a younger brand new Asian-American actress would’ve been far better casting for live action Mulan 1. to match Mulan’s coming-of-age story and spirit!!!!! 2. to introduce a FRESH face. if Disney put in as much effort for Mulan’s casting as they did any other white role - they put obv thought and effort into finding the PERFECT FIT - Mulan could’ve been a powerful cultural moment for us... I would have cried. we would’ve embraced her so hard but we can never have nice things-
ik spiderman is completely fictional but there were tobey fans for his peter parker, and andrew fans for his spiderman. they invested in finding the perfect fit for both bc they knew FANS CARE. when they want to, they invest in the actor who will be their brand and face of a beloved character. mulan is beloved by the AA community. li shang is a bicon. they know this. they said wdgaf and catered everything to the Chinese market for the money. it hurts bc mulan meant everything to me growing up.
I agree.
Instead of someone that actually cares about representation, we got what’s-her-face that I don’t feel like mentioning.
In my mind, I’ve always pictured live-action Mulan as Brenda Song. Probably because she was such an icon growing up and because of fucking Wendy Wu lmao. Not hating though lol. But Brenda ain’t Chinese so that would be doing a disservice to Mulan which is why I would’ve preferred Olivia Liang. She’s upcoming talent that is yet to be seen. Plus I love her personality.
As with Spider-Man, yeah I grew up with Tobey Maguire. I saw all three of his movies in theaters so he’ll always be the original live-action Spider-Man to me. He has that awkward, dorky nerdness to him that is closer to the original canon Peter Parker whereas the new actors now are too silly or goofy or just outright annoying.
But back to Mulan, yeah they really messed this up lol. A lot of folks still want to support it though, not because of what’s-her-face but because of what Mulan meant to them, what she still means to us. Like for example, I don’t want to support the live-action but many of my friends and family members do. And I think it’s okay to be caught in-between. It’s okay to do either since it is a controversial issue that doesn’t have a simple right or wrong answer.

9 MARVEL CHARACTERS I WANT TO SEE IN THE CINEMATIC UNIVERSE
Just spitballing for fun here!
To celebrate September 9th, here are 9 Marvel Heroes I would like to see making their debut in the next phase of Marvel Cinematic Universe. By MCU, that means for the movies... NOT for TV. I'm not saying because the TV side is... bad (even if I do lean towards that conclusion, it would be a subjective opinion), but I just don't think TV would be able to do justice with these characters due to various constraints (budget, VFX quality, etc).
It's already widely reported that the 2019 "UNTITLED Avengers" will serve as the culmination of MCU since 2008. That means, the door to welcome new characters and IPs would be wide open. So these are the names I would like to see getting the spotlight, and perhaps, assemble into a new set of Avengers. One might easily notice that the names I'm including here are characters from the animated "Avengers Assemble" series. That's actually... INTENTIONAL. One, because that means Marvel Studios obviously has the rights to use them (or at least partially, like the Spider-Man characters). And two, because I want this post to have a similar look and feel. But I'm NOT leaving behind other characters who have yet to show up in that series. That's why there's a special 'Bonus' section afterwards... (^^)v
Now that the explanation is out of the way, let's start right away! Here they are, in alphabetical order:
Agent Venom
Coincidentally, the first one is already a tricky situation. Eugene "Flash" Thompson is a Spider-Man character, so the rights to him is owned by SONY. That company is already working on a "Venom" movie that might not (or might?) be part of the MCU, with Tom Hardy as the lead. On the other hand, a modern-bully version of Flash has already debuted in the MCU via this year's "Spider-Man: Homecoming", as brought to life by Tony Revolori. Of course, the prospect of seeing a talented actor like Revolori becoming a headlining hero, is just too good to ignore. Mind you, it might take him a very long time (until after the high school characters graduate?) before arriving in a possible bittersweet situation (in the comics, Flash had to lose his legs first). But overall, Marvel Studios has already sown the seed for Agent Venom's debut. I can only hope this idea will be realized somewhere in the future...
Hercules
Odd choice, huh? But hear me out. We haven't had a great Hercules movie for a long time (my favorite was still Disney's animated-musical version, and it differed massively from the mythology). So why not leave it to Marvel Studios to do justice for the figure, and make a HUGE name out of him? The comic version of Hercules Panhellenios is a struggling, washed-out, unemployed hero, who spends his time slacking around and being a disappointment to others. True to his metaphorical title as a fierce male lion, huh? This situation and condition would carry massive potentials to explore in the movies. He can also take over Thor Odinson's position to expand the MCU towards more Greek-based mythological stories. Would you like to see Herc fighting Cerberus or Hydra (the monster, not the NAZI organization) in live action? I sure do. Good ol' Herc has seen a return to spotlight recently, with his own solo comic series. So what an excellent time to promote him for his own movie too! Since Chris Hemsworth and Pratt are already in the MCU (IMO, both are giving off a strong Hercules vibe!), perhaps Marvel Studios can hire... I don't know, Joe Manganiello as the lead actor?
