Angel the Series | 3x01 "Heartthrob"

Okay, this opening scene (3.07 Offspring) has somewhat solidified my suspicion that James in 3.01 Heartthrob was kinda full of shit.

He was massively salty about Angelus selling out Darla and Elisabeth, used this to accuse Angelus of being incapable of love. The episode seems to support this accusation, suggesting that despite prior moments of tenderness, Darla and Angelus would have no problems letting the other die.

And yet - Angelus saved James in that episode. He warned James against attracting attention, but didn't leave James and Elisabeth high and dry when their reckless behavior put them all in danger. Angelus and James were outnumbered and surrounded by experienced demon hunters. Using Darla as bait allowed he and James to escape.

A bit cold, sure. But all four of them survived the encounter. Darla was Angelus' sire. He was 14 at this point, she was 161. There's literally no reason she wouldn't have been just as capable of defending herself as Angelus. If Elisabeth or Darla had been hurt in this encounter, James definitely would have mentioned it. So if Holtz and his men found the girls, it stands to reason they managed just fine.

And if Angelus does not believe he's actually putting Darla in real danger, how is this a callous display of his lack of care towards her? How is it a betrayal?

I was on the fence about what that episode said about Angelus and his relationship with Darla, then along came this episode. Four years after the Heartthrob scene, Holtz says he doesn't trust Angelus to actually give up Darla. This furthers supports the idea that Angelus' actions in the prior flashback was actually either an outright trick (Darla and Elisabeth didn't go to the docks) or a strategic manouever of some kind (luring Holtz and his men somewhere it was easier to fight/escape).

Darla also comes to save Angelus, showing that they will come through for each other - if there's actual saving that needs to be done.

Kara was supposed to be a Worldkiller.

Let me explain why I wrote Darkness in All Things.

The crux of it really starts with this canon line. In 3x11, Kara ventures to Fort Rozz to find Jindah Kol Rozz - the priestess witch who might know how to defeat Reign.

It's there that Jindah - who emphasizes that there is "darkness in all things, in every soul you know" - reveals that Reign is not the only worldkiller. The others will awake, and unite beneath the banner of Reign.

The Power. The Pestilence. The Purity.

But who is Power?

To answer who is Power, we may need to start with who are the worldkillers.

In the comics, the worldkillers were created by Zor-El (who also experimented on his daughter). There were actually many worldkillers before Krypton's destruction, including Reign and her three followers.

This show has a way of reinventing comic plots. The black mercy plot, Red Son, World's Finest - all comic lore that was reimagined for Arrowverse Kara.

In season 3, we see Erica Durance (famous for Smallville's Lois Lane) take on the role of Alura. This in itself implies something big for Alura. It's not too much of a stretch to think that maybe she would take Zor-El's place as creator of the worldkillers.

And it would sure explain Sam's nightmare above, which we see at the very end of 3x01, and is never addressed again.

So we have a hint that there may be a fourth worldkiller named Power, and that perhaps Alura would take Zor-El's role in the comic of having created them. Why Kara?

Kara dreams of the worldkillers - for reasons she doesn't quite understand. But she only dreams of three. If Jindah says there are four, why don't we see the fourth in Kara's dream?

I've spoiled it already, of course: the dreamer is one.

So why didn't we see Worldkiller Kara?

It's important to note that an abusive showrunner was fired in the middle of the season - prompting rewrites & the odd midspring break.

It explains why the nightmare with Alura was never revisited, why Lena wasn't made evil despite the showrunner saying otherwise, and why Sam survived when the plot & casting call hinted at Sam's death & Ruby being adopted by Alex. It also explains why the show emphasized Alura's line from the pilot - you will do extraordinary things - 3x02 Triggers.

I could be wrong, of course - but it's still an idea that ate at me. What would it look like for Kara have to wrestle with a destructive purpose? How would the team defeat the worldkillers if their strongest fighter was one of them? What would that mean for the rift that was developing between Lena and Kara with the kryptonite and spying?

