I got into critical role during campaign 2 and when I was caught up, I decided to go back and listen to 1, then shortly into my listen, the show was announced and I was on the fence about which experience I wanted. I could either go into the show with no knowledge, or go into the show being one of those "IT HAPPENED DIFFERENTLY IN THE SOURCE MATERIAL" kinda people. and no. there is no reality where I can keep my mouth shut about that stuff. XD it is a negative character trait of mine XD Ultimately, I kept listening to campaign 1 because I wanted to witness the weird fall out with Orion, after only hearing about it and reading gossip-style posts. I love gossip / tea channels, so I thought it would be a bigger on screen fall out worth watching several hundred hours for. it was not XD I fizzled out listening and decided to just watch the show instead of trying to catch up. It's been a really great 2 seasons so far and I'm SO excited for more :D anyway! Keyleth is my favorite, I love Marisha and cosplaying as redheads, I think her awkwardness is really earnest and sweet and relatable. Vex isn't my cup of tea, the bitchiness is a detractor for me, but I love Laura Bailey and she did a great job bringing her to life.

You don’t need to post this but just so you know, it really does sounding like almost no one in the story who have witness to or have heard the MC’s work think it is very interesting at all 🫣, and just occasionally a person will randomly appreciate for some reason, such as Orion. I think maybe a lot of readers might had anticipated a type of MC that has the experience of undeniably suited for this and so on, in the way you have sometimes describe some others in the story, such as S

Sorry but I'm going to post this mostly (and apologies that your ask is the one who is gonna get this long response, my ire isn't towards you because you're being very kind about it but others have, honestly, not been) because other people probably have this thought as well but I'm sort of confused on where this whole idea of MC being useless/untalented/not suitable is coming from?

I've said before there will be people who question MC's talent, but that's just natural--not everyone is going to think someone is worthy of their fame and attention. People thinking that there are better singers out there doesn't invalidate what MC is capable of. If I wrote a story where every person thinks MC is the greatest thing since sliced bread then that wouldn't be an entertaining story lol You need tension, and you need naysayers so every win can feel satisfying. Plus, doubters is a natural and normal thing in the business. MC is literally in a competition where other very talented bands are competing. Even though they're the main character, they're the main character of their story. Not everyone elses. Other bands believe they are just as deserving--if not more--of winning than MC's band. It's natural. To those bands MC is just another person they need to beat to win.

Seven being more famous doesn't mean MC isn't talented (the band literally voted for MC's vocals over Seven's). G being more famous doesn't mean MC isn't talented. Hell, if MC's band lost BOTB and went home empty handed, that doesn't mean MC isn't talented. It's part of the competition. Amazing bands and amazing singers get rejected all the time. There isn't room for everybody.

I do want to mention that people probably feel this way because I can not give concrete answers about an MC that is largely customizable. In the game, your MC can lack confidence. Or they can be arrogant. They can believe their skills are lackluster, or they can believe they are the best singer alive. People expect me to answer questions that have varied answers depending on what MC each player is playing. I can't give you that! I do my best.

2. August auditioned to be their drummer, and while August is largely indifferent, they admit themselves they were interested and they tell MC how good MC's voice is.

3. Maya is quite literally following MC's band around the USA because she's that much of a fan.

4. Seven dislikes MC, but Seven is not a liar: they will always stand by their opinion that MC is talented. That's one of the biggest reasons why Seven liked MC so much: their artistry.

anyway this isn't an attack on you anon but it is kind of frustrating that people think MC is just this untalented fluke that didn't work hard to get to where they are today. Just as much as MC is yours, they're also mine, and I wanted to make it clear that MC isn't lazy nor are they someone who just does nothing and doesn't try. At least that part isn't customizable: MC works and has worked really freaking hard to be where they are.

Listen, last year I did two hours and twenty-eight minutes and when I hit two hours and fourteen minutes this year I was like "whatever, print it." Also I liked how they hung together and some life stuff kind of meant that what I needed was a very loopable couple hours, not a curated several hours. I think every time I hear a Donavan song I go "this is my favourite" but it's more like "this is my favourite right now." More love and relationship type songs because you can't get away from that in music tbh, but also it's a fun thing to theme around.

