a fan of the show guys, yes yes he’s an actor and it has different implications I agree 100% but also if he’s choosing to ship his character or enjoy fan work that’s his prerogative and sure he can lurk privately like he has in the past but also he probably knows that implications aside fans who make that work will be ecstatic to see him actually liking the stuff

3. The man legit said he deleted social media at one point cos he didn’t wanna like or share stuff that’d accidentally give people false hope for buddie or bi Buck but he has silently agreed for years and he hated not being able to confirm bi buck till now

4. He’s been a HUGE advocate for us both on the buddie front and bi buck front and that deserves recognition

5. As you said there is a LOT of bucktommy love rn which is great and all but may draw focus away from buddie, if Oliver is intentionally trying to get buddie fans to keep going it could genuinely just to show that buddie fans are still aiming for buddie endgame and that they still make up a huge portion of the fandom

6. Writing is CONSTANTLY in progress on 911 so again buddie fans being more vocal and abc and writers seeing such positive responses to him so much as interacting with buddie posts or answering buddie questions give them a gauge of audience’s wants (granted Tim has stated it’s not a HUGE factor for him) and also keep in mind s8 is still in the books so even proposals of storylines may be in the talks rn

7. When he talks he is VERY careful about his words and is very well spoken on the topic like yes there have been more stuff we can read into and be optimistic about but you can tell that he in no way is saying specific things to bait people, when talking about existing buddie things he talks about HIS interpretation and uses lots of maybes and might’ve beens and I see how that could be and when he talks about future buddie he talks about being open to it talks about what he’d want from it and he talks about not having control or knowledge of it happening

So yeah he has done/said things that I absolutely think warrant optimism (I made a whole post about it) but if it doesn’t pan out that optimism should a- still be there b- not turn into blame for him

Okay now Oliver aside- the questions being asked about buddie and all the buddie promotions I would be side eyeing the higher ups for if it’s for nothing because yes all the articles and stuff are stuff being pre-approved by abc and the people higher up than cast members or the journalists but I would also keep in mind that s8 is still in the works so hope is not lost even if s7 isn’t what we hoped for because keep in mind we had only 10 eps to work with too

I know that I have reblogged some posts about this person, hoelys-blog, already but I think I should try to condense the info down to one post and provide some updates (updated information will be colored like this, or featured towards the bottom of the post.)

This person, who has identified himself as Lino to someone who measaged me (who was scammed by him), reaches out to you via DM to promote that they have commissions going on. Showcasing art that they have stolen and altered from other people. As far as I know, only one artist was able to get majority of their work taken off of this guy's "commission post(s)". I have reblogged some posts about that artists experience, you can see all the posts I mention if you search the #hoelys-blog tag on my blog or by clicking on any posts tagged as that.

Any effort to call out this scammer on his posts are made in vain- he deletes any reply or reblogged comment so that folks visiting his page cannot see any attempt at warning on his posts- UNLESS YOU CHECK THE REBLOG AREA AND VIEW THE TAGS.

He saw my attempts to warn people, deleted my replies/comments on his posts and I woke up to see that he changed his blog name.

All of his blogs feature stolen and altered artwork, and most are advertising that their commissions are open. If any of you know any of the stolen pieces' original artists, please let that artist know so that they can file the proper reports.

What we can do in the meantime is report each post that has stolen artwork promoting that he has commissions open. This goes for anyone that you see that does this- you report them for phishing. What I did was also provide a link to a post that showcases the the source of each stolen piece of work within that post. Tumblr support will reach out and ask you to provide links to the report you make!

Speaking of, you can access that particular post via the #hoelys-blog tag, look for a post made by @tamiisnthere!

This person also seems to make their rounds in different fandoms based off of tags that I've read- so it is not just One Piece or DBZ.

This person is known to be manipulative in the DMs, and get you to take pitty on them. They also will straight up beg. So I emphasize DO NOT ANSWER BACK WHEN HE DMS YOU. Just report commission posts as phishing before you block him and delete the convo. If you do talk with him, screenshot/keep your messages so that you have proof.

If you have been scammed by this man, please report the account(s) he used so that you can get your money back. He uses multiple PayPal accounts, someone that was scammed by him has given me each email that they are aware of. (I am debating if I post them or not...)

I highly encourage people speak of their experience with this person in the comments or in reblogs of this post. That way we can see how deep this rabbit hole goes.

By all means, do NOT harass this person. Please only report and block him!

       "Mom!"

       The watering can falls from your hand at the sound of that voice. It clatters and the little water left splashes your shoes as it hits the rocky floor, yet you can't care less about picking it up when you see Frisk running towards you, their arms outstretched, smile radiant, and eyes glossy. You push yourself off the ground, though with struggle as your legs shake and give in from anticipation. It takes a few more seconds of stumbling until you're finally able to stand up straight, and – by the time you do – they're already in your arms, their light weight barely making you budge regardless of your current, weak self. Everything around you: the garden, the fountain, the picnic table, and even your own body feel unearthly, and you're certain it'll all end the moment you take too long to blink.

       "Words can't describe how much I've missed you, dear," you state, almost in a whisper when you fail to raise your voice, sorrow making it difficult to do without breaking.

       You hug Frisk as tight as the knot on your chest. Tears rush down, staining your arms until you hide your face against their shoulder and squeeze all your distress away. They feel fragile in your grasp, and fleeting, too – like letting go will cause them to crumble, then disappear. As much as you don't want to, you still begin to loosen up bit by bit until your embrace is a gentler touch, almost ghostly. Then, you pull back and wipe your face with a handkerchief you retrieve from your pocket, and offer your child another when you notice they're in a similar state, although not as bad as your own. Even if it isn't real, the last thing you wish is to let them see you somber. That's about the least you can do to make up for how many faults you've found while analyzing the reasons they went missing under your care.