... which is why I wrote Darkness in All Things.

headcanon: "slightly late courtier" in bill is humphrey

i thought about this several weeks months ago (post got lost in my drafts whoopsie) and the more i think about it the more i love it.

first of all, it feels very humphrey to me lol

humphrey died during elizabeth i's reign (3x01 conspiracy to kill liz)

humphrey met henry viii (implied in 1x04 when talking about the house's history, confirmed in 4x01 ghost convo about famous people)

humphrey and sophie are from noble families (2x06 convo with fanny), and humphrey has the title of "sir" (3x01). this means it's entirely possible he could have been a courtier of liz and possibly henry. (did he and sophie host henry? or did they both just visit the house for the event?)

henry dined at the house and humphrey knows what he ate (1x03). he could not have witnessed this as a ghost since again, he died when liz i reigned.

HOWEVER, humphrey's age... as @ailendolin pointed out, even if we're being generous about his age, he'd have to be .. i think it was 6 when henry viii was there and 50 in bill? however, i'm choosing to either be generous beyond believability, or ignoring it completely bc i just love this too much

I have a question for you for nice ask day…since you chose the awkward pining 3x01 scene in the season 3 poll, would you add more pining/breakup era to season 3 if you could? Say you could add a couple breakup era episodes to the beginning of season 3 pre-ice storm—what would you want to happen?

I tried to answer this this morning and wrote out 4 long paragraphs and then tumblr ate it (my fault though). ANYWAY. Breakup era!!!

I’m torn because I love the ice storm arc exactly as it is, although obviously I always want more details. But I think it’s constructed pretty perfectly, with the pining/tension, Carlos’s frustration and heartbreak, then TK’s reveal about why it happened, all culminating in that perfect, beautiful, emotional wake-up scene.

I actually appreciate that we don’t see the breakup onscreen. I don’t particularly need to. And I wouldn’t want to draw out the breakup for too long, but in a hypothetical situation where we got a couple episodes before the ice storm arc, I’d love to see:

- TK being in his head a lot, probably being in a bad mood (especially at first), but refusing to talk to anyone.

(I have this visual that will never leave me, where TK shows up to work one day VERY grumpy, and Paul’s like, what’s up with you? And TK does NOT want to talk about it but finally just rips the bandaid off and says, “Carlos and I broke up.” Everyone is like, “Whaaat why?” and “It’s just a fight, you’ll get back together,” and TK is very firm that that it’s permanent but refuses to talk about it anymore and just shuts down if anyone brings it up.)

- TK and Owen (or even Gwyn) discussing the breakup, even if he won’t tell them what happened. It would be a good chance to bring up TK’s impulsive and self destructive tendencies, as they relate to his addiction. Also, TK is a child of divorce and I don’t think they talk often enough about the effect that would have on TK’s romantic relationships. His parents didn’t show him what a stable marriage looked like, and he’s probably also scared that everyone leaves and/or relationships always end.

- I know I’ve written Carlos nearly dying getting injured while they’re broken up (Fic: A safe distance), but I’m still kinda obsessed with the idea of it. Like TNT and Carlos on the same scene, and then Carlos gets hurt. Tommy tends to him, but TK is just itching to check him out. Maybe even wants to check on him later, but obviously doesn’t.

- It would be kinda funny if the rest of the Catan gang tried to meddle and get them back together. It could go VERY poorly and I’d love to see it.

- I also just want to see the rest of the 126 gossiping about it. I want to see firsthand what Nancy meant by “Everyone loves you guys together.”

- I would need Judd being a big brother and trying to comfort TK and talk some sense into him!

- Shots of Carlos eating dinner alone in the loft, while TK listens to music alone at his dad’s place.

I had a feeling it was going to be Nic's sister who died. The fake-out at the beginning was mean :'( And then they blew up Karen from OTH and gave her brain cancer. Although the addition of the very dashing Morris Chesnut doing her surgery while Lil Nas X was playing did help improve the mood.

Chucky 3x05 Death Becomes Her

Chucky wrestles with his mortality, while Jake and Devon take their romance to the next level.

How are all the Collinses hallucinating the people Chucky has recently killed? Is the Damballa-voodoo-veil getting thinner as Chucky deteriorates? And Jake and Devon making time to be together away from the chaos was very sweet. Hopefully their first time won't also be their last.

