Akashi's backstory in the anime and the manga
(Sort of an incomplete comparison pointing out the most recognizable differences. Big Q266/Episode 73 spoilers ahead)
Compared to the manga telling the story by words, the anime portrayed Akashi's childhood life mostly through silent images and focused more on the emotional aspect of the story.
They left out some information that the manga provided. Most of them are minor tidbits, but there is this part:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The anime managed to cram 4 lengthy narration boxes into one single sentence. I somehow hadn't noticed until now, but they actually never told us when and how Akashi's mother died. (The other day I saw someone post a theory of how Shiori could have died and I was like wait what? then opened the anime to check. That's the story)
They also altered the meaning of basketball to Akashi a little:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While in the manga Akashi was said to enjoy the sport itself, in the anime, basketball's value in Akashi's eyes was tied to his mother. Furthermore, his father only allowed him to play if he kept winning. Which kind of doesn't add up with what Masaomi said in an earlier flashback
Tumblr media
and with the fact that Akashi still plays freely after he lost to Seirin in the Winter Cup Tournament.

ok but the way they deliberately added this micro scene, where they're both in tears, that WAS NOT IN THE MANGA???
10000/10 adaptation choice, it was perfect. I needed them to hug and made un in that precise moment, they're both so tired and devastated

Vash’s haircut
in 98’ anime we meet the twins in their childhood with long hair
Tumblr media
It was Rem who styled Vash’s hair into his spiky hairstyle and Knives cut it himself
Tumblr media
In the manga, the first time we see them they already have short hair
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Stampede, they have a very detailed hairstyle
Tumblr media
it looks like someone cut it carefully with scissors
Tumblr media
but when Rem’s gone and Vash grows up, his hair becomes disheveled

and longer

Another color difference:
Kaijou's school uniform in the manga is blue, while it's grey in the anime.

In the anime, William says “it’s my loss, Sherly.” And then immediately cuts Sherlock’s arm so that he will let go of him.
In the manga, before he cuts Sherlock, he says “Live on and atone for my sins, you say? There might have been such a future… but now it seems like fate won’t show me any mercy[*]… That scaffold cannot possibly support this much weight…”
Sherlock tells him “throw away the damn sword… and use both hands to grab mine,” to which he responds “The only one I wish to have return home alive… is you”. And then he cuts Sherlock.
And although it may not seem like it, I think this difference greatly changes the meaning of William’s intended final actions.
In the anime, William forced Sherlock to let go of him to ensure/hasten his own death, getting the final word despite admitting that Sherlock did beat him in the end.
In the manga, William forced Sherlock to let go because he knew that Sherlock wouldn’t let go on his own even if it meant the bridge giving out and them both falling to their deaths. He cut him not because he wanted to die, but because he wanted Sherlock to live.
*I’ve also thought a lot about how this line almost feels like William regretting not being able to live to see the future he set in motion the way Sherlock is trying to persuade him to. As if maybe Sherlock had given him a tiny spark of desire to live on, but he can see that there is no longer a way for Sherlock to pull him back up onto the bridge without their combined weight dooming both of them.

Hairstyles of Shinobu Kochou
Today, I'm discussing hairstyles of Shinobu and Kanae. Throughout the anime, we see two styles of hair for Shinobu. Earlier on, when it shows a younger version of Shinobu (image below), she has short, mostly black hair with slight purple ends, and tied up neatly in the back. The way Shinobu's hair is tied back makes her look stern, and fierce. And the way only two strands hang down in the front make her look angry, and short tempered. Some may say this hairstyle character design is similar to Aoi Kanzaki's, which is also short and stern. Young Shinobu wore her hair like this because she wanted to seem tougher than she physically was. Shinobu was never strong physically, so she had to make herself look tough in order to get by. She made herself look like that, even though she knew that Kanae's looks were enough to help them both get by, and that no one would mess with Himejima-san, who was the size of a bear. As mentioned in the anime and in the manga, Shinobu always had a boiling rage inside her, which is why she was open about her anger to a point in the beginning.
Tumblr media
Later in the story (picture below) after Kanae died and Shinobu moved out of Himejima-san's estate, Shinobu changed her hair. She grew out another strand on each side of the front, and worked on softening her facial expressions. She grew out her hair to look more like Kanae's, because Kanae had two long strands of hair in the front. Kanae also always had soft, kind, expressions, which Shinobu tried to model herself after, after Kanae's death.
Tumblr media
Comparison below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can see a change in her eyebrows, eyes, cheekbones, and hairstyle.
»»————> below is a comparison of how Shinobu's hair would have looked in Kanae's hairstyle<————««