       "hey, kid. where'd ya run off to? ya can't just-"

       Your arms act instinctively at the sound of an unfamiliar voice, these wrapping firm around Frisk again, like a snake with a hamster, minus the intent to cause any harm.

       "oh."

       The person behind that voice stands at the entrance of the garden, and – while you try your best not to – your mind ends up jumping to negative conclusions when you see just what type of monster he is.

       "Stay back!" Fearing the dream has become a nightmare, you close your eyes and squeeze Frisk harder, yet you soon loosen when they gasp for a breath. "And state your reason for visiting first."

       "well…"

       You hear footsteps, but you refuse to look at him.

       "i'm sans, one of your kid's friends from the underground," he says. "frisk told us they couldn't stay with tori, since they've got another mom up here, and now here i am. they gave me your address, we gathered some info to make sure you were still around, and then i drove us here. the rest of the convent interrogated me before they told me to go straight to the garden, so you can ask 'em if you're suspicious." There's a brief spell of peace and quiet as you hear him debate about something with himself. "sorry if this's kinda nosy, but…" There's a long pause in his words. "how does that work, exactly? you havin' a kid, i mean. aren't nuns supposed to be married to, uh, god, and not, well… a husband?"

       You scoff and feel your face form a glower on its own. "I'm not married, and Frisk isn't my biological child, though… I don't really see that detail as relevant to my love for them." Your fingers bury into Frisk's hair as you stroke their bangs away and kiss their forehead. "It matters not whether they're biologically mine."

       They shift, kiss your cheek, and push you aside, then tug at your sleeve persistently, insisting without a word for you to address the elephant in the room.

       You sigh, breathe back in, and open your eyes.

       It's impossible not to flinch when you take a better look at the monster: far less daunting than you were expecting, but still the most unnatural thing you've witnessed since having to interfere with a violent human at the front of the orphanage. The skeleton wears a black suit with hints of red, and the grin he carries appears shielded with dishonesty, contrasting with his direct and unwavering stare. Though the feeling of uneasiness differs from peering into the eyes of someone who has no fear of taking a life away, gazing into his irises still brings about uncertainty. You can't digest how detailed his body is, and how what little bones are exposed from his suit move in sync with each step he takes. It's like watching the most realistic, computer-generated creature in the real world rather than in film. What makes it a chilling experience is that he's actively acknowledging your presence, and that his irises follow your movements as you dust your clothes and fix yourself up after the messy hug. 

       He's not much taller than you or even Frisk, and yet...

       You feel small, and how broad his body seems contributes to that.

"They had gone missing three months ago, and I…" You bring your hands together and bite back another tear, then face the ground to avoid meeting with what looks like Death, but formally dressed. "I can't express how much I grieved over their disappearance." Momentary courage allows you to look at him directly. "Who are you to my child? And… Who is this 'Tori' person?"

       A chilly breeze of awareness arrives when you unclasp your hands and stare at your palms to see traces of soil smeared on your skin, most of it you believe is now wiped off on Frisk's attire.

       "Frisk!" you exclaim, eyes broadening as you look next to you. "I forgot I-"

       They're already standing in front of the skeleton, with their arms fully extended as they wait while he searches through his suitcase.

       He retrieves a full set of clothes, a hair pin, and a stuffed teddy bear, then pats their head before they run off inside the church.

       If you were jumpy before – even with the company of Frisk – now being alone with the skeleton leads to your body turning awfully rigid, and for a stiffer silence to build up between you.

       "do ya have some time to spare, miss?" he asks, zipping the suitcase closed and throwing it over his shoulder. "i needa talk to ya 'bout Frisk."

       This has to be a dream, at least.

       There's no way you're staring at a breathing, moving, talking skeleton who'd somehow been left in charge of sending Frisk off towards you.

       You should've known today wasn't real since the local news announced that a large crowd of monsters of all shapes and kinds had emerged from the Underground, like some sort of Halloween Horror film.

       "It's my first time seeing them in months," you reply, narrowing your eyes at him. "Of course, I do!" You stare at your hands again. "But... Could you allow me a minute to wash up?" Then, you glance at your uniform. "I've been gardening since early morning."

       Whether this is all a dream or a nightmare, you should at least look presentable for either outcome.

       "sure." He shrugs. "take your time."

       You throw half a strawberry at a bird in your garden, lured by the sweet scents of the food you've set up on the table.

       It flies off back into a tree when it picks up the treat, and – when you're positive there's no other hungry animal waiting nearby – you throw the other half on the flowers and watch as the leaves rustle and stop when reaching the spot.

       Your next chore is to wash your hands by the faucet near the garden and continue setting up the rest of the table when you return.

       "ya know," Sans says, sitting on the chair you gesture him over to. "from what frisk told me about you, i was kinda expectin' a lady older than tori herself."

       You finish pouring tea to look at him and lift an eyebrow. "Pardon?" 

       Although left without an answer, you push on by arranging some shortbread cookies and thinly sliced fruit on a pair of ceramic plates while you wait for him to say something.

       He's observing your every move, and there's a limit to how much of that you can tolerate, but fear causes you to keep your mouth shut and carry on.

       "and it makes a lotta sense."

       "...Care to elaborate, sir?"

