I have a question about darkness exists to make light truly count. How come the fanfic I locked to ao3 users only?
ah yeah, that was a recent change because there was evidence that popular AI bots were scanning writing share sites like A03 in order to get better at fake writing. i don’t want my writing, that i spend a lot of time and energy on, to be used by AI to spit out automated responses to prompts. so i locked all my A03 fics to be user only (hopefully preventing any bots from having access, though i’m sure that’s not 100% foolproof).
i’m not sure what the current situation is, i’ve heard the A03 legal team was aware of the problem and working on a solution but until i know for sure, i’d rather be safe than sorry. i do apologize for the inconvenience, i’m not happy about it either (traffic and comments on my A03 took a sharp dive as expected) but it’s gonna stay that way until i know for sure my writing won’t be stolen by AI. god help us if AI starts farming from tumblr (luckily our reputation isn’t that of a writing site).

Santa’s Wonderland
Merry Christmas, @shelling4869ford! I am  your @dcmksecretsanta Secret Santa
Here is your fanfic, but I also have some art I will be sending you later this week after I add some color to it! You said you wanted some Conan and Kogoro bonding  - I hope this is ok!
Kogoro shifted from one foot to the other so many times Conan briefly wondered if the old man needed to go to the bathroom. But a quick glance at his hands and the way they were fidgeting showed that Kogoro just desperately wanted a cigarette. It wasn't like you could smoke in Santa's Wonder Land.
Kogoro had been flattered into taking the kids by Ayumi and the other actual kids laying it on kind of thick, in Conan's opinion. A lot of 'but you're the best detective' and 'we'd be so safe with you' until Kogoro had laughed, patted them all on the head and readily agreed. After all, Ran was working here.
Which was why Conan had agreed to come along. Of course, since he still looked like a child no one thought it was suspect that he wanted to see Santa.
“So,” Ai asked, “What exactly will you be asking Santa for?”
He frowned at her. “You know damn well he isn't real and that he couldn't give me what I want even if he was.”
“Sorry. I think I'll just ask for a new purse.”
“Well, glad to see you're setting your sights low, anyway...”
“Are you talking about what you're going to ask for?” Ayumi asked, grabbing Ai's hand and starting to swing it back and forth. “I want some new dolls, and a detective kit and...”
“I want some books,” Mitsuhiko offered.
“Yeah, yeah. Just save it for Santa, kids.” Kogoro brushed them off. “Damn it, is the line always like this? I haven't been to one of these things in ages,” he started rubbing at his neck as though he could feel the years weighing down on him. “And that little brat got Ran into trouble again that day.”
I didn't get her into trouble. That time was her idea. I wouldn't have tried to pass the gifts out to the other kids in line. I knew the boxes were empty, Conan thought, but obviously couldn't say.
“Oh, look, there's Santa!” Ayumi pointed, standing on her tiptoes to try to see over the crowd. Genta grabbed her under the armpits and hoisted her up so she could see better. “Thank you!”
“Sure, but now Conan probably can't see anything,” Genta smirked at him. “Can ya, shorty?”
“Did you want to see anything?” Kogoro asked. “Didn't think this would be your kind of thing.”
“It's not.” Which was the truth. But he was very curious about Ran's elf costume. Before he could say anything for or against it, Kogoro had scooped him up and put him on his shoulders.
“There. Can you see him now, kid?”
“Yeah. Uhm. ...Thanks.”
“No problem. Sooner we get out of here the sooner I can have a cigarette.” Kogoro marched forward in the line but kept Conan on his shoulders.
It felt like hours before they reached the front but in actuality was probably more like twenty minutes. Conan noticed that the Detective Boys were all starting to look kind of tired and crabby. If they'd had to wait much longer it wouldn't have been a pretty sight.
“Ho ho ho, all of you kids at once?” Santa asked.
“You can all come one at a time or all together,” Ran was at the front, apparently on kid wrangling duty. She wore a green skirt with a red blouse and then a green and red hat with elf ears on it. Conan smiled at her – she looked adorable.
“C'mon, kids, other people are waiting.” He was more than a little surprised to see Sonoko there. She didn't need to work, so why? Oh, wait. Now he remembered. She'd been insisting to Makoto lately that she could make her own way in the world. This must be her latest attempt to prove it.
“One at a time,” Ai suggested. When Mistuhiko and Genta started to take off running she grabbed them both by the shirts. “Ayumi first.”
They both grumbled, but agreed to it.
