Dad!Ao’nung x Sully!reader
IN WHICH yours and Ao’nung’s son is killed during Quaritch’s attack, but your family is here to help you pick up the pieces.
WC: 3.3k
warnings: ANGST, grief of a son and a brother, death, violence and gory injuries.
Tumblr media
2 years. The little amount of time that you had been given before Quaritch and his team came to wreak havoc amongst your family once more. It seemed like your parents killing him once had not been enough, because his appearance made him look hungry for another death. Though you were all happy now, far away from the menace of his heavy ammo and the menacing gun that was slung upon his shoulder.
The first few weeks of living within the Metkayina had been so hard for you and your family. Between Lo’ak and Kiri being treated far worse for having human features, and the hard time you and your mother were having with fitting in with their traditions. The Tsahik had not been any softer on you despite the mistreatment that your family already faced. She despised your family of ‘demons’ and probably your mother too because she was affiliated and had children with one.
Your siblings and you had found comfort within the presence of the sweet Tsireya and Rotxo. Neteyam and yourself often found yourselves laughing quietly at your obviously in-love brother. Though you couldn’t make fun of him for too long, because you too had started developing something for the local Metkayina bully.
Something about his arrogance just made him so annoying yet attractive. Maybe it was his confidence, or the way he would tease you unrelentingly. Nevertheless, you just couldn't let anyone know of your silly crush for now, because if it fell upon the ears of the future olo’eyktan, you knew that he’d never let you live it down. Weeks had passed and your interest towards the boy could only grow more and more as the days passed by.
Though now, only with the teasing remarks of your family. Neteyam was always known for the keen eye that your mother had passed down to him, and it didn’t take long for him to notice the longing stares that you would send the rude boy. Long story short, he told Lo’ak and your little brother and his humongous mouth just couldn’t keep shut. To say that your mother was disappointed in your choice of men was an understatement, but she had allowed herself to fall in love with the person that she had wanted, so why couldn’t you?
Jake was…shocked to say the least. You had never audibly expressed your interest in any boy back at home, and here you were now. Though he knew that there was nothing that he could do to stop his 18 year old daughter from pursuing her heart's desires, because he had done so with Neytiri.
Your sisters had a calmer approach about the subject, rather asking you about it during some private gossip session that you had with them.
So after many months of hidden admiration spent, you still wondered how you had managed to end up under him in the middle of the forest behind their homes. Far from reach of everyone else, in the middle of the Metkayina mating grounds. His chests heaved up and down as he regained his breath, staring down at you with his stern lustful gaze.
An accidental confession and two young adults on the run from prying eyes was all it took for the both of you to run off and bond before eywa, queues intertwined with the feeling of love running thick through both of your veins. You’d laugh at yourself months ago if you had told yourself that you even had a chance with Ao’nung, but here you were now, mated for the rest of your lives.
The walk of shame felt rewarding in some way the next day, you had proved to Ronal and Tonowari that you feared them not, even if it meant being bonded to their son. Now you were all family, if they wanted it or not. Ao’nung and you had moved into your own private marui, and you were shoved into your mother’s loving embrace one last time as you packed your things and moved into your new home. Everything was perfect at first, a feast was soon established for the news of your mateship, and soon came another for the news of your bearing.
A baby, conceived through the love that you both shared. The endless nights that you both spent hidden away from the rest of the world, tightly squeezed in each other’s embrace as you slept the night off. Many were unaccepting at first, a demon hybrid and their future olo’eyktan? How absurd. But soon everyone calmed down, and time passed faster than you would’ve liked it to.
-
Fires spread throughout the whole village, heavy flames engulfing the beautiful village in its soaring arms. When you arrived back at shore, your heart was already void of all emotions. You felt as though it was bleeding, and the death of your brother felt like the knife that poked through the midst of it. You wanted it to burn with anger towards the sky people for taking your younger brother’s life, but you just couldn’t feel anything.
The brother that you had watched being birthed, cleaned and placed wailing into your young arms had been violently taken before you. It was unfair, but he was in a better place now, away from the cruelty of this world. You couldn’t imagine how your parents felt, losing their first son before their very own eyes. How guilty your little brother must've felt for everything. Though you forced your sorrows away because you had a family of your own to attend to.
Your son was still with his caretaker, and your mate probably had wounds that needed tending. Suddenly, the acrid scent of burning hit your nostrils, making you scrunch your nose in disgust. The fumes entered through your lungs like the much wanted air, and exited like the carbon that you would need to exhale.
Your yellow eyes shone a warm amber colour as your eyes were strained amongst the fiery scene before you. The flames engulfed the stretching material of the maruis, spreading at an undying pace. You were frozen in your spot as you watched the fire turn your homes into remainders of what once was. Your mind raced as you imagined the worst of all scenarios.
You flinched upon contact, elbowing hardly whoever had just grabbed you by the elbows. You turned around to meet their eyes, distress swirling in your very own. Ao’nung nearly fell back at your unwanted assault, huffing as you elbow left quite the fuzzy feeling in his stomach. Not the good kind of feeling. He looked at you before reaching for you once more, though you were unresponsive to his touch.
Once the smell of burning reached his nose, his attention was completely retracted from your frozen form. He suddenly urged forwards, grabbing your hand harshly into his as he ran towards the maruis. He ran faster than he had ever done, because there was a nagging feeling of fear lodged deep inside his heart.
You could feel your heart physically stop as you arrived in front of your shared marui, the stretchy material of your home now falling apart under effect of the burning. What scared you the most was the silence. As much as it pains you to say, you would’ve rather heard the painful yells of your baby than the wavering silence.
Without hesitation, Ao’nung entered the marui first. He had little to no reaction as a piece of burning material from the roof fell ungracefully over his arm, leaving a small and ugly mark behind. Him halting in his steps was enough to bring you back to life and rushing to the scene besides him.
Though the sight before you was what no mother would ever wish to see. The woman that was once protecting your son now laid lifeless besides the weaved crib that was made from dried sea plants. The smell of death was atrocious, and you had immediately known that she had not died due to the unfortunate fires. She had been murdered by those sky demons.
You had no care nor time to turn her around to investigate her cause of death. Though you were happy that you didn’t see the violent wound that ran down her back, a long cut that passed from the top to the bottom of her spine. Her blood seeped to the floor and tainted the material, and you could only wish then that it wasn’t Aytan’s, your son.
She was bare and open from the back for anyone to see if they dared to flip her around. You were glad that you didn’t need to, because the sight of her guts spilling all over your feet would’ve surely made you regurgitate your meal all over her mutilated body.
Instead your eyes panned for painfully long on your son that laid still in his crib. Void of any movement or life, you felt as though now you would puke.
His skin was cursed with burn marks that overtook nearly half of his body. He looked so miserable and even if he was still alive at the moment, you would wonder if saving him would do him any good. The once soft baby skin now looked roughy and flaky.
He was still so small that he could barely fit into the two palms of his father’s hands, but he was big enough to fit perfectly in your smaller ones.
Perfectly safe and healthy in his mothers embrace is where he should’ve been right now, not like this.
You looked over to Ao’nung for some unreasoned confirmation that your son was truly dead, but he wasn’t even looking at you. Instead, his lifeless eyes hovered over the charred child that laid innocently in his crib. He couldn’t even make a move to grab the baby, because he was frozen in anguish.
You couldn’t even remember when you had started crying, or when your cries had turned into desperate sobs and prayers towards Eywa. You couldn’t even remember when Ao’nung’s family had found the both of you safe and sound into the marui that once called a home, now in shambles beneath your feet. All you remembered was grasping your son with all force that you had left and praying to the Great-Mother down on your knees, and the painful tears that rolled down your husband’s cheeks.
Though there weren’t more than 3 tears that he had shed, it was 3 too much. He wouldn’t have cried if those damned demons didn’t follow your family here, but yet there he was. He too couldn’t even remember when his mother had embraced him, but she had done so.
There were so many things that the both of you had regretted not doing on that night. Like staying back to protect your son by yourselves. You both resented yourselves for the fact that the last time the both of you would ever hold him this way would be at his funeral, followed by your brother’s.
-
Everything was quiet since that night, at least for you. It was too much loss for your fragile heart to comprehend all at once. Was your brother’s death not enough, have they had to take your innocent son’s life as well. Your poor son that had just been presented to the clan
You were scared. Scared of so many things that you could not control. You feared what Ao’nung thought of you, did he hate you for not being there with you son? Maybe if you were, you could’ve protected him unlike the incompetent babysitter that you had left him with. No, you shook your head from those nasty thoughts. It was wrong of you to think ill of that woman, she had been present with your son until her unfortunate death.
Your fears turned into trepidation as your husband made his way towards you, a plate of fish in his wobbly hands.
Ao’nung was so angry at many things. He was angry at himself for not being there with his son. He felt mad at the poor woman for not having the ability to protect his innocent son. Though most of all, he felt vexed at you for freezing up on that day. He told himself that perhaps if you had not taken so much time to snap back to your senses, your son would somehow still be here.
He knew that it was wrong of him to think like this, he knew that even if you had acted faster, his son would still be laying unresponsive at his return. He knew that feeling angry at his innocent wife was wrong, that none of this had to do with you being at fault. He hates himself for having these unwanted feelings and thoughts, and at times Ao’nung truly wishes that he could silence his subconscious.
He hated himself for internally blaming you even after watching you drown in remorse. Even after watching you sob over your dead son’s frail body. And even though it had been hours since the funeral of your brother and son, your tears still ran freely on your delicate cheeks.
They stained your dark skin and they strained your eyes that could do nothing to stop the flow. Ao’nung felt his guilt triple in size as he sat next to you, your body instinctively shaking as he engulfed you in his warm embrace. For he had always been your pillar of reconfort and the person that you allowed yourself to feel vulnerable within.
He hushed you gently as you sobbed into his arms, his heart shattering once more as you cried to him. You were unsoothable but he hadn’t complained once, instead he gave you the comfort that you seeked so much. You felt guilty too, because you were not the only person going through grief. Who would be there to comfort Ao’nung when you were crying in his embrace?
Though when you made your worries audible, he was quick to shut them down. He wanted to be strong for you, for his family and mostly for himself. He told you not to worry, that he was okay as long as you were and soon your insecurities of him hating you vanished through the soft breeze. Ao’nung didn’t hesitate to remind you of how strong your love was and that you’d both get through it.
You both slept with heavy hearts at night, unable to close your aching eyelids until they fell on their own with exhaustion. His arms never left your form and you slept with your head on his chest, finding comfort in the sound of his beating heart.
-
You felt jealous at first, heart black and full of envy as you watched young mothers with their children. Hell, even the older mothers made your heart clench with resentment. And though you knew it was selfish of you to despise mothers for simply existing, there was little that you could do to make the feeling go away.
You couldn’t face the sight of the young children that trudged behind their mothers and soon it began affecting your Tsahik performances. How could you heal children and mothers and assist labourers when you couldn’t even stand the sight of them anymore.
It was unfair, so unfair for everyone but you knew that it was the way that life went. You knew that you couldn’t keep on closing yourself off like this, that you had to be accepting of what had happened and face reality.
So accepting was what you had done. Slowly by slowly, you have started rebuilding your life with the help of people around you. Your mother was the most understanding person, because she had lost so much already. She had lost her son just as you had, but she had never once reprimanded you for grieving. She had never forced you to speak up to her, she had never resented you for feeling the way you did.
You had learnt that it was not the end of the world, and that one day you’d be better, you’d all be better. Neteyam and Aytan’s death were not in vain, for the Great-Mother always had a plan for everyone. If it was her will, then so be it, there was nothing that you could do to undo what was done anyways.
Tuk had been the sweetest girl during that moment, and it never failed to bring tears in your eyes at how understanding she was. She was so young and you were sad that a part of her youth was taken away from her because of this ongoing war.
You could never thank your brother and father enough for being there for you despite the guilt that weighed them down, pushing so hard that they could only bear to stand on their knees.
Though solace could only work in both ways, and you were just as there for them as they were there for you. Aytan was just as much their family member as Neteyam was, and they were allowed to grieve the loss of your son as well. It took time for you all to find peace within this feeling of forfeiture, but you all knew that one day, things would be okay.
-
You watched as Ao’nung made his way towards his people, a prideful smile adorning his face as his gaze turned to you. His eyes were full of adoration as he stared at you, then to the little bundle of joy and baby fat that was lying comfortably in his arms.
He stood before his people clad in his traditional clothes that were used during feasts and announcements of this type.
The child in his arms stirred awake at the disturbance, whining slightly for her mother. The sound reached your ears and for a second you worried for your daughter, but you knew that nothing bad could happen to her as long as she was in her father’s arms.
The child's stomachs growled loudly for a second and you had to bring your hand in front of your mouth to stifle your laughter. She had just been fed a few minutes before this and yet her hunger caught up to her once more. A trait that she had acquired from his father, you had to cook 3 times your own fish portion to properly feed his warrior’s stomach.
Ura was a child that would soon grow to walk on clumsy legs, a child that was yours. Though a part of yourself was gone forever, tearing a piece of your heart along with it. You knew that the pain of losing your first child would never really go away, but you'd always have your family to help you get through it. You had a wonderful mate, that you relied your entire life within his hands, and a family that knows the ways past your heart.
You watched as Ao’nung raised your 3 weeks old daughter into the air, her chubby little arms raising in amusement. The sound of her name pierced through your ears and soon the chants began to fill your heart with joy and pride. You couldn’t help the warm smile that overtook your features as you watched your daughter being presented to the entire clan, your family close behind you.
Your mother held a hand over her chest, where her heart was. Her smile mirrored yours and the pride on her face could compete versus the one that she felt when you were the one being shown to her clan. Your father and siblings were close to her. Lo’ak now shone with new tribal tattoos, ones similar to yours as they dipped from his chin and all the way down his leg.
His mateship with Tsireya was soon made public, and you felt a pang in your heart when you knew that you couldn’t tease him about it with Neteyam anymore. Though you swallowed your sorrows, feeling happy for your baby brother. Your sister in law stood besides your brother, her eyes glued to her newborn niece. A child that she knew that she just absolutely would spoil when she would learn to stand on her own feet.
Perhaps things would get hard at times, and the reminiscences of your son would be permanent, but you had a loving family that would always help you fill the void.