       Still being out in the garden is what has kept you sane this whole time. Were you in an enclosed space with the skeleton, you wouldn't have lasted a second. There's just something wrong about looking at him and being aware he's a living creature – that he has a human's level of intelligence, and that he's judging you for acting like an old lady in spite of being in your twenties. You want this to end, yet if this is your punishment for not being a good enough mother, then you're bound to push on. You just have to be patient. And you just have to try not to… widen your eyes every occasion you figure out anything new about him. The basics – while covered – are already overwhelming on their own, but actually seeing him laugh and joke around like any other human drives you mad.

       "you're makin' me tea, servin' me cookies, insistin' ya do every little thin' yourself," he says, touching a finger from his right hand with his left index finger for each observation he lists, "you're good with birds – probably other animals, too, and you're wearin' a type of dress only someone over her sixties would wear," he remarks, unwinding with a breath out when he shows all those statements take up his entire hand, "that's already five things, and i'm barely just gettin' to know ya. when did ya start out as a nun, anyway?"

       Porcelain and ceramic clink as you set what's now unneeded away and leave only the cookies, fruit, tea, and communion items out on the table.

       "Since my eighteenth birthday. It's been thirteen years."

       You prepare the communion, first by setting aside a piece of sacramental bread, and then a small portion of grape wine in a paper cup.

       "whoa." He whistles. "since that early?"

       You ignore his comments while you finish setting everything else up, the last thing being to bless both the food and the communion. You then stand up, pick up the tray with the bread and wine, and offer it to him. How fast your heart races makes it so that your fingers shake as you grab the bread.

       "Open your, um…" You frown. "How does your skull work?"

       "you can touch, if you wanna."

       Your eyes glue to his face, and inordinate curiosity fights with basic decency. He's a stranger, and yet he's being as casual as you would expect an old friend to be. You want to ask him to stop – that his existence alone as a skeleton is still something you're barely getting adjusted to, but common sense and more than enough years of your work in the convent have taught you better than that. Just as you're adjusting to him, he's likely doing with you and Frisk. Expecting him to act all formal would be rude, as would be him asking you to be casual around him. That's for friends, not strangers. Though if this really isn't some sort of Telephone game version of the classic Alice in Wonderland tale, then you hope you can both get used to one another later on.

       "I shouldn't." Your gaze stays on his face. "But, then again…"

       He chuckles, and his irises lighten up, something you've now associated with him being either happy or amused.

       "Are you sure?"

       "go wild."

       You touch his cheekbone and press your thumb against it. The texture's similar to semi-hardened clay, and you leave a mark on his skull, though it fades after a few seconds. Worry stays at the thought of hurting him, so you brush your fingers at that spot again, softer this time. 

       "That's…" You pull back. "That's... interesting?"

       He winks. "and you're great at describing it."

       You stay quiet and shake your head, at a loss for words for what you feel to be the third occasion today – and it's still only one in the afternoon!

       His teeth part as you move on to what you were doing. Despite physical contact, your heart's calmed down more, and you can stare at him for longer without questioning reality and science. With a long and steady breath, plus the reminder to keep calm, you pick up the bread again and drop it on…

       …his tongue (?), then watch as he chews it and passes it down with the wine.

       This is normal.

       You're not delusional.

       And the news report is completely legitimate.

       What you have to do is convince yourself to believe all that.

       "thanks for sharing a part of your world with me." He grins. "and for the blessin', too."

       "It's not much, sir." You smile. "I'm... only thankful you've brought Frisk here, safe and sound."

       His expression glooms on par with his posture. 

       Meanwhile, you set the tray back down and sit on the bench across from him.

       The garden feels too calm now, as if nature itself has sensed the monster's shift in mood. You're tempted to ask him directly about what's brought about such a sudden change, yet you know you're in no place to do that. Frisk is sleeping off the exhaustion from their journey in the security of their bedroom, meaning that asking them to do it is completely out of the question – not to mention, you don't want them to do the work for you, nor impose anything as complicated as this on them. Growing restless, you pick up a cookie from your plate and munch on it during your wait. The amount of time that passes on is sufficient for you to eat two more, and even drink your first cup of tea.

       "uh, yeah…" he says, mumbling. "'bout that…"

       His gaze lifts from the grass to your eyes. 

       "frisk might've technically... died a few times during their journey through the underground. the only reason they're still alive is cuz of how things worked down there. didn't wanna pull that sorta bandage off so quickly, but i figured you should know this first before they tell ya about their experiences."

       "...Wh- What?" you snap, standing up. "Is that supposed to be a joke?"

       "afraid it isn't."

       The last thing you can register as anger overcomes your heart is the sound of the tea cup hitting the ground with a crash, sending shards flying across the floor.

       You march off towards him, stand in front, and point at the door leading out of the garden.

       "Get the hell out of my church, you sick-minded beast!"

       "please, let me explai-"

       "Get. Out."

       All you see is red as you lunge at the monster and grab him by his shirt's collar, lifting him off the chair.

       Him weighing no more than Frisk allows you to take him to the nearest wall and slam him against it.

       "...A bandage?" You cackle, disbelief manifesting through the noise. He doesn't struggle, so you pick that up as a sign for you to tug at him harder. "My child died, and you call that ripping off a mere bandage?" You press yourself against him when he starts to shift.

       "there's more i-"

       You cut him off again by tugging his tie along with the rest of his shirt.

       "Shut up," you shout. "If this is a nightmare, you're more than welcome to disappear and let me go back to sleep. I... I want you out of my damn sight the second I release you!"

Malachite Milestones Wave 3

Welcome everyone to the start of the event!