Kogoro watched and tapped his foot, repeatedly checking his cell phone for the time. “Couldn't they have given you a longer skirt?” he asked Ran after a moment. “It's cold at the North Pole. Elves should be wearing parkas and long pants.”
“It's just the costume, dad,” Ran sighed, “Besides, some of my regular skirts are shorter than this. It's about the same length as my school uniform skirt.”
He brushed the answer off without paying attention to it. Ayumi finished her list and then the boys took their turns. Then Ai.
“Your turn, Conan!” Ran insisted, grabbing his hand and leading him to Santa. Santa, for his part, was staring after Ai with a bewildered expression.
“That girl....” He started.
“Yeah, she has that effect on people,” Conan muttered.
“Yes, but what can I get you for Christmas, little boy?”
“Uh...books, I guess.”
“Just books? No toys?”
“No...”
“You know,” Santa had a strange twinkle in his eye, “I heard they have a new play set out for Sherlock Holmes.”
Conan blinked a few times, then finally bothered to look at Santa. “Oh, hi, Inspector Megure!”
“Shhh!” The Inspector double checked that his beard hadn't slipped.
“Oh, hey, Inspector Megure!” Kogoro shouted at him. “How are things going?”
“Oh geez, get that guy out of here before he lets these kids know who I am – or worse, we fall into a case. I don't want these kids seeing a dead body,” the Inspector let Conan off of his lap. “Get out of here, Kogoro!”
“Is the police force paying that little these days?”
“Shut up and leave,” Megure hissed. “Kids all got their wishes in, do you want them to worry that Santa isn't going to bring their toys?”
“I guess not,” Kogoro admitted. “See you around, Inspector.”
Conan barely resisted the urge to face palm, but followed along on Kogoro's heels. “I tell you, kid, this stuff gets worse every year.” As soon as they were far enough away Kogoro lit a cigarette and took a long drag. “It used to be kind of fun when Ran was little. She'd get so excited and her mom..and her mom,” he trailed off and took another drag, letting the smoke out slowly as he thought. “But that was a long time ago. Things change.”
“Well,” Conan thought about it for a moment. “Maybe we could make things nice for Ran this year. Maybe make those cookies her mom used to, only ours will actually be edible.”
“Who told you about those?” Kogoro asked sharply.
“Ran did!” Conan said automatically. “That Eri couldn't cook but always tried to make spritz cookies anyway at Christmas time.”
“Yeah. Terrible. You'd think the sprinkles could save em but nope, just made it more obvious that she'd messed up.. That's not a bad idea, though. Do you know what goes into those things?”
“No,” Conan admitted, pulling out his cell phone and typing away. “But I found a recipe. We have everything except almond extract at home.”
“All right. Well, let's get your friends dropped off and then I guess... I guess we'll go home and make cookies. But you're doing all the clean up.”
Conan smirked at him. “Okay, but I get the first cookie. Then you've got yourself a deal, mister!”

Read O Human Star. Nifty art and some very cool premises at first, but seems to me to fall pretty flat ultimately.
Major spoiler warnings in the following obviously:
The comic sets up an extensively futuristic world with mind uploading, fully robotic citizens with human-level AI, new revolutionary prosthetics, the first few human-like robotic bodies, etc… and then uses it just as a backdrop for some fairly predictable GBTQ drama. The basic problem I would diagnose is that the comic treats transhumanism as basically not real; just as a literary fantasy trope that can be fielded as an analogy to transsexuality which is recognized as an issue with real weight.
What is transsexuality* to even mean though when you’re a cyborg with in principle unlimited morphological freedom? Especially when the comic seems too squeamish to establish if the cyborgs even have things like genitalia or any analogue of hormones. It’s not as if this requires adding nudity; it would have been easy to write a possibly abortive sex scene between Brendan and Neo-Al. In the end Neo-Al does not even end up changing her body shape much (not sartorial style either for that matter). Are we supposed to gather that the bashfully commissioned hairstyle is the most major aspect of her transitioning?!
(* Before you ask, yes, I’m using this term explicitly to distinguish physical transitioning from social, on which see below.)
For that matter there would have been easily some room to explore non-gender-related bodily dysphoria within the existing main characters. We establish that robots do not need to poop as long as they stick to consuming mostly fructose (seems like a rather random pick of carb to me, but whatever). OK, so presumably they produce CO₂ exhaust and perhaps even dump any waste water primarily via evaporation instead of needing to pee. Now Sulla visibly does not enjoy trying to consume some soup with her friends; and ends up dumping some via … tear ducts? Of course she’s worried about this affecting her passing for a human. But what happens to the proteins etc. she has now ingested? Does she end up having to basically vomit this out later or to excrete it the human way? Does not having gut flora create any problems in this, e.g. in needing to process the matter fast before it begins to rot? Seems potentially pretty disturbing to me. Neo-Al, who has clear memories of eating and digesting regular human food, might have had an interesting time with this too.
