Plots with lots of details, twists, and turns can be fun, but I love something simple and really, really clever. For that reason, author-illustrator Kate Read's "One Fox: A Counting Book Thriller" (2019) may be my new favourite counting book for young kids. With lushly colourful painted illustrations and just a handful of well-chosen words (and numbers), Read takes her audience on a rollercoaster adventure, as a fox tries to sneak into the local henhouse and gets the surprise of his life! I received a copy of this book from the publisher for consideration for our book club's #FindMeStories_2019 Best Picture Books list, and as I said, it was definitely one of my favourites. TACO TUESDAY! 🌮🌮🌮 So, I'm sure lots of you already know and love Adam Rubin and Daniel Salmieri's awesome "Dragons Love Tacos" (2012). BUT ... my honourary nephew and I both read it this past week, and felt equally adamant that EVERYONE needs this book. Plus we really love tacos, too. So it seemed important to share it in case any of you were missing out. "Dragons Love Tacos" is a hilarious letter to kids about everything you could possibly want to know regarding the dragon obsession with tacos (including their odd aversion to spicy salsa). Silly Saturday! This book just barely qualifies as a "classic", having first been published only a decade ago. But with a 10th Anniversary edition already out, "Barry the Fish With Fingers" (2009) is clearly a hit worth sharing. I always love a bit of wordplay, and Sue Hendra's adorable story about a fish who (shh, it's a surprise) makes himself some fingers with, well...fish fingers...is a lovely fun read-aloud for a dull day.
