#captain harlock #space pirate captain harlock #spch #eo ssx #tochiro oyama #digital #art #sketchbook #basically just. switching the need for therapy over to tochiro #my main thought for how this shifts characterization/crew dynamics is that #tochiro ofc knows more about how the ship works on a technical level but isn't as natural a leader as harlock is #but the arcadia (w harlock inhabiting it) is more willing to spring into action from an earlier point #so it's more evident that *something* is up with the ship #i have even more thoughts but i'll spare people till the next post (unless someone asks about them)

So... Harlock basically pulled a siren kind of move. Started singing to the mazone, mazone are like "Duuuude! Your voice is pretty~!", luring them in, and then goes PEW PEW!! Zaps them!

Like how sirens sing to attract sailors before killing and/or eating them. Badass!

Like, he's clearly singing here. His mouth is open during the turnaround shot and before shooting. Only thing preventing proper lip sync is 1.) the fact the turnaround is all zoomed in so no room to paint details like that on the cel, and 2.) budget constraints ig. But his mouth being open then DOES imply that he's singing Mukashi Mukashi, just saying lol.

"How th' fuck did you get on our ship?" He's as baffled as he is pissed, already aiming the barrel of his gun at the stranger that had somehow boarded the Aurora without any of the crew noticing. To be honest, he's normally the type to shoot first and ask questions later, his trigger finger already itching - They don't call him Gunpowder Tim for nothing. But he also didn't want the others to lecture him about failing to get any information out of an intruder, so he held his fire for now. Shooting just one person wasn't enough fun to make it worth the trouble, anyways.

They didn't even look like much of a threat - honestly, they just looked like a regular human, something that was almost more unusual at this point, given the things he'd seen in the vast expanse of space. No mechanical parts, no alien traits, no obvious weapons, nothing. Just what the hell was going on here? Mechanical eyes watched them closely, just waiting for any sudden movements.

"Answer me, or shit's gonna get ugly real quick."

I was wondering when the dub of Arcadia of My Youth was made and apparently it was commissioned by Toei itself back in 1987 and a heavily edited version was released on vhs under the "Just For Kids" banner by Celebrity Home Entertainment. Same company that released shows like Sherlock Hound and The Bluffers under that same banner. Weird choice of movie to release for a kid demographic but ok.

But aside from that, at least they kept the original names intact, but Tochiro's voice sounds like a modern day text to speech, like the kind you hear in those Reddit vids where a robot reads AskReddit posts lol.

Especially the way he says "Don't die". He says it like goddamned Google Translate's tts.

And apparently, the English dub of the 2013 film as well as the Viz dub of the anime changed Tochiro's name to a more "American" sounding one, which ignores the fact he's canonically Japanese and even Arcadia of My Youth points that out via a flashback to his and Harlock's WWII era ancestors.

#i do find it interesting how harlock's ancestor was basically fighting in the war purely out of obligation #like 'i hate this war it's senseless and my country's ideology is rancid af but i gotta protect my country ig *groans*'#kinda like present day harlock when he was in the earth army working in an alien occupation prior to becoming a space pirate #the acting in the english dub in general's pretty bad #ended up switching to a fansub instead

sry im like willing myself to get up and brush my teeth and all that but im literally like Maybe i should finally actually listen to tbi. as in the bifrost incident not traumatic brain injury which it would be insane if there was a mechs album named traumatic brain injury.