It moreover feels like the gender identity angle of transitioning is not explored that much either beyond the most superficial level of changing one’s name and pronouns. These are indeed stressed in importance with the side character of Mx. Ty/Titus (who meanwhile seems to pay remarkably little attention to the implications of what is physically happening with the Sterlings). We are not privy to Sulla’s “thoughts a boy cannot have” either (kind of implied though to have something related to watching magical girl animes as bedtime stories) nor does she really do anything later on that’s conspicuously feminine (is she even interested in hanging out with the group of girls specifically or just with Ty?). The comic also goes to some length to establish Brendan’s identity as a gay man and his pain at Al choosing to keep their relatioship in the closet; it does nothing whatsoever, not even an epilogic hint, to explore how or if this changes after Neo-Al no longer identifies as a man. Lucille’s company seemingly only hiring women is also suspiciously clearly established in the comic, but not whether this creates a space or sense of camaredarie that Al Prime felt left out of (not any more so at least than how he was left out from a lot of social interaction due to his general reclusiveness).
The single most striking transition in the comic is for me instead Sulla’s early change from what’s effectively a worker robot to a child. This, too, is unfortunately passed by relatively fast despite the major shifts this must imply in self-image, perhaps the level of consciousness even. Or for that matter in how Brendan views her. Does he even see early Sulla as a person all the way or just as the memorabilia of one? When and how does the further decision to shape her into a prepubescent child develop? He obviously lets go of the hope of having preserved Al Prime at some point (otherwise he’d be aiming for building one of the adult Al bodies from the start, wouldn’t he) but this shift also zooms by unremarked. There might have been something similar interesting going on with Tsade, too, who’s surely the character with the lowest personal development to plot revelance ratio; they’re left as a pure deus ex machine as it is (in more than one sense too). Even their rise from a singular unemployed robot to someone with substantial resources remains entirely out of the view.
It’s also curious how we briefly hear of Tsade’s rise to a legal person but not much of a hint on where Sulla is on the curve. Is she too much under Brendan’s thumb to act on it? Too scared of no longer being able to pass as human in all situations if she were to be a Registered Synthetic? Or are we supposed to infer the process is just too trivial by the present day to be remarked on? If yes, there would be quite the possibility of “Nobby discourse” on Gimel, too. — Also as long as I’m on the worldbuilding, where has the robot underclass we see on the streets emerged from? Are these all supposed to be robots that were created for menial work, proved sentient and then similarly escaped from their workplaces (without too much resistance)? Or do robots, too, procreate? Sulla kind of does, but lol no, it’s not as if her position as Neo-Al’s de facto parent is acknowledged by the narrative, let alone by anyone in-universe.
Anyway what I take from this comic is that it quite convincingly asks the questions “what does it mean to be human / a person”, backpedals to “oh that’s less important than what it means to be a wo/man” and in the end doesn’t even have anything nontrivial to say on the latter either. Same aftertaste as that genre of glib tumblr posts to the effect “no don’t explore the question if the notion of gender even applies to robots, we only want robots who proudly identify as definitely girls”.

FIR 98: One Insight Away!!
What if the problems facing your business could be solved with ONE INSIGHT? What would you do to gain the Insight You Needed to move your business forward? If the INSIGHT YOU GAINED required you to make changes to your business...would you do it?
Hey, welcome everybody to another episode of ClickAI Radio. My name is Grant Larsen. Alright, so today we are talking about insights one insight away. So there's many of you know, Russell Brunson, he uses this phrase a lot called one funnel away. I'm sure a lot of us have heard that. And what I like about that idea is that it keeps us moving forward, right? It's this notion that, alright, I've got a problem I'm trying to solve. And what I'm really looking for is just that next funnel, right, that next opportunity, and that could be the tipping point that helps me solve some problem and grow the business.
Well, it's similar in terms of AI. So with AI, it's one insight away, how many insights will it take for us to actually solve a problem for our business? So to do that, I started looking at the notion of insights. And where when did insights come about? And how did people start even talking about insights? I found one place right here is kind of an interesting, there's a book actually on Amazon. It's called inside out kind of kind of clicky. Inside Out, get ideas out of your head and into the world. And the author is Tina Seelig. She's a unit at Stanford University professor, and she discusses how to take her ingenious course I think I'm saying the name right. And to make imaginative ideas, reality.
