We hear a lot (particularly in "Look at the Princess" and The Peacekeeper Wars) about Leviathans being nonviolent, but are they, really? I can think of 3 full Leviathans who take any depicted action of their own will, and they all, at some point, resort to violence.
In "They've Got a Secret," Moya herself tries to suffocate every member of the crew-- even Pilot!-- rather than let them find out about her pregnancy. When they discover it anyway, Crichton has to deliver a whole speech about their good intentions before she turns back on their air.
In "Dog With Two Bones," Moya asks the crew to kill another Leviathan, a violent anti-PK fanatic determined to stop her from burying Talyn in a sacred cemetery. A couple of points: 1) Moya could avoid the killing by burying Talyn elsewhere and 2) The other Leviathan is a violent anti-PK fanatic.
Moya supports violence at least once more after this, when she builds Crichton's wormhole weapon (The Peacekeeper Wars). Essentially, she helps him threaten to destroy the whole galaxy if the PKs and Scarrans don't stop fighting each other.
In "What Was Lost, Part II," Elak performs a kamikaze assault on the Peacekeepers holding her new friends captive on Arnessk. Yes has sympathetic reasons for doing it, and probably saves several lives-- but he also probably takes several lives in the process. This brings us to three violent Leviathans out of three Leviathans in the whole series + miniseries-- and that's if you don't count half-Leviathan Talyn's fights.
Now, my point isn't that all of these violent choices are wrong. Maybe Leviathans need to stand up for themselves, and maybe Moya and Elak protect more people than they kill, and maybe we'd snap too, if we had to deal with control collars and toubray harvesters and hungry money. Can violence be justified? Yes. Can it be nonviolent? By definition, no.
This makes the characters' perceptions of Leviathans as "gentle beasts" and "peaceful to a fault" a little puzzling to me. True, they don't come furnished with weapons, nor is their a Leviathan government to lead them into battle. These factors limit both their opportunities and their motives.
But these are circumstances, not personality traits. Given opportunity and motive, they tend to react about like humans, Sebaceans, or Delvians: Sometimes they show mercy; sometimes they run away in fear; and sometimes, particularly when stressed, they blow something up.
