“Col. Warden Recalls Hindu 'Invasion’,” Border Cities Star. February 16, 1933. Page 5.  ---- Addresses Lions; Plan To Make Jobs Is Advanced ---- THE Koma Gato Maru incident in Vancouver in 1914 was related by Colonel John W. Warden, O.B.E., D S O., at last night's meeting of the Windsor Lions Club, held in the Norton-Palmer Hotel. The other features of the program were Edward Harding's plan for the relief of unemployment and the announcement that Dr. H. Irvine Wiley was chosen as the new district governor of Lions.
'"When war is in the offing," declared Colonel Warden, "nations who are anxious to go to war show it by their plans. Previous to the world war Germany planned against England. They sent 300 strikers out to the coal mines in British Columbia to bring on a strike a year before the war. This was done so that no coal would be available for the navy or commercial purposes.
"I was stationed there just one year then and it presented a delicate situation. We rounded up 100 men but we could not find the ringleaders. To find them we said that we were going out of town and we left town but waited just outside of the town. As soon as we had left 1,500 men gathered in one place and we were notified immediately. We came back to town and captured the ringleaders and had them brought up for trial. This was done in spite of considerable disturbance from the women folks.
Wishing to cause trouble within the British Empire Germany collected 350 Hindu deserters of the Indian Army, took them to Shanghai and sent them to Canada. British naval authorities were watching their movements and notified us in Vancouver. We were told to handle the situation with diplomacy and to avoid trouble.
'Canadian officials told us not to allow them to land by any means. When the boat, the Koma Gato Maru, pulled into the harbor took 20 sea-going launches and a tug out to meet it. The man in charge of immigration was not familiar with East Indians and lost their respect by going to them first. A man who was then a member of Parliament and is now a cabinet minister made the same mistake.
"They often promised to go back peaceably but their promises were only tricks to get supplies. '"Immigration officials sent 200 policemen out at midnight to surprise the Indians but they were waiting and drove the police away by throwing missiles of every kind down at them in the smaller boat. I was struck in the back with a large lump of coal and then they cut the grappling ropes.
'"Finally I went out to their ship and told them that if they did not leave by five o'clock we would bring a warship out and make them leave. The warship came alongside with men marching on deck and at two minutes to five they cast anchor and moved out the harbor under our escort. As we left them they took off their sandals and threw, them at us and spit at us.
"When they got back to India they started a riot and two-thirds of them were killed and the rest captured. Then the war started and I left but shortly afterwards our interpreter who had been threatened with myself was shot while in the courtroom.
"This is just an example." concluded Colonel Warden, "of how other nations seek to make trouble for Great Britain when they are planning a war."
A plan for the relief of unemployment was submitted by Mr. Harding and a committee was appointed to present it to the Border Chamber of Commerce. The plan has been tried and found sound in Rochester, New York, and now other cities are undertaking it. It calls for a canvass of all citizens and obtaining their pledges to spend whatever amount they can in the next three months on improving homes, factories, stores, buildings and grounds and for the purchase of new articles. In Rochester and Monroe County the residents pledged themselves to spend $6.026.351.95 during the next three months. The plan is designed to prevent hoarding of money and to create employment.
[AL: A remarkable display of the racist, classist, conspiracy theorizing of the Canadian military and political elite, especially the ‘small fry’ of this class - local administrators, politicians, police, prison, military and capitalists, the powerful on a municipal or rural level, who can only understand events in their time as the acts of agitators and foreign enemies. It’s clearly a post-facto argument, too, sort of like The Simpsons’ Moe claiming ‘even when I knew it was the bears, I knew it was them [the immigrants].’ People like Warden opposed to Sikh immigration or strikers didn’t hide behind ‘imperial Germany did it’ at the time - they just argued that White Canada had to keep out the wrong colour and punish the labour agitator. The implication here, too, is that the unrest of the Great Depression was being caused by the Soviet Union.]