What better way to celebrate Pride month than a Rare Pair and Poly Ship event? This runs through the entire month of June.

Event Info/Reminder

This is open to everyone!

17 ships were voted to represent the Active Roster (will be found below the line). These ships are split into 3 sections to give a variety a chance of winning.

The overall winners of each section will win their own channel in the discord server. Since the focus is on Ao3 but we still want creators of other media forms to participate, a wildcard ship will win a channel as well based on these submissions. The top ship between all sections will be given a drawing by an amazing Maribatter!

Another wildcard will be revealed halfway through the month. This wildcard will also receive a channel.

Every fic gets 1 point. As certain milestones are completed, they will receive extra points for their ship! (For the list of milestones, see the informational document in 'Important Links')

Every couple days there will be updates on Tumblr as to how the scores are looking. All milestones hit will be shared here as well!

Okay, Now I Can Talk About Annette's Vodou

Sike! I have to detour through Maria's summoning first. Spoilers for Nocturne will be said here so please stop reading from here if you haven't finished the show.

I know I watched the trailers and saw her summoning birds and thought it was cool but it still took me aback to see it in the show. And I think it's because, for one, knowing that her mother was a speaker made me question why she didn't know speaker magic and, for two, it was the first set of magic that needed a not-plot-relevant explanation for how it works. In the first show, the only times we got explanations for the magic was when something big was happening and the explanations served as part of the setup such as Doctor Saint Germain in the Multiverse of Madness and The Parent Trap: Alucard's Nightmare Editon. For Maria, there wasn't a plot reason for her powers being explained, it just seemed like the show had to provide one because the question was gonna be asked as we were watching. After all, she was summoning animals from somewhere and no other character we have seen had powers to teleport beings from one place to another so casually. Okay, so we have a daughter of a speaker magician who doesn't use speaker magic and we know that her daddy is definitely not capable of teaching it to her so what gives, right? Thus the show (read writers) felt compelled to break a convention from the first show and give us an explanation so that we could understand Maria's abilities and introduce the existence of other realms- something that was introduced in the first Castlevania via Saint Germain: Into The Germainer-verse. And that's fine, nothing too complicated, her relationship with the animals she summons seems to be something both originating from her magic and also from her using them in every day life. Cool! The alternate realm even has a name: the Other World. Alrighty, so I'm certain that it's that simple and we won't need anything else to be explained.

Except there is... turns out that the Otherworld is part of Celtic/Gaelic/Britonic myth which would explain why Maria's powers are different than her mother's as they most likely stem from her father's side of the family. An odd thing to leave out, no? I almost thought it was like Forgemastery where it was a Castlevania original form of magic. A small dive into the native roots of her magic could have added a bit more to her character and have the double effect of prepping us up mentally for Annette's Vodou especially since the two were directly compared but also to help showcase just how different Vodou is from people's traditional views on faith and magic.

Now I should say that my understanding of Vodou is coming from being an outsider to the faith but still connected to it culturally due to my ancestry, upbringing, hearing stories, etc., and then having to fill in the blanks with some research. This isn't gonna be accurate Vodou info because we're talking about a faith with three major variants that all have been pretty secretive for most of their existence due to religious oppression, demonization, and centuries-long attempts at exploiting and capitalizing on their "exoticness". So with all that said, take what I say with a good amount of salt.

Edouard says that Maria's Otherworld sounds like Annette's ancestral plain which is right in the sense that there is AN ancestral plain similar to the Otherworld. AN as in one because, in Vodou, there's multiple "nations" or families of spirits, with each spirit behaving and acting differently in some accordance to the nation they're in. The first red flage here is that the ancestral plain we see is pretty ambiguous and is just a gaggle of spirits in some ethereal place and the spirits themselves are mostly just diversely colored shadows save for Annette's mambo (teacher), Cecille. The next red flag is that Annette's magic is her own. In Vodou, powers are given by the spirits themselves, there's no level of spiritual genetics that can just imbue you with magical ability. Why? Because a major lesson in Vodou is that our strength comes from those who came before us and we can use them to support us as long as we reach out to them. Removing that aspect of Vodou from the equation just turns Annette's magic in regualr magic but with some Haitian flavor on it. And all of this is made most apparent than the biggest red flag...

THEY BROKE PAPA LEGBA'S NECK!?

So, Papa Legba is one of the most beloved of Lwa. First of all, you can't do much without him being involved as you have to talk to him first. Have you ever lived in a neighborhood and there's this gentle old man always sitting at his porch whose basically everybody's grampa? That's Papa Legba and his "house" is the entirety of the lwa nations (although he's considered to be from the Rada nation, one of the major nations I mentioned earlier). But he ain't no slouch and to cross him is to play one of the biggest FAFO games in your life. He's the head guard of all crossroads, doorways, etc., so him being summoned to deal with a portal to Hell and Forgemastery machine sounds appropriate but who thought it was a good idea to have him die? Is he dead? Just... why? How? Can spirits just die now? Ugh... on top of that, they could have just had him possess her. Usually, when Vodou practitioners want something from a lwa, the lwa can only interact physically through a human body so a rite is performed for the lwa to "dance in the head" of a trained practitioner who personally works with them. I can understand cutting corners in the show so that all Annette has to do is focus and call the name of a lwa but this would have been cool to see, allows greater focus on Annette, and allows you to have Papa Legba there without doing him dirtier than what American Horror Story did to him by having him just stand around until his neck gets turned intoa tetris piece.

