this might be controversial, but man am i becoming increasingly convinced that buddie trutherism* is just not (and probably never has been) a very healthy way to engage with this show. *to be clear, by this i don't mean shipping buddie, or hoping it'll be canon, or thinking that it could be, i mean the completely unshakeable belief that it is absolutely going to happen (and to a lesser extent that it's always been the plan).

every single piece of evidence for buddie is evidence of a potential, often very compelling potential, but there is really nothing to suggest some big six season plan or any plan at all.

i'm sure a lot of these ppl (maybe even most) aren't bad, or doing anything out of malice. however, i do think having a large chunk of the fandom make post after post, week after week, season after season going "don't worry guys, buddie's definitely happening because of x, y or z," has helped create the current environment. where ppl have spent so long in a bubble where buddie's been presented as the only reasonable outcome, that they can't conceive of the idea they might've been wrong.

atp a lot of buddie meta isn't a queer reading of the show/relationship it's just straight up lies. no tommy isn't a miserable hater who never smiles at his bf, nor is he a predatory freak preying on sweet baby bi buck, and no eddie wasn't jealous at the wedding, no buck didn't realise he was in love with eddie when he came out to him. truly, after a decade in different fandoms, I don't think i've ever seen shipping goggles this bad.

again i don't think the ppl making meta/analysis about things that genuinely have some queer subtext to them are bad or doing anything wrong. but, when a narrative that you're contributing to is feeding into this much wider ecosystem that's influencing others to harass ppl and peddle homophobic dog whistles in an attempt to bridge the gap between their fanon and canon, at what point do you step back and go, "you know what, i don't think it's responsible for me to feed into this anymore."

and i worry that even the people who aren't hurting others with this kind of engagement, are gonna end up hurting themselves in the long run.

So I made the mistake of stumbling onto the NOT STEVE ROGERS FRIENDLY tag today and..

You have to be a special type of delusional to be this obsessed with a character you don't like!??

Over 2k fics have the tag and are almost entirely Tony Stark-centered fics. I'm assuming these are the "fans" who totally buy into the MCU canon and don't know any other Captain America lore outside of what Feige and Whedon have done. Or, they're the "fans" who refuse to understand the politics behind Steve's character and how he was inherently undermined throughout the entire ten years of the MCU by the directors and writers for most of the films.

Because the arguments in most of these fics for being "not Steve rogers friendly" are really surface level shit like:

1) "Steve refused to sign the Accords and broke up the Avengers" (he was right & he didn't break them up, an overemotional Tony did when he refused to listen to Bucky's side of the story).

2) Steve fought Tony and almost killed him (yeah, like Tony didn't blast Bucky's arm off and shoot his repulsor rays directly at Steve).

3)Steve is homophobic (y'all are just making up reasons to hate this man atp)

4)Steve is racist (Steve hated racists & you'd know that if you read the comics, or you guys are just that deluded that you're making Steve racist & trying to project it as canon and therefore a "reasonable" explanation as to why you hate him)

5)Blaming Steve for Rhodey's accident (WHICH WAS TEAM TONY'S FAULT!)

6)YALL, THEY MADE STEVE THE BAD GUY IN A BROCK RUMLOW/BUCKY FIC! I stg I cannot make this shit up💀 Steve's bad for wanting Bucky to be Bucky again, but somehow Brock's the good guy for wanting Bucky to be the Soldier...

There's a hundred more irrational reasons for the Steve Rogers hate, but let me get to the WORST part.

THERE ARE BUCKY STANS WHO ARE ANTI-STEVE ROGERS.

And I'm sorry, no. I don't accept that you love Bucky Barnes but hate the one person he loves the most in the world.

They argued in a couple fics that "Bucky also went rogue after Siberia but he didn't want to associate with Steve, Nat & the rest of the team- WHO HELPED RESCUE BUCKY & EVENTUALLY EXONERATE HIM- but rather, he went off on his own & eventually Tony finds him, they hash it out and become friends to lovers."

