{ A day of Rememberance | Harleen and Jason }
Tumblr media
— Harleen has attempted to change her life.  HQ and her have reached an understanding.  Most days she’s tightly bound in a cage but she still whispers from the background. Of dark things she could and should do, the last testament to the Joker’s control on her life.  But not even today does her other half bother her.
She’s before a gravestone, the same flowers in her hand that she brings, black roses and white lilies.  She knelt down in the black dress that she wore, placing them on it as she tied the stone.
“ — I know I tell you the same thing every year..  I would have helped you.  I tried even...”  A deep and heavy sigh is wracked from her chest.  “...but there was so only so much I could do.  He knocked me out and I found out the next day.  I did it to save my daughter, not that it matter much now...”  She whispered softly.  “ — I remember...even if everyone else forgets.”

Gotham's Selina and Bruce served as a fan surrogate in the latest episode as she went off in search of mayhem maestro Jeremiah Valeska. Though Cameron Monaghan's iniquitous villain remained undiscovered, Francesca Root-Dodson's Ecco made a refreshing return that finally embraced the Harley Quinn characteristics that had long been teased, complete with a revamped origin story. Gotham showrunner John Stephen talked with CinemaBlend about bringing the show's version of Harley Quinn to life through the puddin-tastic Ecco.
A lot of it was like, I'd seen that actress for the first time last year, just seeing the range she has and how good she was working sort of as Jeremiah's henchman. Because we could never do the Joker-Joker, we could also never do Harley Quinn. Well, we thought, 'If we can do a proto-Joker who's not quite the Joker, but who we could draw antecedence to, why couldn't we do the same thing with Harley?' And so we started taking a lot of the same elements of madness and anarchy, and the sort of mad love that Harley has, and placing it into the Ecco character. She plays through the entire season, you know, with Jeremiah, and it's just a really fun, twisted, energizing relationship with the series ending.
Hooray for more Ecco! I can't imagine there were too many Gotham fans out there that were genuinely worried about Ecco possibly meeting her maker in the nearest of futures. After all, she showed off her batty nature during a scene involving a cooperative take on Russian Roulette, which isn't the most fate-friendly game out there.
Speaking of that not-at-all-innocent activity, Ecco got to deliver her quasi-origin story to Selina during the ordeal. She didn't wax on about having been a psychologist within the Arkham system, though the Arleen Sorkin option is still on the table. Instead, Ecco manically showed Selina that her unique mindset comes from the bullet currently stuck in her head.
While we're not quite sure yet what was happening in this woman's life in years previous, it's pretty clear that things took a more villainous turn after she crossed paths with Jeremiah. Ecco was more of the silent type when first introduced, adopting the Mummer mask, but once Jerome's gift unlocked Jeremiah's inner...potential, we'll call it...Ecco's dramatic devolution followed suit.
At some point, Ecco was tasked with proving her devotion to Jeremiah by joining the gun circle, which she survived even though she was one of the unlucky victims. It would definitely be more interesting if that moment did happen only as the No Man's Land arc came into being, in that it would further prove Jeremiah to be heartless and callous even to those in his closest circle.
When speaking with executive producer and showrunner John Stephens about Ecco's Quinn-tessential role in the episode, I asked him if he enjoyed being able to bring various Harley Quinn elements to Ecco's character without needing to adhere to every single familiar detail. His answer:
Oh yeah, absolutely, because you're building on so much. You have so much that came before in all the different versions that you can then, by tweaking certain small elements, you can send it in a very different way. So it's existing not just as this thing itself, but also existing in relationship to what it's commenting upon that came before. So it has this great texture, both as writers when you're working with it, and I think for viewers when they come to it fully informed by the history and that character.
Quite the admirably heady take on adapting an animated character for live-action, wouldn't you say? It does make sense, of course. Gotham as a whole has deconstructed the Batman mythos in order to build it back up in specifically warped ways. But whereas this Bruce Wayne actually will turn into Batman down the road, Ecco and Jeremiah are but stepping stones.
With Ecco, John Stephens and the writers stripped Harley Quinn down to her most essential elements, and repurposed them unto a character meant to serve as a direct inspiration to whoever the "real" Harley will be. Much like how Jerome and Jeremiah's more disturbing characteristics are intended to preface the rise of The Joker proper. (Which obviously still needs to be portrayed by Cameron Monaghan, even if it makes zero logical sense.)
I'm sure all involved at Gotham would love to have been able to please fans by introducing The Joker and Harley Quinn years ago in the same way that the show has been able to use Penguin, Riddler, Mr. Freeze and other iconic villains. Unfortunately, myriad rights and licensing issues have gotten in the way, thanks to theatrical DCEU projects getting preferential treatment. Things are slightly different in Season 5, thanks to DC easing off, but still.
In a way, though, Jeremiah and Ecco can be just as enjoyable, if not more so, than the villains they're representing. After all, they also get to do things that wouldn't even fit the character profiles for Joker and Harley Quinn, which is always fun to see. And that, rather than crafting comic-perfect character adaptations, is one of the main goals in all of this for John Stephens.
That's what it comes down to at the end of the day: it's just fun to watch. It's fun to see that, however canonically pure it might be or not.
I'd also talked with John Stephens about Jeremiah's current whereabouts, and he told me we should expect to see Jeremiah soon, but that we'll actually see his big new plan coming to light before he arrives. And beyond Selina's claw-some turn as Catwoman, Gotham will also be delivering Shane West's Bane to fans very soon, along with more surprises that no one will be able to figure out.

Batman: Arkham Asylum (Game of the Year) Review
Tumblr media
Batman: Arkham Asylum is a third-individual activity game giving you a role as - - you got it, mate - - the Dark Knight himself. The title opens with Batman hustling back to Arkham, Gotham's home for the criminally crazy, with the Joker close by. Appears to be the Clown Prince of Crime broke out half a month prior, yet Batman had the option to find him and once again capture the baddie.