You can see why I had to take this long to get to my main point, right? The first Castlevania used the straightforwardness of their magic to great effect but Nocturne introduced two new forms of magic with rocky starts because they don't match the formula established by the first set of magic. I hope that we get to see better representation of both.

And we're back Bestie! Thanks for the patience while I recovered & got caught up w life.. I figured there wasnt much sense in providing a semi-coherent ask ha.

Ok so: First, it will make sense after reading but I so wish I could provide some pics for you via anon..

Went to the Sunday game. I didnt even ask to know in advance, but by chance the group/person that took responsibility for tickets to the game got seats a handful of rows up from behind the Dallas bench. I was just in disbelief w that given our jokes on the blog here. Our dear Lou is just so damn cute in person. And by every indication from that afternoon, an incredible teammate. Shes constantly supportive, super engaged, and you can tell things will come together for her before long on the court. Her being such a lovely professional didnt help lessen any appeal! 😣 Anywhooo it would be generous to say shot my shot Im afraid - but as luck would have it, there was a moment where she did a little happy dance spin around to the crowd when celebrating a teammates made 3 pointer (they led at this time) and ended up having genuine eye contact and a small smile back with me. So guess we can say there remains some small hope afloat for LouTea? Or at least argue that it wasnt an absolute failure by me on your behalf lol! My shy, yet somehow also overly confident self (maybe a certain attitude tends to come w being 5'2"?) will take it 🙈

So sitting where we did, actually found ourselves not far from Jacy Sheldons family who were at the game! Seemed nice, pretty quiet during the action. As a College WBB follower that was just kinda wild to me. And there was one other woman (maybe one more in the group) seemingly around Jacy's age w the fam in a custom top w her name, but I didnt recognize at a quick look. Dont think they were former teammate(s) though, so curious who they mightve been? Dont know much about JS off the court. Last but not least, a little down from me, I kid you not there was a woman wearing a VT Kitley jersey. I could only die laughing internally to myself, thinking of sharing this later. Not the most implausible place/location to see one tbf, but we honestly cant escape the OG lore!

Anyways the event was a great time all around. Highly recommend a WNBA game to anyone ofc. I was happy to see a Mystics win (and an interesting game) since Im usually bad luck for my/home pro teams in person.

Actually P.S. Li has such a cool vibe! Very sad to not get to watch her play but gives a fun, animated energy from the bench, to her credit. Easy to see why shes so well liked. And I dont know if you happened to see Shakira Austin that day, but holy hell. She is so tall and so stunning it blows the mind in real life. And while Kira is actually single (perhaps a nice fyi for some of you), I should be clear, Lou doesnt need to worry at all about competition. Theres no way little, sweet me would ever dare to handle a 6'5" woman with such a crazy side 😅 said with complete and total affection for her

Brief explanation on the Outer Realm Multiverse

This is an answer to an ask ( about the differences between ORM and IRM Dark Lords), that I felt held some interesting info. There will likely be more in depth posts about this at a later date, since this is a very complex and vast topic.

To explain the differences I feel I need to explain more about how the realms are differentiated (this is more complex than what I am saying here; but I will try to summarize.) When gathering information from the ORM(outer realms multiverse- for ease of writing) it comes in many ways and the concepts and energies need to be interpreted by the mind, to be understood and communicated. However not all energies information coming through can be conceptualised/interpreted by the human brain, (it can be trained to be receptive to these energies and interpret info an extant but some of it will always be elusive) so what follows is the explanation in a way that the human mind can conceptualise it. With what I am saying here I am not meaning to come across as dismissive, derogatory or ableist or anything. This is just the truth of how the energies, realms and beings actually are and behave.

As I have mentioned before the outer realms I refer to are and can be conceptualised by the human mind; as a different multiverse entirely. There are multiple multiverses in existence and this is one of them. The ORM has a kind of separateness that can be hard to conceptualise/understand for humans. This is because of how the human energy systems work and the environment we live in, humans are unable to and can literally not register or conceive of certain energies ( kind of like how we can’t see ultraviolet or certain colours). The inner realm multiverses(IRM) which include; earthen realm where we are now, astral planes, otherworldly realms of IRM (like Yggdrasil, various godly realms, the various faiths underworlds, afterlives etc), parallel dimensions, timelines and planes to earthen realm, matrix level realms of this earth (such as the qliphoth, sephiroth, various trees of life etc) and more. As well as internal inner worlds mental planes, fae realms, natural realms, etheric realms etc. Basically everything humans are aware of- so like fantasy, fiction etc that kind of thing- is part of the inner realm multiverses. The inner realms multiverse has a kind of cohesiveness that the ORM doesn’t. It is common for example on earthen plane to have an experience of ie;  the potential of being able to learn something/grow from everything we go through, the potential to recover. Also ideas such as “you will never be given more then the soul can handle” in terms of lessons, “ask the universe and it will always provide like what you need etc.” Everything could be conceptualised as being of benefit or potential lesson for you in some way in an overarching manner. A unity and a sense of “oneness” with others/ the universe itself, the macrocosm microcosm ideas, the soul itself never being injured permanently etc- the ability to always recover etc. All of these things are part of the inner worlds experiences. For the outer realms; many of these concepts that humanity “depends” upon or knows to be “Truth” are not applicable. Some things can be similar but it is not “across the board” the same, given how the energies work, how the beings interact and behave, that kind of thing. What I have been told by the demonic divine (when I refer to the demonic divine I am referring to those of the outer realms) is that the earthen realm is kind of like a pocket world/realm in the vastness of existence. And that humanity is very young, child like in a sense- since on this “rendition” of the earthen realms there is little acknowledgment of other beings in existence- the inner realms are also kind of “protected” in a way as well.