Hyperion
Another mythological-esque hero! Unlike Hercules though, Marcus Milton has a completely different origin, being descendant of... the Eternals. Yes, the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie series have already introduced this powerful race, which means, the route to Hyperion's debut is more or less smooth sailing. Interestingly, Hyperion is well known as part of the superhero team "Squadron Supreme". That means, if ever Marvel Studios needs a 'replacement' for the Avengers, this group is a good candidate. Just like Herc, Hyperion has returned to the limelight with a new comic series lately, eventhough it was cancelled after a few volumes. I admit, being a copy/parody of a certain DC hero, the character doesn't really have deep potentials. But that's why I trust Marvel Studios to give him the push he needed! As for the actor, for some reason, I would love to see John Krasinski in the role. Dude was considered to be Captain America before, right? And he's not another Chris. LOL.
Inferno
We're back to another tricky business. Dante Pertuz is a relatively new character, a modern version of Human Torch that FOX doesn't own. LOL. He's introduced in the recent years with the NuHumans storyline, which exactly leads to THE tricky situation. Yes, he's an Inhuman, and his origin story is deeply connected to the Inhumans Royal Family (specifically Gorgon). We all know that Marvel TV had taken over the Inhumans IP and turn it into a TV series (complete with bad writing, bad design, bad reviews *smh*). I'm VERY concerned the division would also want to capitalize on Inferno to boost the show's appeal, and I personally don't think that's a wise decision. Visual-effect wise, Mark Kolpack has admitted that creating Robbie Reyes' Ghost Rider's flaming head and chains for the 4th season of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." was taxing and demanding. It's basically a movie-level VFX that required extra hours and patience, not something that can usually be rushed in a TV deadline. Now imagine doing that with Inferno, who emits flame from all over his body! But there's a bigger stake, here. You see, Dante's clearly a latino hero, and we haven't had one headlining an MCU movie until now. With his visual powers and relatable storyline (struggling with being Inhumans, a minority, rock star, and all), a movie would privilege Dante with the justice he deserve. I'm aware that highly likely Marvel Studios will be going with a cosmic Sam Alexander's Nova instead, and that's okay. But Inferno would be more current, if not more likeable choice.
Ka-Zar
Kevin Plunder came in to this list, with the same reason to Hercules. Because he's Marvel version of Tarzan! Hollywood has been trying to create a good Tarzan movie over and over again, and they're either an okay hit or a sad miss. As far as I know, none of them were ever able to please every audience, not even Disney's animated version. But Ka-Zar is different, because he carries more 'fantasy' than just trying to ape the King of the Jungle. The setting of his adventures, the "Savage Land" that's hidden deep in Antarctica, would be something magnificent to feature in the big screen. We've got Asgard, Kamar-Taj, Wakanda, why not add Savage Land too! Don't forget Zabu, his saber-toothed best friend, which would require massive CGI work. Suffice to say, the things I'm reading and hearing about Ka-Zar only leads to one conclusion: I want to see him in a live action movie! Now, who can portray him? Hmmm... a natural blond Brit like Charlie Hunnam, perhaps?
Ms. Marvel
All concerns I had for Dante, goes for Kamala Khan as well. Being a fellow Inhumans, there's been a rampant rumor recently that she'll be getting a TV series (supposedly the one John Ridley is working on). For me, that's a HUUUGE NOOOO. And due to THREE major reasons. ONE, similar to Inferno, TV budget won't be able to handle the VFX required to showcase her Inhuman ability with the right look and feel. Look no further than that underwhelming looking "Inhumans" series as example! Would you like to see an iconic figure like Kamala being reduced to a 'disaster' with the excuse of making her 'grounded'? You know, like what Marvel TV have already done to Medusa? I certainly DON'T. Kamala is basically the modern version of Mr. Fantastic, and we all know that even FOX have tried to do Reed Richards right in the movies several times, but still couldn't perfectly nail it. Downgrading this situation to a TV level would only make it worse. TWO, Kamala is a genuinely likeable and well-beloved character that easily captures the heart and attention of many readers throughout the world. If the 60s-90s had Peter Parker, Kamala's the youth representative for the modern world. Hip, cool, and current (being a social media freak and all), but also kind and caring... eventhough she's a triple-decker minority (Female, South Asian heritage, and Moslem) living in a racist country. Which leads me to the final reason. THREE, her story will have a MUCH BIGGER impact to the world as a movie. Releasing a Marvel Studios movie with her as the lead in an international market (including countries with Moslem as majority), would not only bank a great amount of money, but also sends the right messages: one, unlike its current government, Hollywood is NOT racist; two, that everyone can be a hero, regardless of their gender, race, and religion! Relegating a character this HUGE to a small-scoped TV series that not everyone can gain access to, would be a massive disservice. Kamala is the hero the world currently needs, so please don't undermine her into disappointments.
She-Hulk
Another tricky situation, though in this case, due to the confusing copyrights. Actor Mark Ruffalo has repeatedly said, that a Hulk solo movie won't be coming along the road because Universal has the distribution rights. What about his super-powered cousin, Jennifer Walters? It's unclear, but I can only assume that she has the same legal limitation. Thankfully, it also doesn't mean that she can't be used in a Marvel Studios movies. She just need to be included as part of an ensemble, that's all. The great thing about Jen, is that she's a lawyer and later a judge. Not only she's strong physically, but also academically. Won't that be a strong role model for young women and girls all around the world? We haven't really had a law angle in the superhero movies until now, with Daredevil occupying the Netflix universe. So bringing Jen into the light would be fresh and promising. As for who should play him, I don't have a particular choice, but someone with Award prestige like Emily Blunt, Charlize Theron, and/or Jennifer Lawrence would be a great get...