Election Deniers Fuel Anti-Immigrant Sentiment into Activism Surge
As we face the complexities of modern democracy, it’s evident that the coalition formed by anti-immigrant election deniers is more than an isolated political phenomenon—it’s a movement shifting the landscape of US voting rights. This blog examines the historical context, key players, their strategies, and the potential repercussions on American democracy. A Coalition Built on Election…

it wasn't enough that arizona's japanese internment camps were placed on gila river indian community and colorado river indian tribes' land as "reservations within reservations" (and against the desires of GRIC.) now i get to learn that chinese and japanese immigrants evaded the chinese exclusion act by traveling first to mexico and then to the u.s., entering through o'odham land, through the late 1800s own flavor of "prevention through deterrence," while the u.s. used what is by all rights a diverse and abundant desert to kill them, just as they do latine migrants today. and now i feel like i have to tell everyone i know about this because nobody told me. our fates as illegal immigrants are so tightly bound up i want to scream.

COMPACFLT, ma’am, you’ve absolutely wrecked me with: “My father—my father was kind”. I can’t even tell you exactly why, but that just struck right in the chest with the force of a sledgehammer, gosh. If it’s alright with you, could you please share your headcanons about Ice and Mav’s fathers? I know I’m, like, quoting your own work back to you but I can’t help it: “Well, dead pilot dads, that’s one thing we have in common.” —But do they? Or is one dead pilot dad vastly different from the other?
ice’s dad (Thomas kazansky sr.): asshole army major OH-6 and UH-1 pilot who got shot down over Vietnam in 1967. son of far-eastern-european immigrants. anti-commie. wanted ice to ALSO be a chopper pilot in the army, so ice went navy instead. daredevil dipshit who died & left ice’s mom alone with two young kids & whose death encouraged ice away from breaking the rules or being unsafe (esp. in the air). not necessarily a great person or a great father but died when ice was 8 so also not a huge influence on his life (i know val kilmer has said ice’s father was a big influence… I’ve written elsewhere about why i personally shifted ice’s narrative away from daddy issues and more towards Navy authority in general issues, in light of ice’s character and rank in tgm. GOD i need a master post sorry, but i think you can find it if you search “edts notes” on my blog and scroll for a while). ice’s LACK of a father -> no man to model himself on -> overcompensating & not getting it exactly right (doesn’t know how to talk to other men) -> maverick immediately clocks him as gay -> the plot of my fic.
Maverick’s dad (peter “duke” mitchell sr.): a genuinely awesome person. funny & kind, warm & loving, a truly good father & a great fighter pilot. big american patriot. Comes from a long long line of us navy personnel—maverick has the navy family name & the pedigree ice, as a second generation american, does not. Im still not sure who raised maverick—it’s one of those things I don’t have a strong opinion on, so it could go either way (i posited in the airplane one-shot that he was raised by relatives, aunt & uncle, but I know it’s a popular hc here that he was a foster kid—all equally plausible to me) but I do think he grew up exceedingly bitter, hearing about how great his dad was and how there was just no way! his dad could’ve failed the Navy the way he supposedly did, because he was just such a good person… there’s a real bitterness about original maverick that TGM maverick kind of lost. His bitterness only shows during the “it’s not the plane it’s the pilot” “EXACTLY” exchange (incidentally the scene that gave me the idea that Bradley thinks mav pulled his papers bc he’s openly gay…it’s the pilot not the plane, ouch). but i still think maverick is like deeply deeply bitter about how the navy handled his fathers death, which is what the excerpt i posted on wednesday is actually about—he confesses to ice how disillusioned he has been with the navy as an institution since he found out the truth about his father’s heroism. I know i just just just said that Maverick’s patriotic conservatism is his reason for existence in the meta “why we make mil propaganda movies” sense, and i stand by that, but i think on a human character level there probably has to be a little bit of deep-seated resentment towards the Navy for smearing his father’s good name and his own good name in the process. My maverick grew up a good Christian kid, called himself peter jr. after his good guy father, who never broke ANY rules until he was radicalized by not getting into the academy (“punish the son for the sins of his father”) and basically lost his mind for 30+ years. “If my family name automatically makes me a sinner in the navy’s eyes, then I might as well sin anyway.”

