“The Irish government is offering a €325 weekly basic income trial for artists which will last for three years. As part of the trial 2,000 artists will be randomly selected from all of the applicants. The government definition of artists is broad and covers any creative or interpretative expression, including: visual arts, theatre, literature, music, dance, opera, film, circus and architecture.
The trial hopes to minimise the loss of skill and experience from the arts sector whilst also recognising the value that artists contributes to society. In addition, the trial is aiming to prove that a basic income enables artists to focus on projects without their projects being impacted from the stress of needing to look for work in other sectors to sustain them. Artists who receive the payment are also free to obtain additional work if they please without affecting the payment, however the payment is taxed so additional work may change their tax rate...
The policy was announced by Ireland’s Minster for the Arts Catherine Martin who is a member of Ireland’s Green Party. The Green party are one of three parties in a coalition government in Ireland. When launching the policy Martin said,
“I believe that this scheme is the start of a fundamental change in the way Ireland supports and recognises her artists and arts community.”
Martin went on to say,
“This pilot scheme represents a groundbreaking opportunity for us to explore how the role of the artist in Irish society can be protected and nurtured so we can continue to be inspired by great art for generations to come.”” -via The Good News Hub, 4/30/22

I hope there's a tinge of disgrace about me. Hopefully, there's one good scandal left in me yet.

Artist or Designer?
I have always struggled with calling myself an artist.
When I was younger, I was that kid that always had a sketchbook on them. I was voted 'Most Likely to be an Artist" in my high school class. I was always making something. Always creating.
But I never felt that the term 'artist' described who I was by what I was doing.
Artists, in my mind, are people who are motivated to create from their hearts. They are driven by their passions to express themselves in such a way that the world around them can experience their inner world. Their art pours forth from their hearts for the simple purpose of being heard, seen, experienced so that the world might be changed in knowing them.
But I was never thing that motivated me to create.
For me, creation is a form of problem solving; of story telling. A way to take things with no purpose and breathe life into them. Give them form AND function. Knowing where my journey ends is is often the beginning of my work, only then can I blaze the best trail to get there.
Ironically, it wasn't until I became a designer that I understood that type of creation had a name.
Designers are people who create unto an end. They have a goal they are working to achieve, an audience they are creating for, and that guides their decisions. They take what does not work and give it life so abundantly that it can bless the lives of those who use it.
Being able to accurately describe why I make things has been such a gift. One I would like to pass on for those of you who may feel that 'artist' doesn't describe you too.

I actually have a question in regards to how characters are drawn.
Is there a reason why the eastern side of fandoms spaces dislike it when characters are drawn and colored with darker skintones? One would simply assume it's colorism and racism right off the bat, but I heard there were other reasons as well (beauty standards)
I'd like to know more about this instead of simply jumping to conclusions.
I mean. Colorism and beauty standards are deeply intertwined, anon, both here and in Japan.
Like in the US, many people in Japan don't like to admit the racism and colorism that's ingrained in their society, and tend to pretend that there isn't any.
From an american point of view-- one that isn't educated in Japan's cultural history and the types of racist tropes that one sees in their media-- racism in japanese media can often be easy to miss.
I have a whole essay in me somewhere about this but like--
trust me anon, you do not want to look at Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom or Pokemon Legends Arceus while knowing about the history of Japanese racism and colonialism.
Legends Arceus in particular is about as culturally sensitive as Disney's Pocahontas.

ISSUE 1: Manifesto of an Extraterrestrial OUT NOW
Tumblr media
Spring 2023, 14 creatives got together to create something magical and other-worldly that captures the rawness of feeling alien and non-conforming. Our special project came together as Deviate Magazine’s first issue, a work centered around extraterrestrialism, fashion, and culture.
I’d personally describe it as a bad bitch’s diary, a creative’s Bible, and an intellectual’s Mecca. It’s juicy, it’s sexy, and most importantly, it’s REAL.
It’s available now!
----
Browse the full edition of Deviate Magazine's first issue: Manifesto of an Extraterrestrial HERE for free!
For updates on the magazine, forthcoming issues, and everything else Deviate, subscribe to our email list HERE
Check out our website HERE to see all the visuals that make up this first issue
-----
Deviate Magazine, in all forms, hopes to make a point that those who deviate from the norms and more traveled roads are neither inherently bad nor unacceptable.
Instead, we are the changers, inspirations, and the future. This magazine not only unites young creatives who spearhead and consume the magazine, but it will allow the our communities to enjoy art and literature from the lens of marginalized people.
Deviate allows us to be the authors of our own stories, and speak on our experiences through our own terms.

Today is the Finals day of Te Matatini, and if you’re not watching already you should really tune in! Te Matatini is a kapa haka (Māori performing arts) competition in Aotearoa that’s often called the Olympics of Kapa Haka. The performances are absolutely stunning to watch!! As an American who just learned about this event, it’s been really cool to find out more about Māori culture while admiring some absolutely breath-taking art. It’s available to stream live or watch prerecorded on TVNZ or Haka Translate, with live translations in many different languages available! Even if you miss the live finals today, to my knowledge the competition will still be available to stream for a few more days afterwards. Unfortunately those websites are only available to people in Australia or Aotearoa, but with a little bit of stubbornness and a decent VPN you can watch from anywhere. (I’ve been using the free VPN TunnelBear, with the only downside being that every now and then I run out of free data and have to make a new account.) They also have a donation fund set up to help communities affected by Cyclone Gabrielle, so if you want to donate this is a great place to do that! https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/te-matatini-o-te-aroha