Songbird
Former villain turned Avengers? Yep, that premise alone would make a great story. Melissa Gold started off as a troubled woman, with broken family and harsh situation. Giving in to the world of crime (known as Screaming Mimi) was clearly her way to stay alive. Eventually she stumbled into the road of heroism with the Songbird moniker, and ended up becoming a full-time member of the Avengers. Just like the other characters I've included here, Melissa would be a great role model, especially for troubled teenagers. Her path of redemption proves that anyone, regardless of their past and issues, can be a hero too. An inspiring message that Marvel Studios need to share to the world. She doesn't sell enough as a solo movie? Well, then debuting her as part of the "Thunderbolts" would be equally okay for me. All the ingredients are already in the MCU anyway (Thunderbolt Ross, Helmut Zemo?). As for the actress, for some reason, I want to see Anna Kendrick in this role. Yeah, basically I just want to see her in a Marvel Studios movie, but I believe she would really bring justice to the gorgeous-designed Songbird.
White Tiger
We've already gotten an African "Black Panther", now it's time for a hispanic White Tiger! Her powers come from the mystical side, and since "Doctor Strange" has opened up the gateway to supernatural, we can have more heroes with this kind of origin story! I'm personally going with Ava Ayala, and not Angela del Toro, eventhough either of them would be wonderful. Why White Tiger? Same reason to Dante, and in a way, Kamala. Sure, the MCU have included numerous Latino actors who either got lost in the background (Jonathan Pangborn?), or turned out to be a scene stealer (looking at you Luis!!!), but we haven't really had a major hispanic hero in the MCU until now. More importantly, a female one! Debuting Ava in the MCU would also, once again, sends off a great message. The US government have been really discriminative about immigrants lately, including the hispanics. Putting Ava in the spotlight would remind everyone that South Americans CAN be heroes, and not criminals like what they're being wrongfully accused for. We truly need characters like this right away! As for who should play her, I'm currently setting my eyes on Gina Rodriquez of the hit series "Jane the Virgin".
Honorable Ment... SPECIAL ADDITIONS
The next characters are those who (as far as my memory serves) haven't made their debut in the "Avengers Assemble" series. So they sort of... didn't fulfill the basic requirement for my initial list. But it'd be unfair leaving them behind like that, right? That's why they are special 'Bonus' additions. Without further ado, in alphabetical order:
Brother Voodoo
For the record, I'm not being racist by sidelining the only black character to this section. The reason I put him here, is because his debut in the MCU movies is pretty much confirmed. Daniel Drumm, big brother to Jericho Drumm, has already made his appearance in "Doctor Strange" as the original protector of New York Sanctum Santorum. And director Scott Derrickson has already hinted that his death would lead to consequences, including the arrival of Jericho. Debuting Jericho as a sort of sidekick to Stephen Strange would be nice, but it would be much better if he gets his own movie too. Yes, there's an issue regarding his name, because using Voodoo might... well, attract criticsm. But titles can be tweaked, right? Considering Jericho ends up becoming a Sorcerer Supreme too, I believe he'll be perfect as the next black hero to headline his own movie.
Shang-Chi
I've already repeatedly mentioned that Marvel Studios NEED a major hero representing minorities, and this is another great candidate. Marvel Studios have brought several prominent Asian characters into the MCU, like Wong, Mantis (eventhough she's an alien), and Helen Cho. Yet they all share similar characteristic: they are all supporting cast. If Marvel Studios want to play it 'safe' and headline an East Asian lead character, then Shang-Chi is the go-to-guy. Nope, I'm not undermining him, but just pointing out how easy he would appeal to the audience. Shang-Chi is in a way, Marvel Comics' response to Bruce Lee. We all know that the world LOVES some Bruce Lee. And Shang is more than just a Bruce Lee copy, he's also a master of espionage who's determined to take down his own father's criminal empire. Pretty much a solid recipe for a James Bond-styled wuxia blockbuster hit, am I right! "Doctor Strange" has teased the use of martial arts to support magic, a hero like Shang would put it upfront as the star of the party. Marvel TV might have taken the stamp on Iron Fist (with mixed response), so Shang is the opportunity for Marvel Studios to do it RIGHT! Jon Woo, Ang Lee, or Jacky Chan can direct this, and as for the actor, Godfrey Gao is my top pick. But Ludi Lin, Philip Ng (star of the fictional Bruce Lee biopic "Birth of the Dragon"), or even Yoshi Sudarso (who is Chinese-Indonesian) would be fantastic nonetheless.
Spider-Woman
The last tricky affair of the day! Jessica Drew is called Spider-Woman, but she uses the 'Spider' moniker by name only, and unrelated to Spider-Man. That's why until now, it's currently unclear whether her movie rights is owned by SONY or not. She's actually one of the superheroine I've been itching to see in the MCU, but admittedly, these questions surrounding her place always put me on a weird crossroad. Drew is connected to Hydra, the High Evolutionary, and has always been a full-blown Avengers. And all of those screams MCU. She's also the best friend of Carol Danvers, so I honestly want to see her show up in "Captain Marvel". Her comic origin story sort of fits with "Captain Marvel" 90s setting too. Have Jessica encounter Carol when she was a child, then Jessica was put into stasis for years, only to wake up as a superpowered woman in the present day. And then she meets Carol again, and team up as the new Avengers. All's well ends well! I personally want to see Tatiana Maslany of the famous "Orphan Black" for this character, but Marvel Studios can always cast an Asian actress (like Constance Wu or Celina Jade) due to Drew's ambiguous background.