The group is ambushed by a threat no one sees coming. After a hard-fought battle at the Baratie, Sanji finally follows his dreams while another crew member shows their true colors.

Was young Sanji also Gus SweetTooth? He has a good ear for accents at such a young age. Zeff was such a surprisingly caring papa. I can't believe he chopped off and ate his own leg just so the boy wouldn't starve. If he ever needs help braiding his funky little plaited 'tash, he can call me.

30 Days of Buffy Challenge

29. Favorite Season Opener Anne - Season 3

This was a hard decision to make. I was sort of stuck between picking s3 or s5, but in the end I chose this one - and you'll see why tomorrow.

I chose Anne because of multiple reasons: The polarity of it all - seeing the Scoobies try and keep up the Slayer duties while Buffy is away, and failing miserably, then switching to the dreadful life Buffy is living in LA. Getting to hate Joyce even more than you had before! Eventually seeing Buffy get her fire back and kick evil people's asses after seeing her be depressed and unmotivated.

Overall, I just think it's one hell of an opener. It's a great segue from the finale of the second season after seeing Buffy leave, it's got some heartbreaking shots that make you want to cry, I could go on!

Buffy giving her name (Anne) to 'Lily' at the end is probably my favorite part of the whole episode.

And for those of you who haven't watched Angel: The Series yet, Anne pops up in s2. She dedicates her livelihood to helping homeless teens - which makes a lot of sense, considering she was almost kidnapped by demons who were exploiting said homeless teens in this episode!

(also, a very unimportant fact, Anne is wearing a t-shirt with the Denton sign from Rocky Horror Picture Show on it. This is something that is only meaningful to me but I do not care.)

To summarize:

"I'm Buffy. The Vampire Slayer - and you are?" is the best line ever written in the history of forever.

Ok anon, I hope you’re ready cause this is a DOOSY. I would call this an AU that takes place after 3x01.

WARNING: possible alcohol abuse, possible drug abuse, and possible suicidal tendencies. There is fluff but due to these warnings I am inserting a Read More link in case this is not someone’s cup of tea. 

Lucy Chen had gotten good at hiding it until one day she didn’t. She could flawlessly cake on the concealer to hide the dark bags under her eyes and make it look natural, she could survive off a can of Bang or the strongest, darkest cup of coffee you could put in her hand. The only thing she couldn’t do? Was hide from her demons, because they will always catch up to her no matter how fast she runs.

She told him she was fine when they went to the Prison to visit with Rosalind Dryer, that she could handle it, that if she ‘could not handle dealing with Rosalind in the cage she shouldn’t be a cop’. She told him she was fine when they got back into the shop, that what that monster said didn’t affect her. She told him she was fine when they got off shift, that she was going to go home and have a large glass of wine. She told him, but she was everything but fine.

Tim Bradford had just fallen asleep, staying up later than usual knowing he didn’t have to work the next day. He got home as the sun set, letting Kojo out to run the backyard as he made chicken carbonara for dinner. He ate in-front of the TV, watching as the LA Kings pulled off a big overtime win to give them three points versus the Anaheim Ducks, pushing them closer to a chance to secure a spot for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He during intermissions he worked on cleaning his house, threw a tennis ball around for Kojo and got ready for bed. His brain had finally relented from his thoughts, allowing him peace as he dozed off, only to be woken by the sound of his charging phone buzzing on the nightstand.  He ignored it as it stopped vibrating, only to begin again.

He sighed “Bradford.”

“It’s West, I need you to come to the apartment.”

“Everything ok?” he asked as the threw the covers off, stepping into the sweat pants next to the bed, grabbing and slipping on the pullover hanging on the back of the door.

“It’s Lucy.”

“On my way.” He told the other officer before hanging up, his thoughts berating himself. Not that he was frustrated at his rookie but more at himself, he knew that after what she did today, she had lied about being fine. He had noticed the copious amounts of sugar and caffeine that seemed to be a constant in her hand the past few weeks. But he had held out hope that she would talk to him, tell him what was going on in that beautiful brain of hers, tell him the things she needed to get off her chest.

