(this is spacekrakens lmao) dude idk anything about like 1950s Japanese cinema, do you have any recommendations? looking for stuff to toss on the watchlist now that I'm a bit burned out on horror (unless you have some horror recs)

Hey! If you’re curious about Japanese cinema (particularly 1950s), there’s a lot of avenues to explore! Musicals, crime, horror, historical—it all depends on what mood you’re in. (Putting this under a read more because I'm DEFINITELY going to be long posting about this!!!) Hope this is useful to you lol.

(Also noting if anybody wants to add to this list with their own recommendations feel free!!)

With old school Japanese cinema, I’ll always recommend Akira Kurosawa (obviously). He’s made some of the best Japanese movies (and arguably, the best movies of all time imo) and I feel like his work is a good gateway. It’s readily available on physical media/streaming too.

Specifically ‘50s stuff; Hidden Fortress (1958) is a good adventure flick whose structure was swiped for Star Wars, Throne of Blood (1957) is Japanese Macbeth if you like Shakespeare, and if you don’t mind a longer movie Seven Samurai (1954) includes Toshiro Mifune acting like this;

Gotta admit, though—my personal favorites from Kurosawa don’t come from the 1950s; Drunken Angel (1948) and Yojimbo (1961). One has a pathetic gangster as the main lead, the other is just a solid, breezy proto-action film (also has my beloved Unosuke but that's besides the point)

Some personal favorites of mine from the 1950s:

Life of a Horse Trader (1951) is a bittersweet story about a man trying to be a good single father to his son in the backdrop of Hokkaido. He tends not to be great at it. Stars Toshiro Mifune, the most famous face of Japanese cinema and for good reason!

Conflagration/Enjo (1958) is a single Buddhist acolyte’s fall into quiet insanity. Raizo Ichikawa is another amazing actor who I love! Also includes Tatsuya Nakadai who is the GOAT (in my heart).

Godzilla (1954) is AMAZING! If you liked Gozilla Minus One, it took a lot of familiar cues from this movie. It also technically counts as horror, depending on your definition.

Japanese horror from the 1950s:

Ugetsu (1951) (Not one I’ve seen personally, but it’s on Criterion)

The Beast Shall Die (1958) (American Psycho, but in Showa Japan. Tatsuya Nakadai is terrifying in this and absolutely despicable—stylish movie tho!)

Ghost of Yotsuya (1959) (Old-school Japanese ghost story. Honestly, there are so many different versions of this story on film that you can pick which version to watch and go from there—I’m partial to the 1965 version myself, because of the rubber rats and Tatsuya Nakadai playing a crazy person).

The Lady Vampire (1959) is the OG western-style vampire movie from Japan. Plays around with the mythos a lot, but hey our Dracula looks like this;

Misc movies that I think are neat or good gateway movies:

The Samurai Trilogy by Hiroshi Inagaki, which stars Toshiro Mifune as Miyamoto Musashi. Found that people otherwise uninterested in Japanese cinema really enjoyed this!

You Can Succeed, Too (1964) is one of my favorites from the ‘60s, also directed by Eizō Sugawa. A fun satire on the corporate world that's super colorful with catchy songs.

The Sword of Doom (1966) is also another favorite of mine, starring my beloved Tatsuya Nakadai as another bastard man (seriously though Ryunosuke is FASCINATING to me--). Fun gore effects and action scenes!

Kwaidan (1964) is an anthology of Japanese folk tales, labeled a horror film but in that kinda sorta old-school way. Beautifully shot by my favorite Japanese director Masaki Kobayashi (who, if you like this you should seriously check out his other work!)

@aikoiya I'm continuing our conversation here because I did in fact write an essay.

Okay so first of all: [throws youtube links at you] <- those clips are from a movie adaptation of the beloved classic, "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Get your hands on a copy of the book and read it, please. It is phenomenal and not very long.

The image I shared of the Little Prince is from a re-imagined version of the character, from a comic book series (based on a tv series, which the image is from) of the same name that I stumbled upon about a decade ago and fell in love with. More about him later.

Now. I have a theory about Toby that is very similar to yours, but a lot more straightforward: when the accident happened, his soul bound itself to the blue core (as in, the physical object, not the energy it produced) in much the same way that souls in Bleach will sometimes bind themselves to locations / objects / etc upon death. The blue core energy is what kept his soul from decaying or turning into a Hollow.

