excerpts from the Veriloquace Glossary o'Mathematics, a reference quire compiled by Rotcham University Primers.
zeffer /ˈzɛ.fə/ [zero] the number of things in an empty collection, the quantity one fewer than one. Before 1350 < Scholastic Latin zefer, zefrum (alt. zephirus by false connection to Zephyr) < Arabic صِفْر • ṣifr "empty, void" < in sense from Sanscrit शून्य • śūnyá "empty, void".
ablate /ˈa.blət/ [negative] fewer than zeffer, as of a debtor's money or a distance backward. 1481 < Lombard ablad < Scholastic Latin ablātus "taken away, withdrawn, removed", first used in financial accounts and taken up by mathematicians some decades later.
dart /ˈdaːt/ [~vector] a segment of a line, considered with a choice of which end is the head and which the vane. Around 1470 < Early Merch dart "throwing spear, dart" < Middle French dart, dard < Medieval Latin dardus < Frankish *darōth < Classical German *darōthus "light spear, javelin, dart". Extended to its mathematical sense by the pictorial analogy of drawing arrowheads on line segments.
augrim /ˈəu.gɾɪm/ [~arithmetic] the mathematics of calculation with numbers; computation more generally. Around 1220 < Drengot augrime, algrisme etc < Old French algorisme < Scholastic Latin algorismus "the use of Arabic numbers" < Arabic الخَوَارِزْمِيّ • al-ḵawārizmiyy, a name of the Persian polymath whose mathematical works introduced much of mathematics to Europe.
arrhumb /ˈa.ɾəm/ [cosine] the sending of an angle to the quotient of the height of a rod deflected by that angle from the vertical to the full length of the rod. Early Merch arrum, arrom (the modern spelling is influenced by unrelated rhumb "compass bearing") < Arabic الرمح • ar-rumḥ "spear, shaft". This appears to be a metaphorical extension related to the use ofوتر • watar < Sanscrit ज्या • jyā́ "bowstring" for vater [sine].
reading an anthology of short fiction from Latin America, which starts in the colonial period and actually begins with this excerpt from a lost manuscript written by Fray Ramón Pané, which he wrote after spending time with the Taíno people, on his understanding of their beliefs and religion. this is the end of the story they included, ‘How the Men were Separated from the Women’. And first, this is the history given for it prior to this translation into English:
“The report, Relación acerca de las antiguedades de las Indias, was lost, but not before it had been copied verbatim in Diego Columbus's biography of his father. The manuscript of this book, however, was also lost; fortunately, it had earlier been translated into Italian. Professor José J. Arrom’s recent superb edition of Pané’s Relación is his translation of the text back to its “original’’ Spanish. But even that original text is somewhat imprecise. Being a Catalan, Pané’s Spanish was not perfect. Hence, Arrom’s version is an improvement on the original as well as a careful rendition of the entangled names of Taino gods. Pané was an attentive listener and was for the most part devoid of the prejudices of other Europeans, so his account has an air of authenticity, even with the textual uncertainties. His Relación is a quilt of brief narratives whose theogonic order he cannot quite make out. The following story, ‘“How the Men Were Parted from the Women,”’ is among the most original, although there are echoes of classical myths; one cannot tell whether they are the product of Pané’s mind, or proof of the commonality of all mythical narratives, which certain branches of anthropology have proposed.”

Romantic Abstention: abstaining oneself from romantic love, for any reason. Not necessarily romancelessness, as one can still show romantic traits.
Not the same as romantic celibacy as it's casually used for alloromantic people inherently, or even aromantic people inherently, depending who is the speaker you're reading.