Be that as it may, things are never what they appear with the Joker, so in the wake of getting the wiry neurotic back into the structure - - a structure supplied with many of the Joker's hooligans after a "baffling" fire at their jail - - Mr. J breaks free with the assistance of Harley Quinn, assumes command over the prison, and deliveries every one of the detainees.
Blessed unexpected development, Batman!
From that point, you're off on an undertaking that positions right underneath The Dark Knight film as far as wonderful Batman encounters. The genuine Arkham grounds is an insane asylum spread across various structures on one enormous stone.
With the Joker in control, you must swing over rooms loaded up with gas, save specialists, rip vent covers off the walls so you can make a way around locked entryways, and move as quickly as possible to prevent the Joker from delivering a multitude of beasts on individuals of Gotham City.
Tumblr media
Presently, that could seem like your run-of-the-mill Batman story - - and it sort of is - - however it's critical to bring up that this is a genuinely grown-up title. No doubt, a portion of the people from Batman: The Animated Series are back to repeat their jobs (Mark Hamill is the Joker, Kevin Conroy is Batman, and Arleen Sorkin is Harley Quinn), yet this isn't the animation. Harley's wearing a genuinely meager outfit that shows off her woman parts, Poison Ivy's in a few painted-on underwears, vivid language like "ass" and "bitch" is sprinkled in, and individuals are getting killed left and right. Arkham itself is a dim and grimy spot that just had each insane person housed there to go through the corridors destroying the structure.
Dead monitors are spread out on the floor, papers are flung about, and the offices have seen better days. These grown-up subjects connected to an extremely, Batman-looking world truly commute home your association with the story. I don't believe I'm truly going to fail to remember Mr. Zsasz holding a blade to a female specialist, her shouting for me to save her, the Joker shouting at Zsasz to kill her, and Zsasz shouting at me to remain back. Following quite a while of the Riddler being silly, I understood Arkham's form of the person was on an alternate level when he let a Riddle know that finished dismantling a child.
Furthermore, the fragments where you're under the Scarecrow's impact and Batman's most awful feelings of trepidation are acknowledged are probably the coolest, most cerebral pieces of the game. These are the minutes that enveloped me with the experience and caused me to feel like Batman on the longest evening of his life.
Ongoing interaction in this dull, dreadful world separates into three fundamental parts - - clench hand battling, going after from the shadows, and investigation. As you move from one space to another pursuing Harley or Commissioner Gordon's ruffian, you will run into miscreants. Bunches of times, you'll find a team standing around or the Joker will spring a snare with modest bunches of folks who are prepared to kill you. This is the point at which you'll utilize your straight hand-to-hand moves.
Clench hand battling in Arkham Asylum is essentially the meaning of simple to learn/difficult to dominate battle framework. The game permits Batman to move quicker than his foes (He's a prepared ninja, individuals!) and draw in them in 360 degrees. You simply point your left stick towards anything adversary you need to assault and Batman goes with the same pattern. Through four buttons - - strike, opposite, bounce, and shock - - you'll release Mr. Wayne's anger on the filth of the Earth. You can simply pound the strike button and bring down the miscreants with a solid arrangement of movements - - punts, elbows, punches, and more are sprinkled in - - and switch when you see the bug sense symbol spring up over a trouble maker's head, yet there's a sweet science to this frenzy.
This framework is perfect. I felt engaged as I wrecked these downers, got their bats, and pummeled them back into the aggressors. I'm certain it seems like the cycle could get monotonous, however, the hoodlums begin utilizing tasers and blades in the end, and that prompts you to battle them another way and try not to just pound the strike button; you want to get behind the taser-pressing folks to strike and stun the blade fellows before socking them in the jaw.
As you ping-pong off individuals with your savage assaults, a combo meter counts your strikes on the left half of the screen. However long every one of your assaults is landing (Don't pound the buttons; pick your shots.) and you're not getting hit (Reverse, Master Bruce!), the combo count continues to climb.
I'm certain it sounds straightforward, yet you wouldn't believe how great you must be to connect monstrous combos. If you can get the count up to eight (five with a redesign), you can do exceptional moves whenever you've opened them, and I can let you know that I don't do unique moves generally that often. Batman: Arkham Asylum is the best comic book videogame ever - - and the Game of the Year Edition simply adds to that.
This is a grown-up Dark Knight story that is very much told, packs some really fun interactivity components has first-rate voice ability and feels like it's essential for Batman standard.

To Press a Point
To draw a cityscape disappearing into the distance, an artist will start with a straight, vertical line; from the top and bottom each, two lines at equal angles away from each other. Drawing along those guides forces the eye to see things as they aren't - distant and tiny, despite being as flat as anything.
The corners of rooms are built with those exact same lines, and just like in an illustration, they force the viewer to look at things differently - simultaneously as they are, and aren't. Perception defines the world, holding it in place, and where perception falters, things can slip through unnoticed.
In the far corner of the taproom in the Honey-Tongued Fox, where the patrons look but don't watch, something - rather, someone - slips through unnoticed.
Tumblr media
The shifting shadows there seemed to part like a thin veil, and a dark man stepped trough. Raven-haired, black blazer casually unbuttoned over a bare button up, and matching black slacks that hugged his thin frame with the air of professional attention. With a lazy smile and an easy swagger to his walk, he looked for all the world like a man freshly off the clock.
The quaintly imperfect music of a local group set the room gently asway to the story of man called "the Free Storm." It was an upbeat and exciting span of songs about a roguish, local folk hero. It was still in its infant stage of trial and error, but it showed promise in its growing popularity. He didn't much care for it, though.
The man scanned the room with white-less eyes the color of a new moon's midnight - pupil-less and inscrutable. He marked each person in attendance, keeping a mental ledger of the number, the appearance, and the demeanor of the room at large. This took only a few seconds, and soon, he was back on the prowl.
He wove through the lightly packed room as unobtrusively as a wisp of smoke, never so much as brushing the sleeve cuff of another as he passed.
