Is The Battle Rifle Dead?

Battle rifles are nothing new. When I think of a battle rifle, old M1 Garands, M14s as well as the FN FAL come to mind. The M1 Garand has been out of service since the 1960’s. The M14 actually had a very short life as a primary rifle before being replaced by the M16. The M14 however has still been used in limited situations since being replaced by the M16. I actually carried the M14 while serving in the Navy as we still used them for our topside ship watches. They’ve since been replaced by the M4 which is a shortened version of the M16. The M14 was also revived to do some limited work in the mountains of Afghanistan during the last couple of decades. The military needed a cartridge that could be more effective at distance like the 7.62 Nato round. The FN FAL was replaced many decades ago by more modern rifles that shoot the 5.56 Nato, but in many 3rd world countries as well as conflicts, the FN FAL is still being used.

So why exactly have these battle rifles been phased out? Even battle rifles like the FN FAL, which is a superb weapon system…the end is hear or very near for these rifles. The main reasons in my humble opinion have been 2 fold. The shear weight of these rifle platforms is way more than rifles like the M16 and M4 rifles. The M14 typically will weigh somewhere north of 12 pounds whereas your typical M16 will be as light as 7 pounds. One could also argue that the ergonomics of the M16 are far superior to any M14 configuration. At the end of the day, when you’re trekking through the woods or desert on foot…ounces equal pounds and pounds add up.

The second reason I do believe would have to be the cartridge, the cartridge weight as well as capacity. When rifles like the M16 were coming online, jungle warfare was at it’s height during the Vietnam war. Most engagements were of shorter distances and there was less need to a heavier projectile to inflict damage at a longer distance. Ammunition capacity was also a concern. A soldier could carry 30% more 5.56mm ammunition over 7.62Nato. Your standard capacity M16 magazine was 20 rounds at first, then later 30 rounds whereas the standard capacity M14 magazine was just 20 rounds at most. The ability to carry more ammo and provide suppressing fire for an extended amount of time won.

So even though the battle rifle is dead to modern militaries around the world, it still has a place in many of our hearts. And luckily for us, companies such as DSA and Springfield Armory still manufacture faithful reproductions of these iconic battle rifles, sans the fun switch of course. You can find these in different varieties over at Brownells. I’ve had for sometime now a Springfield M1A loaded model that I swapped out the plastic stock for a G.I. wood stock and scope setup. It’s been an awesome rifle! I’m hoping to one day add a version of the FN FAL made by DSA. They manufacture numerous variants of the iconic FAL with shorter/longer barrels, folding and fixed stocks.