Helppp???? Wdym Bucky isn't gonna stick with the one man he's been keeping diaries about to try and get back his memories? But he'll go to the one guy that re-traumatized him by blowing out his arm again?

Not only that, but Bucky absolutely hates Steve in some of these fics and the reason will be, "he left Bucky to go back to Peggy." Like, you cannot be a serious fan if you're still going with the Endgame canon. For a majority of us, we recognize Endgame as being nothing but terrible writing and mischaracterizations. Why are yall not analyzing and interpreting media critically? The MCU has never been on Steve's side and have always diminished his character in an attempt to make Tony the ultimate hero of the OG 6. Don't yall know the discourse? It's embarrassing atp.

And this is my stance on the entire thing: there's nothing wrong with writing fics about characters you don't necessarily like or aren't interested in. It's OKAY if you don't like Steve Rogers- but you've gotta be rational about him, instead of hateful. Most, if not all of these "anti-steve" fics are written in bad faith. Bad understanding of the character and pure, shameless mischaracterizations which just makes these types of fics fickle and weak- hilarious to read though cos that Brock one had me deadddd😭💀.

And checking red eared sliders biology and markings to what people are usually refer to didn't gave me answers either. But I'm not looking into it further anyway).

With creators I've seen a person asked Ron personally about this whole situations, and he said that the team is trying to avoid confirming anything because people already have "the nasty tendency to sexualize them (the turtles and April) anyway", and that they don't want to fuel that fire. And I really hope they will stand by their position.

And you're not alone, anon. Again, I have queer friends and they're also annoyed by this kind of aggressive behavior.

And no matter how much I love Rise, being in the fandom for almost a year been an emotional roller coaster for me. Eddie let out a small sigh as he squeezed Chris’s shoulder. “Yeah, mijo. Of course we can.”

The car ride home was mostly silent as Eddie drove. He kept casting short glances at Christopher, trying to make sure he was okay.

“Dad…” Chris said, softly, a few minutes into the drive.

“Yeah, bud?” Eddie glanced over at him.

“What did we do to Buck?” Chris asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Eddie’s heart skipped at that question. It was a question he had been asking himself since that night Buck had quit talking to them out of the blue.

“I- I don’t know, mijo,” Eddie sighed. “I wish I did, but- but I don’t.”

“You need to talk to him,” Chris said. “You need to try to fix it.”

“I’ve tried, bud,” Eddie explained. “But- whatever is going on, Buck just… needs some time. Some space.”

“But he’s not with us,” Chris complained. “He needs to be with us.”

“He’s not ours, Chris,” Eddie sighed. “Yes he wa- he is our best friend, but he has his own life.”

“That’s not what he told me,” Chris sniffled. “He told me he wouldn’t go anywhere; that he wasn’t going to leave like mom did. He said we were his boys, and he was going to stay with us because he needs us and we need him.”

“He said that?” Eddie asked, looking wide-eyed over at Chris for a moment.

“He said we had each others’ backs,” Chris nodded. “He said that he would always be there for us because we were always there for him. So why is he not here with us, dad?”

Eddie opened his mouth but nothing came out. He felt the sting of tears filling his eyes as he tried to think of an answer for his son, but his mind was drawing blanks at that point. He had no idea that Buck had felt that way about them. Sure, he knew he and Buck were best friends, and he was more like family- but he didn’t know Buck had said that he needed them. 