Interesting, right. Okay. And here's another one. This one's actually called inside out. The words are combined, it's a website insightoutshow.com. And, and it's actually a pretty interesting set of podcasts. They're they're dedicated to bringing insights or exposing insights that have changed people's lives. And so it's got some best selling entrepreneurs and authors and thought leaders that are on there. So that was kind of interesting.
I also looked into some examples of people that that found insights, and then they applied them. Here's one that was particularly interesting. This was on medium.com. It says guy that when was this anyway, this was about a year ago or so. This guy, he pulled an 18 ton truck at some state titles. And he's trying to this is an a sportsman or strongman competition, right? And he's pretty, pretty small guy. And he's pulling a truck that's 200 times heavier than him. And he ended up placing fourth, and he beat a ton of people that were much larger and much stronger. And, and he goes on to describe I love what he says here. He says, how's it even possible? How is it possible that a guy that's 10 to 50 kilograms heavier than me?
They couldn't get the truck as far as I did. And he points out, it all came down to a single insight. Being in one of the lightest weight divisions, I didn't have the luxury of watching a whole bunch of people go before me to figure out the best way to do it. I had only two chances. So for the competitors went before me, I got up right beside them in front of them at an angle, I got an every position I could watch how they did it any any point for advantage others might miss. And then he says I found it. This is a cool part. Okay, he he finds the insight. And of course, if we get meta here for a moment, he really introspect it right? He watched others, he saw what was going on, he looked at what information was available to him.
Hint, Hint, nudge, nudge, and then he goes on, he says, I found it.
And he's got some video on this. Anyway, he says, you'll notice in the video, not long after I start pulling, there's a point where I stop at the pedestrian crossing, and really leaning hard. No one else did that. They tried to pull slow and steady the whole time. They did that because that's the way you usually do. Trump poll. Then he goes on to say, but they did it because they didn't see what I saw. So here's the insight. He said just after the start, there was a small divot in the road in perceptible unless you saw it from the side, and we're really paying attention. So he ended up what happened is the people that were just going sort of slow and steady, the truck would get into that divot. And they couldn't pull through, they didn't have the momentum.
He However, when he came up to that point, let the truck come into the divot, and knew to let it sort of roll back a little, then he leaned in super hard, and pulled it out of that divot and ended up taking for what a What a cool insight, right, he studied the situation, look at the information that was available to him. So back in 1936, in the one of the co founders of the London School of Economics, published a book called The Art of thought, I think his name is Graham Wallace, and called the art of thought. And he outlined four stages in the creative process.
Okay, so it was Wallace's stages of control where when you're going to get insight, there's some preparation, then there's some incubation illumination, and then verification, right? So so in this guy's example, where he's got the truck, right, and he's doing some preparation, right, he's watching the people. So that's the preparation is seeing how they get through it. And then he incubates and ultimately enough to the point where he can discover this debit. And then the illumination comes about, and he's able to leverage it. So what if we did that with our business? Right? What if we took the four steps preparation, incubation illumination and verification? What if I said, with artificial intelligence, that's how we get insights for our business. So the preparation stage is obviously doing transactions in my business. And there's a point where I need to prepare and curate that information. And then I need to think about what problems Am I trying to solve, like, in the case of this truck guy, right? That's pulling it. His problem, of course, was how do I beat everyone else, when he didn't really know at the time, is that his real problem was not, how do I beat everyone? It was, how do I get through that divot. And so in the course of incubation, he sees this and then some illumination comes on how he can actually use the debit to his advantage, and then pull on through to it.
So we use artificial intelligence to do the same thing. We go through our preparation, we incubate we think about what problem we are trying to solve. And in the course of doing it, we actually get some illumination on Wait a minute, maybe the problem I'm solving isn't the one I originally thought there. There's another problem here. And that's illuminating me into in terms of what I need to go solve. So that led me to this interesting point here, I looked something up. And it was, what's the difference between insight and intuition? And it turns out that one of the definitions that I saw was that, hey, intuition is the use of patterns that you've already learned. Whereas insight is the discovery of new patterns. And so in the case of this guy pull in this truck, right? So he's got some intuition on things that he can do, to perhaps use his body and align it properly to pull the truck through, but what he really needed. And what he ultimately discovered was an insight, a new pattern, which was, how do I actually deal with the real problem at hand, which is this divot that's got me stuck. Alright. So insight, that turns out is being able to see something right clearly that what's times we didn't know even existed beforehand.