I like to think of blue core energy as a combination of, or dual-purpose, electric and soul energy. So Astro really is Toby, just with a rebuilt body, and no chance of turning into a Hollow because the blue core energy stabilizes him. Of course, he would be completely unaware of this until Toshiro points it out to him.

Speaking of, let me go back to the Little Prince. The way I want to portray him in this crossover idea is somewhat of a combination of how he is in the original book and how he is in the comic series. Or, more precisely, I like the idea that the comics simply depict how the Little Prince is when he's a bit older than he was in the book. There's a lot more besides his age that changes between the book and the comics, but the end of the book leaves the possibility for so drastic a change wide open, and the comic all but treats the book as a prequel, so I'm going to use that.

In the comics, the Little Prince has some special abilities, but mostly he still has the eyes and wonder of a child. He is very benevolent (nearly to a fault!) and feels things very strongly, but only rarely loses himself to fits of temper or despair. Mostly he is joyful and very keen, kind, and curious. He can talk to all living things and summon things from his imagination (within certain limitations).

Outside of all that, he and Toshiro have so much in common that I have a very hard time imagining them not being immediate close friends, even with Toshiro's ultra-reserved demeanor and trauma around the matter (yes I'm sort-of including Diamond Dust Rebellion stuff in this). Toshiro has been shown to be a very deep thinker and feeler, and is still very much a child, but he's learned to act (in the vernacular of the Little Prince) like a grown-up because he's surrounded by them. They might clash a little on that point, but beyond that they have so much in common that I think there would be an immediate connection between the two:

both have someone they are fiercely loyal to, around whom their whole heart revolves, and losing them would destroy their entire world

they both love watching sunsets and do so religiously, in both cases because it reminds them of the respective objects of their devotion

they both work with someone with a personality polar opposite to theirs, but with whom they share a strong bond of friendship anyway

they share a disdain (milder in Toshiro's case) for grown-ups

they both have deep, poetic, philosophical thoughts that they may (Little Prince) or may not (Toshiro) share with others

On top of all that, I can easily see the Little Prince's innocence and borderline naivety reminding Toshiro of Momo, and inversely, Toshiro's grumpiness reminding the Little Prince of his dear friend, Fox. So Toshiro's cold demeanor would do absolutely nothing to deter the Little Prince's friendship, and the Little Prince's warmth and trusting heart would activate Toshiro's powerful, "you are precious, you are kind to me, must protec at all costs" complex.

Back to Astro. In a lot of ways he would serve as the emotional Kirk to Toshiro's Spock and the Little Prince's McCoy. He's kind and warm, but knows when fisticuffs make the best argument. He's slower to violence than Toshiro but quicker to violence than the Little Prince. He knows what it's like to feel isolated and "other" and to stand out for his genius, like Toshiro, and he expresses his care for others with gentleness and vulnerability, like the Little Prince does. He'd be the perfect emotional balance between the two, and would round out the group's abilities very nicely.

There are also two big things that they all have in common. One I won't go into because Little Prince spoilers, but the other is that they all, at one point or another, have refused to fight in a situation that demanded them to. The Little Prince avoids violence as a rule (depending on the opponent), so such situations are almost a typical Tuesday for him, but Toshiro and Astro have each been pitted against a friend that—depending on how you interpret things—they each kinda shared a piece of their soul with. In Astro's case, it ended well. In Toshiro's... it didn't. It very didn't.

I know that I don't want their first encounter with each other to be violent, but I've tossed around so many ideas about how they meet and nothing so far is really sticking. Do they meet in one of their worlds? A separate world from any of theirs? So far the only thing that's kinda sticking is them meeting in the Bleach-verse, with the Little Prince showing up near Toshiro's house & running into him on a day off, meanwhile Astro shows up in the living world, but idk. I kinda had this idea of them traveling to different fictional worlds together to kinda help out and set things straight, but I don't even know if I want to keep that or not. All I know is they must be friends.

so anyway they are all bean and I will share more ideas later but it's late and I need to go to bed but yeah thanks for letting me ramble k bye

for the most part i make it a point to not watch stuff i know I won’t like even if it has an actor i like in it. but sometimes the description of a movie is ‘two girls break up and one of then has a fling with a nasty little man, gets pregnant, and then gets back together with her og girl, and then has to deal with the pregnancy with her’ and you go oh that sounds good! and then you watch it and it is somehow the most homophobic piece of media about a lesbian and a bisexual you’ve ever seen in your life. and david tennant is there. and it literally does not help. makes it worse, in fact. it’s called you me and him. at one point he jacks off with fake suntan lotion and turns his dick orange 🍊

--what comes after death

For many, nightmares never start off as nightmares – but rather as simple dreams. Yet, just with a horror movie, the suspense grows, the dream begins to take a darker turn. In the movies, it’s a jump scare or perhaps a terrifying reveal that expose the true nature of the film.