Eddie couldn’t grapple with the idea that Buck had felt unwanted or that he was too needy in his relationship with Eddie and Chris. He began to search through his mind trying to find answers to the millions of questions that were going through his head, but the only words he could find to explain anything to Chris were the words: “I don’t know, mijo.”

imma rant about something i am sorry. i am a huge conan gray fan. i've been since 2020 when i first heard him on a mutual's spotify playlist. i'm indian and i wasn't on internet before pandemic nor did i used to listen to non hindi songs. i did not know who taylor swift was at the time. i had just heard her name in passing and probably two of her biggest songs (love story, you belong with me)

in 2021 my love for conan grew so much. his music has helped me with so much shit in my life. i also started watching interviews and stuff and he mentioned that taylor was a huge inspiration for him many times. he became besties with liv in 2021 and taylor sent both of them her fearless tv recording (due to which i was introduced to taylor's music)

at this point swifties started using the term 'taylor's children' for conan and olivia and then the whole cruel summer credits thing happened with liv and so many swifties started accusing her of copying taylor with everything she does. she rightfully distanced herself from taylor and as her best friend, conan did too

when midnights came out, an interviewer asked him what his favourite track was. he said something along the lines of 'oh i am on tour right now and i think an album like that deserves to be properly heard. i just haven't had the time to listen to it yet' (nothing to be upset at. he was respectful towards taylor and her music) but oh the swifties went wild. they started unnecessarily trolling him, being racist and homophobic towards him and all that

even now in 2024, whenever he does ANYTHING, swifties make it about him not having heard midnights. it's so annoying atp.

but what will you except from a fandom who were all like father towards joe alwyn when he was still dating their idol. but when they broke up, he is public enemy number 1 "who put her in the basement and didn't let her bejeweled" and their new father is someone when alcohol and anger issues (they are accusing joe of that shit now btw. saying how he was an alcoholic and also accusing him of dv which is so messed up. like always believe victims. but why are they making up rumours of abuse with no proof and no word said by taylor who according to them was abused??)

They spent the ride home in uncomfortable silence. Getting through the crowd this time was a lot more manageable, considering Oliver’s shaken up state and bruised up face the guards had no choice but to shield him from the crowd. He was vaguely aware of his hair sticking to his cheek, where Eddie’s ring split the skin, and braced himself for the worst, when James would inevitably try to brush it away, to take a better look, and the strands would pull on the skin, glued there by half dried blood and it would hurt just as bad as the slap did.

“Do you think anyone saw?” Will asked, looking out the window, still waving at the crowd. 

“We all better hope not” Khai shot an angry glance at Eddie, who didn’t bother to engage with any of them, simply climbed in his bunk and pulled the curtain closed.

Oliver couldn’t find it in himself to be angry with him. He knew that it would have been reasonable, justified even, but good pets are not angry with their owners, and he was Eddie’s just as much as the other boys’ whether he liked it or not. Instead he concentrated on the childishness of it, the way the singer got upset with him not paying enough attention and the way he hid away in the cramped bed space for a half an hour long ride. He was allowed to think he was childish. Juvenile. Immature. 

The engine whirred up and the bus drove away from the venue.

James hooked a finger in his collar, to pull him close, turning his face to the side to inspect it. There it was, the pull, the strands of hair could have turned into gillette blades and Oli would not have known the difference.

“Shh, Oli, it’s okay, just let me check on it” the drummer tried to soothe him as he flinched away “It’s not too deep, don’t worry” he shared the observation, he prodded at the skin around the wound earning some winces out of Oliver “I doubt it will scar, you’ll just need a few days and some ointment”

He leaned the good, left side of his face on the drummer’s shoulder, and watched the streetlights pass by the window and tried to guess where they might be, based on the glimpses he caught of some well-lit buildings.

It was cold outside, unreasonably so; Oliver chalked it up to the breeze and the smell of rain that promised a storm to come. 

He was right about the storm, though it didn’t arrive in the form of thunder and a downpour, but as a red headed woman, standing on their porch with her arms crossed, impatiently clicking the heel of her shoe on the floor tiles. This was the first time ever, Oliver has seen her look at them, with her phone out of sight, and the way the boys stopped in their tracks as they got out of the bus suggested it was a rare occasion for them as well, and it would bring nothing good.

“Everyone, inside, now” Diana turned around and led the way into their own living room.