And that often includes having an understanding of the cause and the effect relationships, meaning if I, if I do something, then something else will happen. Sometimes we call it an epiphany or an aha moment, you know, I've applied AI to multiple organizations, there's typically this epiphany, or this insight moment, right, which is, oh, gotcha. Now that I look at what the AI is telling me about my sales transactions. I didn't realize that, you know, when it's Tuesday in Belgium that I shouldn't be selling or whatever it is, right? So these insights come and then you start to realize, wait, I've got to go solve some of these specific problems. I thought it was solving a bigger problem. But before I can, metaphorically move my truck further down. I've got to get through the divot and AI brings those insights. So the real question is, how can I reduce the time to getting insights? So if the value is let me get insights, I'd that I'd actually like to get some velocity with that. Could I get insights more quickly, right. Could I get through that? iteration cycle faster. And of course, there are multiple ways to do that. But here's one example. This was, this was an example from Google. And they were they were working on reducing time to insight with AI. This is an interesting article from them. They were using some of their video imaging computer vision AI, right, which is actually takes takes a lot of horsepower from from the computational perspective, but in any event, in their article, they they ended up using AI to analyze videos, and they were doing it with Dunkin Donuts.
And, you know, because you know, can you have too many donuts? I don't know. So they're using it with Dunkin Donuts. And they were building a Youtube video to promote I think it's called their Donut Fries. I didn't even know such a thing existed. But apparently, if you marry a donut with a potato, you get fries, Donut Fries. So in any event, they were they were doing this donut fries thing. And by by running AI against their videos, they were able to make adjustments to the video. And they got more than 6000 comments on it, which ultimately built the right sentiment score for them to get the right promotion level.
Gosh, what does that mean? The net effect is they ended up getting insight tank time down to 28 minutes right now that's that's kind of amazing, right? I mean, that that's not typical. But the point is, you'd want to be able to take your business, get your business information, and then run it through a cycle and get that turnaround time as quickly as possible. Because the sooner we can discover the divots in the road, that are the real problems we need to solve for our business. Actually, then the better it is for us, we can move our truck move our business forward. Okay, everyone, the key to reduce time to insight is to use AI in your business. Hey, everyone, thank you for joining and until next time, go get some insights.

Totally sort of on hiatus, but WAIT
I left off on a note that I wasn’t doing good. So here’s what’s up. I quit my job that I hated and that hated me and it was killing me going there. Honestly the entire experience there could be a comic in of itself. I started changing almost instantly after starting there and my SO brought that to my attention close to when I decided to quit. My anxiety was through the roof, I was getting physically ill from it. It’s been about three months since I quit and I actually feel much better than I did.
The decision to quit came around the end of Christmas season (aka retail hell), my stress level hit it’s max. With work and with how things are at home, I became suicidal and started breaking my things instead of hurting myself. (On a side note I discovered I have a deep raspy yelling voice that would be perfect for an anime character)
(This is kind of long so I’ll put one of those read more thingies)
I talked with my SO about it and I agreed to quit the job, get back on my anxiety medication , and get back into steady therapy. (I was given a new counselor and hadn’t been able to make it to therapy because of work.) Shortly after I started becoming viciously sick around my period, turns out I just have extremely bad pms to the point ai throw up and become Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde. It is horrible. I didn’t figure it was my period until recently though, for a while I thought I was bipolar or had the flu, even pregnant. Nope, it was just pms. I had no idea how common that is for women until it happened to me.
With the job, I had a lady curse me out because I had to charge her for  10 cent bag that she wanted a giant barrel of pretzels put into, which didn’t fit anyway. That wasn’t even my worst customer by far, but it’s definitely my favorite story to tell. (There will definitely be an episode about that bitch.) I hurt my wrist the first month I worked there and my supervisor never made a report refused to report it, so I wasn’t seen by their doctor, and none of my managers or coworkers were notified of my injury, so my workload and tasks weren’t changed. I went to the my doctor before quitting so I’d have the injury on record, he found it was a sprained wrist, and told me it wouldn’t heal because I’d been using it too much. (Which is why work is supposed to fucking change your work tasks when you have a fucking work related injury.) This same supervisor looked me up and down with the fucking stink eye during my interview and I knew she was going to be a problem, and I wasn’t wrong.