KISS IT BETTER !
Tumblr media
ao'nung x metkayina reader.
a/n — sorry guys it's been a reallyyy rough past few days some shit has gone down but here's a lil drabble while i finish a fic 🫶 / also they're like 18 in this for sake of plot !
To say you and Ao'nung didn't get along would be an understatement.
You two always argued, no matter how little or how big. From the way your hair was done, to who couldn't hold their breath as long, who was better on an ilu, you name it.
Though, despite you not being able to see eye to eye with him, you were always close with his younger sister. You were attached to the hip ever since children, and you spent practically your whole lives with each other, pretty much growing up together. You also grew close with her family, spending many dinners over at her marui.
So of course, you always had to see her brother.
Tsireya wasn't blind. Pretty much anyone could see the way you two acted around each other. And if they couldn't see it, they could certainly hear it. There wasn't a minute you could be in the same vicinity as each other and not throw insults at each other.
However, nobody really knows how or why you're like that. It's almost as if you were born into the world and just decided to hate each other.
And so you're sitting in between Tsireya's legs, her doing a new hairstyle for your hair and you whining about her brother once more. "I just don't get it," you complained, huffing in annoyance. "He really thinks he can insult me with a face like that! 'You'll never be able to get a boyfriend looking like that, y/n'," you gruffly mimicked, inaccurately impersonating his voice. "As if he's any better! Like you're the one who can't keep a girlfriend. He's projecting, I'm telling you."
Pulling extra tight on a certain braid you yelped, glaring over your shoulder. "Y/n, you seriously have a problem," Tsireya stated, sighing. "I mean if you really hate my brother so much, just don't talk to him. You both are around each other a lot for people who claim to hate each other so much."
"It's not my fault!" You quickly replied. "I swear, he's everywhere. I want to go clear my mind and go for a swim? He's already there. I want to feed the ilus? Apparently he was planning on going on a ride. I want to stop by and have dinner with my best friend? He-"
"Lives there, Y/n. He lives there," Tsireya finished for you. "I'm just saying. He may be my brother, but if he pisses you off that much you don't have to talk to him. He's good at riling people up. Especially you." She commented, finishing your hair and patting your shoulder lightly for you to turn around.
"He could piss anyone off with the things he says," You grumbled, shoulders drooping when you fell under Tsireya's disapproving gaze. "Fine. I'll try to not let him get to me. Starting now."
"Oh that's lovely, because he's right behind you."
"What-"
"Hi sister," he paused, eyes glancing to you in distaste. "Y/n."
"Ao'nung." You acknowledged him blandly, trying to take your friend's advice and not be disturbed by his mere presence.
"Mother wants you home for dinner," He continued, letting out a sigh before going on. "They invited you too." He finished, not sparring a glance your way before turning around and walking back.
"That went better than expected." Tsireya grinned, grabbing your arm and taking you to her own marui.
"Wait until dinner."
Dinner was going better than expected. You and Ao'nung hadn't argued yet, considering you chose to ignore him and he did the same. Your parents had joined the dinner as well, so you had no other choice but to be respectful.
Your calm nature soon disappeared as you heard the words coming from your parents mouths.
"What?" You exclaimed in disbelief, Tsireya sitting next to you with a shocked expression.
"Really, we think it's for the best."
"No offense or anything, but have you met Ao'nung? I can barely stay in the same room with him, nevertheless spend the rest of my life with him!" You complained, ignoring the stern looks from your parents. "It won't work. Me and Ao'nung, we don't work well together."
"For once, I agree." The boy finally spoke, not looking up from the table.
"Y/n, Ao'nung, I know this is unexpected, but we've all talked about it. You would make a great mate for Ao'nung. We'd like you two to be mated soon before Ao'nung chooses a girl us or the clan would not approve of."
You noticed how his jaw clenched at the comment, yet he stayed silent. You closed your eyes, trying to accept your fate. When you both fell silent, everyone got up and started to exit the room. "We'll give you two some privacy."
You watched as they all left out the marui, turning towards the male. "Why didn't you say anything?"
"It's my mother, I doubt anything I would've said would have made a difference."
"Of course it would! You're her son!"
"You're just so stubborn, aren't you?" Ao'nung suddenly shouted, standing up now. "Thinking you can have everything your way? We have duties, y/n. Grow up."
"Clearly, I'm the only one who's thinking rationally right now! How can you be willing to spend the rest of your life with someone you can't stand?"
"Well like it or not, it's happening. Deal with it, because you're not going to change our parents' minds."
"I can't believe you," you scoffed. "I hope they don't expect me to love you. I can't see who would." You walked out furiously, stomping back towards your own marui.
"Oh, you're one to talk!"
The next few days you two kept your separate ways, but both of you knew your parents wouldn't let it stay like that. They'd practically set up a date for you guys, claiming it's so you could 'settle the feud'.
So you woke up, already in a bad mood, putting minimal effort into getting ready. You headed outside your marui, grumbling what sounded like a farewell to your parents, blood boiling at the sight of the boy who was waiting for you on the beach.
"Y/n." He gruffly greeted you, not meeting your eye.
"Ao'nung." You acknowledged him back, mind drifting back to the other night. Were you too harsh with your words? It was possible you could've gotten caught up in the heat of the moment, and if you were forced to spent the rest of your life with him, you should at least try to be civil.
"...how are you?" You inwardly cringed at yourself, making an awkward attempt to make conversation.
He sent a questioning look your way, realizing what you were doing. He almost wanted to laugh at how out of place you looked. He decided to play along, for whatever reason. "Okay. You?"
"I'm good."
The both of you didn't talk much for the rest of the day, but you didn't argue either, so maybe you were showing signs of improvement. You walked along the beach quietly, the occasional tight-lipped smile, or a hum in response to one of your or his attempts to make some small talk.
Your hangouts usually went like that, you'd greet each other and walk, tension so thick you could cut it with a knife. You were too scared to say anything about it, or change the newly made routine, until Ao'nung seemingly had enough.
"Y/n," he sighed out tiredly, stopping and turning to face you fully. "This isn't helping us at all. All we're trying to do is not argue every time we're around each other. We're not fixing anything, hell, we're probably making it worse. Even if we can't love each other, shouldn't we be able to get to know one another?"
You stood silent for a moment, considering his offer. "I hate it when you're right," you deadpanned, dropping the 'nice' act. "It's just so irregular. Why would I want to be stuck with you?"
"Cmon, I struck peace and you're insulting me?" He teased, flashing a rare grin to you.
"Stop smiling, people are gonna start thinking you want to be around me." You told him, walking off.
Ao'nung went after you, chuckling to himself. "I won't make it a habit then!"
To everyone's surprise, you were finally starting to get along. You acted like friends, even if neither of you would necessarily admit it. You were spending your time with Tsireya, deeming you'd spent too much time with her brother.
"I can't believe I actually saw you smiling in the vicinity of Ao'nung." She teased, laughing once you rolled your eyes.
"Oh shut up. We're basically going to be with each other for eternity, we had to stop hating each other at some point."
"He was talking about you the other day at dinner, actually. If I didn't know any better I'd say he's taken a liking to you."
"Absolutely not!" You denied, shaking your head. "We're not like that. Like at all. We're just friends now, okay? We don't see each other that way."
"Whatever you say."
What the two of you didn't notice, however, was that the boy heard the two of you talking, heart slightly sinking. Could you really not tell how he felt?
And oddly enough, he felt even more determined to prove how he did.
To your shock, Ao'nung started making advances towards you during your scheduled hang outs. They were subtle, but you noticed the slight flirting, or how his touch would linger on you longer than usual.
You didn't think much of it however, considering you just went from enemies to friends in the span of maybe two weeks. You were right to do so, when you spotted him with another girl one day.
When you first saw them, you really could've cared less. Ao'nung was popular, and knew many people. If he had friends who were girls, it didn't matter. Everyone knew you were each others promised mates, and the word quickly spread since people knew of your dislike for each other.
You trusted Ao'nung, he was not only your betrothed but your duties were to each other, and he wasn't dumb enough to try and change that.
At least you thought.
Their second interaction, you saw the same girl, Mau. She was a sweet girl, you knew her through Tsireya. You watched quietly from afar as the two talked animatedly, large smiles and their laughter heard from where you stood. You hid behind a smaller palm tree, it's leaves shielding you from their view.
You couldn't quite hear what their conversation was, so you settled for just watching. You were shocked when she pressed a kiss to his cheek, and how he turned purple in response. You denied how you felt your heart drop to your stomach, and deemed that their conversation should be private and hurried to leave.
In the midst of rushing out you accidentally walked right into one of the leaves, your lip getting cut in the process. "Oh, fuck." You cursed underneath your breath, hoping no one could see you leave. You sprinted away to another part of the beach, moving over to the marui near the ilus.
Ao'nung squinted his eyes at the sight of someone running away, thinking it oddly resembled you. A wave of adrenaline quickly hit him when he realized you might have seen Mau, and he jumped up in panic. "I'm so sorry, I have to go." He excused himself, rushing after you.
He found you with the ilus, smiling when he heard you talking nonsense to them. He cleared his throat, "You seriously have got to make some new friends."
You froze at his voice, almost turning around but realizing he'd see the wound on your lip. You stayed in place, back turned to him as you kept feeding the creatures. "Don't be salty I have more friends than you, even if they can't talk."
"In your dreams, hun," He teased, sitting down next to you, confused when you turned away from him. Concerned, and a little scared you saw his previous interaction, his head followed yours, trying to meet your eyes. "What's wrong?"
You pursed your lips, turning around and eyes widening when you realized how close his face was to yours. Afraid of talking and showing him your cut you only shrugged, shaking your head.
"Why are you holding your lips like that?" He questioned, making you hot with panic. "It makes you look even more stupid."
"Oh just shut up." You mumbled, figuring there was no way out of this. You lowered your head, but not before he could see your wound.
"What happened?"
You really just wanted to let the ocean swallow you whole.
"I ran into a tree."
"While eavesdropping?" He laughed, seeing the way your head quickly perked up, the caught look on your face.
"I didn't- I mean-"
"Oh don't worry, I know you were just questioning my loyalty. I mean with a face like this, there's loads of girls after me. Had to break many hearts knowing I was promised to you."
"Keep telling yourself that. And if I was testing your loyalty, you definitely failed. Not that I mind, but who lets other girls kiss them when they're promised to someone else?"
"If you're jealous, just say that," he simply shrugged, smirking at you. "I turned Mau down, by the way. Told her I was already to be mated with another."
"Oh," you couldn't help but let out a breath of relief. "Your parents will be happy to hear that."
Rolling his eyes at your ability to not take a hint, he only sighed. "Yeah, sure."
Ao'nung then refocused on your lips, looking at the cut. "You know, we should really do something about that."
"It doesn't hurt that much."
"You should let me kiss it better."
"What?" You exclaimed, looking at him incredulously.
"You heard me."
Not bothering to hear your response his lips pressed against yours gently, in fear of making the cut any worse. His hand came to rest against your jaw as his lips moved slowly. You felt him smile against you before he quickly pecked your lips again, pulling away with a smug look. "Feel any better?"
"I'm not sure, you might have to kiss it better again."

HII!!, i just randomly thought of this, but have you watched the barbie movie? and yk the song with Billie eilish "what was I made for" like what if reader was in a toxic relationship before their relationship with this new character(could be neteyam or ao'nung, or your choice of character) where readers ex boyfriend didn't care for readers feelings, and is really toxic is all, so reader hides her emotions/trauma from her new lover, like with the lines in the song "im sad again, don't tell my boyfriend, it's not what his made for" and so readers new lover finds out about this and like reassures her that she can always share her feelings with them and ykyk, Anyways It's just a thought, you don't have to do it, oh but please do😭

You watched as Ao’nung soared through the water with his friends, riding their skimwigs as they passed a ball back and forth, playing a traditional game of water polo. You would’ve been playing, or at least in the line with the other girls who were bound to play the next round but a nauseating feeling has been bothering you for the past few days.
It had been at least half a year since you and your family sought Uturu in Awa’atlu. Being raised in a forest and suddenly being stripped of your home in a matter of hours made it hard to adjust. Yes, you should’ve been used to it now, but even after all this time you just…couldn't connect.
You connected well with Ao’nung, and you loved him, but not everyone supported the relationship. He was the Olo’eyktans son, and you were the demon's daughter. Safe to say it caught everyone, including you, off guard when he began to pursue you. It also caused a little drama between you and the other girls on the reef. You didn’t know much about his dating history, but allegedly there was a singular girl he was supposed to court. Especially since he would be Olo’eyktan in the future if not Tsireya. That girl hated you, and she didn’t try to hide it either.
You felt them staring, the girl and her clique staring as you sat alone in the sand watching your boyfriend. Their eyes made the sun beam harder, and the heat of it all made your head pound. You wanted Ao’nung to come over. To whisk you away or to tell them off, but you repressed yourself.
After all, you were probably being emotional. Just like your last boyfriend said. It was normal for him to berate you after pulling him away from his “duties”. He dumped you after a year or so for being “too clingy” and “too emotional” and said that it was probably your fathers demon blood that made you "do that stuff" since the Sully family was full of “freaks”.
This did not slide with your parents at all. You begged them to not escalate the situation but they just couldn't help it. Jake began putting the boy through more rigorous training and your mother became more vocal with her distaste of making him a warrior. In the moment, they might have thought they were helping, but in reality it only supported your exes claims.
So when you got here to Awa’atlu and got labeled as ‘freaks’ and ‘demons’ it brought you back to what you already were back at home.
You stood and began walking away from the beach, feeling more self conscious than usual. You hated the feeling, and when you were left alone for too long your mind began to wander. The subconscious thought of you and Ao’nungs relationship not ending on good terms haunted you, and you were desperate to rid yourself of those thoughts. You found yourself lingering and strolling over to the tropical first of Awa’atlu, the closest to home you could get. Your fingertips brushed over the coiled flowers and brushes, giving you that sense of fulfillment.
You and Kiri had a similar connection and love for nature, but lately she’s been getting her stimulation from the sea.
Sitting on the ground, and laying against the damp grass, you looked at the sky that was bordered by palm trees and distant birds flying. You tried to manipulate your reality by imagining the thicker forestry and the sounds of animals hooting and hollering in the distance, but you couldn't.
The trees felt like a dark hole. A circle of a place you could never call home. You sighed deeply, and tried to make most of what you had.
Not even an hour in, you heard the crunching of grass get louder. You internally groaned, knowing it was Ao’nung.
Without a word, he laid next to you, staring up into the sky as you were.
“You gotta stop running off on me like that.” He said silently.
“I didn’t mean to…I just…got distracted.”
Ao'nung felt a pit in his stomach himself. He knew you were lying. Even though he teased and joked around with you a lot. He knew it was time to sit and talk to you.
“You’re lying.” He said bluntly. “You’re depressed.”
You said nothing, letting his words sink in. You’d come to that conclusion a while ago, but you avoided saying it out loud.
“Is it because of me?”
“No.” You said immediately.
“It's the reef. Isn't it? You miss your home.”
“I do miss my home.” You nodded.
The both of you fell silent again. Waiting for the other to say something. Neither one of you were good with stuff like this.
“Why do you never talk to me?” He asked. “You never talk about your life in the forest.”
“It would be just as bad as talking about my experience here. I don’t fit in anywhere.”
Ao’nung let out a chuckle. “Without the angsty teen typical ‘I don’t fit in” bullshit.” He started, which caused you to let out a genuine laugh. Maybe it was corny. “I want you to tell me. Life before the reef. Life before me.”
“Are you sure you want to hear it?”
Ao'nung rolled over to turn to you and you did the same, looking over at him.
“Of course I want to hear Y/n.” He said with furrowed eyebrows. “I want to hear every little stupid idea and thought in your head. You need to let me in. I want you to let me in.”
You felt a pang of guilt surge through your body. This was the first time he…or anyone has said anything like that to you before. Here you were, treating him like your ex where you could share nothing personal, and this entire time he wanted you to.
“Well now I feel bad.” You mumbled.
He whirled his fingers around a strand of your hair and smiled. “You don’t need to. I know how anxious you get.”
With a deep breath, you began rambling. Talking more than you had in the past year. You told him everything, from sleeping in bioluminescent gardens and very public fights with your ex. You talked about the events leading up to arriving at Awa'atlu, along with a sprinkle of your dad’s backstory.
You told him about how you felt ashamed to be his girlfriend, especially with how the other people on the reef felt about your family.
In all, you probably talked his ear off for an hour. But the craziest thing is that he sat and listened to every word. Nodding along, even interjecting a few times to validate your feelings and thoughts.
With each word and look of affirmation you felt a large weight lifting off of your shoulders, even relieving pressure you didn’t even know was there. Your chest wasn't tight, and you didn’t feel nauseous.
“See? That didn’t kill you.” Ao’nung said with a soft smile. “We’re not all dicks you know.” He placed his hand on the dip of your waist. “You just got paired with a shitty first boyfriend…and it sucked.”
You bit your bottom lip to stop it from trembling, listening to Ao’nung give you the much needed reassurance. “I may not be able to save you or help you with every issue you come across on the reef, but I'll do my best to protect you from anything I can control.” He patted your waist.
After talking, especially now. You felt pretty stupid that you had pre-judged your boyfriend and thought that he wouldn't care. This whole time, all you wanted was someone to understand you. He most likely noticed you were falling into a pit before you did yourself.
“Hey,” He poked your forehead. “We build from here. We both have no idea what we’re doing.”
“You definitely don't.” You giggled.
He flicked your nose before standing and pulling you upwards, pulling you to god knows where.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ao'nung / !fem!Metkayina!Reader
Summary:  When the one that got away is finally moving on and found a potential mate, Ao‘nung has the terrible realization how much he messed it all up.

