Title: FFXIV Write 2022 - 7. Pawn Characters: Y'shtola Rhul, Zoissette Vauban, Crystal Exarch Rating: Teen Summary: Y'shtola Rhul recognizes no authority in her life save her own Notes: I may turn many of these snippets into fuller stories later
Y'shtola held her wand in her hand in front of her, glaring across the distance to the Hyuran male who stood opposite of her. She was peripherally aware of her sister standing next to her, and looked over to spare her a reassuring smile. Little Y'mhitra, so young yet, did not look up at her, but instead glared at the same man, her hands balled at her sides into small fists, and Y'shtola allowed herself the faintest smile. She was proud of her.
Turning her attention back to the man, she spoke. "So you thought to come to my master's atelier to steal my research, and for - what, exactly? If 'twas only curiosity that compelled you, you need only have asked. And certainly, I can see no need for you to have involved my sister in whatever scheme you are dreaming."
The man clasped his hands behind his back and stood straight and tall, and when he spoke, Y'shtola could hear the haughtiness in his voice. "Your sister was a willing enough participant up until you chose to interfere. As for your research, yes, I must admit, I wished to see it and its effects for myself. If they were well, then good. And if not, well then," he said, and he ducked his chin down just a hair to smile at her, "then it may have been necessary to censure your master. For the good of Sharlayan, of course."
Y'shtola's frown deepened. "You meant to use my sister and myself as tools in your crude scheme," she said.
"But of course," the man responded. "What else are apprentices for? You are taught, and in return, you are expected to help your elders achieve their goals."
Y'shtola inclined her head and looked at the man cooly. She saw only one clear way out of this, but if he thought she would let him get away with what he was doing, well.
She began to channel aether to her wand. "I believe you shall find yourself gravely mistaken as to my willingness to play along with this charade of yours."
The man laughed, pulling his own wand free. "It will be much easier to convince the Forum of my innocence when there will be no witnesses remaining."
Y'shtola's ears went flat, and her spells flew free.

She had been investigating the Key of Seal Rock, a horn of unusual origins. She had been working alongside a most useful adventurer, and had even managed to make a few deals with the local pirates, and she thought for sure that she would be able to acquire the powerful artifact.
However, the pirate had other ideas, and though she had bested him, he was not the only one with designs on the horn.
Ascians.
"Power as this does not belong in the hands of your kind," the Ascian said, as the Seal Rock Key, the horn, floated towards him. He grasped it out of the air.
Y'shtola yelled, frustrated, her fists at her side, before she ran at him in a dead sprint, but before she could get to the man, he vanished into thin aether.
She snarled as he vanished. Behind her, she was aware of the adventurer that had been with her slowly coming up behind her, and putting a hand on her shoulder. She pulled away, irritated not at him, but at herself.
That she was used by the Ascians like this! It was galling, down to her very core.
She would not let it happen again, she swore.

"You had best get your woman under control," sneered the man, looking at the Elezen assessor-turned-adventurer that was helping with her investigation.
Y'shtola flattened her ears as she fixed the man with a glare. "I am no one's to control," she said.
Assessor Fauxbin barely had time to stiffen, and even before Y'shtola had made it to her second word, she could see in her peripheral vision that the woman had already taken one large step back.
"If you mislike my words, then that is your business. But if you think I am able to be silenced by you or anyone else, you will find you are sorely mistaken," and here Y'shtola could feel her expression managing to darken even further, "And I am not above making sure it is the final mistake you ever make."
Zoe had, by this time, regained her composure, and had quietly walked behind Y'shtola, coming to stand at her right side. She fixed the man with a stony expression, closing her assessor's book.
"I think we're done here," she said.
"We are," confirmed Y'shtola, spinning on her heel and walking out. She could hear Zoe following quickly behind her, and a quick glance showed the man sneering at the both of them before returning to his cups. Well. No matter. They would solve the problem of these missing persons, with or without his help. Y'shtola resolved to find answers elsewhere.