 All the conceptualisation of parallel realms and dimensions that are relevant or connected to the earthen realms; are part of the inner realms multiverse, but it is not exactly part of the outer realms. That is why I use the concept of another multiverse entirely; since it portrays this distinction well enough. In the outer realms; not everything one encounters will be to you or your paths benefit, you may not be able to recover or learn anything from it and it can destroy you completely, permenantly. Also while in the inner realms there are concepts of like a “spectrum” for example of “gender,”(I’m not too sure about this as an example but I can’t really think of another to illustrate this) experiences etc. On the outer realms there is a kind of a purity to the energies. Inner realms humans (on this plane idk about all other “renditions” of humans in parallel realms etc) have like yin and yang inside of them that is in a state of motion and a certain type of etheric body structure, with like qi/prana/ chakras etc. Outer realm beings do not have that – though some may do. Some can shift shapes fully and are fluid in their appearance energies etc, others take on an “aura” of something else etc readily, but at least for the demonic divine beings (there are other beings in ORM of course but my focus is on demonic divine) at Their core They don’t have such of a spectrum, They are more pure in the type of energy They present and hold. They are mostly at either end of the spectrum rather then the spectrum exiting in one individual ( though some species are more able to change then others). They don’t have both or all energies inside of them- generally at least for those I have met. Also the ORM Demonic divine are of a state of pure darkness, They don’t “have to” have like light to balance it out. (as I explained more effectively in other posts.) Also, not everything out there is “divine” in energy. In the ISR (inner spiritual realms) there is a kind of experience that everything is divine or comes from divinity- as though the source well/point of the earthen realms and inner realms is Divine- in the ORM it does not. And while the ORM Demonic Divine are “divine” level energies- as a basic and general explanation, not all demonic beings come from the same source well that is divine. But for the purposes of talking about it in public and for ease of understanding it is referred to as divine. But this is also why I do not really consider the demonic divine to be gods- They are god-like and god-level but that is not the same as the human concept of gods- however again for ease of discussion and understanding They can be referred to as gods. To some different species of beings in ORM the Demonic Divine beings are worshipped as gods. And the DLs are gods but also more than that. All demonic divine beings in ORM are immortal, They cannot be killed. Nor even really injured in any way that matters- (at least by human concepts energies etc.) The idea of mental illness and disease as humans know of it, does not affect/ is not applicable to the ORM Demonic Divine as They experience things differently and have different energetic systems. While They may have disease and injury in Their own way, it is different. Death as it is understood among humans and in ISM, does not mean the same thing out there. The OSW Demonic Divine also do not really have multiple energetic bodies in the way humans do- They kind of only have one and it is all of Them- but it is more complex than what I am saying here.

In the ORM there are different species of demons, Not all are Dark Lords, and the Dark Lords; while often have military and social standing both, can also be more focused on one or the other. They can be kind of thought as in a similar vein to how celebrities may be treated among humans. It’s not an exact example though. Not all Dark Lords are rulers specifically, but They do oversee certain energies, source wells etc and are part of those source wells. The ORM dark lords most often have a journey to complete before They become dark lords. And there are equally powerful and respected demons out there who are not DLs. Not all demonic species have a Dark lord as a ruler, and there can be multiple dark lords of a certain species, and almost none in other demonic species. The Dark Lords generally are part of a Core group/council connected to Satan or are connected to it in some way, yet not all dark lords and demonic beings are “under” Satan. Even if Satan is an Emperor and is the Dark Lord connected to the demonic divine darkness source well. Also each species basically has a core realm (which is actually more like an entire world- but I call them realms since they are also multidimensional) that They generally reside on. Though They can travel between. Each of these realms is at a different vibration of energy, so sometimes it can be harder to “reach” in a sense.

Most Demonic divine beings in ORM do not know about humans (existence). And often some that do know, do not care about them, nor are particularly interested in connecting nor guiding them. Very few may be interested in humans or connected. As I have explained in other areas the Dark Lords of ORM if They feel inclined can “hop on” or use the currants of energy that the IRM dark lords hold or are- to come through and connect and so use that “name.” Even if that is not actually the ORM DL’s actual name or energies. The ORM DLs find that currant that is most similar- ( which tbh is not often that similar but They make do with what They can get.) Not all ORM demonic divine Dark Lords are able to be "reached" by humans ( if any) via Their inner realms “counterpart” either. It truly is up to the ORM DL if They connect or not, humans have no say in it.

The reason I am connected is because of my soul. What I have been told ( by the DLs) about humans connecting or attempting to connect to the ORM DLs or demons- is this. If the human does not have a soul that originates in the ORM then it is extremely unlikely and very very rare that a human will connect to them. Most humans are also not souled from that realm, I have been told its only like a handful that actually are. Really; only those who have a soul that originates in this realm can connect at this level of vibration (in an organic manner), since the difference in vibrations is vast. This is because of the nature of the vibrations, and unless made aware of this level of vibration by a being from this place- most humans will not be able to or open enough to register it is even there ( this goes into how the ORM darkness is not present in this earthen realm; I am working on that as part of my journey as a priestess though- but it needs to be seeded here.). ORM Demonic Divine energy is very high and very pure in its essence, if that is not the natural core vibration it is very hard to connect with. It can be learned how to do so by the human, but there is a lot of “purification,” and much training (by a being from that level so they can link you to it) and attuning that needs to happen. The human also need to be very good at traveling to otherworlds (more in a shamanic sense of out of body rather than general “astral travel)- since the ORM is not connected to the astral in the way other realms are. Now if a DL from ORM has an interest in a human for a specific reason They can come through and connect and potentially make the training to connect easier. Yet this is very rare and unlikely. If it happened it is most often because the human has a soul origin to that realm. Since as I mentioned earlier the Demonic Divine being out there are not often interested in humans or earthen realm. Some rare cases a demonic being may be interested to connect with a human as like a guide or something- but that is more like a “holiday” for the ORM Demonic Divine since it is an opportunity to experience this realm. But this is again a very rare event.