She had started having them again – nightmares. But they weren’t the ones that plagued her after Gin’s death. Those had subsided, never truly going away but they came less frequently – perhaps a sign that she was slowly, but surely coming to terms with his death. No, these nightmares were different, they weren’t replaying the same traumatic memory repeatedly. They were the creation of her subconscious.

It always starts the same. The room slowly comes into focus, the captain’s meeting hall in the First division. From her vantage point she can see all the taichous and fukutaichous at attention – it’s the middle of a meeting. This is routine, this is normal. Slowly though, the tide of the room changes, a subtle shift – darkness descends but not over the entirety of the room, just in certain spots. She first witnesses it to her right, Muguruma-taichou’s posture isn’t as ridged as she’s come to expect it. His shoulders hang disjointedly, his head lulls forward. Yet, Shuuhei and Mashiro don’t seem concerned, they continue to stare forward as though nothing is wrong.

The next is Otoribashi-taichou, she notices him sway, his posture and body like that of Muguruma-taichou. She doesn’t watch for too long, before it seems the light above her seems to have gone out, a shadow descends over her. Her gaze snaps to her taichou in front of her, he watches his head lull forward, shoulders slump. She attempts to reach out to him but that’s when she notices she’s trembling. The tips of her fingers have taken on a strange hue, grayish – like that of rotten flesh – before she knows it, it is her whole hand, and arm. Her vision blurs but she can see her taichou has turned, Muguruma-taichou and Otoribashi-taichou as well. Their cold, dead eyes staring at her. Their skin gray, their mind and bodies no longer theirs – a girlish laugh ripples through the room.  A petite figure looms in the shadow of the room. She laughs again, and she can find her mind slipping – her body is no longer hers to control.

Not this.

                                        Not again.

                                                                                            It haunts her.

Her nightmare forces her to see herself as to what she had become. Her cold, dead, blue eyes stare back at her, body turned, controlled.

      Beyond dead.

                                                                            A fate worse than death.

                                           Once more – a puppet.

She always awakes startled, shaking. She is quick to turn, snap on her bedside light, banishing the darkness that paints her skin in a shadowy gray, far too close in shade to her nightmarish form. She knows she won’t sleep the rest of the night, so she throws back the covers and walks to her bathroom. She hesitates to look up into the mirror, instead gripping the sides of the sink with dear life.

Dear life…

                                                                                         Precious life.

                              But how long did she have now?

She had stood there, listening to Kurotsuchi-taichou explain in excessive detail and length what he had done to reverse the zombification that had befallen them. Hearing in retrospect what had been done to them, what they had done while under control of another.

She could read nothing in the expressions of the three taichous who stood with her – but her blood was running cold – Muguruma-taichou and Otoribashi-taichou’s experience was slightly different than hers and Toshiro’s, she was told. She thought that had been it – a long winded retelling, focusing more on the genius behind the task than that of the actual process – ‘you lot won’t understand the science behind it anyways’ had been his condensing remark – until Kurotsuchi-taichou had sneered and asked the two of them if they understood the cost of the procedure.

Of course, they had paid a price.

                                              Freedom – had only cost them part of their lives.

A shinigami’s life was never guaranteed, they could live for a couple centuries – or a millennium or somewhere in between. She had lived over a century and a half but Toshiro – her gaze fell instantly to her taichou. His gaze was cold, stoic – he didn’t seem rocked that his life would come to an end sooner than anticipated. But she felt the pit in her stomach drop.

‘How long?’ Toshiro questioned, voice steady – strong, unphased.

              ‘I don’t know. If you allow for further tests…’

‘We aren’t going to be your test subjects, Kurotsuchi. Matsumoto, we’re leaving.’

She had managed to hold onto her dignity, managed to not make a scene – she’d need time to truly come to terms with that she had just learned. Though, it was like her taichou had read her thoughts – he had always been able to do that – for as they stood silently in their office, neither one able to meet the other’s gaze, an ominous cloud having descended over them, he spoke with the maturity of years not yet lived.

‘Don’t listen to him, Matsumoto, we have plenty of time left to live.’

                                                                            ‘Of course, taichou.’

