Today's Manga Is: Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro
When the anime for this came out, I noticed a couple of posts & articles talking about how appalling and over-the-line the titular heroine Nagatoro's bullying of the protagonist, "Senpai", was -- and I thought, "really? people are shocked and offended to discover femdom fetish content in their femdom fetish series?"
But now that I've finally had to actually read this thing... yeah, I was right: that controversy was a bunch of pearl clutching nonsense. Nagatoro's behavior isn't much worse than the way the male leads treat female leads in series like Black Panther and Sweet 16, Yakuza Fiancé, Hot Gimmick, or Boys Over Flowers.
More importantly, Nagatoro's bullying/teasing of Senpai is written for the titillation of male audiences, which means it's not a realistic depiction of bullying -- It's a sexualized softcore fantasy version. Senpai is portrayed as beleaguered, put-upon, and at the mercy of women (especially sadistic bullies like Nagatoro) because a lot of men prefer to think of themselves as less powerful than women, and play the victim -- especially in the context of romantic/sexual relationships. It's not unusual to see this dynamic/fantasy played out in other series, like The Quintessential Quintuplets, Rent-A-Girlfriend, Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon, Tune In To The Midnight Heart, and Medaka Kuroiwa is Impervious to My Charms, which feature a lot of softcore scenes and fetishistic romantic fantasies.
This would all feel less icky if Nagatoro's motivations, desires, and thought processes were explored and given space in the narrative -- particularly her reasons for fixating on Senpai -- but she's essentially a manic pixie dream girl for masochistic guys. A better series might flesh out Nagatoro's desire to humiliate and dominate Senpai by pointing out that she (and other girls) are expected to welcome (or at least tolerate) a wide variety of demeaning, degrading, domineering behavior from men (including men like Senpai, who see themselves as weak and powerless). But instead we just have Nagatoro throwing around insults like "gross" and "disgusting" and shaming Senpai for being a pervert, as if those are generic apolitical insults on par with accusing Senpai of being stinky or stupid.
The main flaw of this series, though, is that the chapters are all short and repetitive. Apparently this series originated as a series of Pixiv posts, which would explain that. At least this series is not as repetitive as Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie, but it's still pretty shallow. There's no real overarcing plot tying things together. It's obviously straight off the bat that Nagatoro and Senpai are into one another (physically, at least), because they're both drawn with an overheated blush that often signals "feeling worked up sexually/romantically" in manga, because Nagatoro is constantly introducing sexually charged ideas into their interactions, and because Senpai never makes a real effort to avoid or cut short these encounters with Nagatoro. The narrative is merely a succession of softcore scenarios, that presumably will eventually lead to Nagatoro and Senpai getting together, but which don't really develop the characters or introduce any lasting elements to the series -- even thoough Senpai and Nagatoro both seem to have offpage hobbies and interests from whence one could come up with conflicts and plot threads.
Also -- and this is really trivial -- I find it irritating that although Kodansha's plot summary for this series describes Nagatoro as a high school freshman; on-page Nagatoro introduces herself to Senpai as a sophomore. This affects basically nothing about the series, but I didn't like being confused by this.

Today's Manga Is: Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon: My Trusted Companions Tried to Kill Me, But Thanks to the Gift of an Unlimited Gacha I Got LVL 9999 Friends and Am Out For Revenge on My Former Party Members and the World
Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
You know what would be a cool and potentially interesting direction for this series to take? If this manga acknowledged that the main character's LVL 9999 "friends" are basically magical chatbots, not real people who the main character managed to befriend through force of personality. Because then we might end up with a series that's actually thoughtful about the way people are affected by rejection & social ostracization -- or at least a series that doesn't uncritically conflate self-subjugating sycophancy with genuine friendship in ways that undermine the emotional core of the series.
Because the appeal of a Count of Monte Cristo style "I'd damn myself just to see you go through hell" revenge drama is that it's not a "living well is the best revenge" series like Because I, The True Saint, Was Banished, That Country is Done For! There has to be some sort of suspense and tension over the possibility that Backstabbed's protagonist Light* might end up sacrifice his new friendships to further his vengeful cause; or else the author's hand on the scales becomes a bit too obvious.
* I realize Death Note's Light Yagami doesn't have a monopoly on being an edgelord antiheroric protagonist, but being reminded of Light Yagami whenever Backstabbed's protagonist gets called by his name sure isn't doing Backstabbed In A Backwater Dungeon any favors.
That, and it's also just boring and unpleasant to read a series about a prepubescent male character with no personality and an army of maids doting on his every fart -- see also I Was Reincarnated As The Seventh Prince. I don't care how hard these kinda series try to stack the deck in order to make readers sympathize with the protagonist: I will root against the ickle well-intentioned goody-goody twelve year old protagonist if I get the feeling that he's a hollow self-insert wish-fulfillment character for a grown-ass man whose entitlement issues spawned a fullblown victim complex.
It would have been better if this series framed Light as more of an antihero type -- similar to how Commander In Chief Of the Magic Guild: A Second Chance At School Life didn't shy away from showing evidence that the protagonist (and the kid whose body he snatched) wasn't exactly a great example of a nice, selfless, pure-hearted hero. Alternatively, more emotional depth could have been added by making Light's former companions less two-dimensionally awful. They turn on him so fast, for no apparent reason, that it just doesn't feel psychologically realistic. They didn't have to be written as morally ambiguous or conflicted, but more depth there was warranted (similar to how the toxic companions in The Banished Court Magician Aims to Become the Strongest needed more unique personalities to stand out).
Tangential final thought: every time the characters talked about Light's "unlimited gatcha" skill, it made me think about how weird it is when otherwise straightforward pure fantasy stories un-self-consciously use contemporary video game terminology.
Overall, this is an extremely blatant & uncreative they'll-all-be-sorry wish fulfillment fantasy; that doesn't commit hard enough to being a revenge fantasy because it's too busy establishing that the protagonist has a billion weed-smoking girlfriends who love, cherish, and obey him with no questions asked. It's absolutely not worth reading. The art is competent enough that it's easy to skim through and still understand the action; but this aspect of the series is just as generic and bland as the writing.