As for what differences are between IRM and ORM demons and how to tell; I would say the degree and vibration of energy. The ORM demons have very intense and almost cosmic like level energies ( I mean actual cosmic, not like zodiac, or solar system – which is really only relevant to earthen realm). It can often be read as pure darkness. The ORM while have immense knowledge experiences etc and also of human “concerns,” They often are not particularly interested in it. As mentioned earlier most humans cannot differentiate the darkness and are not open or aware enough to even sense this energy. The ORM Demonic Divine have no affiliations to any human religions, They are not Infernals. There is one species of ORM Demonic beings that have been called Hellborn (this is human language, each species have different languages, customs etc- and a common “language” among demonic generally to communicate with) that could be considered infernal like- the usual fiery notions; large horns, wings, hooved sometimes, coloured thick leathery skin, warriors bloodthirsty, brash etc- in a generalised idea. But these are not related to a Christian hell or anything of the like. They also have no inherent connection to this earths cycles or natural elements. Though some beings may be kind of overseer’s and can acclimate to this idea of being an overseer/god of these energies. Like the elementals such as Lord Leviathan and oceans, King Belial and Earth, Lord Lucifer and Air, Lord Flererous or Lord Azazel as fire for example- but these ORM beings are not limited to just that element etc. There is also only one of each Dark Lord in the ORM with very distinct energies, whereas IRM there can be many of each Dark lord appearing/using the same name.

IRM Goetic demons for example; can be specific to the zodiac or times of the year etc, and that is a kind of core tie to those notions/energies. But for the ORM Demonic Divine They are kind of “acting” or “standing in” for these notions/energies, They do not have the kind of core connection as such. And it goes without saying that ORM Demonic Divine cannot be compelled or controlled by any earthly or IRM god or other beings, since They are beyond that. Also, I use the term majestic to describe Them because They really are, They oversee and contain so much in Their energies, so while such notions like the zodiac etc are not “core” as in tied to the root of Their being, it is can still be part of what They are involved with and oversee. I have also been told that the “Goetia” ORM Demonic Divine ( of the ORM demonic divine that “ride” those currants of those names) volunteered to  be connected to this realm. So in a sense They may be a little more accessible to people. The problem and issue that is apparent right now ( and one of the tasks I have been given being a priestess of this energy) is that the pure demonic divine darkness doesn’t really exits on this realm. So there is like no space for it to “land” in a sense. Which is also why some of the ORM Demonic Divine find the qliphoth to be an easier way to come “in” and interact with this world because it is more suited to Their level of darkness.

How the ORM DLs have described the relationship is this. If the ORM Demonic Divine is the moon, then the earthen “demons” or what humans connect to; is like “the moons reflection on water”. So, it’s also kind of holographic in a way too, almost like an avatar notion. There is also a lot of distortion (energetically and otherwise- it is not pure demonic divine darkness energy) of what humans know to be demons. (and by this I mean what demonic workers, demonolaters and the like call "demonic" (this is not to mention what lay people think of as demons, which we know to be outright incorrect). The ORM Demonic Divine have no connection to djinn and are not Djinn, nor are the demons fallen angels like they are often described in more Christian or monotheistic ideas; i.e. that King Belial is a Fallen angel etc. He is not actually but (because of how the IRM counterpart can be connected to fallen angels), the ORM King Belial, can “appear” to have that energy amongst His other more true energies. Also, how an ORM Demonic Divine appears in the IRM is layered, its kind of like They put on a “cloak” of energy to connect here, but Their core does not change. They also are often too “massive” in a multilayered way to deeply connect. They also “manifest things” in a more kind of overarching way, its not so individually focused. Unless the person is channelling ( and btw the ORM Demonic Divine do not really like possession channelling since it is very uncomfortable for Them given Their vastness and the differing energy levels)  and is directly connected soul wise to ORM, or is soul wise origin from the ORM. That said there are some ORM Demonic Divine DLs who are fallen angels in actuality- Lord Lucifer, King Paimon, Prince Ipos, Duke Crocell to name a few (I am using the names humans refer to them as). Also some DLs  or DL adjacent beings like Lord Abaddon and King Shemyaza are actually abyssal and dark angels and not demonic. Lord Azazel for example is also not a fallen angel but is what has been referred to as a noble demon- which is the same type of demon that King Belial, Lord Mammon and Emperor Satan are. Please bear in mind with these species names; the demonic divine from the ORM do not actually like these terms, but for convenience until I am able to interpret the language to give the species an approximate name that humans can understand- it will have to do. (demonic language is difficult as the human brain and vocal cords can literally not interpret/make the sounds and the language is not just sound but also visual, not to mention each species different dialects and own languages etc.)