There was a woman seated at the far end of the bar who had spaced herself three down from her nearest neighbor. She was handsome - square shoulders, wheat-colored hair, and a thin patina of soot on her arms and clothes that  suggested a profession in manual labor. Her ale apparently held a good many stories to tell, as all her attention fell squarely on the half-finished drink. So much so that she didn't notice the darkly dressed man slip into the seat next to her until the woman behind the bar said: "Oh, hello, Mr. Derelict."
The woman beside Derelict nearly leapt out of her chair in surprise at his abrupt appearance. He affected a slight slouch in his posture, and propped an elbow on the counter so that he could rest his chin on his palm. From all seeming, he had been relaxing there for hours already.
Derelict donned a wry smile, white teeth sharp to a point threatening to show at the corner of his lips, but didn't yet acknowledge his skittish neighbor. "'ello, Arleen," he said, the cheer in his tone concealing a razor's edge, "'ow've you been?"
The barmaid returned the smile and drew out a pad of paper and a stub of a pencil, "About as well as one can hope! What'll you be having tonight?" She poised the pencil over the paper expectantly.
"Nothin' much, tonight, luv," he made a dismissive gesture toward the pencil and pad, "Just a dry martini for me - on the rocks, lemon, not lime - and then," he casually motions toward the woman beside him, "Whatever she's 'avin'." He finally tilted his head to turn his too-dark eyes on her, and gave her a small, encouraging smirk.
She stammered on the first few words a moment before collecting herself, and responded in a somewhat husky tone, "Another pint." She pitched the mug against her lips, downing it in a few swallows, then set it back on the counter and slid it toward Arleen, the barmaid. She scooped it up quickly and bustled off toward the bar proper.
Derelict's attention didn't leave the woman at his side as Arleen departed, and for several moments after. Just at the point one would get to "-ble" if speaking "uncomfortable" aloud, he breaks the silence, "So, Dawnin Farcast," he addressed her by name before asking for it, "From what I've been told, you've found yourself in quite the sticky situation, 'aven't you?" His attention roved up and down the woman - though his pupil-less eyes didn't let that show. He watched for any and all movement, especially for the unconscious sort - it was from those subtle twitches that he got his honest answers, not spoken word.
A shiver ran up Dawnin's spine as he spoke her name, as if someone had walked over her grave. She had heard plenty of rumors about this man - "the Shark; the Shadow" - but they didn't prepare her for actually being in his presence. Where others in the man's field of loan sharks, racketeers, and dons kept thickly muscled goons at hand to intimidate, Derelict illicited a sense of creeping anxiety by his presence alone. As if by simply showing up to meet him, one has already made a terrible deal with the devil under uncertain terms.
Dawnin's muscles tightened, and went slack again as she took a deep breath, "Yes. That's true," she answered stiffly, carefully calculating each word before she spoke it, "What have you heard of the situation so far?"
Derelict shook his head slowly, a helpless smile touching his lips, "Why don't you tell me your side, and we'll see 'ow much of it rings a bell to me." His obsidian eyes glinted dangerously in the low-light, "I like to judge me level of involvement on 'ow well stories match up."
Tumblr media
The tension in the air tightened around the pair, and her mouth opened and closed several times as she hunted for the right words. "W-we ranch aldagot out Center-wards," She rushed through her summary as if she were ripping off a bandage, "but last week, some rustlers set up camp in one of the far side of our property. There's an old cottage and a lighthouse out there that no one's touched in ages, and they've turned them into a sort of fort!" She finally took a breath, then started again, this time less rushed, "It's like warfare with them - they come out at night, rounding up just a beast or two, then vanish with them. By the time we notice, they're already off to market. Then day comes around and they're holed up behind stone walls." She averted her eyes, staring sidelong at the floor as her voice takes on a melancholy hue, "It's impossible... We'd run them out ourselves, but..."
"But...?" Derelict implored, "But? But?" He had caught the small expression of unease on her when she had looked away, and he latched onto it, prodding the weak spot. Derelict considered comfort to be the foundation of negotiations, so when he found a place to apply pressure, he did so with a sadistic sense of glee. He found it typically sped up the path to the heart of the situation.
Dawnin's  sandy cheeks turned a embarrassed shade of red, "But... we can't exactly just /kill/ them, or even report them for that matter..." She trailed off.
"Because of that somnus you 'ave growin' in that western field." Derelict stated nonchalantly, picking up the trail.
The color drained from the woman's face and her jaw slackened in disbelief, “How did you-” she started, then went quiet, burying her hands in her lap and looking away once again. Her anxiously hopeful expression had soured into a sunken shame. “It’s all we can do to...”
Derelict held up a hand to stop her, "Say no more, luv.” By that point, Derelict had shifted his position to rest his cheek on his fist and elbow on the counter, watching as Dawnin went about her story. He wore the amused smile of someone who knows too much - of a fox who knows the combination for the lock to the hen-house. "Terrible shame - it really is,” he remarked idly, “so what you’re saying is that you need these ‘omewreckers tended to, and you need it done quiet-like. ‘ave I got the jist of it?”
After a moment’s hesitation, she replied with a silent but sure nod.
“Well!” Derelict declared, “Looks like you came to the right unscrupulous gentleman.” His grin widened to its fullest, pulled back to show a wicked slash of too-sharp teeth. That was what he’d been looking for the whole time: a clear description of the terms. He had just needed to allow her to work up close enough to the brass tacks, herself.
He adjusted himself, then sat up straighter in his seat, “Takin’ care of blokes like this isn’t easy, I’ll tell you that. Mean bunch - rowdy bunch. If things were to get too physical, you’d be right to expect it to be a big show.” He holds up a finger to point at his point, “So me solution would be to isolate them, cut off all escape, and, like I said, deal with ‘em quiet-like.” He brings his hand back to scratch his chin contemplatively, “Still makes for a bit of a problem what with it all bein’ on your property. Probable cause is a bitch, and we don’t want them threatenin’ your livelihood. Trust me,” he added, shadows casting a shade darker across his features, “I know ‘ow that is.” He was quiet a moment longer, pretending to contemplate an answer for the woman, though he had already made up his mind on the matter before he had even sat down with her.