↳ No y/n mentions, aged-up characters
Word Count:  4.8k
Notes:  Inspired by this gorgeous, gorgeous render from my stars and moon @cinetrix who continues to be the best of friends to me, even though we are so far apart at the moment! 😭💫 And thank you for voting for this song as the inspo! It's probably the saddest/ most desperate option and I am here for it.
'Cause sometimes I look in her eyes And that's where I find a glimpse of us And I try to fall for her touch But I'm thinking of the way it was Said I'm fine and said I moved on I'm only here passing time in her arms Hoping I'll find A glimpse of us
"Ao'nung," the pretty girl in his lap practically purred, stroking his cheek with a finger. She smelled of fermented fruit juices and the smoke of the bonfire in front of them, and Ao'nung found that the combination was as good as any. It would do, she would do. At least for the night, or perhaps even a little while after that. "You seem distracted."
"Do I?" He asked dispassionately, gripping her hips and thighs and pulling her closer. She giggled a little, flush high on her cheekbones, and he smiled back before sucking into her soft neck. The girl, (what was her name again? Sxeylu? Sxayla?) was nice enough, with beautiful long legs and hair and that sparkle that most unmated women of his clan got whenever they looked at him these days.
Ao'nung knew what all of them saw: He was young, a future Olo'eyktan, strong. Handsome. Not as ill-tempered as he'd been in his youth. Tattooed all over, for his many victories and successful hunts.
A great catch, in other words.
But whenever he looked at any of the women his mother shoved at him in regular intervals, or the girls that worked up the courage to approach him as Sxulay had done... Ao'nung felt nothing. There was no spark, no real connection beyond physical attraction or sometimes a mutual friend, and he always ended up letting them down more or less harshly.
You already had it, a quiet voice in the darkest corner of his mind whispered. With her.
Shut up, Ao'nung told himself angrily, letting up from his attention to the girl's body in irritation.
Ending things with her had been inevitable. He simply hadn't been ready for the kind of love and quiet devotion she was willing to give him, to have someone wait when he got home or fuss over him when he got sick each time the flowering season started.
And she wasn't the kind of girl that waited around for a silly boy of nineteen to make up his mind.
It had been all or nothing, and Ao'nung had chosen to stay unattached. Thinking that all relationships felt like that, that his future mate would walk into his life one day, perfectly moulded to his desires and expectations.
Hoping that, maybe, she'd still be there when he felt ready.
Stupid, that same voice whispered, and he couldn't even argue against it this time.
Ao'nung gazed up into the blue eyes of Sxilan'i, searching. She looked happy, arms thrown around his neck in obvious triumph, festive paint smeared over her cheeks and collarbones from their earlier kissing.
But her eyes looked more like an early morning sky instead of the deep drop into the dark, open waters beyond the reef.
There was no wildness there, no mischief or exasperation.
Her eyes had never let him go whenever he dared to drown in them for longer than a moment. Pupils dilated as they flickered down to his mouth, and he would lean in to steal a kiss only for her to turn her head away with a laugh and Do you think you deserve one after the poor catch from today?
Ao'nung would have laughed as well and pulled her closer by the waist, licking his lips in that way he knew caught her off-guard each time. He'd whisper something inappropriate in her ear or sweep her off her feet so she would cling to him and scream, maybe hit his shoulder-
"What the fuck."
It wasn't a question, merely a heartfelt statement, ripped straight from his soul.
What. The actual. Fuck.
It wasn't uncommon for them to cross paths, even though she was from a neighbouring clan and spent little time in Awa'atlu these days. He'd see her from a distance, and she'd give him a tired wave before moving on, taking a little chunk of his stupid heart with her.
It had been years and still, he thought of it, thought of her.
How her warm skin felt against him, as they stared up at the trillions of stars that orbited around them.
How she tasted.
How her face had contorted into true anger, that one time he'd drunkenly suggested getting back together again - furious to the point of shouting Ao'nung back into his apparent place.
You left me, she'd said as he flinched away from her trembling body. For some easy fun, or whatever the reason was. It keeps changing every time we talk, anyway. Leave me be.
He'd taken his wounded pride and moved on.
But in his mind, she'd still been his. His to hold, his to win back one day when enough time had passed. His to keep and start a family with.
Ao'nung had never considered her with another man before, it felt preposterous to even think about.
But there she was, with a guy he'd seen Lo'ak hang out with several times in the past, smiling and beautiful.
The girl draped across his thighs yelped when he shoved her off none too gently, rising with clenched fists. He stared at the couple across the bonfire, flames blue from the driftwood as it danced between them. The only thing keeping him from launching a punch into the other guy's smug face.
He was halfway around the pit and people milling about, several calling out to him as he passed when Ao'nung slowed his steps, taking a few deep breaths to calm the rage burning hot in his belly.
What, exactly, was he about to do? Run up on a girl (his girl, his!), that he hadn't properly spoken to in months and beat up the man she had shown up with? Make a scene, when everybody in his clan considered him calm and level-headed these days?
It had been years since whatever was between them had started, and as far as Ao'nung was concerned, it wasn't over. Not entirely, at least.
"Fuck," he swore under his breath, redirecting his steps towards the musicians and the food, thinking hard, sweat beading on his brow.
Where was all of this shit coming from? Why was the sight of her with someone else catching him off-guard? Truly, he probably should have expected it sooner or later, and he felt dumb for never considering it.
Was the panic rising in his chest due to the reminder that she saw him as nothing more than a memory now... or was it the knowledge that he had to commit to formally pursuing her if he ever wanted to have a chance again?
Ao'nung glanced over, only to find her standing alone, looking around. He grabbed a few leaf parcels filled with rice and fish and shouldered his way through the crowd, nodding and grinning through his teeth whenever anyone called out to him. Rotxo slapped his back on his way through, but then followed his gaze and raised his eyebrows.
"Really, bro?" Rotxo shouted in Ao'nung's ear to be heard over the music and laughter. He shrugged his shoulders, fingers clenching and unclenching around the food. The need to catch her alone was growing by the second, just as fast as the chances of the new guy returning to her.
"Just wanted to say hello," he replied, and his best friend rolled his eyes towards the night sky in exasperation.
"Give it up," he advised, seriously, slapping his back again. "You could have any girl here, but whenever-"
Ao'nung pushed past him in annoyance, leaving Rotxo to gape after him, but he had no time for his opinion right now.
As soon as he was close enough to touch, he bumped into her with his elbow gently, startling her for a second.
"Hello, my sweet koaktutral," Ao'nung grinned broadly, then shoved her portion of the snacks at her. "Don't you look pretty tonight?"
She really did, hair shiny and braided in two thick strands down her head, ears shimmering from precious metal rings and shells. Deep ocean eyes swallowed him in an instant, and Ao'nung felt a sudden flush of nervousness rising in his cheeks. Now that he was here, talking to her after so long, he had no clue what to say.
She groaned.
"I told you how much I hate that stupid nickname," her sharp voice cut across him, and Ao'nung felt his shoulders relax from the familiar tone. "But I'll allow it since you brought me food. I'm starving."
"You always are," he scoffed, bumping their arms together. "How have you been? I didn't know you'd be here tonight."
She tore off the soft layer of leaves with her sharp teeth like a savage, (cute, his mind screamed) and stuffed the whole rice ball in her mouth. He watched her eat with a smile, then unwrapped his own, much slower.
"I wasn't planning on coming," she finally said, crossing her arms over her chest while her eyes swept over the crowd. "My tsakarem training is coming to an end, and my mother plans to take a less involved role soon, so it's been a lot. But T'xavtey said I should relax more, so here we are."
Having a name to match the face made it worse somehow, and Ao'nung ground his teeth hard before putting on an expression of fake surprise.
"Oh? You brought someone?"
Her gaze shot back over to his, searching.
"Yes," she said slowly, shifting her weight. "He's- we've been- we met last month."
"That's," Ao'nung started but the lie died on his tongue as soon as it formed. He would not tell her how great he thought it was, no fucking way. "Unexpected."
Her eyes narrowed and she popped another rice ball into her mouth.
"Unexpected? More like long overdue if you ask me."
His blood ran hot at the challenge in her gaze, and he tried to calm his racing heart. The underlying accusation was plain as day to him, though he suspected any bystanders would not have detected anything off in her remark.
"I just never saw you with someone else."
"Just you?" She scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest and glaring up at him.
"Yes," Ao'nung answered simply. Truthful. "Just me."
For a moment, she seemed taken aback, hand grabbing her own throat as if to protect herself. Then, the anger hit.
"That's rich, coming from the guy that has a new woman every other month. That flaunts how desirable and unattainable he is at any given chance. I'd bet on my songcord that the girl glaring spears through my heart is the flavour of the night?"
She jerked her head over his shoulder, but he didn't even bother looking. She was probably right.
"Listen-"
"No, I don't think I will, thank you. Have a good night, Ao'nung."
And with that, she whirled around and stomped off, kicking up sand as she went. He leaned his head back for a moment, exhaled sharply through his nose and then ran after her, catching her by the arm just as she reached the shoreline.
Her hiss was so violent and familiar that it twisted his insides into knots.
"I didn't mean it!" Ao'nung snarled.
She ripped herself free, then pushed her finger right into his sternum, teeth flashing.
"That," she said. "Is precisely why I can't be around you anymore. You say stuff you don't mean and then you backpedal! We haven't spoken in ages, you never even acknowledge me anymore and then you spew some rubbish about 'being the one' after I tell you I finally found someone new?"
Ao'nung ground his teeth. He'd missed every part about her, even her combativeness, but he couldn't remember ever getting a dressing down quite like this one either.
"So," he hissed back at her, gently grabbing the finger still drilling a hole through him and capturing her much smaller hand in his. "You really want to tell me that you never think about me, is that it?"
They stared at each other, and he recklessly, foolishly, considered kissing her right then and there.
"Oh, Ao'nung," she sighed, shoulders slumping suddenly. The look of pity hit him like a slap to the face. "Of course I still think about you. You were my first boyfriend and it felt special while it lasted. But we are grown now, and I have to make decisions that will be good for not only me but my clan as well. Chasing the affection of an emotionally unavailable man is not high on my priority list. And besides," she said, gently. "I already agreed to T'xavtey's courtship."
"Courtship," Ao'nung echoed hollowly. "You intend to take him as your mate then?"
"That's usually what that means, yes."
They stared at each other for a moment longer, then she patted his hand and untangled her fingers from his.
"What you feel now is how I felt the first couple of times I saw you with someone else. It'll pass, I promise. No hard feelings, and we can act like this conversation never happened."
I don't want it to pass, Ao'nung wanted to scream but all he managed was a faint nod. Her warm hand brushed along his cheek for a moment, affectionate but little more than a fleeting touch. The earrings looped through her skin glimmered from the faraway light of the moon.
"Don't worry 'Nungie," she whispered, not meeting his eyes. "It'll all work out."
Tumblr media
Things were not working out. At all.
Ever since that night at the beach, Ao'nung had to deal with an onslaught of memories, suppressed and bottled up. Most surrounded her, naturally, but some were centered around himself. How he had treated girls, how he had thought himself above feeling anything deeper than lust and companionship with anybody.
The knowledge made him anxious, made him swim and dive for hours on end until his lungs burned and his stomach cramped from hunger.
Shame. Shame was the most prevalent emotion during all of this, and bitterness.
He tried to respect her wish, act like their conversation had never happened but it was impossible. Ao'nung couldn't explain it to himself. They had talked since their break-up, had been to the same parties and overlapping clan gatherings. But not once, not ever, had he felt this way.
Jealousy clawed itself up his throat whenever he saw her and the man that courted her. Ao'nung would swallow back any comments and hisses, lock it all up tight until he was beneath the waves again, where he was safe to scream out his frustration until he ran into the risk of drowning.
He'd fucked it up, and that failure stared back at him from dark blue eyes and a freckled face whenever they crossed paths.
Which seemed much more frequently, now that everybody knew about the relationship. Courtships were exciting, with every single person gossiping and betting on how soon a couple would form the bond in front of the Great Mother.
Ao'nung had to listen to Kiri complain that all the good men were taken at this rate, and how handsome and strong T'xavtey was. How chivalrous and selfless.
Boring. The more Ao'nung saw the older warrior, the more boring he became. Unremarkable face, average height, dull blade strapped across his chest. Ao'nung made sure to keep his own sharp and gleaming, to strap it to his thigh instead. He wasn't a good match for her, too evenly tempered and with no real personality to speak of.
He watched them together, how her smile would always remain calm and polite, how she'd thank T'xavtey for the food and drink he continued to bring over. They never argued, never even rolled their eyes at a stupid joke the other made. Ao'nung wondered if that was what love was supposed to look like.
The final straw, however, came one late summer evening. The air was warm and heavy, and Tsireya had agreed to accompany Ao'nung on a day trip around the surrounding islands. They talked about anything and nothing, how Ao'nung's nephew Neteyam was running circles around Lo'ak and Tsireya, how the tulkun herd had grown in the last few years.
"Ao'nung," Tsireya finally said, jerking her head over to the island he'd been circling for half an hour on the back of his tsurak, hoping and praying that his sister would finally get hungry. "Want to stop here for a while? We could join the communal dinner, I might say hello to a few friends."
"Sure," he said nonchalantly, steering his war beast towards the white sands of her home, heart beating. It was rare that Ao’nung came here, but he hadn't seen a glimpse of her in a while and the fear over her upcoming mating ceremony that was lodged behind his teeth made him reckless. T'xavtey would probably move once they became one, help her as she became the next tsahík.
And then there would be no more reasons for her to come to Awa'atlu, especially not for the bitter ex-boyfriend that wallowed in self-pity whenever she came near.
They dismounted at the beach and got greeted by an enthusiastic crowd, the future Olo'eyktan of a neighbouring clan always welcome. Ao'nung nodded at a few people, and lost Tsireya in a throng of women that came rushing over, most of them gushing over her small pregnancy bump.
He half listened to her explain that, no, we don't know what we'll name it yet and no, Lo'ak couldn't come today when he saw them.
Ao'nung had become good at taking deep breaths and smiling politely whenever he had to, but something about the sight of her that evening made him stop cold.
There she was, sitting crosslegged behind her soon-to-be mate, conversing with her mother and father as she oiled T'xavtey's hair and braided it into thick, shiny masterpieces.
Something she'd done before going to bed for Ao'nung, whenever he'd been particularly stressed or just looked too wild and untamed for her taste. She'd giggled about the small curls wrapping themselves around her fingers as she worked, as though in defiance to her attempt to wrangle them into shape.
And now she was doing it for him, eyes downcast on her fingers. Her father looked pleased with his new son-in-law, and her mother animated as always as they all chatted away.
The noise that escaped Ao'nung couldn't be described as anything but painful and hurt.
Tsireya loudly called after him as he turned where he stood, then ran. Deep sea eyes snapped up at the same time he threw one last look over his shoulder, voluntarily ramming a knife through his own heart.
He wasn't thinking straight, wasn't even going back to his tsurak, just tearing through the jungle surrounding the impressive village. There wasn't much vegetation here, he'd soon reach the other side of the island and their sea terraces and maybe if he knocked himself unconscious he'd be able to drown himself in one of them-
He heard branches snapping behind himself, almost laughing through the pain because he'd known, he'd known she would follow him, had never been able to resist a chase.
He stumbled over a root in his haste to get away from the reflection of what could have been him. He wondered if she ever looked at her lover and searched for a sliver of Ao'nung there, or if it was truly just him doomed to that fate.
"Stop!" She shouted, nearly ramming into him as Ao'nung tried to regain his balance. Her breaths came heavily and her eyes were stormy like an angry sea at dawn. They stared at each other for a while, trying to get air into tired lungs, before she hissed. "What the fuck was that about?"
Instead of answering, he threw his head back and laughed. He laughed until he felt sick, until her eyes turned from angry to concerned, until he felt stupid useless tears well up behind his eyes.
"I'm messed up!" Ao'nung shouted out, into the quiet and dark jungle, arms spread wide. "I'm a mess and I can't think straight anymore. You ruined me."
"I beg your pardon?" She said, concern morphing into anger. "What did I do wrong?"
He waved her off, dismissing her question as he stumbled onwards towards the sea terraces just beyond the tree line-
An iron grip around his bicep hauled him around and then, suddenly, tears were pouring down Ao'nung's cheeks. How typical, he thought cynically, to lose my nerves in the moments that count the most.
Clenching his jaw tightly, he refused to meet her eyes.
"'Nungie," she whispered, softly and so at odds with the harsh grip she had to use to keep him from running again. "What- what's wrong?"
Ao'nung swallowed, then hiccuped quietly. She cooed as he pushed his face into her shoulder and neck, tears streaming out of his eyes, hitting her smooth skin and dampening his cheeks.
She pushed her hands through his open hair, fingertips brushing against his cheekbone and ear and the residue of oil on them smeared across it. The memory of her sitting there with T'xavtey seemed permanently etched into his brain, even pressing his eyes shut and thinking of their shared times instead couldn't erase that.
"You are gone," he rasped out, suddenly clutching onto her waist and the small of her back in desperation as he cried into her neck. He had a feeling there would be no more chances to hold her like this in perhaps as little as a few days' time. "I messed it up, and now he is in my place."
As close as he was, he felt her swallow. Fingers tightened over his scalp, and he groaned in pain and contentment, torn between feeling too much and nothing at all. Saying it out loud felt like getting ripped apart but also like he'd finally spat out poison.
"I-," she started, breath hitching as his hands closed around her waist, thumbs almost overlapping. She must have lost weight, Ao'nung noted, displeased. What was that guy feeding her, leaves and water?
"He is a good man," her voice wavered, sad and lonely.
"I know," Ao'nung answered, miserably. It made him feel worse. Had her mate been an abusive asshole, he could have swooped in and saved his princess. But like this, Ao'nung instead just felt like a dangerous sea serpent, dragging her down with him into his own depths.
"He treats me well and would never hurt me."
"I know," he whispered back.
"You left me, Ao'nung. I had to watch you have fun without me from a distance- You can't just- You can't just come here and-"
Her voice broke off and he circled his arms tighter around her for real now, engulfing her.
"I'm sorry," Ao'nung cried, quietly and she held him as he fell apart a little more. I'm sorry for making you feel like shit, I'm sorry for treating you like you were interchangeable, I'm sorry that I still want you despite it all.
"I can see that now," she murmured, stroking his hair soothingly. "And I forgive you. But we need to move past this, you can't come here anymore. It's not good for us. I was selfish in thinking we could at least be acquaintances by now-"
Ao'nung growled and she stopped the flood of words pouring out of her, pushing her cheek against his wet one instead.
"Do you love him?" He asked roughly, pressing her soft body against his own scars and tattoos and ribs that felt like they had been crushed by an invisible hammer.
"Ao'nung, I-"
"Answer me," he begged and she tugged his head away from her shoulder, staring deeply into his reddened eyes once more.
"I will learn to love him," she said firmly, sadness lacing her words, lower lip trembling. That was as good as a no, and they both knew it.
"You're just settling for him?" Ao'nung ground out, hands flexing and sliding lower over her hips as he tugged her even closer. "Seriously? Choosing the nice guy because it's easy?"
Tears softened the harsh words and she wiped them away firmly for him, looking every bit as miserable in the glow of the fauna around them as Ao'nung felt.
"What's my alternative? Living in fear of you running off to chase the next thrill once you get tired of me again?"
He wanted to scream. She just didn't understand, couldn't see that he wasn't that kid anymore.
They stood like that, full of words that had no way of making it past their lips without tearing open even more wounds, inviting thoughts that had no business being there between them.
Her eyes flickered down to his mouth for only a heartbeat and Ao'nung licked them reflexively.
And then, suddenly, he was drowning in the ocean of her eyes, in the way her eyelashes tickled his cheekbones as he tilted his head down towards her trembling mouth.
"Tell me to stop", he murmured, begged her. If she could stay strong enough for the both of them, perhaps they could avoid this disaster waiting to happen.
But she said nothing, just closed the distance and suddenly, finally, he could taste her sweet lips on his once more, feel her fingers as they gripped the back of his neck.
Ao'nung lifted her as he straightened back up, a faint echo of nights and days long gone. Their mouths never left each other, and her tongue licked along the seam of his lips, asking him if they should really do this. He sucked her into his mouth gently in answer, bit her bottom lip, grabbed her ass and helped her wrap her legs around his thick waist.
They kissed and kissed, breathlessly. Ao'nung tried to focus on every single second of this moment, could taste the goodbye for what it was in her mouth. This was for her as much as it was for him, a last goodbye they never had because he'd been a coward and stupid.
Her soft hands slid from his shoulders back to his wild curls, sometimes holding his face still as she devoured him and he let her do whatever she pleased because it was so good and so right and he'd been such a fool-
They jerked apart at almost the exact same time, panting heavily into the humid jungle air as fireflies zoomed past in swarms. He could see the tears in her eyes as well now, but Ao'nung felt oddly calm.
He gently lowered her back to the soft ground, hands ghosting up from her thighs over her sides and stomach and breasts and then he was holding her face once more, index and thumb playing with one of the many earrings in her ear.
"He's a good man," Ao'nung reminded her, and she sobbed, leaning her face into his palm.
"I know."
"And I might never be what you truly need."
"I know," it was barely a whisper this time.
Ao'nung pressed his forehead against hers for a long moment, breathing in her sweet, intoxicating and familiar smell. This might be the last time he'd ever seek her out and he wanted to stay just a second longer.
"You should go back," he said eventually, pushing her back until there was a little distance between them, enough so that they could both cool their warm faces in the jungle breeze. "Tell Tsireya I'll be back in just a moment, will you?"
Small fingers brushed along underneath his chin, and then she was gone, swallowed up by the thicket with no trace left behind except for the lingering burn of tears in Ao'nung's eyes.
Maybe one day you'll feel lonely  And in his eyes, you'll get a glimpse Maybe you'll start slipping slowly And find me again

