So a while back, I saw someone comment or write a post about how "I know it's so hard to get an account on Ao3." Or something of that nature. And that baffled me because it's not??? Like, there's a waiting list, is that what's hard?
Tumblr media
I went over to Chrome on my phone (I use Firefox but didn't want to log out just to do this) and took a screenshot of the "Get Invited!" page. Like, this is it, folks. Give them your email and just wait your turn. That's it. No money involved, no filling out forms upon forms, nothing much at all.
Someone explain to me how that's apparently hard to do, especially posting that on Tumblr, which you also signed up with an email to get an account for.
No hate to that individual who said it, though. I honestly don't remember the post or context because it was months ago probably, but it still just baffles me. It's just that I honestly don't understand what could be hard about it at all.
Is it that you have to wait? And if so, big deal? I've had to wait months, years, for stuff I'm excited to read/see. Waiting at most a couple of weeks for access to account-only fanfics (especially now with this AI scraping crap) is nothing. Seriously.

ao3 is great because you'll read the most heart wrenching life-alteringly beautiful and poetic piece of literature you've ever laid eyes upon with a title from a hozier song and be like "I need to see other works by this author" and then you realize the authors username is assdragon420

You know you have a PROBLEM When A03 randomly goes down for like 7 hours and it feels like your entire world just comes to a complete stop, because you have no idea what to do with yourself for that time period😭
Did I have access to literally every social media still, including Youtube, Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, online shopping apps, and even Tumblr? Yes.
Did I even consider perusing them? Nope.
Did I consider utilizing my access to Netflix, Prime Video, and Tubi, not to mention my collection of DVDs? Nope.
What about the literal hundreds of physical books I have between my room and my basement? Not for a second.
Did I take this opportunity to go talk to my family members, spend some quality time with them? Why would I?
It deadass took me FIVE hours before I even considered opening one of the 75 (which represents a problem in and of itself) fics I have downloaded on my phone for offline reading.
To be fair, I can’t focus on reading more than 1 book at a time and I’m already taking a break from CR, so I didn’t want to add another fic into the mix, AND MY FIC WAS LEFT ON A CLIFFHANGER but still.
I really just sat there and did absolutely nothing but sleep and feel like an NPC for 6 hours😭

Oh good gravy, you guys 😳💖💖💖
This is honestly incredible. And a little surreal. I’m fucking starstruck. 🫢✨
How can I ever repay your kindness? More stories? You got it. You want me to read yours? Already done (for real). More art? More music? HOW can I possibly return this much love??? I am so overwhelmed with joy I can just about SCREAM 💖💖💖✨
(but I’m in a meeting so I’ll have to contain my excitement for now)

How—what? HUH????
I-I just hit 3k on The Wingman not but a month ago. And Peter Hart hit 1k just a couple weeks prior. The growth and support has been outstanding. I’m trembling with joy and gratitude. Honestly, I really can’t thank you all enough. ✨🌈✨
Seriously, you are all the BEST and I love and appreciate each and every one of you dearly. This amount of love and support you have shown, and continue to show, is beyond anything I could have ever dreamed of. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Thank you. 💫

There is a special place in hell for all the people behind these bot attacks that harm AO3 and the communities we built.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A reminder that Archive of Our Own is not Instagram or TikTok. It isn’t run by a big company with money and power. The site is a non-profit site run by volunteers (fans), for fans. And its main purpose is to bring people within the same fandom together and connect artists with audiences who would love and appreciate these artists’ works. It’s the only platform without any ads, without any censorship, without any of these capitalism bullshit. It doesn’t make users pay for any features and the only source of money they get, to keep the site up and running, is through donations. It’s literally a safe place for every fandom.
To think that it’s a target just because it’s easier to attack than those huge companies is just so sad.
Not to mention that there are so many genuine guest users out there (people who aren’t logged in / don’t have an AO3 account), and these people are directly affected by this whole thing, because they are no longer able to comment and connect with their favorite creators — and this still affects creators directly because I know for a fact that getting comments and being able to connect with their audience mean the world to them. I don’t blame AO3 for disabling guest comments altogether.
I do blame and curse the fuckers behind these bot attacks though.
If you try to sabotage AO3, out of all the other platforms out there, you are pathetic. You’re not just attacking a small, independent company, you’re trying to tear apart people’s communities and safe place. Disrespectfully, fuck you. Burn in hell.
Mad respect to all the brave soldiers that are AO3 volunteers who work harder than god fighting these scums.
I know these brave soldiers will win in the end (they always did, this isn’t their first battle, mind you), but in the meantime I’m sending them all my love and respect. They truly are the heroes.

I go out of my way to comment on every piece of lit that I come across on this app because comments are really so 'uncommon'.
Like, I want you to know that I enjoyed your hard work? Reblogs and liking are amazing, yes, but dang, it feels great when someone takes the time to write even just 3 simple words: "i appreciate this!'
Little things like these really make a fun and healthy community imo.

AO3 feels so unique amongst modern websites these days in that it keeps its design and layout simple, without bloat, no ads AT ALL, no constant re-designs that no one asked for, and it just... works...
Loads quickly!
Like a relic of the old days of the internet (ok, we had ads back then too BUT STILL!)