“Listen: ‘ere’s what we can do:” he started slowly, but worked speed into it as he went, as if getting caught up in a new idea, “Why don’t you put, say, three acres of that land up for sale - now ‘ear me out, I know that’s family land and you’d rather not part with it, but in the end, it’ll all work out for you. You put up those three - ones at the edge that ‘it the two abandoned places and then leadin’ up to the main road. I’ll ‘ave m'boys snatch it up, and then we’ll take care of them on me own property. Then no-one ‘as a reason to set foot on your property, and whatever ‘appens there is none of your concern.” He spread his arms amiably, “You wouldn’t catch so much as a peep. Besides, that strip along that cliff edge probably isn't great for grazin’ anyway, is it?"
Dawnin chewed her lower lip, her hands fidgeting in her lap, “Not particularly, no," She admitted sheepishly, "He... might make that deal. But that’st just... so much bigger than we had thought, we don’t exactly have the money to be able to pay for something quite so... Big.”
With a flick of his wrist, Derelict brushed the notion aside, “I’ve been runnin’ the numbers in me ‘ead, and I’ve seen the old shack itself." His tone was innocently contemplative, "It's a spot I might 'ave considered pickin’ up anyway if it were up on it's own. Good location, good view, nice and far away from the noise of the city." He was quiet a moment, putting on a show of mulling the decision over. "Nah, I'll offer a fair price - your payment'll be this opportunity for me." He shot her a conspiratorial glance that he noted right away didn't seem to alleviate any of her tension - exactly as he'd hoped, "Not all business is done in coin, luv." He concluded with an oily sort of confidence.
He made a barely perceptible gesture - a flick of his fingers across the bar - and in a span of moments, Arleen hurried back over to them with their drinks in hand. Had he taken his martini with lime, she would have brought it back promptly. But the substitution for lemon gave the cue to not come back till he called for it. Now he wanted that glass in Dawnin's hand. This close to the final decision, her tiniest expressions would speak volumes, and allowing those expressions to play across a glass in her hands would be like printing it in bold text.
Derelict picked up his glass by the stem and gave it an appreciative raise and tip to Arleen, who understood it as "good work, that'll be all" and "it'll be a good tip for you tonight." The barmaid smiled brightly and offered them both a small bow in return before hurrying off again to attend to the other patrons. Derelict always considered it good practice to be good to wait staff. They were some of the best eyes and ears, and good customers got remembered favorably.
He turned his attention back to Dawnin, who had picked up her mug of ale and now held it between both hands. Holding it close, he thought, defensive, considering what would happen if she gives me an answer I don't like. He knew that patch of family land was a serious point for her and her father. He knew this because he had already tried to buy that space through an intermediary, and the old man had adamantly refused to sell. But it was the perfect spot for his purposes, and he was a persistent man.
Derelict let the silence reign for a bit longer - not willing to be the first to talk once the cards were on the table - and soon, Dawnin rested an elbow on the bar and switched the mug into one hand, swishing the liquid inside thoughtfully, then taking a gulp. There it is. Making the commitment to one hand, taking a mouthful and not a shy sip. He allowed himself a small smile, waiting patiently for her to declare the decision he already knew she'd made.
"I think... That my dad should be alright with that. It's not much of the land, after all, and would could use the money to cover the cost of the last aldagoats." He said, hesitant at first, but becoming more confident the more she thought it through.
"Exactly!" Derelict agreed emphatically, "Maybe even a little left over to spruce the joint up, if I've been readin’ the ledgers and askin’ prices right." He pushed more positives in to solidify her decision, and he watched as it all cemented in her expression.
Dawnin nodded hard enough to drop some locks of her sandy golden brown hair over her face, "Right, then. I'll let dad know."
"And I'll 'andle that messy paperwork for you both," Derelict said with a smile, his colorless eyes flashing hungrily, "Don't you worry about that. It'll just take a few scribbles in your end, and you can consider that band of baddies 'andled. Permanently." He added with a dangerous grin.
He would, of course. After acquiring the property, he'd let the thefts happen maybe once or twice over the next week, just to allow a proper tapering off, and them he would call his men back out. They didn't ask for much pay to take up that job for him - they had seemed strangely happy just to be doing it. It was why he was so confident it would all go over well - count on the people who love what they do, but know better than to do it for free. He'd expected to need to push this family more to get them to finally let up - he had dealt with sentimental types before, and usually they waited out till the circumstances were desperate before following his breadcrumb trail back to him for help. So, he was pleased with the results he had gotten after only a week. With the rustlers-for-hire's contract terminated, the "menace" cleared out, and the cottage open and empty, he'd be able to do what he pleased with it.
Enambris did want a seaside wedding, after all.
Derelict raised his glass in Dawnin's direction and gave her a knife-edge smile, like a cat with a mouse, "To good business."
Dawnin raised her mug to match, and though her voice wavered a touch, she agreed, "To good business."

She is a Canadian transplant to Philly who moved here 13 years ago for grad school and never wants to leave. When she is not working on her Ph.D in Human Sexuality or working out new numbers for the stage, she can be found covered in dirt on her organic mini urban farm or standing over a hot canning pot in the kitchen preserving the harvest. She is the producer of LiCK’s monthly Vixens & Vagabonds Queer & Kinky Cabaret, the longest running drag (and burlesque) show at her home bar Tabu, every 1st Saturday and recently won the title of Ms. Philadelphia Leather 2015.
Van Nguyen
Van is a genderqueer Vietnamese-American educator, activist, and performing artist raised and rooted in Philadelphia. She is a board member of the Leeway Foundation, a performer and web coordinator of the Liberty City Kings Drag and Burlesque troupe, steering committee member of Hotpot!, Philadelphia’s queer Asian/Pacific Islander women and trans folk gathering, and a former Philadelphia Trans Health Conference Kids Camp program director.
