That post about people refusing to read fic that's under 100k or 300k has really gotten under my skin.

I have to wonder: is that really the prevailing opinion? Is that how the majority of readers view fic now?

Because you guys, I don't write long fic. I never have. The longest fic I've ever written was "blue", and it topped out at 76k. (There is another fic with my username on it that is quite a bit longer, but the credit was a courtesy; a friend wrote the whole thing, I just contributed some ideas. Tbh, she deserves 100% of the credit on it.)

Does this mean I should just. Not bother anymore? Because I'm starting to feel like there's not much point to posting, if it's guaranteed that my fic won't be read.

I just posted another Cloud/Biggs that was about 2800 words. Not a popular pairing, I know, but it hasn't gotten very many hits either. "Spellbound", the Dimileth Beauty & the Beast AU, was just under 20k. "secure yourself to heaven" almost hit 40k. This new little Kouao thing I'm writing is 2k at the moment but probably won't be much more than that.

I've been writing fanfic for at least 30 years. I'm not a long-plot kind of writer. I never have been. I shouldn't have to feel like that's what I have to do in order to have a readership. But right now, I gotta tell you, it feels pretty bad.

I mean, I'm not going to stop writing. I actually can't. I've tried, and it never lasts. But a lot of things give me second thoughts about posting, and right now this is a big one.

i feel like a lot of the 'i hate kids' crowd would be more tolerant if they understood that due to a kid's limited experience of the world that 4 hour flight might just be the longest they've ever had to sit still for or that trapped finger might literally be the most pain they've ever felt in their short life or they might not have ever seen a person with pink hair ever so of course they want to touch it or nobody's told them yet that they can't run around the museum and they only just learned cheetahs are the fastest animals so of course they want to put that to the test. how were they supposed to know etc etc.