Young Avengers
This one initially started off with just William "Billy" Kaplan and partner Theodore "Teddy" Altman. A sweet pairing more famously known as Wiccan and Hulkling. My way of thinking was, it'd be rude and unfair to name just one of them, right? If Marvel Studios wants to go ahead and feature an LGBT representation, these guys are the one they should use. Is it possible? There's a hint that we'll be seeing Vision and Wanda Maximoff's relationship evolve in "Avengers: Infinity War". Perhaps somehow they end up bending reality, and Billy is magically conceived? Meanwhile, "Captain Marvel" confirmed that the alien race Skrull CAN be used in the MCU, so a half Kree-Skrull (his biological father is the original/male Captain Marvel) like Teddy is more than just possible. Basically, that movie is the only gateway needed for his debut in the MCU.
But then I began thinking. Why am I leaving behind Billy's twin brother Thomas "Tommy" Shepherd? Poor Pietro Maximoff was killed off in just one movie, why am I sidelining another Speed-ster? That's NOT right. Then the more I think of it, the bigger the scope gets. We have a Hawkeye and Ant-Man who are both fathers in the MCU. Why not include their protege/child? Katherine "Kate" Bishop might not be Clint Barton's daughter, but the two shared a special connection that would be great to depict on the big screen. And then there's Cassandra "Cassie" Lang who looks up to her father Scott, and aspires to be a size-shifting heroine of her own. Cassie has already debuted in the MCU as played by Abby Ryder Fortson, why not promote her into a hero too? And how could I miss out the lesbian latina America Chavez? Fitting in comfortably to all the diversity talk I've stated above, America is not only female, latina, she's also an LGBT representative. Another triple-decker like Kamala. JACKPOT!
So yeah, that's how I ended up with Young Avengers instead. If Marvel TV has "The Runaways", then Marvel Studios can have these equally (if not more prospective) young heroes! If we assume that we will no longer see the Avengers following the 2019 movie, then introducing the Young Avengers would be the most logical continuation. This movie doesn't even to take place in the present time, but a bit further in the future, or even in an alternate reality. That's the function of Reality Stone and Multi-verse, right? This team represents youth, fun, and diversity, sending all the right messages to the world. And at the same, enabling older actors like Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Benedict Cumberbatch and others to serve briefly as mentor figures. There's also one other reason why this special team ends up being the last entry on this post (which is unintentional, to be honest): because I REALLY want them to show up in the MCU! \(*v*)/
So there you have it, the 9 (plus 4+) Marvel Heroes I want to see coming to the big screen. In the end though, this is nothing more than a personal opinion. It's obviously a very subjective thinkpiece, so anyone else might not have the same idea (if you do have your take, then do post them, I'd gladly read it!). I do however, hope that someone, anyone from Marvel Studios would somehow stumble upon this, read it, and put these names into considerations. I sincerely feel they will bring something NEW to the MCU, while continue conveying message of hope, inspiration, kindness, and good. After all, that's what Marvel Studios movies are for, right? Thanks for reading... enjoy your September 9th! Even if it might be just a regular day for most of us... XD

The Chinoiserie Genre, Revisited
(What follows is a repost from April 2017, updated to include the chinoiserie explosion of the past three years.)
Readers familiar with the Pulp Revolution have certainly by now heard that with the death of the pulps, many genres fell out of favor. Hero pulps, sword and sorcery, and planetary romance have all declined from the heyday of the 1930s, often replaced entirely by other expressions of fantasy and science fiction. Yet as we return to reading the pulps instead of what people say about the pulps, whispers of other genres appear. For instance, hidden among the three proud pillars of weird fiction – horror, science fiction, and fantasy – is a fourth genre, one as exotic as its name: chinoiserie.
Chinoiserie first started in the 18th century in the visual arts. European artists impressed by Chinese artistry began to imitate the Eastern designs, incorporating them into pottery, furniture, decor, gardening, and even music. The appetite for chinoiserie grew with the perception of China as a highly civilized culture, even beyond the European norms. The artistic movement continues to the present day, with many works of chinoiserie available online. As with many artistic movements, this fascination with exotic cultures made a jump into literature.
Literary chinoiserie began as an exploration of unfamiliar Oriental cultures as perceived by Western writers.  While the visual arts quickly distinguished between Chinese-influenced chinoiserie and Japanese-influenced japonisme, no such distinction was made in the literary world, with chinoiserie describing Persian, Byzantine, Japanese, Tibetan, and Chinese stories. (Despite convention, I will be using chinoiserie and japonisme to differentiate the two flavors of literary chinoiserie.) However, the term quickly narrowed to Pacific Asian cultures, with the Chinese association dominating. Literary chinoiserie expresses itself in three major forms; the exploration of Chinese lands, the exploration of Western ideas of Chinese culture in both its homeland and its diaspora settlements, and the exploration of an idealized China that never was. Occasionally, Western culture would dress up in chinoiserie robes for the purpose of satire, as in Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado. But common to all expressions is the idea of the outsider looking into another culture not his own, and not always understanding what is seen. One does not write chinoiserie of their own culture. The Chinese author of the Three Body Problem, Cixin Liu, writes Chinese science fiction, while Peter Grant writes chinoiserie science fiction dealing with Chinese triads in space in his Maxwell Saga.
