Day one of weaving with invasive botanicals! I almost got my egg basket done but I’ll need to backtrack a little in the center tomorrow morning. I was a little too impatient at the end of the day, but I do have A Plan to fix it! Hoping to learn how to make cordage as well as a second smaller basket if we have the time and materials. My hands are tired lol

I love the process of figuring out how to make my lizard’s tank more interesting and comfortable without being able to communicate with him. I wove this free form cave/tunnel for my lizard thinking he would like the extra coverage with some of the heat from the heat lamp dappling through. It has two openings so he could sleep or walk through it.

….and he hated it. He wouldn’t go near it most of the time, and when he did he looked uncomfortable and wouldn’t linger. He is generally pretty change adverse, so I kept it in the tank for a couple of weeks thinking he might warm up to it, but he never did so I took it out.
From watching him (grumpily) interact with it, the biggest issue seemed to be that the rattan I used wasn’t smooth, so he was getting poked when walking along the walls. I ended up hot gluing cardboard along the bottom edges, the openings, and a few bands along the top, which made it look a little less nice but was definitely better in texture. It also seemed like it was almost too open, so not good for sleeping without him feeling exposed. I decided to move it to a different place in the tank and lean it against a rock, so that the top of the cave was lower.
And these changes worked! Within the first week with he was hesitant but not nearly as agitated, and by the second week he’s spent most days hanging out under it.

Something about making things with your hands for a little creature living in your house and seeing them sleep and feel safe in it…literally the best

my partner's granddad (his mom's dad) used to weave baskets for personal use and my mom-in-law still uses some of them, including this one which was completely destroyed at the top. cannot describe how honoured i was to be asked if i could restore it. also cannot describe the feeling of working on this - being able to use everything i know to take care of this heirloom and make it functional again - using my hands today where his hands once were to create something that would be used for decades to come- time is a spiral etc

Baskets exist to store, to carry, to hold. Sometimes they hold imminently practical things, while sometimes occasionally they hold something far more elusive - a heartfelt incantation woven into undulating rows of pine & sinew.
