Last shoot in Bali for Facebook, feels like a lifetime ago. For this assignment the editor requested that the photos had to be shot with analog film. Me and @gembong_ scoured all over Jakarta to gather just over a dozen roll of 35mm Kodak Portra. This was shot with Nikonos V, an underwater film camera and mine didn’t have an operating meter. I used sunny 16 rule and fought the waves to maintain a set distance from the surfer to keep her in focus.

11-13 août : péninsule de Bukit : de plage en plage

Pandawa Beach : ma première a été une plage tout au sud, à la façade artificielle et bétonnée, et à l'accès payant. Tout ça pour y voir des Japonais patauger dans vingt centimètres d'eau à la recherche de poissons illusoires, ridiculement affublés de gilets de sauvetage ouverts sur des bedaines blanchâtres et proéminentes. Ma première fut aussi courte que peu agréable.

Bingin Beach : ma seconde a été LA plage des surfeurs. Des corps hâlés et parfaitement proportionnés se baladent cheveux longs au vent, sur les rythmes de musique lounge diffusées par les paillotes de plage - qui n'ont de paillote que le nom, au vu des prix exorbitants qu'elles proposent. Faune surfaite, mais drôle à observer. En fin de journée, alors que le soleil s'étire sur l'horizon, la mer se retire, dévoilant une dentelle de bosses et de trous - piscines naturelles qui font le bonheur des enfants Nusa Dua Beach : ma troisième est la seule à l'est de ce tour d'horizon, et la plus huppée. Nous sommes les uniques propriétaires de paréos à même le sol, cernés et dévisagés par une armadas de transats. Aurions-nous déniché le Saint-Tropez de Bali? Nous préférons lire vautrés dans l'eau, car le soleil tape dur et la marée est si basse qu'il faudrait marcher bien longtemps avant de pouvoir tremper plus qu'un genou ! Balangan Beach : ma dernière est loin, très loin derrière bosses, trous et cailloux qui entaillent les pieds nus. Nous cherchions de quoi manger, et finirons par élire domicile dans la piscine privée du bar de plage lounge - moyennant une petite négociation, et un mojito coco délicieux. La meilleure piscine du monde est évidemment de celles qui donnent sur la mer :-)

Today has been the first day of surfing within our 10 days of ISA training and after I got out of the water my injured shoulder hurt so much, I cannot even really lift my arm right now. So I finally went to see a doctor and got an x-ray done. He wasn’t 100% sure about the result. If I’m lucky it’s just the muscle, if I’m very unlucky I have a fracture. I’ll know for sure later tonight or tomorrow.. Whatever it is I’m obviously not gonna be able to surf for the rest of my Bali time so I won’t be able to get my ISA surf instructor certificate plus I cannot do the only thing I basically went travelling for which is surfing. Which obviously sucks big time.😕 I can still finish it somewhere else within 1 year though which should not be the problem considering I’m going to Australia next. On a positive note: It looks that against my expectations I might still be able to pass the lifesaving part as I already managed to do the swimming and board rescue yesterday – under a lot of pain but I still made it somehow. And I also passed the interning part which then would only leave me with only having to finish the surfing part which is the easiest part to get done later as you can just send in videos of your surfing. So well, right now I’m not in the best mood to be honest but I guess in a situation like this noone would be.