Perhaps the most sensationalized version of chinoiserie, yellow peril is the tendency of pulp writers to use Chinese as villains, as popularized by the Lord of Strange Deaths himself, Fu Manchu. Hidden in every shadow were copycat secret societies led by cunning occult mentalists and sensuous deceitful dragon ladies. This was primarily a staple of weird menace, a sensationalist genre of lurid stories where a dreadful and mysterious terror, usually occult or supernatural, threatens to overtake the hero unless he acts. This Chinese threat was not the only staple of the genre, as fantastic, mythological, and scientific terrors would also loom in the pulps, however the trope was common enough to have its subversions and aversions, with the honorable and heroic detective Charlie Chan as the most famous antithesis to yellow peril villains.
Chinoiserie’s fascination with exotic China found a home in the pulps. The Shadow’s first adventure, The Living Shadow, found the Knight of Darkness playing master of disguise in Chinatown to root out a hidden killer. Counter to convention, this killer, Diamond Bert, only posed as a Chinese mastermind. Among the imitators of the Shadow, the Green Lama featured an American student of the Tibetan Lamas using Eastern secrets to defeat Western criminals. Sidney Herschel Small wrote adventures of Asia and American Chinatowns. E. Hoffman Price led the parade of writers of Weird Tales who would use chinoserie, many of which would claim that their stories had been discovered in the markets of China and Istanbul. Clark Aston Smith wrote a prose poem describing two lovers separated by centuries in his “Chinoiserie.” Manly Wade Wellman’s occult investigator, John Thunstone, would test his metal and that of a holy blade against a cursed Gurka honor sword in “The Dai Sword.”
As the pulp age faded, so did literary chinoiserie. But the fascination with China lived on. Robert van Gulik found a copy of The Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee in a second-hand store and translated the fictional account of Tang dynasty judge Di Renjie into English. Van Gulik then wrote an entire series of new adventures for Judge Dee, starting with The Chinese Maze Murders. The adventures of the Sinanju master assassin Chuin and his worthless assistant Remo Williams filled book after book of the men’s adventure series The Destroyer. Andre Norton brought a taste of China to gothic romance in The White Jade Fox, where an antebellum governess must keep her charge’s Chinese treasures safe from her stepmother. E. Hoffman Price would return to chinoiserie in The Devil Wives of Li Fong with the tale of the serpent Mei Ling as she protects her family from Taoist magic. Finally, in perhaps the brightest gem of the chinoiserie crown, Barry Hughart’s Bridge of Birds chronicles the adventures of the sage Master Li and the villager Number Ten Ox as they face off against crooked peddlers, rabbity tax assessors, exalted lords, and the machinations of the gods themselves in search of a cure for the kuu poison affecting their village’s children.
Inspired by Bruce Lee’s fame and Hong Kong cinema, movies such as John Carpenter’s cult-classic Chinatown misadventure Big Trouble in Little China and Disney’s Mulan took the torch of chinoiserie from literature, created beloved classics of the silver screen in the process. Chinoiserie also moved to video games with the gory martial-arts fighting series Mortal Kombat and Bioware’s  Jade Empire, an RPG homage to the Shaw Brothers‘ kung-fu movies, while the short-lived Firefly television series added a Chinese voice to the strange conversation between Japanese samurai films, American westerns, and science fiction as a whole. More recently, the martial arts cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender explored a fantasy version of China, mixing Western alchemical elements with Chinese martial arts. The tradition continues into this decade, with Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA starring in The Man with the Iron Fists, a loving tribute to the grindhouse days of blacksploitation and the Shaw Brothers’ cinema.
As China moved from the written page into the theaters and small screens, Japan took over the written word. James Clavell’s Shogun and Jessica Amanda Salmonson’s fantasy adventures of female samurai Tomoe Gozen are among the first novels reflecting the shift from chinoiserie to japonisme. As Japan rose again to become an economic power and a media giant in the 1980s, American fascination with the Land of the Rising Sun grew, spilling over into its stories. Perceptions of present day Japan are explored in thrillers like Michael Crichton’s Rising Sun, lost-in-translation misadventures like Isaac Adamson’s Tokyo Suckerpunch, and lost to reality gamer webcomics such as Megatokyo. Continuing the tradition created by Lafcadio Hearn’s Kwaidan, the folklore and mythology of Japan are explored in novels such as Kij Johnson’s The Fox Woman and Lian Hearn’s Tale of Shikanoko series. Japanese history from the Heian court to the Warring States forms the backdrop for I. J. Parker’s Akitada mysteries, the Yamada Monogatari series of Richard Parks, and the classic Tales of the Otori. Japanese elements flavor John Wright’s Daughter of Danger, Neil Gaiman‘s Sandman and American Gods, and indie works such as Rawle Nyanzi’s Sword & Flower and countless others. And the thirst for all things Japanese (and japonisme) has yet to be quenched.
Perhaps the reason why chinoiserie and japonisme do not get the recognition that other genres do is because they combine so well with other genres. Chinoiserie rarely stands alone in a story, but crosses with action, with detective mystery, with noir, with fantasy, and even with science fiction to bring a exotic flavor to those genres. It has been easy to lose sight of the influence of chinoiserie as this weird fiction genre has drifted into the historical fiction and literature shelves. However, the influence of the East upon weird fiction is unmistakable, and chinoiserie is as much a founding genre as fantasy, science fiction, and horror.