Tim grabbed his gun from the nightstand, slipping it into the waistband before he threw an old pair of tennis shoes on, moving to the foyer to grab his keys from the basket, glancing at the dog who was snoring away in his crate as he locked up the house and got into his truck. The drive was quiet and smooth for 11:30 of a night, the amount of traffic miniscule as he pulled up in-front of her building.

He locked the truck, punching in the code for the door before making his way to the elevators. He sent a text to Jackson, telling him he was here as he stepped on the car. The car slowed to a stop on the sixth floor, the doors opening to show Jackson standing in the hallway.

“What’s wrong?” Tim asked as he approached.

Jackson rubbed a hand down his face “She was fine when I left a few hours ago, and well I came back to this..” he said as he opened the door.

Tim stepped in, immediately noticing the almost empty bottle of tequila tipped over on the counter and the pills with no bottle that were scattered across the rock. His stomach plummeted as he began to think the worst.

“Did she take any?”

“I’m not sure, she won’t talk to me.” Jackson said as he pointed to the girl sitting on the floor with her back against the wall.

“Chen.” Tim said as he moved closer, crouching down in-front of her. She was staring ahead, tear tracks and a blank expression on her face. “Lucy.” He said softly, grabbing her chin in his hand. “Do you have your pen light?”

Jackson moved to his duffle bag next to the door, grabbing the small pen before walking back, handing the device over. Tim turned it on, shining it into her eyes when Lucy began to speak. “I didn’t take any.”

“Let me check.” Tim said as he looked into her eyes. “You know the drill.”

Lucy’s eyes followed the light as Tim moved it. He conducted his test, determining she was telling the truth, her eyes glossed from the alcohol. “I told you.” She told him as he handed the pen back to Jackson.

“I know, but I needed to know if I needed to call for an ambulance or not.” He said, his tone angry as he stood, walking over to the sink, taking a deep breath as Jackson joined him.

“What happened today?” Jackson asked quietly.

Tim grabbed a glass from the dish drainer, filling it with water. “We went to see Rosalind and she knew things she shouldn’t.”

Jackson nodded in understanding, “Listen, she’s talking to you and not me so I’m going to head to my room. Yell if you- yell if you need anything.” Jackson told the superior as he turned and walked away, glancing worriedly at his friend that rested her head on her knees sitting on the floor.

Tim grabbed the full glass, walking back over to Lucy, handing the water to her. “Drink, boot.”

Lucy drank the glass of tap water, handing it back to Tim as he walked to refill it again. “I didn’t-“ she stumbled over her words. “I didn’t try to-“

“I know.” He said softly, his fingers grasping the countertop, his knuckles turning white. “I know you didn’t.”

A tear made its way down Lucy’s face as she swiped it away. “I just want it to stop.”

Tim sat the glass on the coffee table, sitting down next to Lucy, kicking off his shoes. “Talk to me.”

Lucy stared down at the legs beside hers, “You know, I knew you were tall but your legs are like really long.”

“Chen.” He softly reprimanded as her head fell into his shoulder.

“Sorry.”

“Don’t apologize. Never- never apologize. What he- what they did-“

Silence overtook them as his words drifted off. The glow from the LA nightlife filtered into the living room through the window pane, casting a soft light in the room. Tim had assumed that Lucy had fallen asleep, her arm tangled with his as her hand rested on his thigh. He thought back to things she had told him, her telling him that her comfort, her safety came from a forty-year-old chunk of metal. Him having to hear Rosalind sing the song that gave her hope, that kept her alive. The panic and distress of almost loosing her, neither of them knew it but he needed her too.

“I thought- I thought I was doing better. I stopped seeing my therapist, eased back on my meds. I can see now that was a mistake.” She whispered into the night. “But the nightmares started again and I just- I don’t want to close my eyes because every time, every time I do I see-“

Tim waited for her to finish. “You see what Chen?”

“It varies,” she told him as she wiped away the new tears, sniffling. “sometimes it’s Caleb, sometimes it’s Rosalind, sometimes it’s you.”

Tim startled, “Me?”

Lucy nodded, “Yeah. Most of the time, I can’t- I can’t find you, I hear your voice, but I can never catch up.”

