Now that it’s Black History Month, it’s kinda been making me think more about my place as a biracial person in the selfship community. A lot of times, I feel like I’m in a confusing gray area where I’m too black to try and force myself into the nonblack side of the community, but too white to actively engage with the niche of black selfshippers.

It’s kind of an open secret that the selfship community can be at best, hostile and unwelcoming to black selfshippers. It’d be unfair to generalize the entire community as a bunch of hateful racist bigots due to a few bad apples, but that doesn’t make it any less of a problem. Racism and cliquey behavior are problems that plague every online community, true, but I feel like with selfship spaces it’s a lot more obvious. While I, fortunately haven’t been victim to racially-motivated harassment (yet), I feel like I get an easy pass because I’m “not really black” or something like that. Doesn’t stop me from being a bit cautious every now and again, though.

To some extent, I know I should probably feel more grateful I haven’t experienced as much adversity as other black selfshippers, much less selfshippers of color in general. But I feel like my easier time in the community as a black person is because of pure luck, not because I actually earned it. Even if the community is making slow (emphasis on “slow” here, let’s be honest) and steady progress to be more inclusive, I can’t help but feel like an outsider, in both black and nonblack spaces in the community.

I want to make it clear I’m not trying to speak on behalf of every single biracial or black selfshipper in the community. Some might have differing opinions to mine, and it’s totally fine to agree to disagree. I just figured I’d toss my thoughts on the matter out there, y’know? Feel free to chip in

announcement: after hearing some people’s concerns, i’ve decided to get rid of the due date!!! still. i’ve decided i still want to reward those who post their entry before the 21st. so i’ll keep an eye out for that!!

okay… i sat on this idea for a while now… but i guess it’s about time i officially start it..

as some of you know, i’ve been redrawing my first ever ishimondo art every year for the past two years. i like to do it because it marks another year of me being in the dangan fandom while also seeing how my art has changed and improved over time.

i wanted to do something special this year, and the couple times i’ve mentioned this, i had some people respond very positively. so here we go.

i’ve just always loved doing things that spark interaction and participation among the ishimondoblr community, and this annual redraw really set that in stone for me. so i thought i’d take it a step further and give you all the opportunity to see how your artistic lenses apply to this artwork.

da rules:

- there are no requirements to participate. this is open to anyone and everyone.

- you can change the original composition if you want, just keep mondo and kiyotaka as the main focus.

- you can always tag me if you post your submission, but i’d also prefer if people used “#nitepuffdtiys2024” to help me find it as well. please at least do one or the other so that i can find your art.

- if you prefer to, you can dm me your entry, but it’s not required by any means.

Throughout my life, be it by peers, strangers, or loved ones, I’ve often been told that I can’t be aromantic or asexual; that people are sexual by nature and so I was wrong in my identity. For a while, I believed them, even dating around a bit… but every relationship felt nothing but performative, silly even. Even when trying to fit into what everyone said was “the right way”, I just knew it was wrong; that wasn’t me. Deep down, to my most natural state of being, void of outside influences and the “you should be”s, I am Grace Toledo, I am Aroace, and I am proud.

I made this artwork for The Brooklyn YAS (Youth Against Substance Misuse) ‘s annual youth art competition! The theme this year is “I AM BECASUE WE ARE”.

This was painted/drawn onto an old road sign, and materials used were acrylic paint, ohuhu markers, micron pens, sharpie, and paint pen.