Arleen Olshan
The Mt. Airy Art Garage was Arleen’s brain child. Initially her goal was create a space where artists could collaborate—have studios, a gallery, classroom and performance space to build community. With the tremendous partnership of her wife Linda Slodki and the support of the Northwest Community, this dream, launched in 2009, has come to fruition.
Arleen is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, with a BFA in Painting from the University of Arts (then the Philadelphia College of Art). She is also a master in handcrafted leather accessories, which she has worked in for over 50 years.
Kathryn Pannepacker
Kathryn Pannepacker is a textile/visual artist living in Philadelphia, PA. She graduated from Penn State University with a major in English and a minor in art. Afterwards, she apprenticed with 3rd generation French tapestry weaver, Jean Pierre Larochette and his partner, Yael Lurie, a painter and designer for tapestry. Kathryn then went to Aubusson, France to continue weaving as an artist-in-resident. She also had the opportunity to be an artist-in-resident in Hachioji, Japan, through the Japan Foundation.
Though still weaving pictorial tapestry, she also weaves with unusual materials. Through the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia, Kathryn painted a 7′ x 500 ft. wide mural called Wall of Rugs: the global language of textiles at Girard and Belmont Avenues featuring the textiles of 42 countries. Part 2 was completed at Broad and Lehigh Streets. Her most recent painted-to-look-like-knitting & crochet-mural, Nana Blankets, can be seen in North Philly.
Kathryn exhibits locally, nationally and internationally, and has work in private and public collections. In the summers of 2010 & 2013, she was in Canada doing an outdoor textile installation for the international textile arts event at Moon Rain Center. She is committed to the transformative power of art in people’s lives and the sustainability of such transformation by involving the community.
See her featured on the cover/Spring 2009 issue of AMERICAN CRAFT.
E. Simon Ruchti, Ph.D.
Simon is an assistant professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and Philosophy at West Chester University. After completing a Bachelors in Theatre and Dramatic Literature at Mount Holyoke College, Simon went on to earn her Masters in Performance Studies at New York University and her doctorate in Interdisciplinary Arts at Ohio University. Both her master’s thesis and dissertation examined the relationship between gender and performance. Simon has also worked as a director and dramaturge for theatrical productions, spent five years in the film industry, and even had the opportunity to direct a baroque opera. Her areas of expertise include queer theory, feminist theory, performance theory, and masculinity studies. Currently, however, Simon’s scholarship focuses on her work with fraternity men to fight rape culture.
Jennifer Turnbull
Jennifer Turnbull uses art, the most powerful tool of communication, to transcend man-made boundaries. Inspired by the everyday, Jennifer Turnbull illuminates stories with the strongest themes and sometimes most difficult experiences relevant to all audiences. Over 30 years ago Jennifer began formal training in Ballet and expanded to Jazz, Contemporary, Hip-Hop & West African dance.  Almost 20 years ago, choreography became an integral part of her expression, earning her awards for Excellence in Choreography from Deerfield Academy and Tufts University.
Turnbull seeks to redefine the terms of art-education, believing in the power it harnesses, to revolutionize our formal education systems. Jennifer teaches Dance and Visual Arts in Philadelphia with Spiral Q Puppet Theater and the Barnes Foundation. Collaboratively she works with visionaries making music, dance and site-specific performance with SWARM and BARETEETH.
Chea Villanueva
Chea Villanueva’s fiction and poetry has been published in numerous anthologies throughout the U.S., Asia, and Europe and is the author of two books of short fiction—Bulletproof Butches and Jessie’s Song. Villanueva identifies as a male or male identified Stone Butch and was featured in the late Christopher Lee’s film, Trappings of Transhood, a documentary about gender identity.

Hey, talk somewhat on Superman's B-list villains? Livewire, Atomic Skull, Silver Banshee, Terra Man, Prankster, and any other low-level but recurring ones. Any ones have potential or cool powers there?
With minor Superman villains, I’ve already touched on Silver Banshee, Prankster, Riot, the Galactic Golem, and J. Wilbur Wolfingham. Delving into some others who maybe don’t have that much name recognition, both B-listers of some degree of note and not-quites who I have some fondness for:
Tumblr media
Livewire has always felt like she should be a bigger deal among the Superman villains, but at the same time I get to a certain extent why she hasn’t been. She’s got a great design, and Lori Petty’s voice did as much to define her as Arleen Sorkin did for Harley Quinn, but the more I think about her, the more she runs into problems. She’s not especially meant to be taken seriously - her ‘criticisms’ of Superman are deliberately framed as petty and shallow, to an extent that changing them would essentially rewrite her already pretty well-defined personality. So what you’ve got is a villain who won’t really hurt Superman (given one of his most iconic covers is taking a lightning bolt to the chest with a reply of “It tickles!”, electricity isn’t much of a plausible threat to him) who can still avoid him while causing a ruckus throughout Metropolis, mocking him all the while…and, well, that’s Mxyzptlk. Plus, while Mxy while might bring a vague air of sleaze with him in a way that can leave Superman a touch out of his depth, he’s still deliberately ridiculous, while Leslie Willis is typically much more straightforward and pointed in how she tries to take him down a peg or two in a way that can too easily slide into showing him as stodgy and boring by comparison.
The solution then I think is to bend her away from being a character who has direct confrontations with him all that often. One of her big shticks is that she can manipulate media broadcasts, usually just to make fun of Superman before they throw down. But what if that got pushed further? Make her instead a ghost in the machine riling up idiots on message boards who find the idea of tearing down Superman simply for the sake of it a riot; she could be a one-woman Anonymous, the Bad Media to the Daily Planet’s Good Media, drawing a line under how much of Metropolis hasn’t been hearing Superman’s message at all, needing both to be stopped, and to themselves be saved from far more than a meteor or robot (which would also do a lot to counter the image of Metropolis as a generically perfect city). Ironic, detached cynicism vs. unapologetic sincerity. In short, 4chan vs. Superman, winner take all.