“Lucy that’ll never-“

“Happen?” she finished for him. “Other times it’s a repeat of our first day together.”

Tim snorted. “You never expected to deal with a GSW on your first day did you?”

“No!” Lucy laughed as she turned to him. “Though with you I should know to expect the unexpected.”

Tim looked at her before whispering “Expect the unexpected huh? That’s what I always expect with you.”

Lucy tilted her head back as she glanced at his lips before focusing back to his eyes. Tim leaned in closer, his own eyes looking at her cherry red lips. Their lips a hair breadth away, so close their breaths were intertwining.

“We can’t.” Tim whispered against her lips.

Lucy stayed still, “I know.”

“We shouldn’t.”

“I know.”

“You’ve been drinking.”

“I know. But, I need-“ Lucy said swallowing her words before gaining courage. “I need you. I just need you. You don’t- we don’t-. Can you please just hold me?” She asked pulling back, unshed tears glistening her eyes. “Please.”

Tim Bradford could count on both hands the moments he could feel his heart break. This, his rookie, someone he shouldn’t be this close to, begging him for comfort was one of those moments, the pain in his chest growing heavier as the knife plunged deeper.

“Ok.” He whispered, moving to stand. Once he was steady on his feet he bent over, putting one arm behind her, the other going under her knees.

“What are you doing?”

“What does it look like?”

“I can walk.”

“Not alone.” He told her as he carried her to her room, putting her in the middle of the mattress before he slid in beside her. Lucy grabbed her weighted blanket from the end of the bed, tossing it over her body before stretching her hand out, reaching for his. And Tim Bradford, never telling a soul, choosing to keep the secret to himself as he stayed up, his thumb rubbing circles on the back of Lucy’s hand in comfort, his own emotions fighting to the surface. His monsters and demons clawing their way out of their prison, getting the better of him in the quiet space before he could stop them. He stared at the darkness around him, save for the nightlight glowing from an outlet across the room. Lucy sighed in her sleep, her body moving closer into Tim’s side, one of her legs escaping its confinement as she threw it over one of his as her other hand landed on his chest. Oof any Nace scene lives in my mind rent free TBH. But, specifically, the stair scene in 3x01, the dreamscape scene in 2x18 (and like the almost confession/left something behind) and the one in 3x04, the library scene in 1x14, 2x10 like that entire episode, 1x10 is like when their romantic story started so that too, the scenes in 2x09 and 2x13. Headcanons: i love my future verse where Nace have three kids Katy, Lulu, and Hudson so anything with them but other than that…

1. Ace thinks green jello is the best because it’s all he ate when his dad was in the hospital and it’s a good memory for his six year old self.

So, 15x01 (abundant spoilers)

@dixseptdixhuit​ there’s something wrong with my activity page (aren’t we shocked by this unforeseen turn of events) and it ate your reply but basically - 15x01 is an introductory episode, it sets the scene for the next few episodes and the conflicts that are going to develop. Souls from hell have sprung out from the spot where they are and they need to stop them from going around the world and also save the neighboring town there some ghosts (which they had hunted before) are ghosting their way around.

Basically there are several nods to the earlier (earliest, mostly - s1 and s3 are the most obvious) seasons but it’s also kind of weird because the aesthetic, tone and even color of the show have changed so much that the nods feel like references to a different show... this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just kind of weird. If you compare it with 3x01 (which it parallels very strongly in terms of plot, it kinda has the same plot) you just realize how much the show has shifted since then... or maybe it’s just that, unlike back then, the screen isn’t 99% black so you can actually see that the show does not have a massive budget.

There are subtextual reasons for which nods are made - for instance there are multiple callbacks to episodes about children, especially dead children and guilt (the woman in white, Dead In The Water, Bloody Mary, 3x01, 3x02...) - which tie to Jack’s death and his parents’ reactions but also Dean’s and Sam’s broken childhoods, especially Dean’s, as the final “bro moment” has them recalling their childhood and how Dean took care of Sam (and still does). Even in death Jack keeps being a strong mirror for Dean...

