SciArt September 6: Understory
A Scaled Antpitta stands and surveys its surroundings on the forest floor.
Just a quick little painting of what ebird describes as "a plump ball on sticks"! Perfect bird.

March 2, 2023 - Hooded Antpitta (Grallaricula cucullata)
Found in a spotty range in parts of Colombia and extreme western Venezuela, these antpittas live in the undergrowth of mountain forests. While their diet has not been studied in detail, they probably feed on small invertebrates, foraging near the ground. They may rarely join flocks with other species. Little is known about their breeding habits, though they might nest between May and September. Classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN, their population is though to be declining in their small, scattered range due to habitat loss, which may be likely to increase in the near future.

BOTD: Scaled Antpitta
Photo: Cheryl Rosenfeld
"A plump ball on sticks. Uncommon and elusive on forest floor in humid evergreen forest of tropical lowlands and foothills; also in humid pine-oak and fir forest of mountains in central Mexico. Moves quickly and stealthily on long legs. May be seen feeding or hopping along quiet trails and roads. Flushes with a whir of wings without calling."