James stayed behind them with Oliver, closest to the door, but none of them went much further either.

“Are any of you familiar with the concept of public image?” she asked coldly “Because if not, let me refresh your memory, I got the mutt for you to look good, does that ring any bells?” James nodded timidly, just to soothe himself, Diana was not expecting an actual answer.

“You get a pet, because we keep up with the trends, he’s a rescue, so you look charitable” she raised her voice, lecturing them “So please enlighten me, why are you walking him around with his face all fucked up?” she looked at them expectantly, then sighed “Alright then, Khai, anything to say?” The bassist shook his head.

“Edward?” the singer crossed his arms defensively, but glared back at her.

“I didn’t do anything wrong”

“Sure, if you don’t count hitting him for no reason” James spat, and his grip on Oliver’s arm tightened, when Eddie just shrugged.

“Hey, what’s your problem?” 

“It does not matter! It’s all of your problem now that there are pictures of him, like that” she gestured towards Oliver’s face “You morons are lucky, you make a lot of fucking money for me and I’m willing to fix this. And one of you clean him up” 

“James, he’s your favourite toy nowadays…” Eddie sneered.

“Fuck off, you’re the one who got us here in the first place” the drummer retorted. Oliver tried to make himself as small as possible, to avoid drawing any more attention than it was necessary.

“I’ll do it, let’s just not-” Will interrupted, breaking his silence and stepping between his bandmates facing the singer.

“The boyfriend has a brain, I never would have thought!” the guitarist blushed deeply and Diana laughed, loud and shrill, the sound of it made shivers run down all their spines “I’ll leave you to it, and let’s agree this won’t ever happen again” They stepped out of the way as she stormed out of the house and slammed the front door, leaving eerie quiet behind.

“He can’t keep pulling your ass out of trouble” James pushed Oli away from himself so the guitarist could grab his arm and lead him away.

“I can wash it, you don’t have to-” he started, but was immediately cut off “Just shut up, Oli” 

Will opened the tap above the bathtub and turned to the cabinet to look for first aid supplies.

“Sorry” he muttered. He hissed as the guitarist wiped the blood away and sprayed some disinfectant on the wound. 

“Let’s wash your hair too, some blood dried on it” He made the mistake of grabbing Oliver by the collar. His hands shot up to protect his throat and instinctively pulled away.

“Nonono, please no!” He struggled, panicked he would be choked again.

“Stop it!” Will warned, but the boy was too preoccupied with the hand on his collar to listen to him “Oli, stop, I’m not gonna say it again” 

The air was knocked out of him in an instant and he curled in on himself one moment too late to protect his stomach from the hit. Will grabbed him by the hair, and yanked him towards the tub that had filled halfway by then. 

“Down!... Sit!... whichever the word is, just get down” Oliver whined painfully, still grasping at his stomach, where the guitarist punched him, but lowered himself on the floor next to the bath.

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I’ll do better, just give me a second, it hurts” he blurted out, eyes scrunching shut to keep his tears in. He felt so helpless. 

Will’s hand was still entangled in his hair, pulling him up and over the edge of the tub, so he could wash it.

“Can you stop being so difficult for a moment?” He turned Oliver’s head up to face him.

“Fine” He sighed begrudgingly, and let go of the boy. He slumped to the ground, grateful for the momentary peace.

“Better?” Oli nodded and got up to lean his head above the water. He watched their reflections muddle together as the guitarist stood above him and brought the showerhead above him. 

The water was comfortably warm, he felt himself relax into it, still it felt wrong. He really could have done this alone, there wasn’t much blood there anyway. He would just get water on his band tee. He didn’t think, as he pulled back from under the stream to voice his concern.

Will didn’t hesitate, as he put a hand on the back of his neck, just above the collar and pushed him down with enough force that Oli met the water. He wanted to raise his head back up, but the hand kept him under firmly.

He couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t even take a proper breath beforehand. Oliver couldn’t breathe. 