enjoy the silence | ao’nung.
ao’nung x fem!sully!reader
part one | next part
Tumblr media
synopsis: Nothing could break your sunshine personality, not even your family’s abrupt move to Pandora’s reefs. But, the Olo’eyktan and Tsahik’s son of the Metkayina, who you’ve fallen at first sight for, greatly tested that.
genre: fluff, angst.
contains: pining from reader; toward ao’nung, mentions of bullying, name calling, feeling alone. ao’nung being a bully (what’s new). unrequited love.
a/n: welcome to my first piece of writing ever! i had to give the honors to my bf ao’nung. this isn’t exactly canon to ao’nung in atwow, he doesn’t outwardly bully the sullys like he does in the movie. but still angsty. let me know if you guys enjoy this!
The Metkayina's way of living was definitely strange to adapt to, but not difficult. Your new life was filled with training your breathing, riding your Ilu, or exploring underwater. Pandora’s enchanting reefs made it hard to dislike living in Awa’atlu, and despite having to uproot your life from the forest so suddenly, you really enjoyed living here. Every day you found something that made your life here greater. Finding an especially pretty shell, weaving your first top with pretty pearls, and even finding a pretty boy to crush on.
The son of the Olo’eyktan and the Tsahik of the Metkayina had caught your eye. When your family first landed here, being picked, prodded, and eyed at by the people, your attention couldn’t help be on him. You were ecstatic when Tonowari put his two children to help your family learn the way of the Metkayina. Ao’nung, not so much.
His death glare scared you, sure, but despite that, he was gorgeous. His braids that tie up into a bun of dark curls, his tooth necklace that dangles off his chest when he bends over, his glistening skin when he’d emerge from the water. Everything about him was admirable, you’d bet his personality had to be wild and free. You’d just have to get close enough for the heir to notice you.
Just your luck, Ao’nung was most often paired with you when you were training. Tsireya was too enamored with your brother, Lo’ak, to pick anyone else.
“Breathe deep from here,” Ao’nung instructed you, hand on your upper stomach. Your breath couldn’t help but hitch, soon quickening.
“Your heart, it’s beating fast. Calm your breathing, feel the water,” Neteyam, Lo’ak, and Tsireya all shared a knowing look.
“Sorry, Ao’nung,” he gave you a small smile, but it soon disappeared and the lesson moved on.
“Just focus, m’kay?”
His smile was your glimmer of hope. Maybe he did take the same liking you had with him? No, he’s just following orders. But, did his father’s orders entail being friendly, too?
Still, you had hope. He had to be your someone, by Eywa, you felt it.
You spent your free time practicing your weaving to make gifts for him, or practicing your breathing and sign language to impress him. Always at the shore to collect sea shells for him. Never not around the Tsahik, his mother, listening to her speak with the fellow healers. Ronal had even grown to like you. Such an attentive, obedient girl. Just what Ao’nung needed in his life, your attention would put a pause on his recent bad behavior. Perhaps it was fate that a Tsakarem was brought to their clan, the perfect mate for her son.
In the Omaticaya, you trained everyday for your whole life on how to rule next to the Olo’eyktan and interpret the will of Eywa. You couldn’t help but believe that, maybe, Ao’nung was the Olo’eyktan you’ve been training for. The one to look after the people with. The one to be by your side for the rest of your life. Your mate. You would be perfect together.
Of course, he didn’t see you the same way. But, you didn’t know this. He saw you as a measly forest girl with “demon” blood flowing through her veins that didn’t belong. Your five fingered waves of hello to him every morning were nothing but offensive. How could you be so content with being part enemy?
You were familiar with the uncertainty people felt toward you being half human. You felt it in your own clan. The Omaticaya didn’t take your extra fingers and the hairs on your brow bone with delight. They had been nothing short of disappointed when Toruk Makto’s children came out looking like dream walkers and not pure Na’vi.
The children of the clan specifically acted on their distaste quite boldly throughout your life. The teasing, name calling, bullying, it wasn’t new to you. “Freak,” “demon,” pushing around, leaving you out, pranks being pulled. Jake had always said to not give them the reaction they’re looking for, and after a while it worked. You gave them nothing, they left you alone.
But you didn’t like being alone. That wasn't what you wanted. You didn’t like not fitting in, not belonging. It hurt, at first, having no one. No one to talk to, to hang out with. All you had was yourself.
Your family made up for it, though. How could you not be happy with them? They filled the hole in your heart made from loneliness, all you could see was the good things in your life when you had them.
“You’re always lookin’ on the bright side, honey. Always makin’ my day better. It’s something we should all take after you,” your father, Jake, always said to you.
Everything was yellow and bright in your life. The way you and your siblings could all fit on your hammock back home, sleeping together. Learning how to shoot with a bow. Your mother, Neytiri, making arrows and weaving tops with you and your sisters.
Coming closer to becoming an adult in the eyes of the Omaticaya every passing day. The pretty flowers you’d harvest to bring to Jake, the close-knit bond of your family. All good things, always good things. Nothing, not even the loneliness, could break your sunshine.
So, you saw your move to the reefs as a chance to explore the world and make it exciting rather than sad. Maybe you’d find people to fit in with, even though this clan was so drastically different from yours, there has to be someone here for you, right?
“Are you a freak?”
Startled, your gaze on the bright blue water shifts to look around, “What?”
It was Ao’nung, your demeanor calms. “I said, are you some sort of freak?”
You smile at him, standing from your crouched position on the sand, “No, Ao’nung, m’not.” Even this close up, he’s breathtaking. His face is inches from yours.
He falters but rebuts, “what about your hands, huh? You’ve got demon in you. Five fingers.”Ao’nung takes your hand, emphasizing his point by shoving your own hand in your face. But he’s holding your hand, so softly, too. Not squeezing  or gripping it harshly. Your heart is swelling and you wonder if he’s feeling the same electricity from the contact.
You reluctantly pull your hand from his grasp, a small smile present on your face. He must be teasing you, no harm in a little banter.
“Got five from my dad. Used to be a human and now he’s Toruk Makto. He’s the greatest warrior on Pandora.”
“Oh, yeah? Why’s the mighty Toruk Makto hiding out here in the reefs, then? Must still be human, running away from his own battles. It’s pathetic,” you understand, now, he’s not teasing. He’s speaking from disgust.
“No, he’s Na’vi. Has been for years now. We’re Na’vi, not Sky People, dream walkers.” You see him, you understand his confusion, his distaste, his ignorance. You want him to see you, too.
Maybe he will see you as more than a forest girl, more than a demon. Maybe he will see your qualities, your fast learning, your fascination with the water, your adoration for him. Maybe he will see you the same way you see him, as a future mate. His girl.
“But you aren’t Na’vi, can’t you see that? You don’t belong in this world, here, with us. You’re meant to be with the Sky People, not here, bringing your war to us. It’s selfish, just what Sky People would do. Cower and destroy. You don’t see like Na’vi, you don’t understand like Na’vi. You don’t belong,” he finishes, stalking away back to the village.
Your heart can’t help but shatter. Each of Ao’nung’s harsh words pricking at your heart and tears from your eyes. And still, you can’t help but yearn for him.

Swimming Against the Current
Pairing: Aonung x Sully Fem!Reader
Tags: angst with a happy ending, cuddles, nightmares, comfort, secret crush (both sides)
Word count: 0.5k
A/N: Angst and Aonung go well together, they both star with and "A" and end with a good ending.
Tumblr media
Suddenly leaving your home and everything you've ever known seemed terrifying even before you arrived here. The fact that the welcome was... well less then welcoming didn't help either. And Aonung was one of the worse. Even before he almost got Lo'ak killed with his stupid prank you hated his guts.
Granted since then he's become slightly more tolerable but he still had this "better then everyone else" attitude about him. Even during his lessons you could feel his tail wrapping around your ankle and pulling you face to face to him and then blowing bubbles in your face. At least you weren't fighting, that was progress, at least according to your parents.
"Hey, hey freak, wake up." You practically jumped on top of the person shaking you, knife in your hand ready to- "It's me you idiot!" Aonung pushed on your shoulders, hissing back at you a little.
You needed time to focus, to get a read on your surroundings again. This was your tree. At least the one you picked out for when you wanted some piece and quiet. There weren't any nearly as nice as the ones back home but this would do. "So?" You scoffed at him, "A few scars might make that face of your appealing. I'd be doing you a favor. At least then you could attract a mate."
"Ha! I have many options I'll have you know! You wish you that you had as many as I did!" He might still be under the threat of you knifing him but somehow, someway, by some irrigating and charming miracle he still managed to ooze that all important, cocky aura.
How can someone's face look so punchable and so kissable at the same time?
"I used to. Before we had to leave." You whispered that last part, finally getting off him, sheathing your knife and moving away into a corner where you let wrapped your tail around yourself in comfort.
"Wait... fuck... I didn't mean..." He groaned and rubbed the back of his neck, cringing at himself. "Well... I bet none of them were as handsome as me right?"
"Annoying more like it." You hid your small smile with your arms, nuzzling deep into them. You felt the pressure of Aonung's broad back against yours, "What do you want now Aonung?"
"Nothing. Just looking at the stars. I never noticed how pretty they are from here."
You snickered, "They look better from down below." You pushed against him and laid back, waiting for him to do the same. Without a word he copied you, his head next to yours, his tail slowly sliding against your leg and settling on your foot.
"I see. Have you ever been up there?" He glanced at you, seeming actually interested.
"No. But if I ever do I'll take you with me, see how long it takes for you to start begging to go back down." You pressed your elbow against his ribs playfully. "Bet you wouldn't last an hour up there."
Aonung laughed at your fighting spirit, that was one side of you he always liked. His hand settled on top of yours, waiting for you to turn your palm against his. "I promise I'll do better then any Omatikaya ever could."