They're both very respectful of each other's boundaries

Sebastian's basement isn't one of them tho, Orion spends most of his time there because is comfy and he doesn't have to worry about his father barging in

OK so Orion is head over heels with Sam

Absolutely smitten, a little cliche, whatever way you want to call it

Sam is a little too oblivious about it

Which is weird because he's not dumb but you know, somehow he doesn't even notice

Sam is constantly experimenting tunes with Orion since he is basically a magic bard

They have fun, sadly they can't do it often because Orion is often busy

Sam forgets about stuff easily and Orion helps him to keep up with them

Sam never forgets about that homework due tomorrow with Orion around!

Which sucks but is for the greater good

Orion doesn't even try to hide his feeling for Sam

In the context of the game, if you start dating Sam and you are uncomfortable with his crush, Orion will back away

Or at least he'll do his best to hide it as much as he can

He may not interact much with Sam as a result but such is life

SWTE A1 C11 - 2 Winners, 6 Losers 

“Let’s slaughter the little prince.”

Admittedly the most active chapter yet. Still in Eurus, but it’s getting less Winter Wonderland and more Nightmare Before Christmas, as evidenced by a monstrous drinking game, a life-threatening race, and that last sentence. Without further ado, here are our many losers and occasional winners of “A Foul-Mouthed, Sociopathic ***”. Spoilers below the cut. 

Winner: James Potter (& Simon & The Unnamed Female Waitress) 

I’m starting to think that no matter what happens to him he’s a winner if only because of his mentality? Anyways, he is undoubtedly a winner this chapter- he has a fun night that he enjoys, and got a family heirloom that he thought he lost, a bracelet designed in Hyderabad by an ancestor, hand-delivered to him by his crush, who then admitted that they were friends. Getting screamed at by said crush for experimenting sexually aside, he’s kind of in the zone. 

Winner: Remus Lupin 

Ski Champion Lupin went on a date with Sirius, won against Regulus on a Black Diamond course, and kept his presidential candidate loyal to him. A win is a win. 

Loser: Lucius Malfoy 

To be honest, the only reason I’m putting Soy Boy Himbo Lucius as a loser is because he got fired from Greyscar. Seriously, he held his own during Slut in the Hut, was lowkey having a romantic moment with Narcissa, and remains MMG’s chairman. Unfortunately, one of the most powerful men in America know he was a spy, so he is absolutely and completely fucked. 

Loser: Emma Vanity 

Even though she was the first person voted out in Slut in the Hut, she had to deal with the most neurotic man on earth in her room (that is also her boss) until four in the fucking morning, watched his family humiliate him, dragged his hungover ass into her Rolls Royce, AND had to update him when he finally woke up. Justice for my girl Vanity. 

Loser: Orion Black 

Regulus, arguably his most suitable heir, let him down, and his other son was outed for his instability! I also feel like he’s getting  bit suspicious about Regulus’ intentions. Most obviously, his dead brother, Cygnus, just got an article published about him that seems weirdly accusatory. 

Loser: Narcissa Black

LISTEN, NARCISSA IS A LOSER AND I WILL HEAR NO COUNTERARGUMENTS. Malfoy got fired, and her conference was mediocre, and since she’s as much as a batshit perfectionist as Reggie is, that is the equivalent of standing on stage and bawling her eyes out. In Narcissa’s brain, as long as the attention (negative or positive) is on her male counterparts, she’s a loser- and in a horrible way, she’s right. 

Loser: Sirius Black 

Watching Lupin win the race was probably a massive turn-on for Sirius, but it kind of feels like he’s on the verge of some very bad decisions. His relationship with Lupin isn’t the most positive influence, and even though he’s been sober for a while, he’s still treated as unstable and volatile. If he doesn’t find a sense of stability, either with Marlene or in himself, I see things going downhill for Sirius, and FAST. Also, he didn’t get that joke about him being Oedipus. That’s so embarrassing. 