also way too many posts are trying to summarise this as solely islamaphobia or white supremacy and YES those are both very very important factors but it's all immigrants and minorities who are being attacked it's a general xenophobia and misinformed right wing hysteria that's fuelling this violence. to imply there's set, organised political groups or goals isn't true. It's a horrible concoction of stoked up culture war bigotry that alienates multiple identities and poc under the generic banner of 'otherness'. That's why the identity of the attacker never really mattered to these people. the right wing media and parties in this country have been selling the white working class lies about why their lives are hard while scapegoat any minority group. if you ask these people they have very little idea about the actual demographics of 'the boat people' are assume they are all muslim or brown or terrorists while simultaneously attacking all minorities in random (but targeted) incidents. We should condemn and study the interaction of these prejudices but I think it's wrong to try and categorise this unrest as nazism or any particular political stance when it's just ignorant and unfocused hatred and opportunistic violence stoked up by elites.

I know the dni poll is a joke basically but this is such a poor and limited definition of islamophobia that it’s almost offensive. for one thing you’ve just called a decent amount of muslim women islamophobes

I remember once somebody got on my ass about speaking about racism and neo-nazis in fandom spaces and went all:
"Well what's the lesser of two evils? A lot of good fans leaving or a few neo-nazis and racists here and there?"

I think you can have your early-seventeenth-century devout English Protestant heroine legit think Catholics are bad news for at least a part of your novel. Not only would she almost certainly believe that, but also I'd like to think that most readers could handle that level of imperfection.

“CURB ON ALIEN ENTRY INTO WEST SUGGESTED,” Montreal Star. October 24, 1932. Page 2.  ---- Father Casgrain Urges Check on Communists ---- QUEBEC, Oct. 24— (Star Special)— Creation of a Canadian feeling in the West of the Dominion, restriction of alien entry into that section of the country, and adoption of a different immigration policy, were urged by Rev. Wither Casgrain Roman Catholic port chaplain of Quebec in addressing the Quebec City section of the Catholic Women's League on "Canada and Communists."
He declared that Canada, like other nations was faced with the Soviet menace and had to wage continuous warfare in order to eradicate it.
“The majority of Communists in Canada are immigrants. I have repeatedly protested against the policy of excessive immigration and have claimed that we should be governed by quality and not quantity. The large number of deportations during the past few year has shown that assimilation of foreigners is not easy when they arrive in large numbers.”

at the barber shop at least 2 of them are conservative gays and it makes sense cause they're Gen X probably or older and did not grow up with the kind of support that's around now (in my city at least) like they are able to be publicly gay and date whoever they want but can't let go of internalized misogyny and homophobia because of their families and what it was like in school growing up

#went out on the town tonight to the so-called sketchiest area (i find it delightful)#met some friends at a café and then we strolled for a while#ended up at a cute french bar and drank orange wine#then headed to a famous noodle place and bumped into some other people they knew who joined us#the five of us ate noodles and i had an intense conversation with a mexican woman#we were discussing the way the complaint about 'immigrants not learning the language' can be understood two ways#as an american i'm very sensitive to that phrase because i'm accustomed to it being used as a subtle indicator of anti-immigrant sentiment#and here in germany it's unfortunately often used that way too so i always look closely at anyone who says that#but she pointed out that in mexico you kind of just do have to learn spanish if you want to live there successfully#so when she hears germans saying 'immigrants should learn german' she just thinks 'well yeah of course we should'#and i said yeah fair point#i think two important distinctions are 1) why did the immigrants in question come to a different country#and 2) how do we treat them when they don't learn their new country's language very rapidly#because i may be a hypocrite but i'll be honest:#i feel very differently toward a rich white american who comes to berlin 'because it's just so cool'#and doesn't put much effort into learning german 'because everyone speaks english anyway'#than i do towards a refugee who comes here fleeing death and already speaks e.g. both arabic and english#i'm inclined to give the latter a lot more leeway#sure they should do their best to learn german soon if they're planning to stay here for good#but i personally refuse to judge them in the slightest if they take a little while to make that happen#cosmo gyres#personal#language#immigration