masterlist
“C’mon! We have to go get Spider!” Lo’ak nodded his head towards the inside of the ship as you cut him free from his restraints.
“What?” you responded, unable to process what he’d just said.
Your older brother behind you, Neteyam, cut off the tie bounding Tuk’s hands with a dagger, and another quick snap further behind told you Ao’nung had just cut off Tsireya’s.
You and your siblings were in the middle of a full blown war.
Besides almost getting crushed by Payakan, getting taken hostage, killing about 5 people trying to save your siblings, and witnessing the deaths of many of your own people, things in your opinion were going great so far.
“C’mon sis, we can’t leave without him!” Lo’ak crouched down, picking up a gun from one of the fallen na’vi soldiers slouched against the railings, blood seeping down their skull.
Your gaze was fixed on the grip of the gun that was firmly clasped in his fingers, stained with red at the bottom. The blood trickled down silently, creating a small pool on the already drenched floor, yet it seemed inconsequential amidst the chaos.
In that brief moment of dread, a warm hand fell on your shoulder, squeezing it reassuringly.
Something similar to fear took over your body, causing you to be unable to take your eyes off your younger brother who looked at you hopefully, while you stood there like a deer caught in headlights.
It wasn’t like you didn’t want to save him. The images of blood spraying all over replayed in your mind, making it hard to focus on anything else.
“You don’t have to go if you don’t want to,” a comforting voice drifted through the air, pulling you back into reality.
The foreign accent had a calming effect on your senses, a zap of electricity running down your queue.
Whipping your head, you met the eyes of the person who had spoken, the comforting shade of aquamarine looking back at you with such emotion.
Lo’ak rolled his eyes at the sight, a low growl forming in his throat. He never approved of your relationship with the boy, but what could he do about it? He was in love with the man’s sister!
Neteyam sauntered towards your brother, braids waving wildly in the air as they always did.
“I’ll go with you,” he nodded at Lo’ak, ignoring Ao’nung completely as he looked at you, seeking any form of approval.
Your brows knitted together, and you shook your head.
“It’s fine. I’ll go. We all know I’m a better warrior than Neteyam anyways.” you joked, attempting to lift the mood.
“Are you sure?” Neteyam said softly.
“Positive. You should go and help out the other warriors.” you nodded, feeling the comforting warmth of Ao’nung’s hand leave your shoulder.
Looking back at him, you could see the fear and concern etched on your lover's face. He looked so perplexed, a reaction you’d never seen on his face before.
Before you could take a single step, his arms pulled you in for a hug as if he was shielding you from any threat that could harm you.
He didn’t want you to leave.
Lo’ak and Neteyam groaned, looking instead at the ocean, watching the metkayina and the sky people battle for their opposing goals.
Ao’nung leaned in and pressed his forehead against yours.
"Please be careful."
The sound that came from his mouth was barely but a whisper, as if he would choke if he said it any louder.
You smiled, placing a hand on his neck reassuringly.
“I’ll come back to you. I promise.”
As the words left your lips, you waved a farewell to him before going inside the ship, Lo’ak in front of you.
The thumping of your heart echoed in your chest like an empty chamber. You weren’t going to break a promise.
At least,
not this time.
“Lereho!” a guttural, high pitched scream reverberated throughout the forest.
The sleeping creatures lifted their heads up in the sky, ears pointing in all different directions, attempting to make out the source of the scream.
“LEREHO!” a 7-year-old you screamed even louder, tears flowing down your pale face as you looked at the rusty helicopter.
The rusty helicopter which had now trapped your friend inside its worn down metal walls, and he scratched against the door endlessly, trying to get out.
“I- I-” your words were unable to come out, your entire body trembling with fear.
The large metal body was encased in mossy vines that suspended it above the lake, and Eywa knows Lereho couldn’t swim to save his life.
“I’LL GET HELP, LEREHO! PLEASE STAY HERE!” you cried out, praying to the Great Mother he could hear you.
“I PROMISE I’LL GET YOU OUT OF THERE!” you yelled, your voice hoarse and strained, your entire body buckling down with the weight of your words.
You turned back and ran as far as you could, as fast as your legs could take you. Your face was all scrunched up and your eyes were full of tears, partly obscuring your vision.
Branches scratched your body and drew blood from your fresh wounds, but you didn’t care. Guilt overtook your body and put you on autopilot.
If you hadn’t told him to, he wouldn’t have gone in the helicopter with you.
If you hadn’t been stupid, you wouldn’t have closed the door.
If you hadn’t slipped on the vines on your way back to solid ground, the helicopter wouldn’t be creaking slowly, on its way to submerge him fully in the lake.
If you hadn’t been friends with him in the first place, maybe he would’ve been alright right now.
You wiped the water from your eyes and the snot from your nose harshly with your bleeding hands.
By the time you returned with your father, all that was left were the torn apart vines flowing loosely in the wind of the night.
They couldn’t even retrieve his body.
Beads of water welled up at the corners of your eyes as you crouched along the wall, Spider in your sights.
Blinking rapidly to get rid of them, you leapt down with Lo’ak, taking care of the humans surrounding your friend mercilessly.
You screamed as you smashed the last one’s skull along the railing, flipping them into the water, heavy pants leaving your chest as the adrenaline wore off.
“Woah. You alright?” Lo’ak gasped, slightly concerned.
“I’m fine,” you breathed out. “We have to go, now.”
You grabbed a gun from one of the dead soldiers, and not long after you heard the sounds of rapid gunfire hit metal a bit too close to you for your liking.
With your instincts you dove out of the way, grabbing Spider with your free hand and quickly crawling along the floor towards the moonpool, ensuring that Lo’ak was still behind you.
The shots from the gun made the air burn in your lungs, and you coughed vehemently before hiding behind a wall just in front of the moonpool, whispering a quick apology to Spider for being so harsh with him.
“You two go!” you shouted at the two boys behind you, whipping out your gun in an attempt to kill the bastard who was shooting so restlessly at you.
“Are you nuts? We aren’t leaving you!” Lo’ak yelled back, considerably offended you’d think he’d abandon you so easily.
“Just go now! I’ll be fine!” you growled, taking another shot at the recom.
Amidst the deafening sounds of gunfire, you were able to discern two distinct splashes in the water.
Retreating behind the wall for cover, you swiftly reloaded your weapon with the remaining ammunition scattered on the ground.
Taking a deep breath, you braced yourself and emerged once again, determined to make your final shot count.
Ao’nung whipped his head around frantically as he stood on one of the ships purposed for hunting tulkun, all of the previous occupiers…removed.
He looked towards the ship for any possible sign that you were still okay.
He’d witnessed Lo’ak and Spider riding away from the ship on an ilu, but where were you?
His heart beat faster and faster with every shallow breath he desperately took, unable to imagine what had happened to you.
Just before he was about to call his own ilu, he heard a loud splash from the water behind him.
He turned his body, bracing for a surprise attack, but instead, he got a surprise hug.
As your body melded with his, you rested your chin on his shoulder, feeling a calming sense of peace.
At first, his hands trembled as he placed them on your back, taken aback by the sudden embrace.
But gradually, he relaxed into it, a radiant smile gracing his face as he shut his eyes, savouring every point of contact between your bodies, determined to remember what it felt like.
There were so many things he’d wanted to say to you, but only three words left his quivering lips.
“You… came back,” he choked out, even attempting to hug you tighter, before realising that he might have been hurting you- to which he loosened his grip.
You sighed contently, gazing at the water behind him. “I promised.”
Just then, you saw something underneath the ripples of the ocean.
Everything was too fast for him to process.
One second, he was hugging you like it was the last thing he could ever do with you in the world.
The next second, it actually was.
His eyelids whipped wide open as he heard a gunshot, his body hitting the floor in the direction opposite to where he was originally standing.
You threw him out of harm’s way.
The last time he’d ever seen you was with your mouth agape and pupils shrunken into the size of his thumb, as you fell lifelessly backwards into the water with a loud splash.
“NO!” he screamed helplessly as he scrambled up from the floor, his knees scraping against metal as he crawled frantically towards the edge to see if you were alright.
The only thing he could see from the surface of the water was your blood slowly tinting the ocean red. No bubbles. No sign of you resurfacing.
Without hesitation, he plunged into the blood-red ocean, his body slicing through the water with a sense of urgency. As he dove deeper, his limbs thrashed and flailed, propelled by a desperate need to reach you and bring you back to the surface.
His panicked movements grew increasingly frantic as he searched for you, his bloodshot eyes darting around frantically in the murky depths. Every fibre of his being was focused on finding you, but as he scanned the water, he realised with a jolt that you were nowhere to be found.
Determined to keep searching, he pushed himself to swim deeper, his hands and feet churning the water as he scoured the depths for any sign of you.
But as he descended further and further into the abyss, his vision began to blur, and his lungs burned with the need for air.
Despite his physical limitations, he refused to give up, driven by a fierce determination to find you.
All he could see was the trail of your blood, leading him deeper into the unknown.
His fingers outstretched, he tried to reach you, but it was too late.
His lungs burned with a searing pain as he struggled to hold his breath. But he refused to give up, clinging to the hope that he would find you alive and well.
As the seconds ticked by, his chances grew slimmer, and his body began to betray him. His limbs felt heavy and sluggish, and his vision grew hazy with tears.
Despite his efforts, he simply couldn't hold on any longer.
He broke the surface of the water, gasping for air as his heart shattered into a million pieces.
The devastating reality of his failure hit him like a ton of bricks, leaving him reeling with a sense of loss and despair.
A soul-wrenching cry tore through the air.
The sound was so raw and guttural that it felt as if it came from the very depths of the earth itself, carrying with it the weight of a thousand shattered dreams.
It was the kind of cry that would make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, a sound that would haunt you long after battle was over.
The cries of the wounded and dying were nothing compared to the sheer agony and despair that his cry conveyed.
The realisation hit him like a ton of bricks - he had lost you forever.
The person he loved most in this world was gone, sacrificed her life to save his. The weight of his grief was so heavy that it felt like a physical burden, crushing him from the inside out.
He wanted to scream, to wail to Eywa, to beg for a chance to take your place.
But he was powerless, reduced to a helpless witness of his own tragedy.
He could feel the weight of his guilt like a physical pain, knowing that you had given your life for his.
Every following moment he had to live without you was a torture, a constant reminder of what he had lost.
He tried to fill the void with his duties, with distractions, with anything that would make the pain go away, but nothing worked.
He would lie awake at night, imagining the pain you felt, the last moments of your life. He pictured you sinking into the cold, dark depths of the ocean, alone and scared, the light fading from your eyes.
It was a pain that he knew would never truly leave him, a wound that would never fully heal.
He felt as if a part of him had died with you, and he knew that he would never be whole again.
They couldn’t retrieve your body. You couldn’t have a proper burial. He couldn’t ever see you again, not even through the spirit tree.
Having to explain what happened to you to your family almost killed him; he could only imagine the pain they felt if he was feeling that way.
He blamed himself. And deep down inside, he knew that they did too.

Neteyam told you and you didn't listen. You allowed yourself to be blindsided by the nice things Ao’nung did for you to forget how much of an ass he was when you and your family first stepped foot seeking shelter that you didn’t even see what was going on when you weren’t around.
You clutch onto the necklace that lay still on your neck, it was the first gift Ao’nung had given you after you decided to give him a chance.
“A beautiful necklace for a sevin girl like you.” He had said and it made you swoon but now the words felt like they were laced with a deadly poison infecting your heart that was hurting the most as you witnessed Ao’nung making fun of your younger sister’s, Kiri, five fingers.
The same five fingers you had and it infuriated you even more.
Lo’ak who was right next to you was about to step in but you put your arm out in front of him silently telling him to stay in his place.
You didn’t know what you were going to do or what you were going to say but your feet started to carry you toward them.
“He asked if you’re a freak!” One of his friends had repeated, Kiri was still unphased but you were seething with anger. “No” Kiri softly said but Ao’nung just scoffed.
“Are you sure, I mean you’re not even real Na’vi” He snickers as he tries to reach for Kiri’s hand but before he can, you push him with all your strength making him stumble onto his friend. “What the-“ As soon as he saw your angry face, he knew he fucked up big time.
He puts up his hands in surrender. “This is not what it looks like.” Kiri makes her way over to you putting a hand on your shoulder knowing how much you’re hurting inside.
“Then tell me what it looked like 'cause it’s pretty clear you were making fun of my little sister!” You yell at him, stepping towards him as he steps back.
“I was just joking-“ you interrupted him with a hiss filled with hatred, his ears pinned flat to his head as his tail slowly dropped sadly.
“You lied to me! You promised me, you would treat my siblings with respect,” you fight back the tears not wanting them to fall down in front of him.
If you break down just one bit, it’d be so hard to fight yourself from running into his arms which became your safe haven.
“I trusted you!” You push him again. “I was a fool to think that a skxawng like you could ever change.” His eyes widen with fear, “Oeyä tiyawn, what are you saying?” He tries to take your hand but you step back and look into his eyes that were filled with tears.
“I’m saying we’re over,” you take off the necklace still fighting back the tears as you place it in his hand which was frozen in place.
“No, you can’t, we’re meant to be together.” He protests, gripping tightly on the necklace.
“I can’t be with someone who would find joy in making fun of my family, different features or not, we’re ‘real na’vi’” you recalled one of his words which still stung as you kept going over the many memories you both made with each other.
“Tiyawn, I didn’t mean any of it, please don’t do this.” His voice cracked as tears rolled down his face. The sight just made you even angrier than you already were, how dare he cry when he was the one in the wrong.
You let out a small laugh causing him to look at you with confusion, “You really are a skxawng you know that?” He opens his mouth to talk but you immediately hissed and his mouth shut quickly.
“When you call her a freak, you’re calling me a freak as well!” You yelled as you pushed him again.
You raise your five fingers at him. “I have five fingers which you held onto and said you loved, so why is it different with me, huh?” You held back a sob that threatened to escape your mouth.
“I must be some fucking fantastic freak you’ve ever seen.” You yell as you meet his teary gaze that held nothing but fear and regret. You point to him and back to you.
“Whatever we had is over, I don’t ever want to see you again.” With that being said, you turn to walk away but before you can take a step, his hand grips your wrist trying to plead with you to give him one more chance but you snatch your hand away from him and walk in the direction of your marui with Kiri walking close to you.
Ao’nung tries to go after you but Lo’ak stops him, quietly telling him to go the other way, trying to restrain himself from punching him right then and there.
The walk back to your marui was silent as you replayed everything in your mind, tears finally allowed to fill your eyes but never fell because you didn’t want Lo’ak and Kiri to see you like this but you failed to cause once you stepped foot in the marui and saw Neteyam, your lip trembled as the tears rolled down your face, you make your way over to him and he immediately embraces you in a hug as you let it all out.
“Tsmukan, you were right, you’re always right.” You cried as he held you close as Lo’ak and Kiri patted your back letting you know they were here for you.
As you wept, no one said anything, just comforted you til you quieted down. Neteyam couldn’t wait till he see Ao’nung so he can punch him for making the one thing he didn’t want to come true happen.

THE SONG IS NOT MINE!!! IT'S CALLED: if the world was ending.
BEAUTIFUL ART OF OLDER AO'NUNG IS ALSO NOT MINE, FULL CREDITS TO THE ORIGINAL OWNER/ARTIST. here's the link where i found it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Y/N has always been mysterious. Even as a small child, Ao'nung remembered her as a small, quiet girl. But even when he got to know her, and played with her in the water, she never told him anything about herself. He could talk for hours and she said nothing.
He started liking Y/N as a teenager. She was really pretty, not pretty, beautiful, and caught the eyes of many. Ao'nung had to fight for her, for her favor. For the favor of the mysterious beauty, as he called her. That nickname got on Y/N's nerves.
But Y/N didn't want him. She didn't want the others either.
Ao'nung didn't understand. He went then, 15 years old, to his father, all unhappy with Y/N's rejection.
"Son, now listen carefully," Tonowari told him.
His wife, Ronal was amused by this, she liked that the girl taught her son a lesson that he doesn't always get what he wants. Of course, she felt sorry for him. But it brought a smile to her lips that her son is growing up. She was sure that girl liked him, she knew it from the way Y/N looked at her son. They were too young to have serious love.
"You shouldn't tell your mother this. But Y/L/N's girls were always mysterious as well as beautiful. So very much. Ah. I knew her mother, Ao'nung. She was a beautiful woman. Honor to her memory,"
Ao'nung never knew Y/N's mom, Y/N didn't like to talk about her. It was known that she died because someone from the sky people killed her.
"If I didn't know your mom back then, I probably would have thing with her. And maybe not. She already had a thing with Y/N's father by then." Tonowari thought.
"Dad, what does this have to do with what you want to tell me? Ugh,” Ao'nung rolled his eyes.
"Sorry! I want to tell you, son, that the girl has some secrets that she doesn't want to tell you. Some painful secrets like her mother. You know, she may be beautiful, but is she worth it? To love someone who will never reveal himself to you?"
"Marriage is not boring then, you still have the opportunity to learn something about each other," Ronal appeared out of nowhere.
"Ronal," Tonowari said and Ronal apologized with her eyes and walked away with some herb she had come for. She left them alone.
"But mom is right, dad. I want her and one day I will have her," Ao'nung declared confidently.
His father messed up the hair on his son's head. “Okay, Ao'nung. But wait a little longer, because now you are a child. And she's too. Everything will come. And choose with your heart, not your mind. Whether she will be your wife or another, love each other."
10 years later
Y/N was holding the blue flower Ao'nung had given her. Olo'eyktan. Her husband.
This year was so sad. For the whole clan. Tonowari died. In battle. Ao'nung didn't take it well and Y/N stood by him. She wiped his tears and comforted him. But Ao'nung had to become their leader. He has to be Olo'eyktan like his father. Y/N knew his father would be proud of him.
"But he would like you to stand up. To be strong," she put her hand on his shoulder.
Ao'nung took her hand and looked into her eyes. She was now his support in these difficult times. Not that he didn't have support from his pregnant sister, but his sister had enough of her worries. He didn't want to bother her. And his mother? She went away somewhere. She needed to be alone. After all, she lost her husband.
Only Y/N didn't leave him. She stood by him. She always stood by him. It was strange, Ao'nung sometimes acted like a jerk, but for some strange reason, she was always there for him. She once revealed to him that it was because she liked him.
"Ao'nung, I look at you and see a strong leader in you. Like your father. You will be a wise and strong leader. I am proud of you,"
Ao'nung dropped to his knees before her and kissed her hands.
"What are you doing?? Get up!” Y/N ordered him.
Ao'nung ignored her.
“Y/N… be with me. Rule with me. I love you."
Y/N had tears in her eyes. "Ao'nung..." she didn't want to believe what was happening. Her childhood friend, who had been chasing her for years, had grown up and become a man. And now he is kneeling in front of her and begging her to become his wife.
"Please. You are my only comfort. Hope."
"Yes. Ao'nung. Yes.” she threw herself around his neck and Ao'nung kissed her tears away. They kissed each other's tears. They always loved each other, even though Y/N took longer because.. she didn't even know why. But she knew one thing her heart belonged to Ao'nung.
╭┈◦•◦❥•◦ Ao'nung slept hard. Y/N didn't. It didn't make sense, they made love all night, they promised each other their love, they mated and they were married. She should have been tired. But she wasn't. She stared at the sky full of stars.
She turned and looked at her husband. He was so handsome. He always was, but now he seemed the most handsome to her.
She had one thing to do. She simply had to. She had to say goodbye and start over. She hoped Ao'nung would forgive her. He might not even notice.
She kissed him and stood up. She threw on her clothes and quietly went to the water. The whole village was asleep and that was good. She quietly called her Ilu. Then she stroked it and they set off.
She had to go to the Tree Of Spirits.
The sea was so magical at night, everything was lit up and sea life was bustling under the water.
When they reached their destination, Y/N sent Ilu away and went to the tree. She connected her braid to the tree.

╭┈◦•◦❥•◦ “Y/N. Every night, every year. You will always come," her mother hugged her.
Y/N was shaking, tears in her eyes. "Mom. I miss you,"
She stroked her hair. "I know, honey."
"Mom... I came to say goodbye to you. I love you but…” Y/N looked at her mother.
"I know. It's time. Don't give up. But to let go," her mother whispered to her.
"I am letting you go. All those years..."
“It wasn't your fault, Y/N. Stop blaming yourself. It was my decision."
"I could have saved you"
"You were a child. What mother would not sacrifice herself for her child?"
Y/N cried:" I saw it. I saw how they killed you. In a brutal way. It never left my mind. I couldn't save you."
Her mother grabbed her hand. "Angel, I'm dead. And I am at peace. I never once regretted my decision. It was the best decision. To let you live."
She sighed. "But promise me something. You won't come here again. You let me go. A new beautiful life full of love awaits you."
"Your husband will love you until his last breath. But you have to forgive yourself. I forgive you, even if I have nothing to forgive, but if it gives you inner peace, then I forgive you. Eywa forgives you too," the mother touched Y/N's heart. "Now is the time for you to forgive yourself."