Loser: Regulus Black 

Since I don’t need to justify this, I’m just going to list his losses in order of least to most humiliating.

McGonagall being late 

The insinuation that he shouldn’t be serviced (AKA him misunderstanding Barty and Evan's hardcore flirting) 

Being forced to admit that him and James are friends  

Lupin getting to McGonagall before him 

Lupin beating him by two minutes…

…because he made the conscious decision to stop and retrieve James’ bracelet

Returning it the next morning to see that James has had a threesome with a woman and a man

It's interesting that we can still hear the rain, even though we are (presumably) not in Eskew.

On a sidenote, I feel as if the experience of listening to Eskew is one that would be greatly heightened by location. For example, I am currently listening/taking notes while sitting at the top of an old ladder resting against a tree, with a cup of tea beside me¹. I have previously listened/taken notes while sitting on my bed, as the rain pounded down outside my window. I feel as if, perhaps, the ideal - whoops! An ant just fell in my tea - location, for me, at least, would be something like that of my grandmother's holiday house², down near my cousins. It is a draughty house, and the wind howls both inside and out, as the rain pelts down. Anyway, back to Eskew.

It and Make a Move are the only songs of theirs I know lol. There are bands I like a lot but a huge percentage of my saved music is like one percent of any given band's discography because for a very long time I didn't actively seek out music other bands did and with few exception mostly listened to whatever just waltzed into view and that's still kinna my default mode.

I remember really being into Michael Jackson and Tub Ring when I was in my preteens or thereabouts, and then Blue Oyster Cult awhile after that. Blue Oyster Cult and Tub Ring are still very important to me, Michael Jackson is more difficult for obvious reasons but coincidentally all his songs on my playlist are covers - I swear I didn't even do that on purpose, I just really like those specific versions.

I was a huge fan of Hollywood Undead but Day of the Dead was a disappointment that deflated a lot of my interest.

I fell in love with Falling in Reverse around the same time and their first three albums before Radke leaned more into rap will always be a core part of who I am despite him betraying me personally as a trans woman with the things he's said.

MSI is more difficult - I loved them for years (having found them because they had a minor connection to Tub Ring) and then Jimmy Urine getting sued for what he did was pretty bad, especially since just before it happened I was describing to someone how his unique and distinctive voice in particular was a major part of their appeal.

The Orion Experience I discovered was the center of grooming allegations literally like a day or two after discovering them and being like "holy fuck this could be my new favorite band ever". I had to just sit there, slowly process the information, then take a deep sigh and resolve to separate the art from the artist.

But most stuff I like doesn't come with those issues.

I think if I were to list my "favorite" bands/musical artists, it'd be something like, in no particular order, BOC, Eminem, Poppy, Lemon Demon, Britney Spears, Three Days Grace, Tub Ring, and Ronnie Radke (which I phrase that way because my favorite of his is actually Situations from when he was with Escape the Fate). But that only gets across a very small slice of the music I like, you know?

For some reason I'm especially picky about rap. There are rappers I like, certainly, not only am I a huge fan of Eminem but - as unfortunate as it is in retrospect, the rap equivalent of FIR/MSI/TOE - getting real into Kanye in, I think, 2014-16? Somewhere around there? Was a lovely experience. But generally, I can give you a lot of rap I like and almost none of it is by the same artist.

Anyway, I started listening to Get Well specifically because I wanted to branch out because Make a Move inspired a character (or at least the direction I've taken her in, she was kinna a minor NPC before this) in my writing. She's a singer in a band and I was like, oh, in this universe Melody Priest wrote Make a Move and it was a really big hit for her band, the Gods of Pegāna.

Just Space Mermaid Princess things.

Obviously the baby of the Peg’asi siblings, Delphie grew up knowing a couple of things were certain:

- She was royalty and thus would never get to experience certain things that regular people sometimes would (eg. romance, freedom of choice etc.)

- And one day she would be married off as part of some negotiation or agreement and would be expected to bear children.