It seemed a lifetime ago that she had lost the horn, and now it had appeared in a most unexpected place.
She crossed her arms as she looked down into the deep valley of the Tipped Ewer, and the massive construct that existed in the bubble there.
Alexander.
When she had last seen the horn, it had been after a long investigation and research, in which she had worked alongside one of the Warriors of Light, ultimately having a pirate retrieve it for her, and then lost it to an Ascian.
History had a wicked sense of humor she found herself misliking.
The Ascian had turned from one pawn to another, and the result was the giant hulking primal taking up the better part of the waterways.
She heard the Warrior of Light come up behind her, and she felt a familiar ache. She resolved to ignore them, frowning to herself.
A sense of humor, indeed.

The Cabinet of Curiosity was a fine name for a fine institution. It was one of the few places thus far in this strange new realm that Y'shtola had taken a liking to, and it was here that she had spent her days, reading through tomes and learning about this world, so close to her own in many regards, but so distant in others.
She had collected several promising leads to follow up on, and was about to return her current book to its shelf and retire for the evening when she heard now familiar footsteps behind her. The sound of heavy living stone muffled by thin leather, and the almost crinkly-like rustling of robes that had a thin crystal lattice as part of their fabric.
The mysterious so-called Crystal Exarch had come to pay her a visit.
She resisted the urge to frown at him as she turned at his approach. He was a vexing man, and she misliked how he hid himself, but he had been unfailingly polite thus far, and had given her little reason to mistrust him.
He had also given her precious little reason to trust, and so she had chosen to keep her consul tight to her chest.
"Mistress Y'shtola," he said.
"Crystal Exarch," she replied.
"I had hoped to find you here, despite the late hour. I hope the evening finds you well?"
"Well enough," she said, "And that is about my patience for pleasantries, I believe."
Zoissette would be annoyed to know how much like her old master she was becoming, and she suppressed a sigh. Zoissette was not here, and she was, and so was this man, and she was found him vexing and was letting that get to her. She resolved to be better.
"What do you want?" she asked, forcing herself into a kinder tone.
"Ah. Well, you see, it concerns the matter of my teleportation work..."
"How many more of my comrades will you be pulling across the rift until your aim proves itself true? Perhaps you can conjure up Alphinaud or Alisaie this time. Bring forth enough of us, and all our work in the Source shall come to a standstill."
Well, maybe not much better or all that kinder.
The Crystal Exarch looked to the side. "Well, perhaps with your help, I can refine my technique, and spare them the trouble," he said evenly. Politely.
Always so politely.
Y'shtola looked at him for a long moment, and then held out her hand. "Very well. Show me your work."
The Crystal Exarch reached into his robes, and dug around for a long moment, before presenting Y'shtola with a tomestone. She took it from him and used her fingers to navigate its interface. Much of it was locked out, but the figures he claimed to want her interest in were available, and she looked them over, making small adjustments.
"It is a matter of energy and time, as we have oft spoke of before," she said evenly, now controlling her temper. "That the Warrior of Light has an impressive aether reserve is a matter of no little concern, but her Blessing should be enough to hold her together through the rift, assuming you can refine your spell enough to carry her free of the liminal barrier..."
Y'shtola trailed off as she found something new in the tomestone. She frowned, and looked at it. "...or in lieu of refinement, you could use the rather puissant amount of power apparently available to you."
The Crystal Exarch's hood bounced as he suddenly snapped his head to look at her, and he quickly took back his tomestone, his fingers dancing over it.
"Ah - my apologies. You were not meant to see that - it need not be part of your calculations. I am afraid that the power you see is not available to me, as such."
"If it is not available to you, then why do you mark it so?" asked Y'shtola, leaning back and crossing her arms.
The Crystal Exarch was still for a moment before he answered. "It will be necessary upon the Warrior of Light's arrival, in order that we might use its power to help save our realm."
"So you say. How, then, is it to do that?" she asked.
"I cannot say yet, at this juncture." he replied, his voice soft and quiet, and cold like a gentle winter drift.
"You ask for my help in one breath, and then deny me the answers I need to provide it in the next," said Y'shtola, feeling her temper rising, and for the first time with this man, deciding to feed it. "When first I arrived, you called yourself friend, and said that you needed the help of the Warrior of Light to spare your realm." She would not say the warrior's name to this man. He no longer deserved to hear it. "That your realm is in dire need of assistance is no mystery. That in sparing your realm we may very well save our own is no secret. But you are a mystery and position yourself as an enigma, held together with secrets. I know not your name nor your face, and you will not share your methods. How can I be certain that you wish us well, and not ill? You ask me to trust you, but will not trust me in turn.
"Tell me, Crystal Exarch. What exactly are you planning with my friend?" and she let the last come out as nearly a snarl.
The Crystal Exarch stood a little straighter, adjusting his grip on his staff as he did so. "Once we have brought the Warrior of Light unto the first, we shall avail ourselves of her blessing of Hydaelyn, that she may be used to defeat the Light Warde-"
"Yes, yes, as you have often said, and how practiced your speech is," said Y'shtola. "And the tower? What use of it? The apparently impressive amount of power at your disposal? And what of us? What use do you have of us, that you hold to us so dearly instead of trying to return even one of us, that we may draw upon our resources from home and speak with the Warrior of Light of your plan directly?"
"...I cannot answer many of those questions. However, for the one, if I release the spells on you or your compatriots, there is no guarantee it will return you home, and very well may set back my progress on learning to retrieve the Warrior of Light," said the Crystal Exarch. "And energy and time spent on undoing your conundrum will delay this realm's salvation even further. Please, you must understand, what I do, I do for both our realms."
"So you say," said Y'shtola. She turned away from him, then, and picked up her book. "Well. I have made my annotations to your work. Good evening," she said, and without waiting for a response, she went to return the book to its place among the shelves. Behind her, the Crystal Exarch remained silent.
Wise of him, for it was all she could do to not castigate him further.
She did not trust him, and she misliked feeling that she was being used as part of some greater plot that she had no insight into and little control over. As she returned the book to its spot, she resolved to herself that she would soon be leaving the hospitality of the Crystarium. She had gotten as many answers as she was like to from here, and if the Crystal Exarch was resolved, then so was she. She would find her own answers, her own way, from here on out.