She had appreciated his optimism – even if she felt it might have been forced for her sake. Or maybe he was feeling the dread of the revelation.

If only optimism could have prevented the nightmares from coming. They had started that night and happened nearly every night since.

At long last her steely blue gaze lifted to stare at her reflection in the mirror – other than the subtle bags under her eyes, she saw no change. No rapid deterioration of her youth before her eyes, no corrupted gray flesh of her nightmares, no cold, dead gaze staring back at her.

How long did she have?

                                How many years did it cost her?

                                                                                                How long?                

As if in autopilot – because this was the third month of these nightly terrors – the sound of running water cut through the spiraling thoughts. Wringing out the washcloth before gently pressing it to her eyes, she let the coolness of the water sooth her. She can feel and hear her pulse slowly coming down from the adrenaline induced high. Her breathing growing steadier with every inhale and exhale.

It may have been five minutes it could have been an hour, but at length she let the washcloth drop into the basin of the sink. She didn’t bother looking at her reflection as she exited her bathroom, flicking off the light on the way out. She doubted she’d get much sleep, but she returned to her bed, the sheets cold once more. Reaching over, she flicked off the bedside lamp, laying in the silent darkness. Enough time had passed where the scenes of the nightmare no longer appeared her in the eerie gloom of the night. She may be haunted by them during slumber but at least she wouldn’t be plagued by them during her waking hours.

Slowly, her hand rose, crossing her chest to trace the faint scars on her shoulder and collar bone. How much easier was it to carry the physical scars than the mental ones. Fingertips traced the scars, back and forth, till her lids struggled to remain open.

She had survived.

                          Not once.                           But twice.

                                                                                             She was alive.

                      At the very least.                                            For now.

 For however long she had.

                                                            She’d continue to live.

1. The best laid plans

Ichigo hummed to himself as he finished cleaning up the one story house he and Reniji had recently gotten. After getting married the pair had decided to move to the soul society full time, a move that was helped by the fact that Ichigo's bratty ways had recently gotten worse and there was only so many time one could expect to get away with hanging annoying kids by the back of their undies from trees before the law would have to get involved. Still they had a nice place, and Reniji while not at the best possible job, was raking in enough cash for them to live comfortably, all things considered it could of been worse. It also gave the happy pair time to indulge in a shared kink: diaper and age play. Make no mistake, while Ichigo whined and pointed out over and over again just HOW cute Reniji would look in diapers, the red head maintained that Ichigo was the baby of the house. Plus while Ichigo was a good little boy wife (Reniji's pet name for the chore bitch) he didn't wanna shatter his image of alpha male in the house hold by having Ichigo clean his poopie cheeks. It was Friday night and Reniji for a change didn't have to work in the morning and had texted Ichigo as the chore boy finished up what he wanted to do. Ichigo had a impish grin on his face as he texted back, having already decided mentally it was gonna be a daddy and me night, but told Reniji that he just wanted to relax and watch movies, and asked him to get some and some take out on his way home for work. Knowing it wouldn't take his 'daddy' too long to pick some movies and get some food (Fast food really WAS fast food in the soul society, anther point in it's favor) Ichigo made his way to the bathroom closet and dug out his enema kit.

Daddy was a firm believer that while he didn't always enjoy the smell, all big babies like his cutie pie Ichigo should be more then willing to make LOTS of 'presents' for their daddies. Ironically when they had first started all of this, it had been Ichigo who was less then a fan of poopie diapers and enemas. These days however, filling himself up and fighting to hold it in before soiling himself like a big dumb baby was so orgasmic there was 50/50 chance the big baby would cream the front of his diapers while loading the back. The tricky part in all of this was that Reniji thought plastic diapers were wasteful, and so Ichigo would have to somehow get his diapers pinned on and plastic pants tugged over them without letting out the water and sludge from his butt once he took the plug out. of course, only daddy thought that was still a hard struggle, but Ichigo had taken up some 'training' so to speak and while it wasn't always a sure fire thing, he had a high success rate. and had dealt with the clean up involved with his failures. It might of helped if it wasn't for the fact that Ichigo insisted on filling the bag to the brim, and oils and soaps to ensure all sorts of delightful cramps. Still it was a labor of love and he didn't think twice as he mixed his little brew up and shook the bag, before hanging it on the shower rod.