╭┈◦•◦❥•◦ Ao'nung smiled in satisfaction. He finally smiled. He was smiling after those long dark days. He had a beautiful passionate night with a woman, his wife, whom he sincerely loves.
He turned towards her to say something, but she wasn't there. He got up angrily. He must be dreaming of that! He went outside, but she was nowhere in sight.
The sun was slowly rising and Ao'nung looked for her all over the village. She was nowhere.
Did she run away from him?
Of course, it was too good to be true. Of course, she left. She left him like everyone else. He roared like a wounded roar and fell to his knees.
"Ao'nung," his sister walked up to him and wanted to get him to his feet. "You don't know what day it is today, do you?"
╭┈◦•◦❥•◦ Y/N had a big problem. She had inner peace, but she found out a terrible thing. And that she was much longer there than she planned. She found it out by the sun. She was afraid to go back to the village, but she had to be strong.
She hoped that no one would be waiting for her on the beach, but she was wrong. There were a lot of them. But Ao'nung was not there. Y/N's heart skipped a beat. Was he angry?
"Olo'eyktan! She's back!" someone shouted and Ao'nung appeared from the shadows, like a god of vengeance. He had an angry expression on his face. But he didn't want to make a scene in front of everyone, so without a word, he grabbed her hand and dragged her to where they would have privacy.
"Ao'nung."
"Shut up. Now I'll speak," he said angrily, making sure no one heard them.
"How could you do this to me? After our night, you just disappeared. Do you know what it was like to wake up and you weren't there? I was really worried about you! Y/N!” he yelled.
Y/N looked down. She felt useless. She was sorry.
"Ao'nung, I would never leave you. You know that." she whispered.
Ao'nung looked down at her. "Really? How can I trust you?"
Y/N fell to her knees. "Sorry. I'm sorry, but I had to do it. I had to forgive myself," she whispered.
"Get up," he motioned to her, but she didn't get up. She shook her head. "Punish me if you want, I deserve it, Olo'eyktan."
Ao'nung's expression softened. “I don't want to punish you, y/n. I love you too much for that. But please, let's be honest with each other." he sat down. "No more secrets. I don't know if I can handle any more secrets. I used to like that about you, Y/N, that you were mysterious but now.."
"I understand that. And I have nothing to hide from you. I'll tell you everything," she took a deep breath.
1 year later
Ao'nung kissed his wife passionately. She giggled. "Ao'nung, stop! Someone can see us!"
"Then let them see how I love you," he rolled his eyes.
Y/N wrapped her arms around his neck. "I love you so much, my husband"
"I love you too, my mysterious beauty."
"You know I have nothing to hide from you anymore," she sighed and Ao'nung grabbed her hand. "I know, but I still like that about you and I always will. It was part of you and it still is."

Astray (Ao’nung!)
Tumblr media
Ao’nung x Metkayina Reader
part 1
Synopsis: You’ve been in love with Ao’nung since as long as you can remember. And for just as long, he’s constantly pushed you away. He’s made it clear he doesn’t want you. Yet when the Sully’s arrive in Awa’atlu and the eldest boy shows an interest in you, Ao’nung starts to regret his actions.
warnings: angst, bullying.
a/n: I’m obsessed with Avatar rn & I couldn’t not write for my two boyfriends lmao
Tumblr media
You see him roll his eyes before you’ve even approached him on the sand. Brushing the wet curls away from your eyes, you smile widely at the Olo’eyktan’s son, the same boy you’ve known since the moment you could walk. You’re aware he isn’t too fond of your presence but you’ve done your best to befriend him regardless. Being practically like a sister to his own Tsireya, that factor made it slightly easier to get closer to the boy. But still your attempts never flourished into anything besides you left feeling foolish and embarrassed.
Everytime you’ve suggested doing anything alone with him he either shrugs you off or avoids contact with you before you can even try. You’ll be making a direct beeline toward him and he’ll already be turning in the other direction, hastily trying to catch up to Rotxo and the other boys. His coldness toward you is paired with the usual ‘banter’ you share, in which he insults you and finds new ways to tease you. Anyone with good sense would find this treatment unappealing but you held out more hope for Ao’nung than he deserved.
“Ao’nung!” You call out as you step from beyond the water to approach him. The look on his face already tells you enough but you ignore the signs, ecstatic that you’ve finally caught him alone. He’s usually swarmed by Roxto and the other boys in the Reef, their uneasy presence making your job harder.
“What do you want?” He tuts, his forehead creased as he wears an agitated look on his face. You ignore it, yet again.
“I—I didn’t see you earlier at breakfast. Just wanted to talk, that’s all” You hum, your eyes lowering from his intense gaze, fiddling with the beads on your necklace nervously.
“That’s because I was hiding from you” He snickers, kicking the soft sand with his foot as he turns to glance at the marui pods at the village.
“I have an important meeting to attend to with my father. Meet me back here at night fall. We can talk then” He hums with a slight smile on his face. Before you can even respond or question his sudden act of kindness he walks off back to the marui pods and leaves you speechless.
He’s never suggested meeting you at night before, his request is strange but you don’t question it— instead you thank Eywa for finally blessing you with this. It’ll be a way forward for the two of you and maybe Ao’nung would finally feel the same way about you. A smile grows on your face as you make your way back to your own marui pod, butterflies already raging in your stomach as you thought about all the possibilities for tonight.
You wait for your parents to drift off into deep slumber before you finally leave your pod, glancing at your parents one last time before you quietly tip toe out onto the walkway. You hear your heart pounding in your ears as you walk along the beach, the waves crashing against the shore as your feet leave imprints in the sand. You feel confused as you see no sign of Ao’nung, standing exactly where you had talked earlier— you hoped he was just waiting to sneak out.
“He’ll be here soon” You try to reassure yourself as you wait a little while longer, your fingers tightening around the necklace that rested against your chest.
Defeated after waiting for what feels like an eternity, you finally stand and dust the sand from your legs before you decide to just go back home. Perhaps he couldn’t leave his home, you understood how strict his parents were, being a child of such important people to the village, you were aware of how hard they were on their kids.
As you’re walking back from where you came, you hear someone laugh from behind you. Confused, you turn— eyes meeting Ao’nung's who laughs cruelly as he stares at you. He isn’t alone, Rotxo and two of his other friends are with him and they begin to circle you.
“I told you she’d fall for it” Ao’nung smirks, closing you in so you’re completely surrounded by his friends.
“This isn’t funny guys. Leave me alone” You stutter out, almost losing your footing as you’re constantly moving— trying to find a way out of this.
“You didn’t want to leave Ao’nung alone— so why should we?” Rotxo snorts before he shoves you slightly by your shoulder, you stumble— causing them all to laugh.
“You thought he’d finally confess his love for you? I see you— is that what you want to hear from him?” His other friend mocks you, the sound of his words and the truth behind them causing your face to warm in embarrassment.
“It’s true. Look at her she’s blushing”
“Please just let me go home” You mutter, growing overwhelmed by the boys that surround you. You felt like you were being suffocated, struggling to breathe as they held you hostage.
“You’ll leave me alone from now on. You won’t follow me around like a little baby anymore and you’ll stop clinging onto me— understood?” Ao’nung says lowly as he steps closer to you, his lips dangerously close to your ear as he utters his words. You nod silently, holding your breath as you wait for him to finally pull away.
“Freak” He chuckles before he pulls away and uses force to push you— causing you to stumble and collide onto the sand with a loud thud. Your face hits the ground first, the impact causing you to feel winded and your new wound to throb instantly. You feel hot tears trail down your face as you watch them leave, laughing amongst themselves as they playfully push each other.
You knew he didn’t like you but you never thought he’d do something so cruel. You’ve been nothing but kind and caring toward him and he repays you by throwing it in your face like this. You no longer saw a boy you longed for, you had once dreamed of being his wife but now you saw nothing for the two of you. You meant nothing to him, you only realised that now. How foolish and naive could you have been.
Your hands shake as you reach for your beaded necklace only to find the space absent on your chest, your eyes widen as you quickly shift onto your knees— tears clouding your vision even more as you realise your necklace was broken. The one your mother had painstakingly pieced together for your twelfth birthday was in ruin— the beads and shells strewn across the sand.
You sniffled as you picked up every piece you could find, wiping away the tears from your face with the back of your hand as you did. You barely slept that night, your tears never ending as you replayed every moment again in your head.
The next day you pretend as though everything is normal, you lie to your parents saying that the scar on your forehead was from a graze against coral during your dive. They don’t question it and neither does Tsireya when you meet her after you’ve eaten.
“So clumsy, my sister. Please be more careful” She tuts as she smears some of her mother’s paste over the cut. I smile at her as she lovingly cares for me, far more than her brother ever had.
You pretend he doesn’t exist, seeing as the village isn’t extremely big— you were bound to run into him and his friends. You combat this problem by doing exactly as he asked, you stopped glancing at him— looking at him altogether. You wouldn’t run up to him to try and gain mere minutes of his attention and you didn’t bother suggesting anything anymore. You stopped trying to exist to him.
Ao’nung noticed the drastic change instantly. You didn’t cling onto him or call out to him unnecessarily. You didn’t even glance his way once— not even when he called out to Tsireya to ask her a question whilst you were right by her side. You just focused your attention elsewhere until he walked off.
He should feel relieved. He is to an extent, this is what he’s wanted for years. You’d finally stop nagging him and he could finally find another woman in the village to connect with without you being on his tail. He should be grateful it’s stopped, but he doesn’t feel as satisfied with the change as much as he thought he would.
It was tradition for you to eat with their family every second day, you had been doing it since you were little and Tonowari and Ronal welcomed you with open arms. You were practically like their third child and the sister Tsireya didn’t have yet. Ao’nung is confused when he enters his family’s murui pod and notices that you aren’t there.
“Where is y/n?” Ao’nung questions as he reluctantly sits down in his usual spot. Tsireya is unphased as she answers, too focused on cooking the last of the fish.
“She feels sick so she’s not coming. I’m taking soup for her later”
Ao’nung already knew you weren’t sick and it bothered him slightly that his words would cause you to distance yourself from his family— sure he’d be there but he figured he’d just stay clear of your way. He ate in silence that night, his mind too plagued with thoughts of you to try and converse with his family over dinner.
It’s been weeks since the incident and you’ve managed to keep up with your silence toward Ao’nung. You haven’t spoken a word or barely looked at him and it’s grown easier as the days have passed. You’re wading in the water with your ilu, hand caressing it’s head delicately as you enjoy the fish that swim around you. You wait patiently for Tsireya beside her pod, huffing as you wait longer than you expect.
“Apologies my sister— I was showing the Sully’s some of the village” Tsireya apologises as she stands on the dock, the Omatakiyan kids following behind her. You had heard of their arrival just a day ago but you were out diving when they had first shown up so you missed the theatrics of their arrival.
You introduce yourself to them and they do the same in return, your eye catching onto one of them in particular— one who seems to be the oldest. His eyes were glued onto you first, a look of awe on his face that caused you to look away shyly.
“They will swim with us today. I figured we could both help them…along with Ao’nung and Rotxo” Tsireya says lowly to you when she swims toward you, still keeping a close eye on the Sully kids who paddle toward you. You huff when you see Ao’nung and Rotxo approaching the water, you turn before you can gain his attention and focus on Tuk who’s splashing around.
“You’re a graceful swimmer” Neteyam says after we’ve all swam a few meters away from the marui pods. He purposely lagged behind the group to swim with you, the gesture causing your chest to warm. You smile at him as you stop swimming, causing him to do the same.
“Thank you— I never used to be. I splashed around too much, apparently I looked like I was drowning half of the time” You chuckle, earning a laugh from the older boy.
“Mistakes are what made you such a good swimmer today, you would’ve never learnt without them” Neteyam says wisely.
“You’re definitely the oldest. You are by far the wisest” He smiles at your words before questioning you.
“Do you have siblings of your own?”
“Sadly, no. I was the only child my parents managed to bore. I see the love you share between your siblings, I adore it very much” You state, noting the way there seems to be a glimmer in his eye from your words.
The two of you talk for the rest of the lesson, finding out more about each other bit by bit. Both of you learn more about the forest and Sea people and the way you both grew up— fascinated by the differences between the two. In all honesty you were too engrossed in your own conversation that you had forgotten about the lessons— unlike the others who watched you both from afar.
“I doubt Neteyam learnt anything. He’s been too busy making heart eyes at your friend” Lo’ak teases as he states the obvious infront of the whole group who sit on the rocks away from the water. Ao’nung’s feels his hands ball into a fist at the sight, growing irritated by both of you. The Sully boy had been here for merely a day and he had already won you over. Ao'nung silently wishes it were him that is making you laugh, the reason you wear a smile so big. He looks away bitterly, concealing the fact he's bothered by it.
"You breathe from here" You instruct, mirroring the actions Tsireya had been using on Lo'ak. You notice the way Neteyam's face warms at the feeling of your hands on his skin, his breathing hitching slightly under your touch.
"Just as Lo'ak is doing.... good, just like that" You hum, praising the boy in front of you. You're unaware of the eyes of the boy you had once begged Eywa to court you burning on the sight of you. Ao'nung couldn't tear his eyes away from you, he needed to interfere somehow-- he had seen enough.
"Perhaps I need help with my breathing as well y/n" You hear Ao'nung tease you from across the rocks you're all grouped on. You give him a deadpan look-- your hands still on Neteyam's torso.
"You're not funny" You scoff before turning back toward Neteyam, muttering besides I would let him drown, causing Neteyam to let out a laugh. Ao'nung catches the sight of that, huffing in annoyance he stands to leave.
The days pass and you find yourself growing closer to Jake Sully’s eldest son. You mentor him during your lessons, swim with him even after you’ve finished for the day and explore the reef with him. You both skip dinner most nights to spend that time together— something that his siblings now tease you both about. When you’re together you don’t miss the way he gazes at you longingly sometimes, admiration in his eyes as you show him the beauty of your home.
“Do you miss your home?” You question him as you both sit on the sand, legs practically touching as you both face the water.
“Yeah, I do. The forest was all I ever knew— I didn’t know how beautiful the reefs are. But I’m grateful in the change, it’s led me to you” Neteyam hums and you feel a smile creep onto your face as you glance at him— his eyes already focused on your face.
“You’re a sweet boy, Nete” You lean your head against his shoulder, harnessing the warmth on his skin for your own.
“Meet me here at night. I want to give you something” His words remind you of Ao’nung’s the night he lead you astray— lied to you and embarrassed you in front of his friends. Although you’ve only known Neteyam for a short time, you knew he would never do the same thing.
You agree to meet later before you depart, humming to yourself as you make your way to the chief’s marui pod. You felt guilty for skipping dinner with their family for so long so you decided to attend tonight— despite the fact you didn’t want to see Ao’nung, you would bare his presence for them.
“I see you have been getting along with the Sully boy quite well” Ronal hums as she passes the woven basket full of food to you. Ao’nung scoffs at the mention of Neteyam— silently swearing he would drown him the next chance he gets.
“Neteyam is kind to me and he makes me laugh. He’s a good friend and he’ll be useful here. He’s already learning well” You hum, smiling to yourself at the thought of the boy you were going to meet tonight.
“He’s a forest boy. I still think he’s useless” Ao’nung laughs, forcing you to avert your attention to him. Finally. He thinks to himself, this is the first time tonight that you’ve actually bothered to look at him.
“Skxawng. You’re just jealous y/n found someone better than you” Tsireya hisses at him, causing him to give her a warning look. Before the arguing can continue any further, their parents demand they end it and eat in peace. You stay longer than you expect, busily talking to Ronal and Tsireya— you don’t realise that it’s night fall already and you cut your time short.
“Sorry for leaving so suddenly… I forgot my mother wanted me to help her with weaving” You lie, offering an apologetic smile to the family before you hastily leave their marui pod. Ao’nung eyes you as you walk off, unaware he’s even watching you— you don’t bother pretending to walk back to your own home.
You’re pulled away and pushed up against a mangrove tree beside you, the suddenness causing you to feel winded almost as you try to make out who’s attacked you. Before you can even let out a sound, their hand clamps over your mouth. It’s far too dark to make out who it is but you recognise his features and the way his hands feel.
It’s Ao’nung.