Tumblr media
Atomic Skull is, what, an actor with amnesia who thinks he’s a movie villain or something? Meh. I guess there’s something to play with in the idea of his powers as inherently dangerous, evoking Superman’s own fears of losing control, but that seems kinda shallow. I know Superwoman has shown him as somewhat reforming, which seems like a good hook (some of his villains really should), but that’s a whole other angle that hasn’t really been developed yet. The one time I have really liked him was in a set of stories immediately after Electric Superman where each of the four Superman titles briefly told stories set in different eras, with a version of the Skull in the first Golden Age story. A movie star who parlayed his fame as an American Nazi propagandist, he tried to attach himself to Superman’s own increasing public recognition - given he too wore a caped uniform in the serial Curse of the Atomic Skull - claiming they were both examples of the emergence of ubermenschen to reclaim the world. Mesh that with his traditional powerset and contemporary context, and I have an idea of him as some kind of hyper-reactionary, ‘realpolitk’-espousing nihilistic superman of skinheads, alt-righters, and crazed survivalists, who see him as the firey atomic nu-human of an apocalyptic tomorrow. He could even hook up with the Supremacists from Greg Pak and Aaron Kuder’s time on Action Comics for some easy recruits and henchmen.
Tumblr media
Subjekt-17; now here’s a guy who I wish had popped up again. Largely forgotten as a consequence of Kurt Busiek’s time on Superman being criminally overlooked, Subjekt-17 was a worst-case scenario: not able to pass for human in the same way as Kal-El, he was taken in by the Soviets as an infant and experimented on his entire life, only to be confronted by Superman when freed and trying to cut a swathe of blood through humanity as payment for his suffering. There was an interesting, painful dynamic in play there - he saw Superman as something like a brother, but in spite of his telepathy couldn’t understand why he would protect the humans who coldly tormented Subjekt his entire life, ultimately seeing Superman as so desperate to assimilate that he would fight an innocent to protect the guilty. I feel like there’s a lot more stories in him, and when it comes to the perennial question of “Are you sure you’re really doing the right thing, Superman?”, I feel like he as a victim of the establishment would have a much more consistent batting average for good stories than yet another edgy new antihero lecturing Superman about the Real Issues.
Tumblr media
Magog doesn’t even feel like he should break C-list in the natural order of things, but he was in probably the most widely-read Superman-centric comic ever other than I suppose Death of Superman, so yeah, he counts as notable. The idea presented later on in The Kingdom with Gog as a worshiper of Superman whose shattered faith drove him to madness feels like it has almost a kernel of something interesting at the heart of it, but it feels much more so like a vehicle for semi-talented creators to write dumb comics with him that think of themselves as much more important than they are. A friend did have a decent take on what to do with him narratively though in a way that works with how he’s existed up until now: he’s not a threat himself, he’s not even a consistent or on his own necessarily important figure, but he’s a multiversal constant in that his arrival is always the prelude to a cosmic upheaval or an end of an age of heroes, and specifically catastrophe for Superman. His appearances even back it up: his time in Chuck Austen’s Action Comics was shortly before Infinite Crisis, he came on the scene in the New 52 shortly before Truth and the resulting death of that version of Superman, and now another seemingly new version of him is in Supergirl in the build-up to Doomsday Clock. There’s a lot you can play with there: he doesn’t even have to be the same character twice, but he always emerges to try and take Superman to task on some profound level as a harbinger to a greater doom for the DCU. Maybe over time he could have the same kind of narrative “him showing up means something” cache as Doomsday, but in the sense that seeing him means Superman’s going to have to ask some big questions about himself and what he does as preparation for a larger reckoning for him and his kind, rather than meaning Superman’s gonna have to punch a bone monster again.
Tumblr media
I wanna love Terra-Man. He’s a cowboy who was abducted by aliens and got a winged horse to fly around the universe, who calls himself Terra-Man because he a spaceman from Earth! That’s great! But I can’t say the execution has ever much interested me; he’s so over-the-top without ever especially being played as a gag that I just can’t get into it. Luckily though, the solution has already been reached with him: Tom Strong’s Coleman Grey, the Weird Rider, is straight-up Terra-Man, played with the melancholy, cold competency and swagger of a killer out of time, and some fantastic stone-cold badass moments that sell the hell out of him. Just apply that personality to this guy - fearsome but not unreasonable in the right circumstances, out of time but comfortable with his new life even if it means sometimes running up against the Man of Tomorrow - and we have an instant winner; maybe not one of the greats, but not every Superman opponent needs to bring major thematic concerns to the table so long as they can pull their weight in entertaining storytelling opportunities.
And now for a few rapid-fire takes:
Kryptonite Man was one of those characters who just had to exist sooner or later, but there’s really nothing about him that Metallo doesn’t make redundant.
To my knowledge Blackrock has never particularly worked, but I like the idea of him as a reality show hero who gets in Superman’s way sometimes. It doesn’t even need to be that specifically if those trappings are passe at this point; so long as he’s another vigilante opposed to Superman, you can probably pull something out of Blackrock.
Mindlessones convinced me that Nick O’Teen has a place in the background of Superman’s world.
Paragon is a comically awful human being with the powers to back up his inane egotism and cruelty in a way that actually quite worked for me under Kurt Busiek; I think he hits on the same “oh god dammit, this guy” response from Superman that Mxyzptlk elicits, but of a different enough flavor to make him worth keeping around as a separate figure.
And finally, while Tempus would probably lose a lot of his charm if up against a more straight-laced version of Superman, in the context of how silly Lois and Clark got he was my favorite part of that show, and I think he’d work fantastically in any other tongue-in-cheek Silver Age revival treatment of Superman’s world as a way to poke fun at the foundations, hilariously enough so it doesn’t grate but so over-the-top villainously we know we’re not supposed to agree with him.

