Happy International Bat Appreciation Day! Often unfairly maligned, bats are an important part of diverse ecosystems worldwide. They eat harmful insects, pollinate plants- including rare nocturnal ones- and are generally just important little guys to have around. Thanks, bats! 🦇✨

Some brief fun facts about Mexican free-tailed bats! 🦇
Their colonies are the biggest of any mammal in the world! The largest colony, at Bracken Cave in Texas, is home to over 30 million bats! The Bracken Cave colony is a maternity colony, meaning that the females go there to have pups, typically at the end of June, but they'll roost there from March to October. They're a migratory species meaning they don't hibernate, and typically roost in more arid caves, so the fungus that causes White Nose Syndrome doesn't affect their populations as much.
That being said, if you want a really neat experience and you're going to be in the Texas hill country, make your way out to Concan, Tx. It's close to Bracken Cave. In Concan, you can find Frio Cave, home to the second largest mammal colony in the world! It's also a maternity colony. You can watch the nightly bat flight at Bracken Cave or the Frio Cave, but I always find it to be a much better viewing experience at the latter. Plus, the guide has been doing it since before I was born!
Mexican free-tailed bats are incredibly ecologically important. They keep insect populations throughout much of North and South America in check, provide pollination to a variety of plants, and their guano is a valuable fertilizer.
Please take a moment out of your day to appreciate these amazing little creatures!!! :)

For #InternationalBatAppreciationDay 🦇:
Art Inspiring Science: The Moche Bat
Tumblr media
“The CMA’s bat vessel has traits of the species Dr. Velazco studied. Made on Peru’s north coast by an artist of the ancient Moche or Mochica culture (moe-chay, moe-cheek-ah) (AD 200–850), the vessel inspired him to name the species Histiotus mochica or, colloquially, the Moche leaf-eared bat. He did so to recognize the knowledge of Indigenous peoples and to honor the Moche and their connection to the natural world. Indeed, as he notes in a publication about the species, the bat vessel is so accurately depicted that it allowed precise identification of an animal previously unknown to science and thus stands as a testament to the Moche’s observational skills and profound interest in nature.”

My YCH "Relaxing in the armchair" was a hit. Originally there were only 10 slots, but upon request I reopened another 10 slots which were promptly filled. Now it is definitively closed.