Since this article was first penned in April 2017, the fashions of publishing, both traditional and independent, have brought easy access to original works from Asian countries, including web novels, light novels, literary RPGs, wuxia martial arts epics, and xianxia chi cultivation epics. As the number of Chinese, Korean,  and Japanese novels in English increased, and even Russian copies of the same genres, they inspired a similar boom in chinoiserie.
Some Western writers penned their own adventures in a mysterious East that never was, but should have been. See M. L Wang’s The Sword of Kaigen, Tao Wong’s A Thousand Li series, and M. H. Johnson’s Silver Fox and Western Hero series. Others wrote Western versions of favorite Eastern genres, including the entirety of the current litRPG/GameLit scene, an early boom in kaiju monsters, and the regrettable prevalence of harem sexual comedies. Brandon Varnell has distinguished himself as the front runner in original English light novels. And a giant robot scene continues to simmer beneath the science fiction waves of space marines and stormtroopers, led by Chaney and Taggert’s The Messenger series and Brian Niemeier’s Combat Frame XSeed. Finally, a few writers, like Dakota Krout in his Divine Dungeon series, have melted Eastern and Western ideas and influences into Matrix-like newness. And for each author mentioned, there are five others awaiting discovery.
Readers’ thirsts for chinoiserie and japonisme have yet to be quenched, and those with that taste may soon find themselves in a silver age of Eastern-flavored adventures.

Warnings: none other than cavity-inducing fluff 💖 FIRST FIC AHHH!!? Really bad writing and weird ending? angst if u squint really tight. also so many references to Filipino pop culture
Tumblr media
Ay, shet.
Red, white, and pink invade all your senses on your commute to Midtown High. Bouquets were blocking your view everywhere you went. Every couple in the subway and hallway was holding hands. Hell, even your parents were extra lovey-dovey this morning as Yeng Constantino sweetly sang on the radio before you left for school.
Love is in the air. It's just too bad Lysol doesn't come in travel-sized cans.
You would have gladly forgotten about this dreaded consumerist holiday. You could have even gaslit yourself into thinking it's Easter if it weren't for-
"Happy Valentine's Day, y/n", a chirpy voice greets you.
There he is: Peter Parker, in all his brown-eyed glory. If it weren't for him, Valentine's Day probably wouldn't hurt this much.
He's giving you a kind smile. His boyish demeanor is endearing all the time. It's unfair. It's not his fault he's so fucking pretty. Butterflies flutter in your stomach. You've been in love with him far too long to even keep track anymore.
He first spoke to you in first grade when other kids were making fun of the way you looked and the way you spoke English. Everything about you was ridiculous to them and no matter how much you cursed in your native language, it didn't really matter if they could never understand you. Peter took your hand and promised to keep you safe as you both hid underneath the slide (considered by 5-year-olds as the most impenetrable hiding place on the playground).
Then, the bullies started hurting Peter too. Because apparently your words only added fuel to fire, you did what you had to: you took action. And threw a rock. And may have hit some kids' chin.
You and Peter Parker have been inseparable since.
Lately, though, you rarely see Peter outside of school. Weekly movie nights are either canceled or interrupted. He's always rushing somewhere when school ends and now you have to resort to texting him at ungodly hours of the night/day (if he even bothers replying). Whenever you ask him where he’s going, he either says something about an important internship or he gives you a sly grin as he does a flattering impression of you saying, “Si-kreeeeeeeeeettt…” (Secret)
You turn to him as you irritatedly wretch open your locker.
"Peter, 'Happy' and 'Valentine's' don't belong in the same sentence if you're single."
He doesn't reply but he smiles widely with his eyes crinkling, in that bright sunshine-y way that makes your heart clench, your mood lightens, and your day just a little a million times better. You can't help but smile back.
Ya got it bad.
"Do you know you have flowers in your hair?"
Before you can object, he reaches out a hand to pull out a few red rose petals and buds from your already messy hair. His face scrunches in concentration as he focuses on being gentle, knowing how you feel about people touching your hair. His hand lightly brushes against your cheek when he pulls it back. Your eyes meet.
Pakshet.
All the clever retorts die on your tongue and all you can shyly say is, "Thanks."
You tuck hair behind both your ears and hurriedly start pulling books out of your locker. Peter smirks a little and blushes, bouncing on the balls of his feet.
When you finally meet his lovely beautiful gorgeous eyes again, he asks, "Got any plans tonight?"
"Yeah, actually. A double date", You playfully quipped as you went through your bag, missing the disappointment in his eyes.
"Rea-Really?", he whispers.
"Me and my strawberry ice cream are meeting up with Kathryn and Daniel later tonight"
Relief floods his face as he sighs and leans back on the locker door next to yours.
"Oh, Liza and Enrique canceled?"
"They won't even return my calls anymore!" You whined with a grin.
In all your years of friendship, your love of cheesy Pinoy movies and TV may have rubbed off on Peter. Not that he's complaining about the presence of Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, although he's more partial to Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil. You two alternate between Star Wars (or any Sci-Fi Peter can get his hands on) and the worst of Asian telenovelas (most of which you spend hours debating about). May also watches them (though she will never admit that).
Tumblr media
3 months earlier…
"Wait a minute, wait a minute", he says as pauses his laptop playing 'The Half Sisters'. You hum in acknowledgment.
"So, Karina had twins…
"Yes."
"...But Diana and Ashley have different fathers?!"