My mom got us monogrammed towels. She said it is for all 3 of our names. Not using their real names here, lets just say its Arleen, Saul, and me Stone. She then said that the S is for both me and my brother. I think i know why she didn't get 3 letters.

11 Febrero
It’s been a minute–a lot has happened since las iglesias! I’m alive and well. Knock on wood but so far no explosive diarrhea, no homesickness, no lost passport, no funky encounters... todo bien!
A quick update and then I’m going to just throw a bunch of random experiences, thoughts, and pictures I’ve accumulated over the past 4 or so days cause I have no way of keeping track of it all–so many things happen every day...
UPDATE: Estoy solo en Nicaragua y estoy manejando.
Both Noel and Lorena have gone stateside temporarily. Everybody is okay - no se preocupen. This leaves me alone, but not entirely. A friend of Lorena’s, Noelia, is going to help take care of Toto and may, in fact, even stay in the house part-time or full-time. So we’re all good! Noel left a few days ago and I took Lorena to the airport today. If I remember, I’ll tell you about my first driving adventure later! Anyhow, things were a bit crazy as these plans were all being made–hence the lack of posting. So here we go...
LAS HORMIGAS
Tumblr media
These ants live at the Choco Museum and I like them. What I don’t like are the zancudos (mosquitos). They seem to be getting worse with the drier/hotter weather. I’m not sure why but they’re lovin’ my ankles and shoulders.
IT’S THE 1ST OF THE MONTH
On the first Monday of the month, there was an incredible line outside of the bank–the longest line I’ve seen in Nicaragua by far. It turns out that it’s all the retired people collecting their pension.
EL PEREZOSO TUVO EXITO
En fin, yo aprendí que significa la phrase–Tener exito–to succeed. That’s my ‘word’ of the week along with Perezoso–both the adjective lazy and the word for a sloth.
Tumblr media
I stumbled upon this beautiful block. On the left is La Fortaleza, an old fort that may have future plans but, for the time being, is closed to the public although apparently some private/government soirees are thrown there too. I was mostly, however, drawn to those 4 casitas. Que linda, verdad?!
MASA
I had my first Nacatamal of the trip. This is a Nicaraguan tamale, but truly a league beyond a tamale. They’re typically made and consumed on weekends only. There’s a panadería nearby called Doña Haydee (?), y hace nacatamals de pollo y de cerdo. They are only available Fri-Sun until they run out.
Tumblr media
Arleen told me that they use fake masa here in Granada for their tortillas. No usan maza reál en Granada. Solo puede comprar en Masaya. En general, por allá la gente son más trabajadores, más creativo, y más educado. I think somebody might have a grudge against Granada folks... But I have now heard from multiple people that Masaya is indeed a culinary mecca for Nicaragua. We’d gone once but only to see the market, which is well known for its plethora of quality goods. Pues, vamos a comer en Masaya!
LA EDUCACION
Arleen and I continue to discuss various issues. As we sat in the Cathedral and interpreted the new paintings on the ceiling (Noah’s Ark, Abraham and Isaac(?), Exodus, etc.), we shifted back to education. As she was talking about public and private schools, it sounded like she was arguing that there was little to no value in public school education–textbooks that are 20+ years old, lack of textbooks and other materials, etc. So I asked her if she’d rather not send her boy to school than to a public school. She laughed but agreed that for her, it was no choice. She and her husband (an engineer) do, and would, sacrifice what they would need to, in order to send him through private school. And even a private school is limited. She described the amount of work that parents (moms) have to do to supplement the school education. Ultimately, we agreed that she had a nearly full-time job of being a teacher to her son. She studies with him, draws up her own exercises for him and even her own exams.
4:30pm is a really cool time to be out and about. All of the students are getting out of school and, with their uniforms, seemingly take over the streets. I wish I had a picture to share.
WILLIAM WALKER
We also talked about William Walker. This is the umpteenth time I’ve heard William Walker but was never quite sure why. His name came up one night the guys were arguing about the political crisis. Now I have a vague understanding of why. Essentially, with his own army he marched down Central America, pillaging, pirating, and claiming ownership over land. He would take natural resources (e.g. stones, minerals) and sell them in Europe. This was in or around the 1850′s. And thus began the American involvement in Nicaragua.
XALTEVA
The name of one of the local tribes was Xalteva. As we watched a couple groups of musicians and dancers performing traditional songs and dances (who are contracted by the Tourism office to perform when buses of tourists are scheduled to arrive via Costa Rica or Panama for the day), I asked if this was rooted in Xalteva culture. No. She said the folkart comes from colonial times and is a result of the mix of Inios, Españoles, y Afro-Carribeans. I am excited to read El Gueguense because I think I’ll have a better understanding of all this after. But in a nut shell, much of the traditional arts are rooted in the dissent of Colonialism–’secret’ songs and dances of empowerment that snuck through the eyes and ears of the Spanish imperialists. I think that’s incredible!
COST COMPARISON
Tumblr media
As I prepare to be alone, I stopped by the Maxx Pali (a grocery outlet, more or less) and picked up some bare essentials. The Protex is a bar of oatmeal soap. The cereal was the healthiest I could find. And the silver plastic bag is known as chile. It’s spicy pickled chopped onions - by far the best condiment in the world! $15 total. Somehow they only charged me 1 córdoba (1/32.6 of a dollar) for the floss, I’m guessing that means it’s not a very popular product...
DRIVING IN MANAGUA
That was the name of the first book I read about Nicaragua ahead of my first trip in 2015. It’s amazing and I highly recommend it, although the caveat is that it’s about a white guy living/traveling in Nicaragua written by the white guy himself. But his observations are quite acute and I easily relate to some of them.
