i know wwdits s5 just ended and most of us are happy about it but like i still feel there is room to critique on how just badly the female characters are written.
literally the first 3 seasons, nadja is quite literally the only main female character. the only other side characters that pop up more than an episode are jenna and charmaine. the only female relationship that nadja has is quite literally with the ghost version of herself and then jenna (but then she dips after the first season).
then season 4 happens and while we get the guide and nadja, the fact it took 4 seasons for there to be another main female character and an actual main female relationship is just horrendous. but even that doesn't make up for how bad the atrocity that is the character marwa.
yes, marwa's character is meant to show how truly fucked up nandor is but if marwa is quite literally the third main female character for that show, i don't think that's the time to fuck up on that representation and use her as a plot device. marwa quite literally has all her autonomy and free-will taken away and then her arc ends with her, a woman of color (and the only one besides guillermo's mother that makes more than one reoccurrence) being turned into a white man. if you were on wwdits twt at least, you know there was a fair amount of (rightful) backlash against that horrendous decision but nothing can change the fact that someone thought that was a good decision and no one in the writer's room felt the need to be like "hey this is a bad idea"
and in season 5, yes the prime focus is on guillermo and nandor and how the former was turned into a vampire and how the latter would react but nadja is still a main character on the show. they could've showed how she connects with the women of little antipaxos or even continue her relationship with the guide from season 4. i know this part does get addressed in the finale but also nadja quite literally says she wants more female friends and the guide is right there and yes it's supposed to be a bit but it quite literally is such an ooc for nadja considering prior the guide, she welcomes most women that she sees and even helps those that are getting treated badly by men.
so nadja treats the guide horribly and ignores her and it's all for the sake of what? the guide getting fed up and locking her (and the other vampires) up so nandor can find about guillermo being a vampire because of course female relationships have to uplift the men in some way.
anyways, that's all. call me reaching. call the lack of female characters to be a satire or whatnot-- i just think that it's a bit fucked up.

one thing i really liked about the prison break in andor was that there was no question of “what if we’re releasing actually bad guys” and part of it we literally saw cassian get arrested for walking but assuming that there were genuinely bad people in narkina 5 (e.g. murderers) there wasn’t any discussion in the prison arc by any of the characters “oh what if yanno murderers get loose and they kill some more” it’s that the treatment of those prisoners was simply inhumane and their crimes can never justify the way they were being treated by the empire

i will never understand why so many queer people insist on how "love simon is for the straights" and it's like yeah there were some problems with how simon's outing was handled by his friends but i don't think some people understood the impact that film had? i remember seeing the trailer, in theaters, on new years eve 2017. i had realized almost a year earlier, at the age of 12, i was queer. seeing that trailer, being a scared 13 year old girl who had only came out to her lesbian best friend at that point, and seeing a mainstream popular film about a closeted queer teenager that was geared towards me and other teenagers about coming out and being queer and being ourselves-- that meant everything to me.
and when i read the book a week after i saw the movie, it was my first ever queer book i ever read and love, simon was the first queer movie i ever saw. to see a mainstream movie that dealt with being queer and coming out and seeing myself in film for the first time? it meant the world.
so no, love, simon is not for the straights and it's inherent. the writer of the book, becky albertali, is a queer woman. the director, greg berlanti, is a gay man. the love interest, blue, was played by a queer actor, keiynan lonsdale. and there are probably so many other queer voices who made that film so saying "for the straights" is just diminishing every single queer voice on that film and frankly, just an ignorant statement: a film that is unabashedly queer will never be for the straights.

i think the thing that i really just do not like about nurchi’s death (besides the obvious reason of another dark skin black character being killed off in a show that’s already notorious for doing such thing) is that it doesn’t make sense? i mean sure it could be a commentary about “upholding facism doesn’t mean it’ll protect you from it” but we already saw that with timm and which just makes it unnecessary. to make it even further unnecessary is what reason did nurchi have to rat cassian out? all we know about nurchi is that cassian owes money to him. that’s it. that’s all. we do know he wants his money badly which makes him dislike cassian because cassian still hasn’t paid up. that’s the reason for his dislike against cassian. but then in episode 7 when cassian returns to ferrix, he gives bix money to give to the people he owes-- including nurchi. now it could be assumed that bix didn’t want to give nurchi the money but what reason does she have not to? and then nurchi just happens to be there when he overhears a conversation a dozen yards away about how cassian is showing up to the funeral (and maybe i’ll suspend my belief for this one-- it is star wars after all-- but i’ll still mention how much of a huge fucking coincidence this is) so this leaves me to my main thing is that if nurchi got his money (which it’s fair to assume so given that implication of cassian literally telling bix to pay back all the people he owes) why does he rat cassian out? like maybe im just missing something but if he eventually got his money back like??? and then that bites nurchi in the ass and he gets killed and it’s another black character getting killed off when he could’ve just ran away after seeing the riot and his ending would’ve been ambiguous which would be so much better than what we got instead of another black character getting killed off (compared to the black characters that get to live and there’s like 3 of them)

"okay" will always be my favorite response to anything negative. like a customer was complaining to me about our prices and i literally just said "okay" and shrugged. my mom is trying to apologize to me for something but i'm still mad at her-- "okay". a customer yesterday was lecturing me on how to do my job and i literally just responded with "okay". like it's just such a powerful response. like it's like the epitome of "i'm acknowledging you but i literally just could not care less about what you have to say". what a beautiful word

hey all! for the sake of organizing stuff, i'm just moving to my main blog @mundifinis. when this post has been published, my queue will have run out and i won't be posting anymore.
i'll still post star wars stuff on there but it's combined with my other interests as well (but it's mainly other text posts of random stuff). feel free to follow me there but if you don't want to that's totally fine!