He had of course, already stripped naked, his hairless body a result of shaving and grooming and his modest manhood was twitching and awaiting the fun as he lubed up the suggestively shaped nozzle with one hand while working in a lubed up finger or two in and out of his rosebud to make this go as smooth as possible. Mindful that there WAS a time limit here, he forced the nozzle in hard and fast and almost lost it right there, hunched over the bathroom sink and letting out a soft "Oh daddy!" Somehow he managed to keep his load in and gasping softly he opened the valve on the bag, filling his insides with the hot mixture and whimpering as he rubbed his growing belly. "oh fuck..oh fuck..I'm getting pregnant with a mud baby just fer daddy Reniji." Ichigo coo'ed stupidly at his reflection, his eyes going dim as his hornless took him over. The bag filled him quick enough and Ichigo giggled, rubbing his belly a few times and savoring the cramps with his eyes closed, before moving onto the next stage of operation: present for daddy.

The terrycloth diapers Reniji got Ichigo were slightly stained, there were some things that all the elbow grease in the world just couldn't get out and Reniji insisted that Ichigo wasn't getting new diapers till the old one's were too worn out to use/too filthy to keep using. 'hehehehe two birds one stone!' the big baby giggled, having gotten them and the large diaper pins ready before stuffing his guts. pre powdered and everything, Ichigo tugged the nozzle out and willed his hole to close as he plopped back onto the diapers, tugging them up and getting the pins in. Ideally he'd like to say this present for daddy to see happen, but his tummy was cramping and gurgling, so Ichigo would have to take what he could get. Moaning softly and his tummy sloshing, Ichigo went for the cherry on the cake so to speak, tugging up a pair of plastic pants he'd claimed to have lost but had been working on in secret. working to stitch onto the back of the clear pants in jet black 'poo poo pants'. 'Daddies gonna squeal when he see's dat!' Ichigo thought proudly. he toyed with getting a diaper shirt on, but between the size of his tummy and the diaper butt, he'd of had to struggle and it would of popped open when he bent over anyways. He could of slid a top on at least but figured fuck it, lots of babies ran around in just their diapers and it wouldn't be like Reniji wasn't gonna be washing him soon anyways. decision made, Ichigo toddled towards the hallway in from of the front door and turned around,bracing himself on a small table for key's and the like and waited, his butt facing the door and listening for the sound of daddies keys.

Reniji was having a good day, and actually was looking forward to a nice lazy night. he didn't wanna tell Ichigo and break the little cuties heart, but he semi needed a break from wiping the big babies butt. truthfully he would of maybe liked to go out for drinks, but had just picked up a bottle of sake along with some stir fry and picked out a action comedy. He'd also run into two of their old friends, Toshiro and Kenpachi (though with Kenpachi, friend might of been pushing it..) and they had semi invited themself over for a few drinks. 'I'm sure Ichigo won't mind company for a little bit.' Reniji thought, listing to the other two captain's argue over who drink more behind. "Guys, for the record, Unless you wanna go and get your own bottles, take it easy." Reniji called playfully over his shoulder, then slid the key's into the lock. they might of lived in a ok neighborhood but Reniji still didn't want someone just waltzing in.

Hearing the key's in the lock Ichigo gave a Cheshire grin and mentally giggled, while in a soft voice went "it's showtime~" and relaxed his control, letting out a massive wet fart and then more.. as he heard Reniji start to speak up."Hi sweetie I'm home! hope you don't mind but I ran into some friends...of..ours.." Reniji said before his voiced dropped off, and he facepalmed. Looking over his shoulder, and helpless to stop the torment of sludge that was escaping out of his bottom, Ichigo saw Toshiro looking at him amused till the smell hit him, then the platinum blond was holding his nose and waving a hand, and Kenpachi who just broke out into loud laughter. Blushing big time time and shaking, Ichigo gave a weak little wave and a soft "Oh..uh...Hiiii..." "nice huggies poo poo pants!" Toshiro grumbled, still holding his nose and Kenpachi just laughed harder. "-sigh-.. can you guys give me a few, apparently I have to put the baby down to bed..or at least change him." Reniji said, going from annoyed to smirking. "DADDY!"