She didn’t really mind either of these things because she didn’t really know any different. Playing at the idea of romance and adventure was all well and good but she would never give up the safety and security of the palace. She was well-fed, well-educated, and never wanted for anything, and she knew that most people could never say the same.

In short she was grateful for what she had.

In turn for living such a lavish lifestyle she believed she needed to be the best royal child possible so she could eventually make it up to her people by being a good leader in one way or other. Chances were high that she’d inevitably be married off to a King, Prince or equivalent from some other planet. From that position she’d need to be a good ear, a trusted advisor and confidant to her husband, a real source of power for the thone she’d married onto.

So she spent her whole childhood studying, listening, watching, over time becoming more serious. More dedicated to her role, but denying herself.

She’d never experienced a crush or the first butterflies of love because she’d crush the idea before it evolved. She never took lovers or fooled around because it was an unnecessary distraction. She knew about intimacy and sex through her older siblings, because they never seemed as focused as her, and in the reproductive sense because that was part of her job, but she never sought it for herself.

And then Vexx showed up.

Delphie was slowly, slowly shown little things she could’ve had if she let herself unwind. They never got too deep into their almost-romance, tangled fingers when no one could see and kisses that lingered a little too long on her hand, but everything fell to shit before she could decide if it was worth risking her poisition for a shot at love.

All the Andromeda crew saw was a serious, sharp young woman when she finally showed her face around the ship. Quick to stand up for herself, witty and excellent with words, clearly conflicted about why she felt the need to be so...walled up.

Of course on seeing ‘serious, sharp witted, walled up’ Damon is there to toy with her, split open the walls with aggressive flirting, get a rise out of her.

Unfortunately she goes along with it really well, much to his surprise. And that gives him some fresh meat with some substance to play with.

Not that Delphie can remember why she feels like she’s just plunged into the deep end and is desperately trying to navigate the exhileration and nerves when it comes to relationships like this.

When she finally does remember, well, it’s a bit late. Family’s dead, she’s been betrayed, and now she’s accidentally caught feelings for the asshole that suggested they sell her out.

Fair.

She spends a bit of time being conflicted about ‘abandoning’ her princessly duties but none of this was what she expected anyway. Maybe as well roll with it.

After seeing Cursa and Orion she very deliberately decides to abandon her Princessly duties because who has royalty actually helped anyway? Even if she was a really good ruler, a really good leader, a really good wife...would that be enough?

She thinks she wants to float about in space forever, from place to place, like she has the past while. It isn’t until Tilaarin where she realises that she actually just wants to be wherever Damon is because this dumbass is might be in love. Plus ‘taking back her crown’ seems like bullshit, even if she‘s happy her sister is alive.

Personally I like to headcanon that all the characters are genderfluid, but that's just me lol.

I kind of think that aside from love/heartache, a lot of songs are about anger. Like it's one of the more powerful emotions, you know? So there are plenty of angry songs full of yelling that could apply.

But I think it's interesting to note how Satan's own song is the softest one. It's all piano and sweetness.

Because I think Satan is a romantic at heart.

Anyway, I hope you find some excellent songs for him!

There's no way I could repeat the perfection of last year's June playlist and this year I seem confined to more-or-less-two-hour playlists, but this one works for me.

I feel like 'Starburster' by Fontaines D.C. and 'Smalltown Boy' by Bronski Beat are in conversation with each other a bit, but maybe its me.

Speaking of 'Smalltown Boy' there's a recent article about it in El País that gives some historical context to folks who might be younger. It's been 30 years since it came out and there was a reissue this year and well, if you're queer the whole cycle of it is a mood tbh.

'Starburster' is described by NME as "that shock of trying to grasp reality amidst all the chaos" and was written about a panic attack - and you feel it!

While looking up stuff about 'Smalltown Boy' I found this list of song titles posted in a thread in 1993, archived thanks to Queer Resources Directory.

I was thrilled to encounter Allie X's 'June Gloom' as this June was particularly cool and cloudy - we barely saw the mountain this month. I learned it's a whole SoCal marine cloud layer thing. Weather is fun.