I spent a good two months trying to figure out exactly how to report that my workplace refused to make report for my injury, but at the end of it I just wanted to quit and be done with all of it. This lady had definitely been acting like that way before I worked there, there’s no way the company or at least the other managers weren’t aware of what she does. As much as I would like to get her fired for being a gigantic asshole, it’s not my job to babysit women in their damn 50’s. And she definitely wasn’t the only deciding factor. Besides the shitty customers treating me like shit on a daily basis, I only had  a handful of coworkers who were my saving grace there. They were awesome to work with and I genuinely looked forward to seeing them. But when they weren’t there, my calls would get ignored by my coworkers and managers, I’d find them all chilling out in the office, customers would be left waiting for over 30 minutes because no one wanted to answer me, it was just ridiculous. I could go on and on but I think my final straw was being told by a manager that I needed to “stop doodling” while at the register…. like fucking when??? I asked for clarification or a date on when I’d done such a thing and said manager refused to explain or anything.
I mean, that and when I changed my availability for health reasons. I was working full shifts and 4 days out of the week during peek Christmas season, and changed my availability to just one day a week. Car broke down and you know, I was suicidal and loosing my mind. I made sure to change my availability only after peek was over, but gave management a heads up so they had time to fill shifts. Shit supervisor was the one I had to talk to about it first and she said ‘You’re kidding me, you’re changing your availability during peek?” And I’d had enough of her shit so I sad=id back “No I’m changing it after peek next week, but I’m doing the considerate thing and notifying people now.”
Fucking bitch. Like wow I wrote it was for medical reasons, thank you so much for your fucking concern.
The ironic part was they said I was doing absolutely great, but I’d stopped giving all my fucks over a month ago and started half assing my job like the people who got all the credit for slacking off while others and myself did circles around them. Now that I stopped doing my job well, they liked me? lmfao hwwaaaaat? When I was busting my ass I was always told I was “straggling” and needed to do better. I just… how does that even work? forget it, I don’t work there anymore, it’s not my problem. I quit without giving two weeks notice. I wrote my resignation letter before my shift, and when my shift was done I quit on the spot. Shitty supervisor never looked happier. (lol I bet)
It was weird, that place had fast turnover, but also had people who had been working there for ears. (Shit supervisor had been working there 17+ years) And now I totally get why.
The minute I walked out of the break room knowing I never had to work there again, I felt a giant weight lifted from my entire body. It was absolutely amazing. Thing is, me not having that job doesn’t even make a dent in my income because it was so far away, it had shitty hours, and I was spending so much money on gas to get there. It was absolutely pointless. Now I can focus on things that actually benefit me and build my future.
So I’m back in therapy back on my meds, not having the life drained out of me, and Nmom has been in therapy for like 5 months now and she’s starting to actually be normal, it’s like she’s learning to manager her emotions or something. I don’t trust it, but it makes things a lot easier and I’ll take the quiet while I can get it. Bad news is my grandpa is in the hospital right now, he nearly died, had to have a pacemaker out in him. It’s been a big ordeal but it could be worse. SO things are changing for me again, someone has to be there for him and it’s actually going to be me and Nmom seeing as no one else will. Things are a bit up in the air but I know it could of been worse so I’m just thankful.
My SO is going to be moving soon to his own place and I’ll be living with him half of the week and the rest of the week with my mom and probably with my grandpa when he finally comes home. Honestly I am scared, but I’m also determined. I decided to go back to school, pay off bills, invest in things I need to do, and get back to what I love or I think my soul will die if I don’t.
The comic nasty mom will be back soon, and eventually, it will have to end as well. I’ve found that I tend to reopen wounds through my muse, so i need to find a way to really really, really make this comic for myself. I also tend to care about others more than myself, even in my art. I haven’t really been doing this comic for myself at all, I think I’ve been doing it for others more than for myself. And I need to change that. I’m glad my comic has been able to make others smile and laugh, and it definitely will continue to. But I need to change how I approach my art and life if I want to start taking care of myself seriously.
For now I’m going to start getting my feet wet again with my art and buy a new scanner because mine broke like 4 months ago, and the bastard gave me a bruise last week on my foot. (printers are evil!!!!) There will definitely be a lot of drawings and work sketches to show, so that’s good.
I just got on birth control last week and I’m starting to feel some of the changes and stuff. I’m taking care of my body and hopefully my pms doesn’t make me go crazy. Last week I cried because my SO bought me french fries, and an hour before that I wanted to throw my iced coffee at people because Starbucks mad it wring and I was already nauseated and I got more nauseated because there wasn’t enough creme…. yeah, I’m a mess ahahahah.
I’m doing a lot of soul searching for sure right now, but I’ll be back soon! And with more art! And possibly another comic for when this comic finishes! (Shhhh that part is a secret!)
Until next time, I’ll always reply to comments, and I have a ask box on my tumblr as well. I have tumblr and instagram so that should keep readers and friends a little entertained while I’m away!

