Aoi Zaizen

The show hates her but she is a very good character. Trickstars and Marincesses are both hella cool decks.

Aoi’s parents died when she was around 6 and she was mostly raised by her older brother. She’s the 2nd best Duelist in the VRAINS at the start of the series and over the course of the first season goes from being rather shy and only putting on a happy facade to a determined Duelist willing to risk her life to save the world. She even puts a stop to a virus that’s leaving people in comas.

Aoi gets two more avatars (Blue Girl and Blue Maiden) and also obtains a semi-magic AI named Aqua as her partner.

She never lets her trauma keep her down and was a huge inspiration for me in high school!

AOI ZAIZEN IS THE BEST GIRL! She's gonna sweep this whole tournament and here's why:

Is the peak YGO Girl who Deserved Better from the writers

Just a normal everyday girl IRL who secretly turns into an ultra bubbly sweetheart idol who everyone absolutely loves when in the virtual world.

Her VRAINS persona is extremely popular, and none of her fans know that she's just Some Girl.

Plays an idol deck with Trickstars (toxic meta combo not included)

Is sheltered by her overprotective older step-brother/guardian, but very quickly stands up for herself and what she believes is right.

Mutual protection with said step-brother is the sweetest thing ever, I love Aoi and Akira moments so much!

She does NOT fall head over heels for the main protagonist, but they do share a nice conversation and handshake as they become friends IRL (one of the best VRAINS scenes, honestly)

Absolutely wrecks Soulburner for like 99% of their duel, and only loses because the writers don't understand how to move a plot along if Soulburner doesn't win as many duels as possible

Duels two seasonal antagonists, and completely destroys them both before losing thanks to an OP anime card that will never see the light of day, and a one-off card made specifically to counter her strategy and have her lose.

Her first virtual avatar, Blue Angel, is inspired by the main character from her favorite childhood book. That's adorable!

Her main summoning chants are all about hopes, dreams, and believing in yourself.

In the English dub, she says "I could so swipe left on you right now" implying that Tinder exists in the Yu-Gi-Oh universe.

Never got the Magical Girl transformation sequence she deserved because the writers apparently were not aware that Yu-Gi-Oh VRAINS is a Magical Girl show, despite the two main dudes getting that special treatment.

she is iconic, basically the unofficial mascot of the anime. She has so much merch and so much fanart she is THE girl ever

Vrains was iconic for including two sibling characters, each of whom's character arcs revolved around protecting the other, who we get shown numerous childhood flashbacks of and basically their entire story of growing up together, only for one minor villain near the end of the show to reveal they're adoptive siblings and try to use that information to pit them against each other. And the sister just goes "Yeah, so?" and does a kickflip on his face and it never comes up again.

Gonna ramble about the Trickstars CAUSE I love them!!

Something’s that I just love about Aois Trickstar deck is how connected she is to the archetype and I may be biased because I love this archetype

But Characters Like, Spectre, and Aoi who are just so closely connected to their decks in more ways then one is my favourite types of yugioh characters

Aoi shares her name with one of the two Toxic plants her Ace monster is based on “HollyHocks” the Kanji for Aoi can be used for the Word blue and is also used for the plant Hollyhock which i just love??

Also after her first duel with playmaker I loved that whole seen of the virus just corrupting her brain and the way the feathers on her wings were falling down remind me sm of her trap card trickstar Reincarnation and just the way she looked unconscious reminded me of how Holly angel looked in the trap card

We love it when the Duelist and her Ace monster know how to plate and serve it 💅✨aahxhsn

Also!! Let me scream about Dark Angel and BellaMaDonna cause those two cards are based on the exact same plant!! Belladonna!!! One of, if not, the most popular and well known DANGEROUSLY poisonous plants out there!!

It can cause:

RAPID heart beating, dilated pupils, delirium, vomiting, hallucinations, and death due to respiratory failure (basically lung failure)!!!

I ADORE the fact these two cards are based on the same plant BECAUSE, Dark Angel was made by Baira to test the ��Virus” she made to trap people’s consciousness into the VR world and the Hanoi tested it on Aoi then later on Bellamadonnas Appearence was used to defeat Baira and stop the very thing that happened to Aoi and I LOVE THAAAT!! And how here affect leaves her immune to effects cause she’s literally like an Anti-poison!!

Also!! Also!! I wanna Talk about some little fact that was probably a coincidence but if it wasn’t a coincidence then that was SO COOL

It’s about Spectre and Blue angels duel!! One of the monsters that makes an appearance in this duel is one of the Trickstars biggest support card and monster Crimson Heart! Or Bloody Mary in the Japanese!

In the duel Spectre takes control of Crimson Heart and Mama tree saves her from being attacked and destroyed which I LOVED BECAUSE!!

The Toxic flower she’s based on are The Bleeding Hearts!! And bleeding hearts are WOODLAND PLANTS!!!

Woodland plants are plants that require the Shady environment provided by- you guessed it- Trees!!!

Bleeding hearts must be planted underneath the shade of a tree in order to bloom!!! This is probably my favorite little detail in that duel!!

I know identity reveals are overdone, I know they had more important plot stuff going on, but we gotta take a second and imagine what it was like when Skye/Aoi first learned Yusaku was Playmaker.

You go to highschool. There's all the typical highschool students there, including a quiet kid who sits by himself and never talks to anyone. The closest you ever see to him socializing is the class clown talking at him while he walks away???? He doesn't have any interest in playing the Literal Only And Greatest Game Ever. He doesn't even know your school has a club for that. But one day he shows up, and he doesn't seem interested at all, despite, you know, being there. You look at his cards and another club member says they look terrible and he must be an awful duelist. He shrugs and doesn't argue this point.

He never comes back to the club again.

And then one time you sneak away from class to go fight a vigilante and get in over your head and end up falling into a coma, and this guy, who you already kinda feel bad for because of that awkward social interaction is for some reason hanging out on the roof of the school and notices your unconscious body and calls an ambulance about it. Kinda a weird life event to tie two people together, but hey, now you feel double bad about your literal only two interactions with this guy, so you see him working at a food truck one day (badly) and you figure the least you can do is go buy lunch, thank him properly.

He seems completely as anti-social as he comes across in class. The two of you exchange maybe a dozen words. How is he still employed here.

Then a few weeks later that same guy tells you he's a vigilante cyberslueth that you've been repeatedly working with as you and a few other friends/enemies of the state unravel a criminal conspiracy.
