Hello, I really admire your dedication and hard work. Your art is very beautiful. I myself am very interested in learning to draw portraits as well. Practicing has gotten me a bit farther already but I’m not very good yet. Could you perhaps recommend any books on drawing? I’ve read that you’re from Germany and because I can speak the language as well, books in both English and German would work for me

I'm not sure if I am the right person to recommend books, because I haven't learned too much from them. I am very much a kinesthetic learner (monkey see, monkey do) and theory usually follows practice for me.

Meaning: I do something, then analyze it, then try to find what worked and what didn't.

A lot of book learning (which is theory first, then practice) just doesn't jive with my brain.

That said, I found Andrew Loomis' books "Drawing the Head and Hands" and "Figure Drawing" rather helpful in understanding the structure of the head, hands and body. It is more focused on constructing your own faces though, instead of recreating likeness (which is an entirely different skill). And I am not entirely sure if I would recommend starting out there, if your aim is to draw recognizable portraits of existing people.

For that, I would recommend looking into the Sight (or Site) Size method and, in extension, the Atelier method of drawing. A good place to start for the Sight Size Method is the Bargue Plates. A collection of reference images that are specifically chosen to teach you to see shape and form and translate that. Sadly, the physical book of the Bargue Drawing course isn't cheap, but I found it incredibly helpful.

Florent Farges on Youtube has some incredibly informative videos about both the Sigh Size method and the full Atelier method of drawing. His videos are only autocaptioned and thanks to his accent not very good, so if you are hearing impaired, there may be some guesswork involved. He is very good at showing what he does, however.

Then, if you want to dive into painting and colour theory, there is not a single book I will recommend more than James Gurney's Color and Light. He has an easy, practice focused approach to explaning and I have had some serious epiphany or five while reading through that book, despite having professionally learned lighting in photography school.

Probably not as helpful as you were hoping, but I'm happy to answer any more questions.

Edit: Oooh, yes! Since Myla mentioned it in the comments and I don’t want it to get lost: Proko on youtube is a fantastic source. I tend to ... uh ... forget about him because I don’t particularly grok his attitude, but you absolutely canNOT argue with his skill and knowledge!

He is an Atelier trained artist, too, so that falls right in line with my recommendations!

Elunara is, as she likes to call herself, “Bugfuck nuts”. Married to three men and a woman simultaneously, she is the very definition of “polyamorous”. But do not let the marriages fool you, she will still have sex with anyone at a whim and has been known to give blowjobs to a guy with a nice set of shoulders. Known as “The Whore” when she worked for the SI:7, she had the highest success rate of any mission specialist in the regime.

Brought to her proverbial knees by an orc that she was targeting, she went from being a methodical killing machine living only for physical touch, to a caring wife and mother, friend, and sibling. Elunara now tends to adopt those she feels in need, and has gone from a lone wolf, to a den mother. But do not think she lost her teeth, because a pissed off Elunara is a sight to behold.

Elunara married the male Orc Grogek first, in a ceremony that included the female Draenei Tulani. Later, she married the human male Jordan, and after quite some time, found a way to marry King Varian Wrynn. Her kids are numerous, but she has only given birth twice. It was through her abilities tha she was able to help Tulani get pregnant with Sinea.

Elunara started life as the daughter of Tyrande Whisperwind, but her tendency to have sex with any male to give her a wink eventually landed her in hot water and got her banished from Darnassus. In the SI:7 she was a rogue, but after a lunatic with a gun shot Jordan in the face, she unlocked as a priestess. Many years of practice, and her penchant for working with stolen magic as a scribe has enabled her to perform amazing feats.

These days, Elunara claims many children, and even some siblings. Her sister Zelinnia is a blood elf she rescued from a maniac orc, her brother Gerald was her spotter in the SI:7 for years, and her sister Jenny is a girl who just needed rescuing from her deranged brother. Mathias Shaw may be the only male capable of controlling Elunara’s erratic behavior, and as such is something of a father to her.

As crazy as everyone thinks, and knows, she is, no one can deny her love for her family, as bizarre as it may be.