Y'shtola glanced up from her book at Zoissette as they slid in to the chair across the table from her.
"Uhm..." she said, and Y'shtola closed her book gently and set it aside.
"I've a favour to ask," they said, and Y'shtola simply sat back and listened as the Warrior explained a plan they had been working on. It involved investigation, and no small amount of danger, and leaned heavily upon Y'shtola's skills. Y'shtola asked questions, and the warrior was only too forward with answers.
"I know it seems a bit like I'm taking advantage-" they began.
"Nonsense," replied Y'shtola, and she smiled at them warmly as she got up to go fetch her things. "It is a sound enough plan, and I rather trust your judgement."
"Oh, I kind of think you shouldn't," said Zoissette, grimacing.
"Then I shall trust you more than enough for the both of us," stated Y'shtola simply.
Zoissette's expression turned sheepish at that, and Y'shtola just rolled her eyes while shaking her head a bit with a smile.
After all, if Y'shtola didn't want to do it, then she wouldn't, and for her, it was that simple.

Van Gogh: …
Kuroda: When did you become such a monkey that you can't even understand my language?
Van Gogh: Woah!?
Kuroda: I see, so this is what you wrote. No no, that's terrible. If we display something like this, we won't get any visitors to our museum. Rather, it's at the level where you have to pay a fee.