Arriving with your family at the village of Awa'atlu was a new sort of feeling, not one of dread but more so unfamiliarity with everything. You couldn't help but admire the beauty of the turquoise-colored na’vi and their bigger frames.
You followed quietly behind your brother as he copied the actions of your father showing the people you meant no harm. You hid trying to make yourself smaller before coming to a stop in the middle as you all waited for the chief and tsahik to arrive.
As you stood beside your older brother Neteyam despite the situation you were oddly relaxed in the new environment, for you everything looked so pretty. Your tail swayed back and forth gently, slowly in a relaxed manner. You weren’t focused on anything until you heard two voices behind you and Neteyam, and your ears twitched at one distinct laugh because a small whimper slipped past your parted lips as you felt your sensitive tail be tugged on.
You felt eyes on you, they made your body heat up, but you pushed aside whatever thoughts crossed your mind. Aonungs gaze was penetrating, he was accessing you, no doubt he thought you were beautiful with your slender yet curvy body. He wanted you in that moment more than he’s ever wanted anything, but he knew better, he was a player, he didn’t settle, didn’t love. He didn’t know how.
You turned around quickly a frown on your lips as you looked up at the male who pulled your tail, your eyes catching his unrelenting gaze. Whatever words you had died on your lips and instead of speaking you looked away doing your best to ignore the intense look he gave you. You felt Neteyam pat your head gently before looking up at the chief as he spoke.
"Toruk Makto and his family will stay with us. Treat them as our brothers and sisters. They do not know the sea so they will be like babies taking their first breath. Teach them our ways so they do not suffer the shame of being useless. My son Aonung and daughter Tsireya will teach the Sully kids" Tonorwari said before dismissing everyone, leaving no room for protest especially from his eldest son.
Soon you and your family were shown your new home and getting situated before resting until tomorrow.

The next morning you and your siblings met with Tsireya, Aonung, and Rotxo before getting split up into groups to help you all focus. Tsireya would be teaching Loak and Tuk, Rotxo with Neteyam and Kiri, and Aonung with you. Aonung didn't say much as he led you off somewhere to begin teaching you.
You were aware of the looks he gave you occasionally, as he led you off, he was curious about you, about your life but he didn’t say anything. He was for once at a loss for words and you were okay with that, the silence was nice and comforting.
You sat across from him; eyes wide as he went over the hand signs once more. Looking down at your own hands as you attempted to copy his movements, you felt proud of yourself each time you got something right. You were so focused on watching your hands and repeating the signs that you didn't notice Aonung staring at you with wonder.
Finally looking up you caught his eyes and smiled happily, your pale green eyes shining with happiness, your smile alone caused Aonung to blush a bit before looking away.
"Aonung?" You called him as you both sat side by side, he had just finished teaching you breathing techniques. Looking over at him as you waited patiently for him to answer.
“Hm.” He mumbled just loud enough for you to hear him.
“What else can you teach me?” Your voice held a certain level of curiosity as you stared at him, your tail swaying around lazily. You saw him sit up straighter as he seemed to be thinking over all the possibilities of what he could teach you. Anoungs’ thoughts were full of many things he found himself getting excited at the thought of teaching you. It was quiet for a moment aside from the sounds of your relaxed breathing.
“I can teach you many things. I will teach you if you teach me.” He stated, his blue eyes finally meeting yours.
You tilted your head, a few of your braids falling into your face as you thought it over before nodding slowly. “Teach you what?” Your browbones raised in confusion, what could he possibly want you to teach him.
“Teach me how to love.”
»——————⋆◦ 𖥸 ◦⋆——————«
Over the next few weeks, it started with soft, innocent touches during training periods. You'd feel the touches of his fingers grazing against your own, or the feeling of his hand lingering on your lower back and abdomen. It was never anything more, yet you couldn't wait to be near him.
Aonung couldn't help himself, he had to be touching you, he craved the smallest bits of contact with you. When he wasn't picking on or bullying your siblings, he was being sweet to you, learning. He'd never actually admit that his asking you to teach him how to love was just an excuse to get closer to you.
Moments like now with you standing between his legs as he sat before you, he had a bruise on his face a nice bruise at that. "Ahh, Lo'ak got you good. serves you right maybe next time you'll stop to think before you pick on my sister again," you whispered as you applied healing cream to his bruised cheek.
You were disappointed but his fingers rubbing at your hips as he held you close made your heart melt a little. "I'm sorry... I won't do it again. Aonung knew one thing he hated the look you gave him as you tended to him. His grip tightened on your hips as he pulled you closer, you dropped our hands to his shoulders watching him with wide eyes. You both stared at each other before you saw him leaning closer and before you knew it you felt his lips on yours, it was a soft kiss that grew heated. His nails digging into your skin, his hold bruising but you loved it, loved how he held you like he'd lose you. your arms wrapped around his neck, pulling him as close as well, taking your time to deepen the kiss to fight him for control.
Aonungs hands moved down to grab your ass, he groaned a little as he finally pulled away from the kiss. His eyes clouded with lust as he stared at you taking in the look of your half-lidded eyes and parted lips, he was pleased with himself. He rested his head on your shoulder letting himself rest before he began placing kisses against your heated skin, his hot open-mouthed kisses trailed up to your neck. You let out soft quiet moans and whimpers that drove him crazy, he wanted more of your sweet sounds to invade his ears and soon enough he was biting and sucking on your skin, littering your neck with his marks.
You felt him pull away leaving you dazed and needy for him, the smell of your arousing filling his nose pulling a low growl from him. biting down on your lip as you stood there processing the moment before he pushed you away. "Aonung?" you called softly but he was already out of the healing pod.
To say you were dumbfounded was an understatement, how could he kiss you like that and then just leave like nothing happened. All you could do was sigh as you cleaned up everything you used to tend to him. Once you were sure everything was back to how it was before you used them you left to go back to your family home.
A few hours had passed since the incident, and it was now eclipse and you were speaking with your father when Neteyam dragged Aonung in with his hand wrapped around the back of the boy’s neck. “Tell them what you told me.” Neteyam told him you watched in confusion until he started speaking. “We took Lo’ak beyond the reef and he has not returned.”
You gasped before rushing up to leave when you were stopped by Aonung’s grip on your arm, hid hold was soft. Looking down at his hand you roughly pulled away with a hiss that had him flinching back, “So help me if anything has happened to my brother... I will hate you forever.” Your usually sweet voice had lost any softness it held as you spoke to him in that moment, and it broke his heart. He prayed to the great mother that your brother was fine, he knew in that moment he’d be absolutely lost if he lost you due to his own stupidity.
As you rushed outside a horn blew meaning your brother had returned home, immediately you rushed to his side checking him after your father gave him a quick once over. “He’s fine, he’s fine, just a few scratches.” Your mother came up and she checked him briefly, “I pray for the strength that I will not pluck the eyeballs out of my youngest son.” Neytiri hissed. In any other moment you would have laughed but you were just as worried.
“No, my son knows better than to take him outside the reef, the blame is his.” Tonorwari said, giving Aonung a disappointed look as he made him kneel, ears flat against his head. You wanted to hate him, but you knew you couldn’t despite him nearly getting your brother killed.
Jake ushered you all to leave when Lo’ak spoke up making you hiss quietly. “No this is not Aonungs fault, this was my idea and Aonung tried to talk me out of it really.” You shared a look with Neteyam before you tugged your brother long after your parents. You gently rubbed Lo’aks back as he got scolded before he walked off, you caught him speaking to Aonung before he turned his attention to you. The moment he stepped towards you, you shook your head and turned in the direction your family was going in.
»——————⋆◦ 𖥸 ◦⋆——————«
For the next few weeks, you avoided Aonung like the plague as well as successfully making up excuses and brushing off questions asked by the others. You were doing a good job of avoiding him until now, he stood in front of you with a frown, ears flat against his head.
"Speak to me please, yell at me, hit me but please stop ignoring me," he begged quietly.
"You nearly cost me a brother and for what??" you yelled pushing at his larger frame. "I do not wish to see you again Aonung, I will train with Tsireya and Rotxo."
“Look I’m sorry okay! I was scared. Y/n.” he frowned softly as he grabbed your arm before moving to grab your face gently. He held onto your face firmly within his hands. “Before you I didn’t know how to love, how to feel anything other than pleasure from random girls.” He confessed.
You simply stared at him, your eyes looking over his face before you caught his blue ones, you wanted to look away, but you couldn’t, so you let your body relax as you listened to him.
“These few months when I first asked, I didn’t know you’d actually teach me how to love, I thought I was incapable of such things.” His words were surprisingly soft even for him, but he continued pouring his heart out. “I knew from the moment I saw you; I was yours, but I needed a reason. A reason to get you to fall for me like I did you. To love me as I love you.”
He pulled away; his eyes held nothing but truth as you watched him. “Y/n.. I see you baby please.”
“I see you ma’nungie.”
You barely had time to react when you felt your back being pressed up against a rock and his lips on yours, the kiss was heating and rough, the clashing of teeth sounding as he put everything into the kiss. Your hands moved up to tangle into his hair as you pulled him closer.
He dug his nails into your waist drawing a small gasp from your lips and in that moment, he pushed his tongue into your mouth, letting it caress and explore every inch of your mouth. Without breaking skin contact he began leaning hot kisses along your neck as his hands worked at removing your loincloth, small moans slipping past your lips as his kisses against your skin became more aggressive.
He let out a small growl as he nipped and sucked on your neck, leaving marks in his way until he finally got your bottom have naked, his fingers lightly brushing over your dripping wet cunt.
He rubbed your slit a few times murmuring “Look at how wet you are for me...” whined a little as you rocked against his fingers teasing your slit trying to get any sort of friction you could find. “I haven’t even touched you yet and you’re so needy for me.”
You let out a small whine each time he got close to entering you but never giving into your whines. “Tell me what you need yawne..” he whispered against your neck before pulling away to look over your flushed face.
“Need to feel you inside...” with the gentlest of touches you felt his fingers graze over your swollen clit, the touch was like that of a feather just barely brushing against your cheek and that infuriated you. “Aonung.. please fuck...”Youu did your best to rock your hips doing your best to get his fingers where you so desperately needed them.
“Touch me.. please... make me yours.” You begged.
He could help but give into you letting his finger slowly inch their way inside your sopping wet pussy. “Oh fuck...” You cried out letting your head fall back against the rock, your walls gripping onto his fingers with greed as he began moving them slowly at first, taking his time to stretch you out, preparing your right walls for him. His fingers were much bigger than your slender digits, his filling you up, reaching deeper as he slowly brought you a different type of pleasure.
“S’tight.. can’t wait to have this pretty pussy wrapped around my cock.” Aonung mused as he watched his fingers disappearing into your needy cunt with each thrust of his hand.
Your mind was muddled, in a hazy mess of pleasure as he continued to fuck you with his fingers your legs shaking slightly as you feel the familiar tightening, your orgasm was close and before you could reach that peak your body so desperately needed it was ripped away when his fingers were no longer buried deep inside you.
Your felt tears build up as you tried to hold back a sob, doing your best to blink away the tears as you looked up into those eyes you loved. “Shh baby.. don’t cry m’gonna fuck you now... fuck you so good.”
Aonung had already discarded his loincloth as he rubbed his swollen tip against your entrance, he was admiring that way you looked with tears in your eyes as you silently begged him to fuck you. He’d be lying if the sight of you so needy for him didn’t make his cock harder.
Without so much as another thought he was sliding his length inside of you slowly, drawing a loud moan from your lips before it was being muffled by his hand on your mouth. “Shh yawne.. we’re still out in the open.” The thought alone had you immediately clenching around him drawing a loud groan from his lips.
“Fuck... fuck the thought of getting caught turns you on? You’re such a fucking whore...” he whispered quietly as he finally pushed his entire length inside completely. The tip of his member brushing against the tip of your cervix had your eyes rolling back into your head, whatever air was left in your lungs now completely gone.
He stayed still letting you adjust to him before he pulled out slowly before thrusting back in roughly, his fingers now inside your mouth pressing down on your tongue to silence any noises you were bound to make. Your walls fluttered around his cock, gripping onto him tightly causing his head to fall back as he growled out.
Your vision was blinded by stars with each of his rough thrust, nothing about the way he thrusted and used your body was gentle. His thrust are hard and rough, each thrust brushing up against your sweet spot over and over. Your mind was going blank, you couldn’t focus on anything except the unbridled feeling of pleasure. Incoherent mumbles and noises slipped past your mouth.
He enjoyed the sight of you like this, his fingers fucking into your mouth, drool falling from your mouth and down your throat. He found pleasure in making you gag every in a while as he fucked into your sopping yet pussy, this only fueled him to go harder and faster.
You felt that familiar feeling building back up, you were close, so desperately close you needed the release. Needed to come, your eyes rolled back as your walls tightened around his cock causing his hips to stutter in their movements. His free hand founds its way between your bodies rubbing quick circles against your clit.
“That’s it pretty girl... let go... come for me baby.” He cooed quietly against your ear.
As if your body belonged to him in every aspect of the word you found your releasing around him, juices coating his cock in your essence. He growled softly as he bit down on your neck just as his thrust became sloppy, he made you ride out your orgasm as he chased his.
“Gonna fill you up... breed you... make your tummy round with my baby...” he cried out against your skin just as his seed spilled out into your awaiting womb. His hips moving gradually slowing down until they came to a full stop.
You laid against the rock panting heavily as you let your body recover from everything, Aonung kept you close as he peppered your face in soft kisses murmuring about how much of a good girl you were for taking him. Carefully pulling out of you he lowered you both to the ground, cradling your body against his as he rubbed your back. You were more aware of everything now, ears twitching as the faint sound of his words.
“Thank you for teaching me how to love, yawne.”