Anime-only adaptations I really enjoyed
I really loved how the anime staff pour their love in the flashback and in the parts where the characters are described the most (bc, in the end, TR is a story driven by characters, not plot), so yeah, kudos for the kokonui, kakuiza and Kisaki centric parts that were not in thee manga and that were added as a ponderate choice by the anime team.
In chronological order
When Takemichi calls him with his nickname "Kaku-chan", Kakucho hesitates before killing him, while in the manga (ch.134) when Izana orders him to kill Takemichi, he just does it with no mercy. The result is the same, but in the anime we saw Kakucho's struggle
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The parts about Koko and Inupi, their past and their fight (2x21 or ep.8 of the 2nd coure of S2). It is a very emotional and crude part also in the manga, but in the anime, thanks to some changes/adaptations/voice acting and music, manages to be even more emotional and impactful, while remaining faithful to the manga. That's how an adaptation should be done
First of all, the kiss
Tumblr media Tumblr media
while, story-wise, it's clear the kiss is not fanservice, but an important moment to understand their past and their complicated relationship, no one can deny the anime kiss looks even more passionate than the manga version
Among the people that approached Koko in the manga for money reasons, only Izana and Taiju were mentioned (ch.159), meanwhile in the manga, besides them, were added also Madarame Shion - an anime only addition-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and the Haitani Brothers, as a nod to Wakui's birthday art for Koko
I already talked about it here and partially here but, in short, I like how the anime underlines even better that Koko considers himself unredeemable and incapable of detach his own identity to make money illegally
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and honestly, peak adaptation: the transition to younger Koko to Tenjiku!Koko saying the same line, to make us understand that Koko still feels incredibly guilty about the past...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
... and the fact both Inupi and Koko cry in this scene, a moment that there wasn't in the manga and that was an incredibly beautiful and touching addition
Tumblr media
but while manga!Koko -ch.159- at this point is just resigned and "colder" in his decision to stay with Tenjiku, just like also manga!Inupi already calmed down, anime!Inupi is both fed up with the situation but willing to makes things right and very determined..
Tumblr media
while anime!Koko is destroyed, he doesn't even stand up when Inupi punches him (I already talked about it here)
Tumblr media
the little addition of Kakucho in the flashback when Shinichiro goes to say hi to Izana to take him out with him. Izana's favourite people "interacting" was nice (too bad the animation quality was a little meh in this episode, but I understand we can't have peak quality all the time)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kakucho with Izana when he finds again Karen by chance and she tells his she's not his biological mother and he's not related to any of the Sano. It the manga Izana was alone, adding Kakucho was nice because the situation is still terrible, Izana sees his whole world collapsing on himself, but at least he has Kakucho
Tumblr media Tumblr media
last one, Kisaki's "I wanted to be like you" that humanizes him a little. In the manga his death was quick and brutal. We can understands, reading the manga, he had this superiority/inferiority complex towards Takemichi, but the anime explains it more clearly (I talked a bit about it here )
Tumblr media
Maybe there's something else that was an anime-only adaptation that made sense, even improved the already existent narration, but I probably don't remember it. These are the ones that imho, are the most important both for the characters and the narration.
I love how Liden Film followed faithfully the story but added "more heart" to it, that's what a good adaptation should do

I have mixed feelings on how Qian Jin was used in s2. Bc on one hand, he was basically a Shakespearean villain which works with his backstory around plays. Probably a reference to Othello with him killing the wife he thought was cheating on him. His whole thing about “you need evidence to base your claims” and him supporting his points or avoiding the police using that logic. And the irony of it all is that he killed his wife based on assumptions with zero evidence. And it’s great from a tragic standpoint for the twins bc their father had done a similar thing. From one abusive coward to the next it’s a constant cycle. The tradeoff is that it makes him much less interesting. After the reveal of his true intentions, it’s like… you’re just a bitch.
Tumblr media
And yeah you can get into his guilt for killing his unborn child as well. But that’s something he brought onto himself and is insistent on denying the truth.
Which to me is just…idk what to tell you bro.
And if he is a Shakespearean villain, Qian Jin should’ve been killed off. Commit to it y’know cuz he’s in jail doing nothing. Even if he breaks out in s3, LTC is gonna kill him and I don’t think even LX can convince him otherwise. Idk what his purpose to the plot would be? Personally, I would’ve liked if they left his story the way it appeared on the surface. As him simply being a victim of circumstance, slowly going insane from it, so he’s trying to save his wife. Because it could tie perfectly to Lu Guang at the last episode.
And you could argue (and be right) that LTC can serve as the LG comparison. But I think Qian Jin would’ve worked better. So I’m in this position where I get why they wrote him that way, it does work for the story, but it takes away the enjoyment of his character for me. And he is treated as the “final boss” in the last ep (before we meet LX). It makes the s2 finale not as climatic as I wanted it to be. This is really my only main complaint about s2 besides some nitpicks.
Overall I loved link click season 2 though. If you prefer season 1 that’s totally understandable and I do think it is a bit better. However if you thought s2 wasn’t a good season at all I think you’re tripping but that’s just me. Kinda glad I wasn’t there in September for the discourse especially around Lu Guang I would’ve fought some bitches. Btw I did make a thread surrounding the lg time-travelling debate here it is: https://www.tumblr.com/briebysabs/745075324591783936/lu-guang-is-a-hypocrite-and-thats-okay-great