Finally, to finish off because I think I have rambled long enough. IRM demons ( that are actual demons, not beings masking as them, or egregores)  tend to be rather connected or at least interested in teaching and guiding humans and on human “evolution” potentially on a more collective level. They tend to be connected more to these IRM planes and like are able to guide humans in a different way. They may be specifically infernal, and are often more connected to other spirits in these realms naturally as well. Their energy vibrations often have a kind of groundedness/earthiness to them. As in their energy core is more aligned with earthen realms. So, for example things like what is generally considered witchcraft- is something that they may have more “knowing” about. If you ask an ORM Demonic Divine to teach you witchcraft; it looks quite different from what IRM witchcraft commonly does. Often also ORM Demonic Divine bring up completely new concepts and ideas (which can then be linked and interpreted through earthen ideas)- not before seen on earthen. Whereas IRM demons can be referring often to already “known about ( by humans even if its new info to the practitioner) ideas. I don’t often connect with this level of being at this vibration, but for me their energy kind of feels zingy and jarring in a way that the pure demonic divine darkness of the ORM demons does not. Also there seems to be a notion among some that (IRM) demons have a “low (slower) vibration” compared to say angelic beings- this is due to how their energy interacts with the human energy body and what kind of energetic places it can be found it. This is not the case for ORM Demonic Divine as it is very high vibrational and pure. The final area to address is vibrationally there is a big vibrational difference in these beings.

𖤐6 panels per page, just to avoid clutter. It will be better in the end, we kow from experience. Text will be bigger and therefore readable, images in panels will be less squished up and therefore look like they actually had effort put into them, stuff like that.

𖤐If you have a written story that you wish for us to turn into a comic, we will charge $10 per page conversion. This is because it takes a LOT of time to read portions of story several times over so we know how to separate the text into pages. This charge will be given even if you decide not to go through with the comic, again, because it takes time away from other works. So make sure that you are certain that you want to do the comic before hand.

I had a teacher in a introductory to film mentioned that in order to enjoy a film- you need to have a “suspension of disbelief” while watching it. Reaction videos of artists on social media- posted & viewed by amateurs to professionals can be fulfilling and/or lucrative to a point. As a fan consuming music or art, you get a deeper appreciation with further knowledge. A YT making the video said he enjoyed various artists’ work but in the process didn’t need to know all the personal details…

But in SM, eventually background info is shared to “understand the context” to appreciate it even more. One poster mentioned higher traffic with content from certain fanbases- so it’s deliberately chosen. Remember TS’s “Blind for love” Gucci hoodie LWYMMD reference “Love is Blind” Eros (aka Cupid) & Psych? (Sad story). Fans react strongly a negative or positive. Flaws can be damaging- “to err is human” which is inevitable-so for a person placed on a higher plane- the fall may be “fatal.”

this is one of my favorite topics because i connect to it and find it very complex - suspension of disbelief is certainly necessary for fiction to a degree. when you're watching a group of characters traverse a magical world, or seeing people burst into song onstage, or reading a tragic romance, and so on!, you have to be able to set aside certain boundaries and logic and immerse in that world being created, which typically has its own rules and design. even when something is ostensibly set in "our" world, with recognizable features and figures and guides, there's still a blurring that happens with fiction. we're meant to suspend that to appreciate the story, and then we apply our own subjective interpretations, emotions, experiences, beliefs, to that. knowing about a writer's background can impact how one looks at a story (in positive and negative ways depending on the circumstance), but death of the author can come into play too, where one chooses to provide a meaning separate to authorial intent or background.

with something like music, this becomes more difficult, particularly when it's highly personal and/or autobiographical/diaristic. CAN you listen to any artist knowing absolutely nothing about them and still enjoy their work? absolutely! and i certainly do! but you aren't ever quite getting a whole picture, or a full expanse of what an artist is conveying. knowing details enhances the breadth of the work, and i do find that i connect more compassionately to artists who speak to me as human beings. "As a fan consuming music or art, you get a deeper appreciation with further knowledge." yes. and then you can ask, is knowing details intrusive? it's impossible to make a definitive decision on this. fans wanting to know about their favorite artists' lives and experiences is as old as art itself, and has always been an aspect of modern pop culture, most assuredly heightened and ingrained with the beginnings of hollywood and the modern music industry. it's why there's always a market for memoirs. there is so much we absorb without even intending to at times. i couldn't begin to trace how i might know a given fact about an artist because it's usually an aspect of me following along with their career - unless you disengage entirely from other media and coverage, the stories are bound to get through, and that in turn influences your perspective on what they've created. this can be very enriching - knowing the paths they've taken, the heartbreaks, the triumphs, certain loves and losses - is connective across the work, but it also makes it inextricable, since once you know...you know. it doesn't preclude us from having personal interpretations as well, these things exist simultaneously, but it does indelibly give us insight into the artists' personal experiences. i don't believe it's wrong or irresponsible to try and empathize with/understand that, or to discuss it, when it helps to humanize and bring forth meaning from the work. it can be done respectfully and using the details and truths we know from the artists themselves. it just requires a certain amount of care.

that said, social media has certainly worsened this and made it more difficult for artists to escape, and that has notable downsides. i don't believe human flaws or mistakes from someone should ever be ruinous (unless it's something actually terrible like abuses, harmful prejudices, etc, but you know what i mean). everyone is going to mess up and stumble eventually, and there's a little too much reveling in mockery sometimes rather than extensions of grace. i also feel like the pedestal is a dangerous thing, and for me personally, it's helpful and grounding to know more about the PERSON, not the idol or the icon, to feel that empathy and recognize that reality, because then the pedestal doesn't matter, it becomes a more genuine expression of connection to their work. while we still keep respectful lines in place, i do believe we can analyze, we can put pieces together, we can follow a journey and the stories being shared, we can discuss the scope of that, and we can find the human heart at the center of things, and it brings illumination and wholeness to the art itself.