Anyway I think that the “ghosts on the loose” problem will be fixed very soon, possibly in the next episode, because bigger threats have been hinted at (Sam’s wound from when he shot at Chuck with the special gun has Something Weird Going On, and the Cage in hell sprung open, which explains how Adam will come back, but also means that Original Flavor Michael is no longer caged... *Crowley voice* draaa~ma! But it’s clear that it’s the characters’ emotional reactions that are what drives the story, and for now we have Cas and Dean on the edge of a conflict and Sam pretending he’s fine. *shock*

Cas and Dean’s ways of grieving are pretty much incompatible and that’ll clearly drive them apart temporarily, Dean does what works from him - pushing the loss down and focusing on the practical aspects on the situation, i.e. let’s do what we need to do to survive - while Cas, who does not have the same experiences and hasn’t grown up focusing on survival, is focused on Jack’s loss and feels dismissed by Dean, while Dean feels irked by Cas dealing with the situation “incorrectly”. Obviously neither is wrong, their lives just suck. Couples splitting after the loss of a child is a very common thing in real life, anyway, so I wasn’t expecting anything different.

The new character is pretty much a gay demon (the episode does not lack in queer subtext) that obviously is not going to be their friend forever (for now he’s the Ruby that in 3x01 appears and helps them, except more flamboyant - if he stays on their side he’d just be a deus demon ex machina which is not a good narrative thing, but, hey, who knows) but his dynamic with Dean has been pretty fun despite all the angst that runs across the episode due to Jack’s loss.The episode basically sets the scene for an emotional arc for Dean and Cas and a There’s Something Wrong With Sam arc for Sam, which is, like... how Supernatural works? Next week will be a plotty episode with Rowena and Ketch that presumably will fix the ghost issue so that we can pass to the juicier things, and I expect it to be a mix of angsty faces and witty remarks...

It’s interesting that they think that God is no longer a “problem” because they think he’s just abandoned this draft of the story and just passed on to a new one, but that’s obviously... too good to be true. But that’s a problem for later in the season...

i know you bring flash1x20 up a lot in your meta. is it your fave episode of the show? why do you like it so much?

I didn’t even know that I bring up 1x20 often. I honestly don’t remember which episodes I talk about frequently, other than 3x01, 3x21, and 4x15, because I know for a fact I talk about those episodes A LOT. I wasn’t under the impression that I talk about 1x20 more than I do other episodes, but maybe I do, lol. 

In relation to 1x20, specifically, since you asked, well, objectively I think it’s a very good episode. The story-telling is fast-paced, and it’s one of those episodes where not even a minute is wasted (and there are only a handful of Flash episodes which can claim such a feat), and every character has good moments in that episode. Also the humor in this episode is top-tier (Cisco and the shirt that he thought the dryer ate; Barry bumping straight into Iris after talking with Singh about Singh’s upcoming nuptials (foreshadowing at its finest); Eddie showing Barry the engagement ring, and Barry being all, “I think she’s gonna want to hyphenate,” when Eddie walks away. The humor employed is both charming and seamless, and it doesn’t in any way detract from what is otherwise quite a serious, dramatic episode. Plus, I love episodes which mirror previous episodes. Part of the reason I love 3x21 so much is that it mirrors 3x01, with Iris getting to experience her own mini Flashpoint and having to make a decision to return to the way things were before Barry lost his memories, the same way Barry had his Flashpoint and had to make a decision to reverse Flashpoint. There’s something so poetic about this kind of story-telling, but it’s also very rare in The Flash’s history, and 1x20 is another example of mirroring. In this case, 1x20 mirrors 1x15 stunningly. The stakes and immediate intensity aren’t as high in the short-term in 1x20 as they were in 1x15 (I always say that 1x15 feels it builds to this mighty crescendo that is truly unmatchable, with Iris’s feelings for Barry bubbling more and more to the surface until they tumble out of her in a moment of high emotional intensity, just as the stakes of that episode become explosive, what with Mardon having kidnapped Joe and readying to send a tidal wave upon the city, and Cisco confronting Thawne), but the characters have garnered a lot more knowledge about Thawne, and so the sense of foreboding is particularly heightened in 1x20. It’s also the episode which tells the story of the SPARK; Iris first feeling that jolt of electricity when she goes to see Barry at S.T.A.R. Labs (and we get the first direct mention of home in relation to Westallen), and then the jolt of electricity which later passes between her and the Flash’s fingers, signaling to her that Barry is the Flash. It’s so subtle, but such a beautiful visual representation of Barry and Iris’s love, while also empowering Iris in that moment, as she discovers on her own, through this unique connection with Barry that only she is aware of at the time, that her best friend is the Flash. So yeah, overall a great episode.