2. Anger leads to bad choices

Ichigo hummed softly, he was once again cleaning the house, and it had a been a few week's since the disaster that had been the so called lazy night. Toshiro and Kenpachi had agreed to keep it to themselves, but mostly because who would believe them? Reniji had been a little bit less then pleased with Ichigo for fibbing, but Ichigo had gotten away with just having to go to bed in the spare room (AKA his nursery) without a diaper change and listen to the adults have fun. Still some babies never learn their lesson, so while Ichigo was shaking his hips and singing a few of his favorite pop songs from the human world, he was wearing thinner set of diapers and plastic pant's, that puffed out the back of his diaper shirt and poked out the leg holes. it was a pale blue diaper shirt with a big yellow star on the front, though the star was currently hidden by the black apron Ichigo was wearing while he dusted. the apron was a basic black and held extra wipes and a spare duster, as well as the music player that the big baby was listening to as he rocked that jam. He was currently in the living room, and had opened the curtains to let some sunlight in under the impression that the kids on the block were still away at some semi form of a summer camp, a assumption that would prove to be VERY wrong.

It was Kul who first noticed the sight of the big baby dancing in plain sight, and he'd crept across the lawn of Mean mister Ichigo, who was prone to yell at kids to stay off the awn and give them wedgies if they didn't listen. the reason why he kept kids away became clear as the close Kul got, the clearer it was the block grump was a silly big baby. Kul was small for his age and had a shaved head, but despite his tiny size he was somewhat known as the block tough guy and a semi hero to bullying victims. so naturally, seeing the biggest bully of them al was just a big dumb baby, he couldn't keep it to himself and waved over anther boy, Toji. "What is it?" Toji asked, raising a eyebrow as Kul put a finger to his lips. "And are you crazy? this is grumpy pants yard!" Toji added, lowering his voice to a hiss. Kul just grinned and pointed at the window, and Toji paused and then broke into a grin. "No friggen way.." "Go spread the word." Ku said.

Ichigo somehow missed the gathering of fan's outside the window, at least till he was wrapping up the final song on his play list and was paying the duster like it was a guitar. As the music faded and he dropped down to one knee, he opened his eyes wide as the sound of laughter and clapping filled his ears. Looking back at him, pointing and laughing, were all the kids on the block, and more, as apparently news of his little show had gotten out. they were pointing and laughing and chants for a encore broke out. His face turning Crimson Ichigo went to jump up but the padding had gotten damp from a combination of a wetting or two and the sweat he had worked up and instead he stumbled and plopped on his puffy butt instead. Naturally this only made the kids laugh harder, and some of them were taking pictures now as tears started to fill the big babies eyes. "Stop it! stop it!" Ichigo whined and pounded his fists on the floor, trying to glare at them and scare them away. Instead they giggled and d'awwed, and he heard at east one kid comment the big baby was having a tantrum. "I'll show you a tantrum!" Ichigo growled, and rolling onto his hands and knees, he crawled over quick towards the couch and used it to get to his feet, as the hoot's of laughter turned into sounds of worry. "I'm coming out then and giving you all wedgies so hard you'll be tasting your undies for a week! No! a MONTH!" he vowed, and on his way out the door shut the curtains. waddling out the door he never once paused to think about the fact he was STILL dressed like a big baby, or that he hadn't grabbed his keys when Reniji had installed automatic looking doors.

the kids had started to scatter as the front door flew open and Ichigo darted out onto the lawn, eyes filled with fury as he scanned the gathered crowd. "All right! who's fi-" he started, when he heard the sound of the door clicking shut. such had been the force when he'd opened it it had banged off of the wall and bounced back closed, and the loud click was the lock sliding into pace. "-st..Oh shit.." Ichigo whimpered. "pffft..did you just lock yourself out, diaper baby?" Kul asked, in a loud voice. "I..uh..Noo! I just.." Ichigo whined. "Well, if you're NOT stuck out here in your thick diapie wipies, go back inside baby man." Toji called. the other kids gained back their nerve as Ichigo's  anger was replaced with a trembling bottom lip, and he turned back, waddling towards the door, and letting out a LOUD fart. "Ah geez, the BABY is gonna crap himself..Now I DO hope he can get back inside!" a little girl called out. "S-Shut up! no I'm not!" Ichigo whined, even as anther fart erupted out of his backside. He tugged at the door handle once, twice and then a third time and sniffled, as the laughter grew. "awww poor baby Ichigo locked him poor widdle self out! he'll have to wait till daddies home to wet him in~" "Oh man,m he's gonna smell like a sewer by then!" "Yeah, sorry BABY butt, but while i have a little brother, your butt's WAY to big for his diapers!" as the taunts came faster and faster, Ichigo felt tears sliding down his cheeks and sludge flood into the back of his diapers. "STOP BEING SO MEAN TO WIDDLE ME!" he bawled, sinking to his knees and bawling for daddy. "..ah geez.. ok guys I think he's had enough.." kul said, coming over and holding a nose, but patting the big babies head. "there there, your big brothers and sisters will look after you." Kul said with a smile. Ichigo, just whimpered and sucked his thumb and the crotch snap of his diaper shirt popped opened.

