I've always loved those cube texture studies, and since most of my studies are anatomy sketches I wanted my next ones to be colour-based, so I gave myself a week or so between commissions to start this :D they're so fun, expect more in the future!

(time taken was as little as 20-40 minutes for the first four all the way up to an hour and a halfish for the last three)

what brushes do you use for backgrounds?

I use a lot of different ones, depending on what type of background it is. But here are some of my favorites:

Hartz for trees and plants, then Dove Lake to give them some texture.

For grass, I like to use Soft Brush first and then add texture with Wildgrass on a lower opacity.

And for walls, like inside a room, I like to add texture with Currawong.