Entry 161
I smiled, thinking of a story and saying, “I’ll never forget the time I chased a mugger into an elevator.  He shot me five times after we fought a bit.  The bullets passed through me and broke the controls behind me.  You should have seen the look on his face when he realized that he was stuck in the elevator with me kicking his ass!  I knocked him out, busted the hatch open, and left him there while I took the belongings back to the victim and called the cops.  I heard that the cops were totally confused when they got to the scene, since my blood kinda splattered all over from the bullets, but the victim was able to identify his mugger who got sentenced to seven years!”
“I imagine those poor officers were on the search for a dead body still quite some time later.” stated Alma.
Nodding, James then said, “I would hardly count that as a typical reason for an elevator to fail.  I doubt they’re shot too often.”
“Well, most of my experiences weren’t quite that interesting.” I assured him before relating to him a number of the other times.  Most of what I experienced ended in talking with whomever was stuck with me.  “However, there was this one time when I had to help give birth, not something I ever expected to be doing.  There was just me and this pregnant lady, Mary, stuck together, and her water broke.”
 “Did you panic?” asked James.
“Nah.  I was nervous, but I’ve been in my share of rough situations.  We managed.  I went with her to the hospital after we were out, and the baby was in good health.  We got really lucky, honestly.” I assured him.
 Alma looked dubious.
“We did!  I felt a little bad after though.  She wanted contact information to thank me later, but I didn’t have any.  She probably thought I was lying.” I admitted.  “Anyways, there was also this time with a guy who had claustrophobia.  We were stuck in there for a long time, but I got him through it.”
 “How?” asked James.
“Just talking.  I kept assuring him that we were safe.  Got him thinking about a beach he went to on a vacation when he was younger.  It was rough going, but we did manage.” I insisted.  “That wasn’t nearly as bad as this other time when a bunch of high school boys had squeezed in with me on an elevator.  There were far too many of them for me to have a clue what was being said, but several of them were hitting on me the entire time.  Even worse, a number of them kept ‘accidentally’ bumping into me.  I did not take kindly to being felt up, so I got a bit violent.  They worked really hard at squeezing away from me afterward.  I really hate guys acting like that.”
“I can imagine.  I’m sorry that you’ve had to deal with things like that.” claimed James.  He looked completely earnest.
I shrugged and said, “A superhero has to deal with all sorts of unusual situations.”
“The police must have a room filled with your DNA samples by now though.  Don’t you ever worry about cleaning up?” he asked.
I was about to try explaining why I didn’t, but Alma started talking.
She said, “I couldn’t get a viable sample from her hair, skin, or blood, so I can’t imagine that being a problem for her.”
James turned to her, but I could see he wasn’t talking in the mirror, just looking at her.
“What?” she asked, raising her eyebrows.
He looked like he was thinking hard about what to say.
“Oh, please.  Portentia doesn’t even know what she is, so I made an attempt to check.” stated Alma before James could find the words he wanted.
I didn’t really want these two going at it, so I quickly took hold of his arm and told him “I don’t mind, James.  Really.”
“Did you give her your consent?” he asked, staring down at me.  He was so tall.
I shrugged and said, “No, but had Alma been able to get a DNA sample from me, I would need to start being more careful about that sort of thing, so she was, in a way, helping me.”
“I gather that you were already aware that your cells are exceedingly odd.” stated Alma, looking irritable.
“Well, yeah.  A number of doctors have tried doing tests on me before.  A couple weren’t very friendly about it, but all of them said my cells are weird in one way or another.” I replied.
“That is the understatement of the year.” she snapped.  Looking to James, she asked “How much do you know of genetics, James?”
“Well, about as much as you’d expect from high school biology.” he told her.
She sighed and said, “You really need to read more.  Simply put, Portentia’s cells look as if someone made an extremely crude model of a human cell.  There’s no way for them to receive any sustenance by normal means.  They’re dead, meaning you’re letting something akin to a zombie hug your arm.”
Zombie?  Nah.  I was perfectly alive.
“Wait.  So you’re saying she’s a zombie?” asked James.
Alma shook her head and said, “No.  I clearly said ‘akin to a zombie’ if you’d pay more attention.  She’s obviously distracting you.  Zombies can’t heal like her, and they’re not nearly so unlucky.”
Unlucky!?  There were few things I liked being called less.
“Pardon, but are you saying that zombies are real?” he asked.
“Yes, James.  There are ways to animate flesh with magic, but practitioners of such disgusting arts are fortunately rare.” she explained.