Karina: Expects respect for her and her accomplishments and experiences. She prefers to be met at least halfway, and challenged in a way that doesn’t involve power over her/ a power imbalance.
This does differ between platonic and romantic entanglements; she expects far more understanding and a desire to improve oneself from a romantic interest, while friendship tends to involve a boundary/a little distance. Was a doormat; has learned from that experience and others and communicates (when she’s…not emotionally reeling), questions, etc. Her romantic partners can expect a lot of acts of service or handmade food or gifts, unwavering will and loyalty, and a willingness to empathize.
Rhiannon: Similar to her sister, she expects all around respect; she’s a little more demanding, however, and insecure enough to be prone to jealousy. Expects to be the sole focus of her partner’s attention (platonic or romantic); this is non-negotiable for a romantic partner. Her schedule and her art are unforgiving and she has no time to waste on those who have none for her. Her partners can expect someone who comforts, often through physical touch, and who cooks better than she bakes.

Karina: Swordsmanship, the differences between multiple fighting styles and various weaponry, as well as most topics relating to clothing ateliers and the industry as a whole. Will debate different topics related to the divine and visions for funsies because she’s still confused lol
Bored af: Political non-speak where people talk in circles and say nothing meaningful, anything involving traditional gender conformity, and anything that involves praise for the bare minimum.
Rhiannon: Political intrigue is what she lives and it’s actually what she enjoys; it adds new context for her purpose in the Fatui. Fashion and other related topics are fun in that she’s seen a lot come and go growing up in a popular atelier shop and she loves to correct people about trends and faux paus. Has a weak spot for composers and musicians who provide challenging works for singers and will talk any ear off about her favorites (hint: one of them is Dottore).
Bored af: Small talk. She’ll do it with a smile but you better hope she doesn’t subtly draw your breath from you to get you to stop if it becomes unnerving.
🌠 Who was your OC’s first friend? Do they remember them or are they still friends now? Talk about some of the people your OC has lost contact with over the years. Do they have any regrets about losing these people and would they revist them if they could?
Each other. They’re only a few years apart and they were their first friend, respectively. They’re not friends at present; Karina only recently discovered Rhiannon survived after all. Karina: has lost comrades that she will never be able to bring back, and regret is the only thing she can feel for that period of her life. She and Sebastien used to be friends > commander/officer > lovers. Karina only thinks about how foolish she was, how blind, and regrets the consequences but not the lessons. Rhiannon: she had other friends growing up but her life now, under a pseudonym, is far different. She misses her family, wishes things had been different, but no longer seeks comfort in others outside of the Fatui, finding life to be too fleeting.
🍐⭐ For Gabrielle
🍐 What is your OC’s mentality? Are they overall positive? Negative? A bit of both? Describe their thought patterns and reasoning behind their choice making!
She’s probably the most negative, aside from Karina in Spillways/The Heretic and the Forsaken. She’ll see the silver lining but her expectations are often negative after her forgery skills have been taken advantage of. She is rational about decisions pertaining to her well-being, surprisingly calm for the most part, but emotional about anything with her artwork, both in its creation and subsequent destruction.
⭐ What is your OC afraid of? Any crippling phobias or some such? How do they act when scared and what helps them calm down? Does anyone ever find your OC scary? Why?
No phobias but she does hate the smell of blood and the texture of roughly carved wood. Usually she’ll pull a perfumed handkerchief over her face until she can handle the blood; with the wood, she’ll barely touch it unless she has gloves on. She’s picky about the wood she uses for canvas stretchers.

💤 What was your OC like as a baby, a child and as a teen? (if your OC is a teen or a child, what will they be like as an adult?). How have they changed since then? What lessons have they learned and what things about their youth do they miss the most? Do they have any general regrets?
He wasn’t always an asshole but he is a noble and grew up entitled and spoiled. Most of the lessons he learned were more about emotional manipulation and how to get what he wants; he misses the hope and naivety of youth, when he thought he might receive a Vision. The power he never received must be obtained through other means. His regrets include Karina but not in the ways you might expect.