The last thing Reniji expected to see as he came into view of his house was Ichigo of all people, surrounded by kids from around the block and clapping his hands and giggling happily. He was naked save for what looked like a rubber sheet that have been mangled into a somewhat passable diaper and his eyes were basically bank as he coo'ed and giggled, calling the kids around him big brother and big sister. '..this is going to be a interesting story.' Reniji thought, and strolled up.

So Spyro, Cynder, and the new Fire Guardian to travel into the Unknown Realms and defect the queen of Nega Deadlock. It's good adventure story with twist and turns. I know in the in summary it looks like Paige has a villain redemption but Paige isn't a villain. She more someone who made a mistake. A mistake she needs to own up too but an mistake non the less. Which I like. While I do like villain redemption stories most of the time they are not well thought out. Even on 'professor' writer can't really write good. So this is better then what we be getting.

So the Dark Legacy fic is next gen about a albino dragon, named Lyrith who goes to Temple Academy where dragons learn about fight, the world around them, etc. The problem is that as albino Lyrith has no power and while accepting some of the people around are dislike for being an albino. Lyrith is not the only chatacter that has an arc in this story and ocs cast is pretty good in my option. It also has good world-building without going away from the main story. Rashomon: An appreciation of the language of Japanese Cinema

Warning: Spoilers!

A long time ago, during those first flourishes of cinephilia that would consume my life, I made it my duty to watch as much as I could. I wanted to experience movies from all parts of the world, all corners of the earth as it were.

The first flourishes of this obsession with the movies were fed and watered by America, specifically Hollywood, but soon films from elsewhere would make themselves known to me and my pallet expanded. I discovered the various new waves that seemed to pop up occasionally and all those new and exotic names that now seem as familiar to me as, well, as family. Names like Rossilini, Truffaut, Godard, De Sica or Almodóvar. These were names that have continued to pop up over and over again as my appreciation continued to grow.

But there were two names which seemed, to my small-minded, limited experienced imagination, more strange and peculiar than all the others – Yasujiro Ozu and Akira Kurosawa. Maybe it was because many of the other behemoths of cinema came from the relative proximity of France, Italy and Spain; European cousins who were both unusual in language yet possessed a sameness which was easy to identify with, whereas Japan was thousands of miles away with a very singular culture and history. Or, and this is I think more likely, it was because they just made brilliant movies.

I have written of my love for the small number of Ozu movies I have so far managed to track down here, a love that was first kindled with the sublime Tokyo Story. Both he and Kurosawa examine the minutiae of Japanese culture that was both peculiar and universal. I think that this was because the themes, whilst specific in their use of Japanese cultural norms, were also understandable to the outside world as well. We might not understand the significance of the tatami shot used so frequently by Ozu in Tokyo Story (and all his other films) but we do understand the emotions that the film explorer – disappointment, grief, loss, etc.

The same can be said of Kurosawa. A samurai may look particularly strange to western eyes, the histrionics of the great Toshiro Mifune may bring a smile to your face when you first see them, but you can't help but be moved by the plight of the villagers in The Seven Samurai (reviewed here)or the hopelessness of those trapped between the two warring factions in Yojimbo.

One of those films I saw during this blossoming of my filmic adulthood was Kurosawa's (and Japan's) first real international success – Rashomon. It has been a long time but thankfully, today, I revisited this 1950 masterpiece.

If there is one film that proves the point that I have been trying to make, it is this. Rashomon is the story of a murder, or more specifically, the stories of a murder as the details of what happened change ever so slightly with each telling.

The story is told by a Woodcutter (the wonderful Takashi Shimura), a Priest, a Wife, a Bandit and even the victim himself, who speaks through a medium. The facts are these, a man and his wife are travelling through a forest and are spotted by Tajomaru, a bandit well known in the area. At the end of the encounter the man is dead. Beyond that the truth becomes diluted behind a veil of lies and deceit.

Afterwards the Woodcutter and the Priest take shelter from a storm beneath the ruins of the Rashomon Gate and are encouraged to tell their stories to a passerby who shelters with them.

First they tell their own stories – the Woodcutter found the bodies and the Priest was the last person to see them alive – then they recount the versions as told by the other characters involved. Tajomaru claims he was the killer, the wife suggests that it may have been her and the ghost of the dead man claims he took his own life. These are not people lying to save their own lives as they all claim to be the murderer themselves, they are lying to hide a bigger, more fundamental and important truth. This is what drives the film and is slowly revealed through the astute questioning of the passerby.