He tried kicking and scratching in the direction he thought Will was, but the other just dodged his tries and all he achieved was his head getting fully underwater.

He was let up suddenly, he coughed up water he hadn’t even noticed got into his mouth and throat.

“Fuck, I’m sorry” Will apologised, tense, not quite sincerely “I didn’t mean to-” Oli wasn’t sure what he could have replied if he could speak.

“Go back to James’ room, I can’t deal with this” he left the bathroom door open after himself and just left. 

Oliver scrambled to his feet, still soaking wet and now shaking like a leaf.

I’m respectfully about to lose my mind at some of the fandom rn with the way buddie shippers are being treated… It’s like no one understands the whole point of shipping a couple is to want them to be together, so duh if something happens that could potentially lead to that pairing they’re going to get excited and theorize? Yes it’s absolutely important for Buck to explore his sexuality outside of buddie but the way people are trying to say that buddie shippers are homophobic for wanting endgame buddie….. when buddie is literally a queer ship? it doesn’t make any sense to me as a queer person myself because it’s like- y’all do realize that buck dating eddie would in fact mean that he is still bisexual, and that people have wanted thst for years, so A) why are we shocked and appalled at buddie shippers for being happy that they are one step closer to endgame buddie, B) why are we calling people homophobic or biphobic when they are quite literally shipping two men together, C) why are we all acting as if buddie endgame hasn’t been simmering just under the surface for YEARS and that if they were going to give us buddie, then thag means buck and eddie would both have to come oit as queer…

I’ve seen so many prominent blogs in the community who have made posts like “buck’s bisexuality has nothing to do with buddie and you are a horrible human for even insinuating that” and so many people are agreeing??? And not to mention the fact that now these same people are trying to villainize and trash on Eddie when in all honesty Buck’s behavior in 7x04 was NOT okay- physically harming someone because they’re not giving you attention is never okay (and i’m saying this as someone whi ADORES Buck, he still needs to be held accountable.)

It just reads very icky to me that so many people are screaming “bi pride” but then spewing all of this vitriol over a ship that would fit within Buck’s bisexuality…

It worries me that the writers are going to see this negativity from people and they’re going to just completely back-burner Eddie’s character in favor of Buck and it disappoints me because even outside of buddie, a major tv show portraying a repressed gay poc with religious and family trauma would be EQUALLY as powerful as Bi Buck is……

but i guess that’s just people only caring about the queer storylines when it’s about a white man since these are also the people acting like Hen and Karen or Michael and David haven’t been there the whole time

You worded it a bit weird but I got what you meant (I hope) so anyone who didn’t may require a little clarification, the sentiment of bucks bisexuality being separate from buddie I think is 1000% correct and I agree wholeheartedly that a persons sexuality and their journey shouldn’t be just about their love interests but about themselves as a person, the issue people are taking is that 1. The people saying this are saying it on every buddie post even when the same blogs posting it have 177283 posts talking about buck as an individual and as a bisexual man outside of buddie and bucktommy, so it’s sort of become a weaponised statement if that makes sense 2. The buddie shippers are the ones who have been advocating so hard for the show to give us canon bi buck like that’s just fact no one can deny so to the og fans who’ve been here for YEARS (I’ve only started like 2023 ish so I’m not counting myself there) this must be such a total slap in the face to be receiving so much hate now

Okay fuck it yeah I'm making the post idc abt backlash. First of all the hidden agenda fandom doesn't exist anymore so whos even gonna have an issue. But if you do feel called out um. Maybe thats ur problem idk bc I'm not aiming at anyone in particular here.

Anyway long ass ramble abt the tiny dead Hidden Agenda fandom below the cut

This is mainly something I noticed looking through the very limited amount of Hidden Agenda fics on ao3, but it's VERY obvious on there. The vast majority of fics on there are centered on Adam and Finn, which I can understand more since they have an interesting backstory and are well written characters, sure. But then you look at the others and the other characters that are centered are... Riggs and Calvary?