"...Yes?"
His hands wave like a muppet, closing and opening his mouth, hopelessly trying to make sense of the episode.
"That's!! Not?? Possible??"
"It wouldn't be if Diana and Ashley were identical but they're not so yeah, it works…" You shrug, shoving more popcorn in your mouth, trying to contain your laughter.
"But there's like a 1 in a million chance of that actually happening!"
"It's a telenovela, Peter. Anything, and I mean anything, can happen. Don't try to argue with the logic, it only hurts the brain."
"Y/NNN!"
Tumblr media
"So, which ones are you watching this time? Can't Help Falling in Love? Crazy Beautiful You?"
Does he realize what he's saying? The fucking implications? He can't be this clueless, can he?
"I'm actually thinking, The Hows of Us...or Barcelona: A Love Untold"
He laughs before turning to you, "Fantasy double dates aside though, I gotta ask:..."
"Yes?", you replied a little too quickly.
"How did you get flowers in your hair?"
He notices you deflate.
You chuckle, "Oh, Valentine's Day decided to bitch-slap me."
His brows furrow before you clarify ashamedly, looking down at your shoes, "I got smacked by four bouquets on my way here."
He doesn't laugh or even chuckle. His honey-brown eyes find yours and his soft warm hands reach out to hold your cheeks. His thumbs are right on your cheekbones. Dizziness fills your head. He leans in closer, your foreheads touching, his longing gaze never strays from your face.
"Are you okay?", he softly asks.
Lord, kunin niyo na po ako. (Lord, take me please.)
Your mouth is dry. All you can do is nod.
"Y/n…", he softly whispers.
The bell rings. Peter Parker lets go of you and your world grows a little colder. He smiles and nods before a sea of students separates you two.
You shake your head trying to remove the memory of Peter's hands on your face before walking to your first class.
Tumblr media
After class, you realized you never asked Peter about his Valentine plans. Partly because you couldn't bear to think he was spending it with someone who wasn't you, being all romantic and totally not platonic.
He catches you as you walk out of the gates, stopping in front of you.
"Hi", he smiles again. Your heart rate spikes. "Hello"
Before an awkward silence settles or before you lose your nerve, you ask him, "Do you have plans tonight?"
His face falls. "I actually might have that internship thing tonight."
"Oh, ok." You pause. It's better than him having a date. "Good luck with that." You smile tightly.
"Thanks", he looks at you before continuing...
"If your ice cream flakes out on you and I get done early, maybe I can join you on that double date with KathNiel?"
"Unlikely, ice cream never abandons people." He laughs at your lame joke. God, why must his laugh be perfect?
"But if the ice cream just so happens to get sick of me, and you just so happen to be free, sure. I know Kathryn and Daniel won't mind." You grin.
He looks down before staring into your eyes. "I'd never get sick of you, y/n."
Tumblr media
You're halfway through your second movie of the night when an inconsistent tapping distracts you from Liza Soberano's rage-filled monologue. You pause it.
Spiderman is outside your window. Carrying a small reusable grocery bag.
Tangina. (Fuck)
Your phone next to you starts to ring. You hesitantly pick it up.
"You brighten my day, showing me my direction. You're coming to me, giving me inspiration" Peter's voice croons through your phone.
You look at the superhero outside your window, who is holding a phone to his ear.
You freeze. The world stops. Your brain buffers. Millions of questions spring to your mind. Spiderman rips off his mask to reveal your sweaty-haired best friend, Peter fucking Parker. Your body goes on autopilot as you put the phone down and open your window. Peter smiles as he gets into the room.
"How can I ask for more from you, my dear?", he whispers-sings.
Before he can finish the lyrics, however, you start to slap his chest repeatedly.
"PUNYETA" Slap. "KA" Slap. "GAGO!" Slap. (YOU’RE AN IDIOT!)
"Y/n! I'm sorry, I couldn't tell you yet! I had to protect you! No one else knows!" He weakly tries to defend himself. He holds your arms down in a face-to-face embrace and in your rage, you don't realize how close your faces are.
"ALAM MO ANG SARAP MONG SAMPALIN! Trying to protect me?! By leaving me hanging during our conversations? Never knowing where you're going that's so important? BEST FRIEND KITA EH! KUNG HINDI MO KAYA SABIHIN SA'KIN, EDI KANINO PA?! ALAM MO BA GAANO KAHIRAP ISIPIN NA WALA KANG TIWALA SA'KIN?! MAHAL KITA KASI, GAGO!"
(I REALLY WANT TO SLAP YOUR FACE!... YOU’RE MY BEST FRIEND! IF YOU CAN’T TELL ME, WHO ELSE CAN YOU TELL?! DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO THINK THAT YOU DON’T TRUST ME?! IT’S BECAUSE I LOVE YOU, ASSHOLE!)
You know Peter doesn't understand Tagalog but you can't help it when your rage takes over. Liza Soberano taught you well.
Then, silence falls. Peter lets go of you to sit on the sofa. You're still standing a few feet away from him.
"I know what you're saying", he whispers.
Shet.
"What?"
He looks up at you as you move closer, sitting near his feet.
"I know what you're saying. In Tagalog, I mean. Not everything, I’m not that good but I know some phrases. Especially that last one though…” He smiles boyishly.
God fucking damn it.
You blink several times. “How?”