Boys Don’t Cry
Tumblr media
Dad!Ao’nung x Sully!reader
IN WHICH Ao’nung cries for the first time in his life after the death of your son, but you’re here to help him through it.
Warnings: ANGST, death, grief of a son, our bby crying :(.
READ Fire Drill first to understand, this is Ao’nung’s side of the story.
Tumblr media
Ao’nung had never cried in his entire life, other than the moment where he had been stripped from his mother’s womb and into the lands of Pandora. He had always been a quiet baby, always the type to cause trouble that would make him laugh rather than wail.
Growing up in a strict household had only strengthened Ao’nung’s lack of emotional display  as he grew up, always feeling like the future Olo’eyktan should not shed any tears. He remembers the times where he would make fun of his more sensible friends for crying over the smallest things, making them feel small for being able to express their feelings. He thought that crying was something boys were not supposed to do, that they were supposed to appear strong for their families when bad things happened.
Sure he had been reprimanded by Ronal and Tonowari countless of times for his behaviour and recklessness, and he would often come back from hunts with a couple of gashes and wounds littering his skin, but never a single tear to graze his cheeks. He would grit his teeth until pressing down on them would hurt, trying to swallow back his pain so he didn’t cry.
His sister, Tsireya was very fragile of nature as she inherited their mother’s more hidden side. She was sensible to things around her, and she was never scared to show how she felt. Sometimes during their youth, Ao’nung would tease her and call her a crybaby whenever she’d cry about the smallest things, causing her to sob even harder and getting reprimanded by his father.
Soon you would get to know that the boy was emotionally constipated. It had taken it a while for you both to confess, yet alone for you to comprehend that he had feelings for you. Those same feelings that you had accidently revealed to him one night, and he was glad, because that had allowed him to act out on his own. Soon, your love had developed into more than just being mates and sharing a bond through tsaheylu. You had both created a baby through that said love, and Ao’nung was elated at the news.
He hadn’t cried when your son was born, unlike you that was spent and just happy that he was finally here. In some way, he felt prideful of not being soft-hearted like his family. He felt strong because to Ao’nung, boys don’t cry.
-
Ao’nung had never cried in his entire life, not when his son was born, not when he laid wailing excruciatingly in your tired arms. Crying does not always represent happiness or sadness, he didn’t need to cry to show that he felt joyful of the welcoming of your new baby. The warm smile on his face was enough to tell you that he was more than happy that his son was finally here, and he had vowed to himself on that day that he would be strong for the both of you.
Though when the humans and recoms came to claim your father in their death grip, he didn’t know what would happen. Ao’nung watched as you poured your heart out for the unfortunate death of the oldest Sully son, your brother Neteyam. His death gripped your heart like it had never been held before, crushing it in its cruel hold. His lips turned into a frown as he held you in his arms, your shoulders shaking as you trembled from the aftermath of your sobs.
The humans were cruel people, claiming what is not theirs and destroying whoever and whatever is in their way. He had sworn to himself on that day that he would kill every single one of them for making you suffer in such a way and that your tears would not be in vain. But as he watched as his forever home vanished in the midst of the flames, his heart could only pick up the place.
You were frozen beside him as you watched the marui that you both shared being engulfed by the fire. Ao’nung remembers not thinking straight as he gripped your arm in a tight grip as he dragged your frozen state into your home. He remembers the blood curdling screams that you let out as you cradled your deceased son, unpitied by the Great-Mother.
He couldn’t remember exactly when his eyes had started tearing up, the burning feeling of arriving tears rising in his throat. The sight of your mutilated son was more than what his heart could take, and soon the fresh tears began pouring down his cheeks freely. There wasn't much that he could let out, no more than 3 tears rolled down his grimy cheeks, but they were 3 too much.
His tattoos burnt his skin as he felt undeserving of them. The ones marking his arms up to his chin were the ones that he had acquired after passing his rights of passage, deeming him a strong and valuable adult, but how could a strong man fail to protect his own family? How could he have let his own son’s life slip out of his fingers when he knew that he could’ve protected him.
The guilt was overbearing, shifting him out of reality as he thought of the little amount of time that he had been able to spend with his son. It ate him up from in to out, leaving him feeling like an empty shell void of any emotions. The feeling of his mother’s warm palm over his arm was enough to snap him out of his derivative dreaming, the harsh sounds of your wailing reaching his tense ears. He was so distraught, pupils blown and without knowing where to look anymore.
He didn’t want to look at your poor son as he laid unmoving in your arms, but the guilt of not looking would soon catch up to him if he didn’t. Ronal’s hands cupped her son’s cheeks, ripping him out of his trance once more. He could make out a few distinct words that his mother was talking to him, but the ringing in his head was far too overwhelming for him to even concentrate. His lips wobbled and his ears were flat against his skull.
Ronal’s own distraught state was far too much for him to comprehend, so he gently peeled her hands off of him.
She had never fully accepted you like her own daughter, not even when you had publicly announced that you were mated to her son. But whether she liked it or not, you were family now just like your son was to her, and family doesn’t like seeing family suffer. She couldn’t even imagine the pain that you and  Ao’nung currently felt, as she placed a hand on her swelling stomach.
Later that night, things were dead silent in his family’s marui. He had come for a simple thing, and it was to fetch fish for you to eat tonight, because he needed to take care of you no matter how he felt. It didn’t matter if he felt emotionally destroyed, he had made it his duty to take care of you while you grieved.
Tsireya’s frown seemed permanent ever since the events had happened, not knowing how to comfort her usually stoic brother. She had never seen him like this, so distant and quiet because he was unable to express his own feelings, and it hurt her more than anything to see her only brother suffer in silence.
Hell, the silence of their marui was suffocating on its own. Tonowari couldn’t even approach his grieving son, because damn was he also emotionally constipated. He cursed himself for his inability of expressing himself freely, that if he wasn’t then maybe his son would’ve been confiding the thoughts that were bothering him so much to them. He knew that it weighed him down, so much that he could not even stand the pressure even if he sat on his knees.
Ronal’s guilt as she rethought of 2 years ago when she had agreed with Tonowari to let you seek Uturu
in their village. Maybe if she had been stronger and had strictly denied her mate, Ao’nung would be happy off with someone else right now. There would’ve never been a war upon the lands of Awa’atlu and her son would be smiling amongst his own little family. Though she knew it was wrong for her to think of this at such a time, because she knew that the love that Ao’nung held for you and your son is great, and he wouldn’t exchange the both of you for anything in this world.
For, she had a close connection to her children unlike anyone else on this planet did. A mother does tsaheylu right after birth with their babies, and the emotional bond that they share is like no other. She knows when her children are hurting, she can sense it, she can see it. Ronal can’t help herself but to treat Ao’nung as though he was the fragile kid that he had never been, but nothing seemed to break through that shell of his. Maybe, she believed that it was better off to let him sort out his feelings with you, that he would feel better to confine in you for now, that he would eventually open himself to them.
The violent images of his son’s scorched body and the vile smell of demise was still fresh in his mind, the events replaying like a broken video.
So they watch as Ao’nung walks away, a plate full of fish held tightly in his unrelenting grip. Ronal knew that there was always a light in darkness, he just needed to look through the right path, and she was sure that soon enough you both would.
-
When you awoke to the cold feeling of emptiness beside you, there was a nagging feeling that tugged at your chest. Despite that the pain of losing your son was still swirling raw in your chest, you knew that Ao’nung getting up before you meant that something was wrong. It wasn’t that you usually woke up late, no, further than that even. It was that Ao’nung usually waited for you to get up before starting his chores. Those were the little things that you had caught onto in your relationship, and it was damn time that they came in use.
You raised a hand to rub the grogginess out of your freshly opened eyes, fingers digging oddly pleasurably into your eyes. Then, when the grogginess had disappeared, you could see your husband’s back turned away from you. Ao’nung was cutting up a few fruits as he dropped the pieces into a large bowl before him, his ears were flattened upon his head and his tail laid flat against the material of your temporary marui. Given that the one where you previously lived on was now in shambles.
Plus the both of you wouldn’t have been able to live in the home in which your son had passed away in, it would always be a dark spot on your hearts.
Painfully, you stood up from your previous spot as you approached your husband. You kneeled down behind him and he visibly flinched when you brought a hand down to rest upon his shoulders. Though you didn’t take it to heart. Slowly by slowly, you began creeping your hands around his torso as though not to scare him and you embraced him warmly from the back. It was silent, but for once the silence was not comfortable. It was stuffy and suffocating, full of unsaid words that were waiting for clarity.
“I’m so sorry yawne, I never intended for things to be like this.” you excused yourself like any of this was your fault. Like the recoms following your father and unabling you from having a good life was any of your fault. Ao’nung was silent, more than he had been yesterday and your chest quivered as you started crying again. You were tired of it, tired of feeling like all you could do was cry for this nasty feeling of emptiness to leave your body.
You watched from the corners of your eyes as his lips wobbled at your words, despite the tears blurring your vision. Ao’nung turned his head away from you as he hid his vulnerability, and your heart ached at the sight of your husband. You didn’t want him to feel like he had to hide how he felt around you, or feel like he had to be embarrassed or scared that you would somewhat judge him if he came true to how he really felt.
“Hey,” you gently called out for him, unravelling your hands from his torso as you moved to sit in front of him. The dish of fruits was long forgotten as you moved it to the side to take its place. Ao’nung’s lips were sealed in a tight line and you could now see the tears that gathered in his eyes, unable to escape his waterline. You felt your heart drop down to your feet as it was only the second time that you had seen your mate cry, but now you were in a mental state where you could help him.
You took his face into your hands like his mother had done the past night, and it felt all too comforting to him. His cheeks burnt with discomfort but you were not about to let him cry his sorrows alone, you were his wife after all. Your thumbs ran soothing circles upon his cheeks as you waited for him to turn his head to you, leaving him the time to feel comfortable enough so that you wouldn’t have to force him upon it.
“It’s okay to feel gloomy after what's happened, you don’t have to hide yourself from me,” you whispered out the last part, your throat burning as you felt more tears rising up in your eyes. You blinked them away as they fell graceful down your darker skin. “I’m not going to judge you, I'm not going to tell anyone.” you pleaded through tears and soon enough he turned his face towards you.
You watched as he completely crumbled, his lips dropping impossibly further down into a bigger frown before he pushed himself further into your embrace, his arms wrapping around your waist as he hugged you. Ao’nung felt embarrassed when you didn’t berate him for crying, feeling ashamed that he even felt the need to hold back whitin your presence.
His face was buried in your neck as he sobbed his sorrows away, your arms intertwining behind his neck as you swayed him back and forth. He knew that you were loyal and that he trusted you with his entire life, he knew that you would keep your promise of zipping it. He felt so much relief as he sobbed into your arms, your body warm and close to him.
For, boys do cry, and so do men. Men who have lost their families, their homes, the ones that they loved. Men who are mature enough to understand that crying does not render you as weak, and soon Ao’nung would learn to open his heart to that thought. He felt safe sharing his burdens and sorrows to you, and you always listened to him with open ears just like he did with you.

Fuck Off
Lo'ak x Nerd Reader
Series Masterlist
Prt 7 of the Fucking The Nerd Series
Summary: lo'ak finally realizes his mistakes and flies over to make right what he did wrong.
Warning: none
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yn/3rd person pov
A country over from yn, lo'ak sits in his bed lonely normally at this time him and yn would be in his bed enjoying whatever show was on.
Yn would be giggling at each joke that was said while laying on his chest but now he was all alone he hadn't even tried to see you after what happened but now he's starting to realize his mistake.
He didn't even listen to your side of the story or even taken into account that you don't even know her, lo'ak sighed deeply and took out his phone to scroll through insta.
He was bored out of his mind ari'ek has gone m.i.a on him and all he can actually think about was you.
"What the fuck" he hissed as he came upon your post with Aonung and Rotxo who were cuddling you his eyes flaired with anger.
"Best holiday ever" he hissed out as he read the caption but when his eyes flicked to your face his heart filled with sadness you were smiling brightly.
When he left you at school tears were running down your face and he did nothing about it "I have to make things right" he muttered and grabbed his coat.
-Time skip-
Now back with you, you were cuddling with Aonung on your bed as you talked about random things as your hands played with his.
"I'm glad your enjoying yourself here" he murmured his eyes never leaving mine "I am I totally forgot how fun this place is" I smiled.
He paused for a moment before fully taking my hand in his "d-do you ever" he paused taking a deep breath "do you ever think about moving back" he asked making my breath hitch.
"Yea I do bu-" I was interrupted by someone calling out my name my eye brows frowned is that, no it can't be "yn" he called out again.
"Who is that" aonung asked as we got up to look outside my heart clenched as I caught sight of him "it's lo'ak" I whispered as I made my way out my room and down the stairs.
"The guy that left you" aonung muttered as he followed me and grabbed my hand stopping me from opening the door "are you sure you want to see him" he asked.
I looked between him and the door "I just have to" I murmured and he looked at me for a second before slowly nodding and let me go.
I let out a shakey breathe before opening up the door my eyes flattering as I came face to face with lo'ak "w-what do you want" I muttered.
He looked kinda panicked as I spoke "I came to apologize" he whispered his eyes flickering between me and aonung.
"About" he can hear the anger in my tone as I spoke which made him gulp "yn I realized my mistake and I want to make it up to you" my lip quivered.
I looked down at the ground I didn't know what to do I still care for him but my feelings had been divided because of aonung.
"I think its best you leave-"

enjoy the silence II | ao’nung.
ao’nung x fem!sully!reader
previous part | part two | next part
Tumblr media
synopsis: Ao’nung’s words had hurt you, but his contradictory actions hurt you more. You realize your mistake in your idea that you’d be a good match, but it may have already cost you your life.
genre: angst.
contains: more pining from reader, mixed signals, ilu riding. mentions of near death experience, suffocation, overwhelming feelings. ao’nung literally being so confusing. requited love after all?
a/n: welcome to the second installment of enjoy the silence! the first part ended up being posted two days earlier than expected (the last time i ever schedule a post) and still needed scenes added but, i’m so happy you all loved it so much anyway! i tagged everyone who asked to be tagged. thank you guys so much for the support!
The morning after Ao’nung had said those things to you by the shore came quickly. After he had stalked off, you went back to your mauri, purposely taking the long way home to be with your thoughts for a while. Did you read his signs wrong? Was he even giving any signs to begin with? Or had you been clouded with the illusion of being a perfect pair that you hadn’t even considered how Ao’nung felt?
Your siblings could feel your slight sadness when you arrived back, but no one had questioned it much, save for a few, “Feelin’ alright?”s from your father. Moving to Awa’atlu had affected everyone, they had felt the overwhelming ache of homesickness every once in a while, they understood you were feeling down. If only they knew, your once source of happiness was now your source of distress.
Despite that, you weren’t angry with Ao’nung. Not at all. You understood where he was coming from completely. As the future Olo’eyktan, he needs to protect his people. That means protecting them from humans, and your family had brought that threat. If anything, it’s natural for him to be hostile towards you. That didn’t mean it didn’t hurt. But you were resilient.
You just had to prove to him you were more than what was running in your veins.
Today, like the past few days, was filled with training. Ao’nung was paired up with you, again. You felt uneasy at first, not wanting to make him more uncomfortable with you. He gave Tsireya a look, almost begging to switch partners. She only rolled her eyes and smiled when you reached them.
He must’ve told her how he felt about you, or maybe she had heard his harsh words to you last night. Either way, you’re sure she smacked him upside the head for upsetting you. Tsireya took a genuine liking to you, and she may or may not have been doubling her efforts in winning over the Sully family due to her liking of Lo'ak.
Once all together in the shallow water, Ao’nung began to call to the Ilu. Almost immediately, they swam up and circled him. It was mesmerizing, watching him call them so effortlessly, how they swam up to him so fondly.
“These are Ilu. If you want to live here, you have to ride,” he explained. You were excited, you had little trouble claiming your Ikran, surely this is no different.
Ao’nung faced you, pointing, “the demon girl will go first.” Your eyes widened, suddenly intimidated. But, you had to show him you weren’t just some forest girl with five fingers.
You swam up to an Ilu, petting it. It clicked at you, nudging you affectionately. This creature was so gentle, so sweet to you. Your Ikran was nothing but the opposite when you claimed it; squawking loudly, attempting to throw you over the edge of the cliff. You gained some confidence from its gentle demeanor, and climbed on top. Tsireya and Ao’nung swam up beside to keep the Ilu still and allow you to make a bond.
“Make the bond, and hold here,” Tsireya gestured to the handle. You pulled your queue from behind you, bare, pink nerves ready to make a connection. You took a deep breath and made the bond with your Ilu. Suddenly, you felt its being as whole, as a part of you. You felt its breath, its fins, how strong it is, how eager it was to swim with a new driver.
“Breathe from here, remember. Hold your breath when you dive, the Ilu is fast. But it will know when to go back up for air. It feels you, you feel it,” Ao’nung placed his hand on your upper stomach like he had done when training your breathing. You gasped quietly, not expecting such a gentle, forward gesture from him. Especially not after last night’s exchange.
Your golden eyes made contact with his, your brows furrowed in confusion. Hadn’t he just reprimanded you for just merely existing? Now he was touching you so delicately, like you’d break from too much pressure. Had last night really just been a bit? Just a teasing joke? Maybe he didn’t hate you after all?
His mixed signals made you feel fuzzy, your brain suddenly so confused. The Ilu felt it, too, and began to thrash around from the uncertainty you felt at Ao’nung’s touch. He removed his hand from you, much to your disappointment, to calm the Ilu back down to stillness.
You shook the thoughts about him out of your head, you had to focus. “I’m ready, I can do this.”
“Start slow, don’t hurt yourself,” Ao’nung’s tone was firm, but worried. Perhaps he did care for you.
You took another deep breath, and went off into the water.
You started slow, like Ao’nung instructed, getting comfortable with being pulled through the water by the Ilu. Gradually you sped up, gliding through the reef with ease.
The rush of adrenaline that flowed through you only made you more and more confident. The beautiful reef had you hypnotized, you felt so much while being wished around the glowy underwater plants and animals. The swirl of colors dizzied you in only the best way, leaving you in awe.
You reached a hand out to brush against the foliage as you flew past it. It was so soft to the touch. It only reminded you of Ao'nung's.
What he said greatly hurt you, joke or not. The contrast of his words then and now was so confounding to you. And with the thought of him back in your mind, you became tense, now losing your focus. You lost your balance on the Ilu along with your secure grip.
This thrashed you around some, but you could regain your composure. Unfortunately, it was proving difficult.
You underestimated the force of the water. Your grip on the Ilu faltered more with the ever growing speed. You couldn’t keep up, the pressure was too much. The rush of the water was now pulling you back, straining your limbs. Dreadful fear filled you when you realized, inevitably you’d be knocked off and sent into waters you weren’t familiar with at all, with animals and creatures you’d never interacted with.
You had underestimated the difficulty of riding an Ilu, just as you had underestimated Ao’nung’s impact on you. It was all too similar.
At first, you’d been confident and blinded by excitement. Excitement of meeting your seemingly perfect match. Excitement of trying something new. You weren’t careful, not assessing the situation completely before you dived in headfirst.
You didn’t take Ao’nung himself into account, how powerful his actions, his feelings are just as the water’s force is on your body now. Oh, how your impulsivity ricocheted back to you, but ten times stronger. Whiplash from Ao’nung’s mixed signals and the rush of the current you’re trying to push through.
You had to let go, you realized.
You had to let go of the Ilu before you hurt yourself. You had to let go of your delusional idea of yours and Ao’nung’s relationship before it drastically hurts you. Or him. You couldn't bear the thought of hurting him, in any way.
He didn’t feel the same, he never would. Spiraling down this idea would only complicate things more. You needed to let go.
With that, you took your grip off the Ilu, ripped from the back of the creature and sent off into the water.
Your breath had begun to ran out and you were so far down, clouded with thoughts of needing air and needing Ao'nung. Neither would come to you soon enough.
Unbeknownst to you, a pair of azure eyes caught sight of your descending figure before it was too late. He couldn't bear the thought of you being hurt. The thought alone was what was driving him to swim to you faster.
Ao'nung needed you, too.