Seeing her glance at me, I said, “I’m not that unlucky.”
“Yes, you are.  Getting stuck in as many elevators as you’ve claimed is highly improbable.  I’d have called you a liar had I not witnessed your misfortune for the past couple days.” she boldly asserted.
I let go of James’ arms and resisted the urge to punch her.  A superhero couldn’t give in to violent impulses.  Instead, I said, “I admit that my life has been harder than most in a number of ways, but there’s no reason to blame my luck.  There are many bad people in this world that cause misfortune to others.  If I manage to rid this world of its villains, you’ll see far less people being ‘unlucky’.  Besides, I met James.  How much luckier could I be?”
Why did people try blaming the many terrible things that happened on bad luck so often?  I hated it, especially coming from her.  She could do so much, but she just stood by, letting bad things happen to others.  I wasn’t the cause of those bad things.  I was the one who fought to set things right.
Alma rolled her eyes as she said, “You two are completely oblivious, aren’t you.  Since we’ve arrived, Aaliyah has gone out of her way time and time again to subtly help people.  I’ve never seen her bump into anything by accident, but she maneuvered at least twenty people yesterday alone while pretending to stumble in one way or another.  She saved several from falling objects, one man from being impaled, and another from getting his hand smashed between a trolley and a display.  I stopped the strangest case of accidental magic I’ve seen to date just this morning.  As James, at least, should be aware, residual energy, when left alone, floats about until it reaches a state of equilibrium.  Over the course of the night, drifting energy from Ai and Mai’s water buffoonery nearly formed an explosive spell which could have destroyed the entire suite.  The odds of such precise patterns being formed on accident are ridiculously poor.”
James touched my shoulder.  He was staring down at me.  He said, “I think Alma has a point.  Aaliyah has been up to something.”
I felt betrayed.  “How can you take her side?” I demanded.  “Little girls trip all the time!”
He shook his head and told me “Aaliyah can dance acrobatically on a curved footboard that’s not even two inches wide while playing music on her violin that’d make angels weep from its beauty.  She doesn’t trip.  Get to know her better, and you’ll believe me.  I promise.  I can’t, however, agree that you’re definitely the cause of these mishaps, since nothing has happened at home during your stay.”
The sense of betrayal was still there, but lessened.  James was a wonderful guy.  He wasn’t blaming me like she was, and he was right; things rarely went poorly in his home.  Life there this past week was incredibly peaceful.
“I do have reason to believe Portentia’s the cause, James.” claimed Alma.
 I glared at her.
 “Oh?  What?” he asked.
“I’m not going to say.  You’ll figure it out if you keep her in your employ.” she told him.
Ha!  She just wanted to blame things on me.  Luckily, she dropped the subject.  I knew I couldn’t really do anything to her, but the temptation to try stuck with me through the next half hour as we all stood mostly in silence.
There were the usual apologies when we were finally freed, but getting a discount on the rooms was well worth the trouble.  I told my companions as much as we made our way to the booths.  We weren’t even late.  Fortunate, I’d say.
Aaliyah hopped up onto the counter, waving vigorously at us.  She started explaining what we missed.  I did have to admit that most little girls couldn’t have jumped like her.  I turned toward Brenna when I felt her hand on my shoulder.
 “What’s bothering you?” she asked.
Brenna was a great girl.  I wasn’t into fashion like she was, but she was really nice.  Thoughtful.  I wanted to be her friend.
Aaliyah slipped!  I dove to catch her, grabbing her out of the air and rolling to land on my back.  As I looked up, I caught sight of the halberd slamming into the counter and breaking apart.  I quickly covered the tiny girl in my cape to protect her from the debris.  Brenna had stepped back and was safe.
What?  I had been standing there.  That halberd would have slammed into me.  What if my costume had been torn?  I stared at the tiny girl hugging my chest and grinning at me.  She winked.
No way.  This was a coincidence, wasn’t it?  Aaliyah had just slipped.  Alma couldn’t be right.  Something else was at work here.
James had helped the halberd’s owner back onto his feet.  The armor of the man’s cosplay came apart as he was walking, causing him to trip.  Aaliyah helped ease his mind, giving him a sticker of his character and posing with him for a picture.  The others around us seemed to appreciate my group’s good humor about the accident.  This would probably be good for public perception of us.
As James and I worked a shift together, Aaliyah took to the stage, dancing and singing.  I found myself watching her every chance I got.  She really was acrobatic.  Going by the crowd, her singing was probably great too.  Everyone seemed really moved by the performance. What if I really was affecting things just by being here?