So my sense of direction proved helpful. I was able to navigate around town, to Managua, to the airport, back to Tia Karla’s house, back to Granada. BUT I NEARLY GOT CRUSHED BY A BUS! So Nicaragua prefers roundabouts to traffic signals. I have no problem with that. But there aren’t really any lanes so it’s a bit of a free-for-all. And it’s legal for one on the inside line to leave the roundabout, thus cutting off anyone on the outside. I was nervous about these and during our drive to Managua today, asked Lorena a million hypothetical questions. We went through a few to practice, and all was good. But I still imaged these hypothetical situations and didn’t understand how to avoid them.
So after giving myself a pat on the back for navigating from the airport, to Karla’s, and back to Calleterra Masaya (the hwy) - I was going through the roundabout to enter the highway. I was in the circle, thus establishing the right of way from cars not yet in the circle. I passed the first turn. I passed the second turn. And as I was nearing the third, a bus was approaching the circle at a high speed. Now, so far, I’ve learned to the key to a safe ride is to drive defensively in an aggressive manner. So I dared not stop in the middle of the circle. I held my breath and continued past the 3rd street as the bus entered the circle. It was now my turn to bear right out of the circle and I needed to cut off the bus (but it’s not cutting off, I have the right of way). So I kept on holding my breath and zoomed by with the bus zooming lord knows many millimeters behind me. Had he hit me, I think he would have pushed me into the guardrail and I probably would have gone over the guardrail and down a couple stories onto the highway below...
Driving feels like a video game. A lot of veering one way and the next. Dodging people, bicycles, motorcycles, horses, buses, taxis, etc. It’s like Frogger but reversed. There are a million frogs crossing and you’re the car trying to make it from pt. a to pt. b without hitting or getting hit by one. It’s fun and exhilarating but it’s also real life.
END ON A GOOD NOTE
Tumblr media
This is part of Noelia’s patio. I absolutely love it! Nadessa arrives tomorrow for a week so I gotta get some rest.
Estoy apreciado de tú y tú y todos. Buenas Noches!

Blackmore – What Alternatives Are There For Your Wedding Event Band
There are various ways to do this but the two most apparent choices for wedding event and celebration organisers is an either a DJ or a live wedding Blackmore band. Live music can really help to give your event atmosphere and excitement. Arleen Ben visits souldesire.co.uk Essex
Smaller sized Blackmore Blackmore bands, included their own advantages. Naturally they take up less space, which enables more flexibility when it pertains to picking an area in a place for them to play.
. The very first idea to make you celebration various is to hire a homage celebration Blackmore band. This involves organizing for an entire performance playing songs and performing like some chosen legendary musician. In such celebrations work with celebration Blackmore bands that are professional in playing the tunes of that world class vocalist or Blackmore band.
State expect one might arrange a tribute celebration for Rolling Stone, Grateful Dead or Blondie.
Many wedding event music Blackmore bands work through a trusted representative which can be an indicator of the professional level of the Blackmore band. It is constantly a good idea to search for reviews of the Blackmore band online or through pals. June Poetry Slam Is Coming & April Lynn James Wants To Talk About It!
Poetry Slam Saturday, June 7, 2014 @ 7 pm
I came to Philadelphia in search of Communi-Tea. My immediate family had become toxic, and after taking a friend up on an offer of sanctuary and sharing her studio apartment in NYC’s East Village for the first half of 2013, I needed to find a home somewhere. I had to begin again. After traveling the northeast (Boston, Maine) and across the pond (France, the Netherlands, Germany), I moved to Chestnut Hill. Here in northwest Philadelphia, amid trees and stone, I hoped to heal my heart and find other artists.
Cohosts: April Lynn James (R) and Mary Ann Domanska (L)
I had heard that Philly was a town supportive of the arts and artists.  At a street fair in Mt. Airy in September 2013, I learned of the Mt. Airy Art Garage, and met Arleen, one of its founders. I became a dues-paying member the following month, and met Linda, MAAG’s President. I loved Linda and Arleen’s vision of creating a space for all the arts—visual, literary and performative. I attended events sporadically over the fall and winter, and got involved in planning the second annual International Women’s Day event. In March 2014, I had the opportunity to co-host that event and to perform some of my (and my alter ego’s) poetry. It was during the IWD event that I met Mary Ann, who was leading MAAG’s Writer’s Group. I was exhorted to attend the Slam, so I did. The vibe was so friendly that inaugural night: people brought their picnic baskets, filled with wine, cheese and other edibles and sat themselves around the candlelit tables. One entrant brought her entire family who cheered her on. The audience and participants were a mixture of young and old, black and white, gay and straight, and all things in-between. We had 60 plus people at that first Slam, exceeding our expectations, and challenging our supply of chairs.
The biggest surprise for me that night was that I won the slam! I had come simply to support a fledgling event and to share my work, yet here I was walking away with the top prize!  How about that? A Sonneteer wins in Mt. Airy! This would never have happened in gritty, cut-throaty New York City! Now, I co-host the Poetry Slam. Our audience for the second slam was also a vibrant and vocal mix of folk from Germantown, Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill and other parts of the city. Yes, some folks even came up from Center City! What, you say? People traveling into the Northwest for poetry? Yes, Virginia—yet again, something that would never happen in NYC.
I want to see this Poetry Slam become THE place to be the first Saturday evening of every month.
This month our featured poet will be Kasey Jueds, author of The Keeper. Her poems have appeared in publications including Beloit Poetry Journal, Prairie Schooner, Manhattan Review, Salamander, Crab Orchard Review, Women’s Review of Books, and 5AM. She’s been awarded residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Soapstone, and the Ucross Foundation. Keeper, my first book, won the Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize from the University of Pittsburgh Press. So, we expect an exciting evening!
The slam starts at 7 pm and goes until 9pm. You can sign up at the door, or send an email to [email protected]. Download the list of Slam Rules HERE. The poets are limited to five, count ‘em 5 entrants. At only $5, the MAAG Poetry Slam’s a deal that can’t be beat. And for those competition-shy amongst us, there is an Open Mic directly following the Slam at 9 pm. Come one, come all and spread the word!