I am not sure if I have the vocabulary to explain each person's individual's motives and do them justice but I will try. The priest is troubled by the possibility that man may harbour a deep rooted sin which he finds difficult to understand; The Woodcutter wants to stay out of trouble (the only way, for a westerner, to possibly fully appreciate the situation he finds himself and the dilemma he faces in is to watch other Kurosawa's films, especially Seven Samurai which explores the desperation poor villagers live with. Of course, for a Japanese audience this would not be an issue.)

The bandit's lust is perhaps the most understandable although his later decisions regarding the woman are far more subtle as is the husband's rejection of her. Finally, as we don't have any back story for the man or woman, it is difficult to understand her flipping between the man she is married to and an uncouth stranger they meet on the journey.

But this where the understanding of Japanese culture derived from watching and rewatching the films of these wonderful filmmakers bears fruit and the real theme of the film becomes clear – Honour.

Each retelling by one of the three principals involved in the murder acts as a way of preserving the honour of the teller: the wife doesn't want anyone to know of her shame at rejecting her husband in favour of the bandit, the husband doesn't want to live with the fact that his wife would reject him like that and so seppuku (suicide) is the more honourable outcome. As for the bandit, he knows that he will be paying the ultimate price for the death and doesn't want anyone to believe he could be manipulated like he was.

Of course, the truth does come out, the woodcutter saw everything but did not want to tell and because of this the priest rejects him. To the priest the woodcutter briefly represents all the lies and deceit that he has been witness to that day, but as they hear the cries of an abandoned baby, the Woodcutters unselfish attitude wins him over, restoring a little faith in humanity one more time.

Watching the films of Kurosawa one can't help by notice the over exaggerated performances: words are spat out, the characters continuously throw themselves to the ground, the fights last a long time until the characters are completely out of breath and reduced to wild lunges with their swords, the medium trashes about, speaking with the dead man's voice, when slighted characters seem to run a great distance away from the others to mope in solitude. But a Kurosawa Samurai film is not about reality, they are not depictions of real life, they have much grander themes than this.

It is also important to note that the judge to whom the parties tell their stories is off camera and silent. The protagonists speak directly to the camera so it is as if we, the viewer, is the judge. The fourth wall is almost compromised making us complicit with the actions onscreen.

In many respects Kurosawa and Ozu represent two sides of the Japanese coin – Kurosawa's grand gestures compared to Ozu's focus on the tiniest details, but at the same time they speak to us the same way. They may seem alien to a western audience and their language may sound strange to our ears but their words are easily translatable into our own understandings and experiences. We know what they are saying even if we have to learn the language they are speaking. The best way to learn this language (by which I mean filmic language rather that dialect) is to watch the films of these greatest of filmmakers, to sit at the feet of these masters and consume every nuance like a dutiful student.

Whether it is in the movement of Kurosawa or the stillness of Ozu, this language is visual. Ozu began his career in silent films and Kurosawa proclaimed his appreciation for Silents on many occasions. So I implore cinephiles and would-be cinephiles wherever you are in the world to watch these films, to learn their language and I guarantee you will get a better understanding of the world, of cinema and of yourself.

LOVE every single one of your Western choices. Wrote a ficlet about Hour of the Gun (on AO3) and an ok fic about The Professionals (in a fanzine, not on AO3). Ben and Charlie is a little like Beyond the Law - silly plot, but so slashy (DAFT Italian title: Friend, stay away from me … a handspan at least).

The list of westerns came mainly from you, back in October or somewhere around there. (And I’ve been shamefully slow to watch them--I think The Big Gundown and The Magnificent Seven were also among those you mentioned, so at least I’ve now seen those!) “Friend, stay away from me … a handspan at least” -- wow, the Italian titles of everything are so great, lol. (A handspan is not very far away?!)

Other films: I would add Sanjuro to Yojimbo and The Hidden Fortress. If you like Shakespeare’s Macbeth, you will love Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood. Red Beard is quite slashy for Kurosawa, long but engaging. Not a samurai film (set in the 19th C), but Toshiro Mifune manages one scene of fight and mayhem.

I would also add The Defiant Ones to your Films of the Fifties and Seventies. Incredibly slashy, and very exciting.

Please, let’s discuss them as you watch them, especially the westerns.
