"Doubting" ll BBC Merlin x Arthur

Prompt: "I’m not the right person for you.” “You’re doing a bad job of convincing me of that.”

Description: Arthur , despite loving Merlin is having doubts about if he's the right person for Merlin.

Pairing: BBC Merlin x Arthur.

Warnings: Slight angst , but mostly tooth rotting fluff.

Arthurs POV:

It was currently early morning and the sun was just starting to rise and sunlight rays peak in through the velvet , lacey curtains. But I had been awake for at least a few hours now . The sleepless night came about by my thoughts , well more specifically about my servant Merlin . He’s quite wonderful even though he can be snarky and annoying at times , while our friendship runs deeper than most I sometimes get doubtful about our deep bond . Cause even though he's just a simple servant I feel as though I am not good enough for him and I as though I am not the right person for him.

But I fear that my pride will never admit let me admit that to him , at least I hope...

Knowing these feelings , these thoughts that are spiraling around my head , these doubts . I knew that I had to get them out somehow and it wasn’t gonna be easy for me . So I acted quickly by throwing the plush blanket off of me and hastily getting ready . Just as I reached the square it was full swing and it felt like every eye was on me , also the fact that I could feel the scorching summer sun engulfing my body , making droplets of sweat drop off the side of my temples . Luckily I had been able to get too where Merlin lived a without much trouble.

However , as I knocked Merlin wasn’t the one to answer the door . It was Gaius , out of the fact I don’t know him enough besides been the royal physician I momentarily paused . “Oh hello prince Arthur , can I do for you on this sweltering day?” Croaked out with a face twisted in a grimace “uh , well is Merlin here? , I needed to talk to him” “oh sorry sire , but I had JUST sent him to get me ingredients for some antidotes” the older man remarked while stirring a pot that sputtered and bubbled green sludge , I didn't dare ask what it was. "Oh , so the market is the best place where I’ll find him?” I asked with my hands on my hips , and with a nod from Gaius I head to the market.

As I head towards the market , I felt relief seeing the covers on the stall give me shade from the sweltering sun and not soon after arriving I see Merlin . He was talking to a vender who’s stall had plenty of herbs and glass vile bottles hanging from the side of the stall. "Hey , merlin!" I called out to him whilst I walked towards him , it took the third call for him to finally notice that I was trying to get his attention and almost instantly his face lit up as he in braced me into a hug , making me feel the slight tickle of herbs that he already had in his arms on my arm. "Pretty hot today , isn't it Arthur" the dark haired man remarked "I'll say so" I nod in agreement "so , umm what did you need me to do sire? merlin asked "well yes , I just want to talk to you about something important" "oh , is that so? , well we can talk on the way to my quarters as I needed to drop of some stuff that Gaius needed or we can talk after in a more private area , like your room?" "mmm , that would be ok" I said , confirming the plan . During the time that it took for us too get to Gaius and his place , we manage to flow into a range of topics , that's what I like about him , he knows how to how to have a good conversation .

When we got too his place we quickly dropped off the ingredients to a very thankful Gaius and left , as we were close to my room Merlin broke the silence “so now that we’re in a less populated place what did you want to talk about” I stop in my tracks , near my bedroom door and looked around to see if anyone can hear us “well , it’s important I would like too discuss this in my room” I whispered in his ear whilst opening the door . Just as I opened the door and we both entered, I instantly relaxed my shoulders whilst closing the door and without realising, I was hugging him I felt vulnerable in that moment like I was bleeding out and severely injured . “Are you ok , sire?” Merlin asked , his voice dripping with concern “no , I’m not I have had many thoughts and feelings” I started to say but then pondered off feeling ashamed of myself and my vulnerability, of the fact that I’m gonna be king one day and I’m acting like this? ridiculous. Somehow we were still hugging , what felt like a eternity must’ve been seconds , but as we still hugged I heard a faint scoff and my heat sank a little but before I could say or do anything Merlin piped up “ well would you like to talk about it?” . That when I finally let go “yes I would” I practically mumbled out feeling all sorts of emotions.

A few minutes go by and we were sitting on the floor , our backs were facing my bed and we were holding hands “so did you specifically want to talk something?” Merlin inquired while fiddling with my rings on my fingers , I sigh while leaning my head back “yes , I’ve been meaning to talk to you about this for a while now” I feel scared about how he gonna react but I continue “I - I feel as though I’m not the right person for you” as I finished speaking all I could hear is the slight breathing of Merlin and I and silence , it felt threatening and as I braced for impact of whatever snarky comment Merlin would come up with. But at he silence was interrupted by Merlin hugging me tightly whilst whispering

“You’re doing a bad job at convincing me of that”.