She’s taking a holiday from dealing, happily vacationing in the land of Not Coping. When she breaks down, it’s going to be awful…

The girl just touched the Sheriff and he invited them in and holy hell! They’re vampires! We got vampires! How did I not immediately guess they were vampires when I described them as extra and hipsters? Of course!

They’re very subtle…

So, just with a touch, they can glamour people? Is that it?

6) Waves and Nicole are in bed, and they’re all jokey about Nicole’s marriage and Waverly’s make-out sesh with Rosita, so I guess they’ve already worked through their issues. It would’ve been very interesting to actually see them work it out, and not just have this post-coital love bubble.

7) Why is this turning me on?

I guess it’s also turning them on a little bit, so we’re all on the same team… That is, until Doc brings up their baby, who is 19 weeks by now. Ouch.

8) She really wants to make things right with him… I guess my ship is not dead yet…

He won’t touch me unless we’re training and he won’t talk to me unless he’s angry. So I keep him training and angry.

So he’s obviously still not over the “giving up the baby” thing, which makes total sense. But how is Wynonna feeling? I’m guessing she’s absolutely wrecked, hence all the drinking and partying. I wonder when or how the show will address this. 

9) Hmm. Waverly brings up a memory about their mother, but Wynonna doesn’t mention how she’s been seeing her. I’m guessing this is a Big Secret that’s bound to come out during this season, right? The question is, why did their mother leave and how and why did Wynonna keep in touch with her?

10) Nedley is wearing a scarf around his neck and I’m guessing he’s been bitten.

11) Well, someone enjoyed a good ol’ feast, didn’t they?

Nedley was very adamant that “they didn’t do this”, that is to say, the vamps. And now Nicole is saying that these massacres have been happening since the 1920s, carried out by a group self-ascribed as the Cult of Bulshar. Cool. Cool cool cool.

12) Well, some light has been shined on those final scenes from the season 2 finale. Nicole, quite conveniently, waited nearly 5 months to tell Wynonna and Waverly that when Mercedes mentioned Bulshar it rang a bell, and Dolls gave her some BBD files – the ones we saw her holding in the last scene of the season 2 finale. Waverly seems to have no issue with this, but Wynonna is definitely taken aback by learning this information just now. I think she feels she hasn’t been let in on some key information about the demon that has been after her family for ages. Of course, Nicole and Dolls were probably just trying to protect the Earps and figure out if they could fight this demon without endangering them. But it is kind of odd that Dolls has chosen Nicole as his confidant and that he’s purposefully withholding information from Wynonna...

13) Nicole seems to be triggered watching the whole crime scene, which coupled with the fact that she mentioned having heard the name Bulshar before probably means she was either A) the daughter of one of the people attacked by the cult, or B) witnessed one of these massacres as a child, or C) both.

14) Cool, Waverly and Nicole have both been glamoured. And the vampire boss bitch told Waves she needs them as “tributes.” Is this some Hunger Games shit?

Is their mom in a mental hospital or in prison? It looks like a prison, but she also looks a bit… deranged? But can it be a prison? We saw Wynonna meeting her in a mountain or something like that… Anyway, Wynonna keeps asking her to tell her more about Bulshar, but she won’t budge. She doesn’t trust Wynonna will be able to break the curse and she fears she might endanger Waverly.

17) The vampires want to turn Doc into one of their own. The only catch, in order to prove that it’s really him, he has to endure torture. I don’t know who is in charge of the recruiting division in this vampire undertaking but that’s not how you lure new recruits…

18) Okay, so it’s a prison. But what is she in prison for? And why does Waverly seem to believe she simply left them? Okay, Wynonna just answered my question – their Dad told them to hide the truth from Waverly, which makes sense when she was a little kid, but I’m betting she’ll be super pissed when she finds Wynonna has been keeping this tidbit of info for almost two decades?

