Shhh… Silêncio que Andy Shauf vai tocar | Reportagem Completa
Tumblr media

OKIES Okies are an Aylmer-based folk rock band that just put out a new album named after their hometown. Their previous EP, the wonderful For Now This Is What I Love, introduced fans to their indie-folk-rock sound, and set the stage beautifully for the full length. Give the new album a spin, and check them out at either of one of their album release shows (Wakefield and Montreal) next weekend!

Latest Release: Aylmer (LP, Dec 2017)
Upcoming shows: Friday, January 5 - Blacksheep Inn, Wakefield, QC.$10. 8PM. Saturday, January 6 - Quai Des Brumes, Montreal, QC. $5. 8PM.
SA: How did Okies start as a band? OK: We all knew each other when we were teenagers. Marc and I (Thomas) were in a band together in high school, and Sam was a mutual friend of ours. After we graduated, our high school band fell apart, but we realized we wanted to keep going. So we started writing songs, and we stayed a two-piece for a few months, but we realized we couldn’t really achieve the sound we wanted without a third band member. So we asked Sam if he’d play keyboards for us, and after that we noticed there was definitely a solid chemistry there.
SA: Who are your biggest influences, musically or otherwise? OK: So many different bands. Fleet Foxes, The Districts, Alt-J, Ben Howard, Phoenix, Half Moon Run, Arctic Monkeys, Manchester Orchestra and Andy Shauf are probably our biggest influences.
SA: Thus far in your career, what has been your biggest success? OK: Probably when we played Festival Outaouais Emergents for their 2015 & 2016 editions. We were able to meet a lot of cool people who really helped us push our career further. In the latter year we even got to open for one of our favorite bands; Pandaleon. That was a really humbling experience for us.
SA: On the other hand, what is the biggest challenge you have faced, and how have you dealt with it? OK: We live in different cities now, which makes things a little more difficult, but we’re just as committed to playing together as we’ve ever been. Luckily we have Skype, and Facebook, and an array of technology that make communicating way easier, so it’s not too difficult.
SA: How do you approach the songwriting process? OK: Normally Marc will come to practice with a riff and a melody. Then we’d play around with ideas about it, change things up if they don’t work, and once we’d have a general idea of the structure of the song, I’d start putting together some lyrics.
SA: What are your thoughts on the National Capital Region (and specifically Aylmer!) music scene? OK: I think when people think about music hubs in Canada they often think about Toronto or Montreal, but the Ottawa area has such a great scene too. Bands are so supportive of each other, and there’s so much talent flying around. Aylmer itself is a pretty small town, but it’s full of great musicians. A lot of whom we even went to high school with or knew when we were growing up. Transit Lake, Cherie, Jeremy Audet just to name a few. I strongly suggest you check these people out. Then in Hull you’ve got Outside I’m a Giant. In Gatineau you’ve got Maggie’s March. Everywhere you go in the National Capital Region there’s some band doing great work. It’s an amazing place to play.
SA: What is your favourite track off of your new album Aylmer, and why? OK: A lot of these songs we’ve had for years, so they’re all pretty meaningful to us. If I had to pick one I’d probably say either Cowboys & Indians or Cold Bath. Marc says Smokes & Mirrors is a song he never gets tired of. Sam says Summer Sun.
SA: Lyrically, were the inspirations between your previous release (For Now, This is What I Love) and Aylmer different? Or do you find that you are tackling similar topics and concepts on this release? OK: Definitely a lot of similar concepts. The thing with “Aylmer” is that it’s a culmination of songs we’ve written in the last few years. Obviously feelings and ideas change over that sort of time, so there’s a wide range of topics being discussed. The reason we called it Aylmer though is that all of the songs have a common thread, which is that they were all inspired by our hometown in one way or another. “For Now, This is What I Love” was more of a coming of age EP. Lots of songs dealt with the responsibilities and anxieties associated with becoming adults (we were about 19 at the time).
SA: If you could tour with any band or musician that is currently active, who would it be and why? OK: Any of the bands we mentioned above would be awesome.
SA: Lastly, what’s in store for Okies post release shows, moving forward in 2018? OK: We’re hoping to put together a tour for the summer that we’re really excited about. Other than that, hopefully just writing a lot more songs and playing plenty of shows.

Try Again by Andy Shauf
...because of the radio. It’s mostly the tune stuck in my head, but the lyric that keeps running around is the partial lyric “you’re such a fancy guy.” To my ear it sounds like “you’re such a fancy girl” and I thought that was kind of a motivating thing for me to wake up thinking. Alas.
