Idk if ASAW will still be going on when this is posted, but I was scrolling through the aromantic tag and I'm so confused by how many people are calling it Aromantic Awareness Week / AAW????
Like granted it's a minority that and I /know/ learning new terms can be really hard for some people, but I remember when I first learned about ASAW back in… I think 2018 or 2019 it was very much talked about and explained to those who asked; That Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week was much preferred and was trying to become the new default because arospec who weren't the aro version of "black stripe aces" feeling left out and dismissed during our week. So well I assume it's probably mainly just people who didn't know that, I can't help but feel like it aromantics specifically trying to exclude arospec folks as I saw that happening way to much in the past to trust it suddenly died out and everyone who used Aromantic Awareness Week in their posts aren't exclusionists. This kinda turned into a half vent half history lesson lol, but I was not expecting to see AAW used especially more then I personally saw even last year.

I don’t see why I don’t love you as you want me to... I don’t know why.

For day 5 of arospec awareness week it’s my personal favourite aro headcanon, which if you couldn’t tell from my icon is in fact Jo March! Where do I even start with this charater, man... I love her in all her incarnations but especially as played by Saoirse Ronan in the 2019 adaptation, a film which I am forever grateful for the existence of. It was the first film I ever saw that felt like it was speaking to my experiences and the way I perceive the world, instead of me having to project my experiences onto a story that wasn’t made for them, and I only wish it hadn’t taken 19 years for that to happen. It means the world to me, I’ve watched it a probably unhealthy number of times considering it only came out a little over two years ago, I’ll probably watch it plenty more times in the future (in fact I have at least one more planned for this weekend!) and no matter how many times I’ve seen it the ending still makes my lil aro heart sing!

Happy Arospec Awareness Week! For the visibility prompt I made an aro coloured Jugehad using one of the panels from Jugehead vol. 2. I’ve loved Archie Comics since I was a kid and Jughead means a lot to me as representation. (image description below the cut)
[Image Description: a picture of Jughead Jones, originally drawn by Derek Charm, that’s been recoloured. Jughead’s a thin, white teenager with black hair that falls in front of his face. He’s in front of a dark green background and wearing a light green vest with white buttons over a black shirt with a grey S on it, and a light green crown hat. He’s holding up his right hand in a wave and holding his cell phone in his left.]

What will relationships be?
Coming to the end of Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week; we as a community have expressed and shared many different goals for the future of aromantic awareness and representation in the wider world. I’m so glad to be involved with a group of people who are dedicated to educating and involving other people in our experiences; rather than segregating ourselves from the rest of society.
Amatonormativity is a dangerous cultural phenomenon that negatively affects everyone, not just aromantics. But we aros must and will be the first wave in breaking down this hurtful, widespread belief.
For my part, as a quoiromantic, I have my own goal for aromantic awareness that I’d like to see fulfilled. I hope that, in the future, aros and allos alike are able to successfully redefine what it means to be in ‘a relationship’.
Or rather, ‘un-define’ it.
I dream of a world where 2 or more people can say “We’re together” and everyone can accept them without needing to place expectations and assumptions on their relationship.
A world where when someone says ‘I love you’ , it means what THEY want it to mean; not what society tells us it should mean.
A world where a person can choose to live life happily on their own and not be shamed or pitied for their happiness.
I believe in a world where relationships will be WHATEVER WE WANT them to be.
My only other hope is that when ASAW ends, it won’t actually end; that aromantic awareness will be celebrated every week, every day.
WITHOUT SHAME OR WARNING

ASAW Prompts
Aromantic-Official will be hosting prompts and reblogging a few responses for Arospec Awareness Week! Each prompt can be answered with a original creation, like writing or art, or you talking about your personal experiences. You can answer as little or as many of the prompt questions as you’d like. The first three prompts have two days to complete each one, for those with limited time or making very involved responses. Post in the tag #ASAW 2019!
Prompt 1 | February 17-18 | Discovery
How did you learn you were aromantic or arospec? How long did it take to find the label and to accept it? Did it click immediately, or was it a journey of denial and/or mislabeling? How has learning you were aromantic or arospec changed you? Your perception of yourself? How you act around others? Your personal relationships?
Prompt 2 | February 19-20 | Visibility
How has representation (coded or explicit) in media helped you? How has a lack of it harmed you? What would your ideal aro/arospec representation be? What do you think the aro community could do to make ourselves visible to others? What would you like more people to know about aros? If aromanticism and its spectrum were widely known, would you be more open about your arospec identity?
Prompt 3 | February 21-22 | Community
Do you feel the aro community has supported you? Has it helped or hindered you along your journey? Do you interact with other aros often, or seek out spaces with them? What do you like or dislike about the community? Do you like or dislike the greater queer community, and has it helped or hindered you overall? Do you like how small and connected the aro community is, or is that stifling? Do you create your own community spaces?
Prompt 4 | February 23 | Free day!
Stuff you didn't include in previous prompts and want to talk about, aro-related content, personal stories, experimental creations, anything goes!
Again, we’ll be reblogging a few responses, and if you want us to see yours, tag it with #ASAW 2019!