19) Wait, what did I miss? Dolls just turned towards Wynonna all meaningful looks and what-not, he said “Wynonna”, they stared at each other, and then he just got off the car – and left his cheeseburger. Who the fuck does that? I hate it when characters do that shit with food in movies and TV shows! But seriously, what did I miss? Was this a “Dolls almost confessed his feelings but thought better of it” moment? Or was it just his lactose intolerance kicking in...?

20) Cool. So now, everyone but Wynonna and Doc is under the vampires’ influence.

21) So, the Vampire Boss Bitch and Doc have history. Go figure. She called him an asshole, so she must know him pretty well.

23) So everyone has been glamoured, pimped up, and now they’re taking down Wynonna. I guess it’s all in Doc’s hands, now.

24) So, the vampires’ plan is to either turn or eat everyone in town. And everyone is super cool with it because they’ve been glamoured. Except Nicole seems to be remembering something, she’s called herself a survivor, the survivor… of one of the Cult of Bulshar’s massacres, maybe?

I thought Dolls was glamoured, too. He’s either telling the truth or he’s setting Wynonna up.

26) “We’re gonna need more stakes.” Wynonna is going full Buffy and I’m fucking here for it!

29) OMFG, when these vampires get staked they turn into purple dust! But… wait… when they arrive, they do it surrounded by a cloud of purple fog? Does that mean they use other vampires’ ashes to give some pizzazz to their entrance?

And as each vampire gets staked, the glamoured people become unglamoured and they are starting to kick some vamp ass! I mean, look at Nedley!

30) “I will not get ate while tied to a stripper pole.” You know, good for you, Doc, we all need to set goals for ourselves. And that’s as good as any.

31) Oookay…?

She told him they’ve done things to her she doesn’t want done to him, and asked him to stay in the Vengabus, but of course, he didn’t.

32) He just jumped through a window and staked a vampire who was about to eat Nedley and now they’re smiling at each other and slowly walking towards each other and I’m dead!

They look so hot, why aren’t they kissing already?

33) Wait, is this Bulshar?

Is this how they’ve shown the face of the Big Bad? An underwhelming reveal with little warning?

34) These two…

They’re finally acting amicably, without angry training or silence treatment. Wynonna feels elated that he’s having a drink with her again like they used to, and they toast to Alice, which is the elephant in the room. I mean, who better to understand how each of them feels about giving up their daughter than each other? They really need to be each other’s person for this.

37) So, Dolls is egging Wynonna on to talk to Waverly, I’m guessing about their mom, and he can’t help but take a jab at her for choosing Doc, and I thought he was over the whole fighting with Doc over Wynonna? I guess not.

38) Okay, I totally saw this coming:

NICOLE: I’m starting to think there was a Cult of Bulshar survivor once. And it was me.

39) And just when Wynonna was about to tell Waverly about their mother…

And now Waverly is being dragged from the wreck and taken away?!

I did not see that coming!

40) This was an interesting season opener, with a much lighter tone than I expected and barely touching on the unresolved issues from last season. Bulshar seems to be the Big Bad, but for one, his reveal was lackluster at best. Suddenly, the camera cut to his face and that was it. He was just standing there. Not too ominous for a Big Bad. Nicole is about to be given a Big Backstory, so I guess that will be interesting to find out, although I think I would’ve been completely fine with her just being a regular human who stumbled upon the supernatural, you know? Jeremy is still having a bro crush on Doc, and I love it, especially because it goes both ways (I totally caught Doc telling the revenant that Jeremy is a vegetarian, which continues to cement the fact that they know each other very well, they’re buddies!) Waverly and Nicole seem to be on solid ground, but I wonder how figuring out where she comes from will affect Waverly’s relationships with Nicole and Wynonna. All in all, a solid, fun episode, although probably not one of the show’s most memorable ones. Very excited to see where this season takes us, though.
