Today is my family holiday, “Shakespeare Day”**. Our tradition involves Battenberg cake and watching some version of a Shakespeare play we haven’t seen.
Problem: I am broke and couldn’t buy ingredients.
Solution: Root through everything in the kitchen.
And so this year my cake is actually a cake mix, a spice cake mix with a sell by date of 2013 that came out a bit, um, flat. The colors of the checkerboard pattern are green and a sort of orangy brown, because I was out of food coloring. Instead of apricot preserves I used jar of Mom’s grape jelly she forgot to date when she made it. And as for the marzipan, well it’s sell by date was 2018, so it was a bit gooey until some corn starch came to the rescue.
Can I call it Battenberg cake anyway???
I hope I can find a Shakespeare play to watch, but preferably not a miserable one. Today is also now the anniversary of Mom’s stroke, and since she wasn’t well when we talked I could use something that won’t depress me more….
** Why you ask? Well, it’s too long a story, but it begins with a Jasper Fforde novel. I was reading the book aloud, and we were all a bit curious about what the heck Battenberg cake was and what was up with Hamlet being addicted. Curiosity led to a whim which became a tradition.