“Apart from the whole Spiderman thing, which is just the internship I was talking about, I’ve been going to that Asian market you like so much. The one where you buy all your snacks. You told me once that the lady who runs it, Ate Nadine, is Filipino and so during my free time I go there and she teaches me Tagalog.”
You stay silent as you try to make sense of it all. Peter is learning Tagalog? Why? Why didn’t he go to you?
As if reading your mind, he continues. “It was supposed to be a Valentine’s Day surprise for you. That’s where I went after school, I bought these.” He opens the grocery bag, nearly forgotten on the floor, and pulls out all your favorite snacks. Dried mango, banana chips, Chuckee cartons, Chocnut, Haw-Haw, Inipit, Rebisco sandwiches in your favorite flavors…
You reply as you look at him, stunned, “You remembered.”
“Of course, I did. It’s you.”
You sit next to him, picking up and opening 2 Chuckee cartons and handing one to him.
“Why?”
"...Dahil mahal rin kita." (Because I love you too)
His pronunciation of the vowels was fairly off and his American accent was holding him back from rolling the r's, but it doesn't change the way your quickening heartbeat pounds in your ears.
Peter Parker loves you too.
He leans in, his face an inch away from your face. His eyes staring even deeper into yours.
"God, we're both idiots."
You grab his cheeks as you connect your lips to his soft ones and the world shatters. He responds instantly, closing his eyes and holding you by your waist. You can taste chocolate and toothpaste in the best weirdest way possible. Peter fills all your senses. His hands on your waist. His soft lips on yours. The warmth of his cheeks. There is too much space between the two of you as the kiss deepens.
The two of you almost forget that you need to breathe as you reluctantly pull away.
Once Peter's recovered from the kiss, the first thing he asks is, "Where are your parents?"
"Ugh, what a mood killer", you say playfully as you pull yourself into his lap and start playing with his hair. "Anyhoozle, they're having date night."
"Oh, so we have the whole house to ourselves?" He grins wickedly.
"Did you take off your shoes?"
"Always do when I'm here with you." He grins.
You pretend to think, "Wanna chaperone Liza and Enrique?"
"Oh, what happened to Kathryn and Daniel?"
"...They left when I started thinking of you."
You start assembling a little blanket pit with pillows and snacks. You sit next to Peter, who's changed his clothes, with his arms around your waist and your head on his shoulder.
"I have one question though before we restart the movie." He turns to you. You look up at him.
"Will you give me a smile in your heart?"
You kiss him. Yes

Diversify Yo Mothaf***in Comics
So APPARENTLY, and utterly unsurprisingly, all of the radical changes and race-bending and gender-bending, and even sexual-orientation-bending that Marvel Comics has been doing over the last few years? It hasn't actually been paying off in the one thing that matters: sales. And of course, the SJW crowd would probably be quick to lay the blame on those "evil straight white male" long-time comic fans who have stopped buying the comics due to these changes. But they would be only PARTIALLY right. Because the real truth here is, that all of these "vocal minority" SJW types, who cheer and applaud all of these changes, and even go so far as to demand MORE changes to fit their own personal ideologies and "identities"? A lot of them DON'T buy comics, nor read them. They are more than happy to offer token support (imagine that), to things in various forms of entertainment that fit their own agendas. But they don't actually PARTAKE in a lot of said media, least of which being comic books. So not only has Marvel been pissing in the faces of long-time readers with radical changes no one actually asked for, in the process LOSING a significant amount of those long-time reasons. But on the FLIP side of things, the SJW crowd who champion such shoe-horned changes, AREN'T picking up the slack by actually buying the comics with said changes they claim to love. Hence Marvel's sales over the last few years have actually dramatically slumped. I like what Stan Lee, THE father of a vast majority the most famous and popular Marvel Comics characters, had to say on the subject. Basically, to paraphrase, he said that there absolutely is is a place in comics for a Black, or Latino, or Asian, or Gay, or whatever superhero, even with their own solo-titles. BUT, that if you want those characters to exist, create NEW, interesting characters that fit those molds. DO NOT just force those kinds of aspects onto long-time, beloved, established characters. Doing so is a cheap way to generate buzz and TEMPORARY sales spikes (which seems to be all Marvel has been interested in for the last 20 years anyway). Regardless of the reasons WHY those characters are what they are, the fact is, Peter Parker is a straight, white male. So is Tony Stark. So is Steve Rogers. So is (technically speaking) Thor. The Asgardians Lee (a Jew) originally wrote about all those years ago, are NORSE gods, hence them looking NORSE. Just the same as you would write a comic about Egyptian gods being Egyptian, or Japanese gods being Japanese. To create more "diversity" in comics, NEW characters need to be created. And to some minor extent, they've done that. That's doing it the RIGHT way. But what a lot of fans DON'T like, is their beloved favorites being outright removed or killed off, and replaced by these new faces. It feels like what it is: forced, disingenuous, and artistically hollow. It's great if you want to have more female, or ethnic "minority" or LGBT characters in media. But MAKE new ones, interesting ones, the organic and honest way. Don't just MAKE old established characters warp and change to fit that kind of mold, so that some kind of forced quota can be claimed to be reached, and a false and dishonest sense of "diversity representation" can be achieved.  I've said it before, and I'll continue to say it pretty much forever: The moment that the agenda you're pushing through storytelling art, becomes the POINT of the art, where you're more interested in getting up on a soapbox and lecturing people, instead of telling a good story, it ceases to BE art.