In the actual game ofc Becky and Felicity are the main characters. Both of them not only are pretty objectively interesting characters on their own, and even more so together. On top of this they have the most shipping potential of any two characters in that game, it's literally basically canon, it's not even subtext atp it's literally just text. NO other two characters have that amount of chemistry in the game, and yet there is a noticeable lack of gravey fics in that tag. And I'll stress again bc I know how defensive people got last time I made this kind of observation, I'm not pointing fingers or calling anyone misogynistic/racist/homophobic BUT. but. When the two mcs are women, one of which is poc, and they're implied to be lesbians, and they get sidelined by the fandom despite being the focuses of the game... it's kinda hard not to assume there's some kind of bias there.

And on another point, it's similar when it comes to supporting characters too. In a way I'm disappointed but absolutely not surprised that Adam/Finn is prioritized in fan works over Becky/Felicity, but when characters like Riggs and Calvary are also given more attention than them it becomes way more suspicious to me. Riggs is a fine character, I like him enough and I can see why others might like him more, but wbk he doesn't really have all that much relevance. Calvary is even more confusing bc he basically JUST exists to be a creepy misogynistic asshole and as unlikeable as possible. Thankfully I haven't seen him getting a lot of attention but the fact that I've seen him getting any that isn't entirely negative is... hm...

Now there ARE in fact male characters that can be both relevant and likeable: Tom and Karl. (I talk shit abt Karl bc it's a joke I started with friends, I'm gonna drop that for this post obv bc we're being fr here) these two are pretty obviously more relevant than Riggs or Calvary, they're literally Becky's partners (Tom can even replace Riggs' entire role lmao, and if he's replaced himself it's by Karl) and I'd say they're also both likeable characters on their own too. And yet I'm pretty sure I found maybe one??? fic with them in it? Probably should have mentioned this earlier but yeah, they're both poc.

So like... I feel like it all comes down to what Becky/Felicity/Tom/Karl have in common and then what Adam/Finn/Riggs/Calvary have in common. It strikes me as questionable. But like maybe I'm just an annoying snowflake though idk🤷‍♀️ /s

This turned into more of a ramble than anything and I'm aware i'm also yelling into a void bc I'm posting entirely for a dead fandom that barely existed to begin with, but tbh this stuff applies to most if not all larger fandoms as well, i'm just looking at it from what I've seen in the remnants of the HA fandom. - An who has bisexual parents and knew from a young age she liked girls and didn't really need to do a coming out. She just talked about her girl crushes to them and they supported her.

- Kohane who was super anxious when she started questioning her gender and sexuality so she did a big "cliché coming out" to her parents who were super supportive, and probably bought her pride pins and have a "i love my gay daughter" shirt or something.

- Transguy Akito who knew he was a guy from a young age, probably told Ena first who went with him when he did his coming out (Shinei was glad to have a son, he doesn't care either way, I feel like he dated dudes in college as well). Akito never mentions the fact that he's trans or gay, he'll just sometimes talk about his binder hurting or a crush he had on an male actor or something and people just stare at him in disbelief.

- For Toya, loving Akito is just so natural, he doesn't really think about labels, probably was highly attached to the gay characters in the books he read without really understanding why for a while. I'm torn between him doing a power point to his parents to come out, or him never mentioning anything until he drops the bomb that he's engaged to Akito.

- Kotaro. It's impossible he doesn't have a crush on Akito and realized he was queer because of him. He's that reddit post about a a guy worried he's being homophobic towards his roommate but he actually has a crush on him.

- Arata and Souma. Do I even have to say anything atp, I think they're the type of couple that would hold hands even after they fight because they would be sad about it.

- Taiga is gay have you seen this man? You don't get have a tiger fursona and be straight. Definitly had a thing with Ken when they were younger.

- Nagi... That's a bi ace woman for sure.
