I do think anthropomorphism, if not taken too far, has it's place in conversations around animal welfare, conservation etc. Sometimes it can help the general public to connect with and care about certain animals if they can see them as individuals with distinct personalities.
Sometimes I feel like the push against animal rights rhetoric can go too far the other way. Animals are all unique individuals with their own distinct personalities. Anyone whose had a pet knows that, and wild animals are no different. It's a tricky line to toe when it comes to wildlife, though, as there's a lot of complex issues involving wildlife. Just because a wild animal (like a fox) is an individual doesn't mean they should necessarily have the same rights and protection as people or even our pets. Conservation of species and habitats has to take priority over the individual.
Idk where I'm really going with this as it's such a complex topic, but I do think there needs to be a balance between not all anthropomorphism is bad and animals shouldn't be seen as little furry people. Finding that balance and making people understand the nuances of these issues is the hard part!

I love it when people try to project relatable motives onto animals and completely miss the fact that the actual motive is even more relatable than whatever they've come up with. They're like "oh, the mommy cat is showing me her kittens because she's proud!" no, the mommy cat is showing you her kittens because the little bastards are driving her crazy and it's your turn to babysit.

What then is truth? A movable host of metaphors, metonymies, and anthropomorphisms: in short, a sum of human relations which have been poetically and rhetorically intensified, transferred, and embellished, and which, after long usage, seem to a people to be fixed, canonical, and binding.

I remain baffled and disturbed by the sheer number of people who genuinely believe a zoo animal can survive, let alone thrive, in the wild. Animals that are bred for reintroduction programs are handled completely differently than general collection animals, and even with all that preparation, many will not make it. To think a random animal in a zoo can be set loose and do just fine is more ignorant than I can comprehend.
"Freedom" is a human concept. And projecting your very human desire for freedom onto animals is one of the most gross froms of anthropomorphism.
