France is so beautiful to hide the ugliness inside. honhonhon It's a pety bitch and we love him
Motherfucker made a deal with the devil for sure ... Though now I am wondering if that is a thing in French culture/folklore, like, do we have some prominent devil deal story over there? Getting sidetracked.
But YES, we love him for being petty! He is capable of both being a genuine romantic and kind soul and also the MOST MASSIVE BITCH EVER who wants to see the world BURN for his entertainment and ego. Love that for him. I mean, look at this poll for my latest AU FrUK subplot. Card-carrying messy bitch who lives for drama.
But I will seriously say that he is not uniquely ugly on the inside, most Hetalia characters (and indeed most characters period) are super sucky in some ways and genuinely cool people in others. I am as francophobic as the next person, but his beauty is not hiding more uglyness than Turkey's or Spain's beauty - or any of the Nordic's or Russia's or China's, depends on who is your type.
I mean, in the AU scenario I linked alone, there are like. At least three major cases of Everyone Sucks Here. Yes, François' prioritizing drama over his best friend's future, bc all the pettyness got her basically fiancé to sleep with someone for blackmail and he is not doing shit to stop HIS future husband from making another friend's life hell for the petty bullshit. But Gavin MacAllister being hellbent on not letting François marry an Englishman that Fran clearly doesn't seem to abhor, seems determined to have a fun marriage with, is also just. Ugly as fuck behaviour-wise. And Arthur trying to make everyone else pay more than hell for bothering him... Honestly, if he hadn't pissed off Gavin and my Irish boys before François based on snobbish reasons, Arthur would be the least of an asshole, because Gavin's being an entitled prick and François is encouraging it. He is not uniquely terrible, really not, so ... not that much beauty required, really. Hima just hates me specifically by making a Frenchman this heavenly handsome.

bea the amount of au's you have is absolutely insane and I love it so much keep going keep collecting aus become god
I am AU George, the creator of worlds.
No, but seriously, thank you. I am very dear of my blorbos and I am very fond of history, and when you combine them, two things happen:
1) You get very emotional things that exist specifically at the crosssection of "My fuckers" and "These historical circumstances". It can be jokes, love affairs, feuds - But it's something that can only happen under a certain set of circumstances and my fuckers either going along with them, playing with them or outright subverting them. It's basically me trying to find a way to house historical in-jokes and loaded clichéd images and also relationships that just won't happen in canon.
2) I feel most history may not be best understood, but certainly best experienced by making it come alive. By creating historical AUs, I get a chance to put into practice all the things I read about and learn about when I come across history. It allows me to ask questions, to unearth and lay bare connections and drive me to learn more to be accurate. History is, at the end of the day, not numbers or concepts but people. And that is what I love about history.

@siphilemon replied to your post “ist nobler to post a fic and leave it unfinished, or to have never...”
Middle option: have one fic where the chapters are just the fics you started but can't finish
that would be the most painful fanfic to read ever, ow, but at the same time I guess at least there’d be a taste of what could’ve been?

Pairing: FrUK
Title: At the crossroads
(Sorry I am NOT creative at all)
Anon, I love you, I am kissing you on the mouth.
Send Me A Title And A Pairing And I Will Write The Summary Of A Fic I'll Never Write
In fact, anon, I love you so much you're getting twice the content, canonverse version and one LFLS version, which is my main AU (Like Father Like Son)
#1: From the Norman Invasion over key precipitious points in the Hundred Years War over France's not-very-successful attempts to help out Irish factions in Rebelling (Willamite Wars and United Irishmen Rebellion, anyone), the Napoleonic Wars, France's defeat in 1871, the Entente and finally to 1945 - This fic would examine a handful of crossroads that had England's and France's future up in the air and them re-examining their relationship.
#2: From rebellious Teenager lovers to two gangster bosses making their bones, this fic would examine François' courtship of Arthur and Arthur trying to figure out how he wants to combine what the heart wants with what the head knows to be right. Once T(w)eenage lovers, their relationship had considerably cooled after Arthur's father died and he entered the sharktank of Europe's underground. When François makes his own first clumsy steps at powerplay with the help of the equally green behind the ears Sicilian Michele, he and Arthur find themselves on opposite sides. However - This intrigues François' all the more and after he saved his skin by throwing Michele under the bus, which was by far not the first deathnail for their disastrous affair, he is on the prowl for a new adventure - And cracking Arthur, who's trying to fill his father's shoes, sounds just like the past time for him.

Which characters description do you keep faithful to canon and which ones don't in your fics?
Huh, interesting question.
I do try to keep everyone as faithful as possible while also adjusting for the circumstances of the AU. I would say most of the characters are close to canon, so I'll list the exceptions instead.
England does my damn head in, because Arthur contains such multitudes in canon. He's insecure, whiny, self-depreciating, pretty pathetic, easy to anger. He's also snarky, confident in his power, reasonable, crafty, and enduring. I feel with him you have to pick the aspects that suit whatever enviroment you pluck him into. I am always drawn to the more imperial sides of aph characters that indeed used to be empires, the power and all the downsides that come with achieving it. Plus, in LFLS, he's an antagonist to my Irish kids, so a focus on ambition and endurance, plus a sense of entitlement ("I worked this hard and committed so many horrendous things, I deserve it at least paying off!") suits him well. He's still stuffy and a bit of an eccentric weirdo, but I do focus more on the ruthless and stiff gentlemanly side of his personality.
For the same focus on Imperialism, my Gilbert is not as much of a cloud-cuckoo-lander. Mind you, he is still daring and likes the sound of his own voice too much and is much less concerned about safety and carefulness than Ludwig, but modelling him on the Militarism that I always knew Prussia the state to be most famous for and him being the main reason that German qualities are 'punctuality' and 'neatness' ... yeah, that will produce a little bit of a more rules-stickler Gilbert.
Romano. Oh baby. I shamelessly admit that I am trying to give this man his dignity back. Plus, in LFLS, he's the head of the family crime business, not Feliciano, so he doesn't necessarily have the some complexes about his brother always doing better and everyone liking his brother better. Don't worry though, he still envies Feliciano for being everyone's angel and the usual older brother complex of you having to hold back bc you are 'older' and 'more mature'. He's still somewhat of a fraidycat and still likes to lean back more than working, but he fills his role as a boss well and knows the value of hard work. So yeah, he's more like the South Italians I met along the years while still retaining core characteristics like his temper.

"#RRRRRRRRRRRRR CIAO RAGAZZO"
wait is this really a thing people say in italian? like calling people ragazzo or ragazza? i always thought it was some weird 2012 fanfic thing
To be fair, I am not entirely sure it's a common way to uh ... well, borderline catcall someone, which is what I'd call this if I used it on a man in real life.
But yeah, raggazzi or the shortened version of "raga" is definitelly used to adress a group of people and ragazzo & ragazza can be used for single people, I think.
Also, I more often heard the term "fidanzato/a", but "ragazzo/a" can also be used to mean boyfriend or girlfriend

SicIre for the ask game?
... And also Spamano, because I need to know your take on them.
Hehehehe hihihihi hohoho tank you dear!
SicIre
Tumblr media
The first song in my SicIre playlist is "Jemand da draußen" by Broilers which is SUCH a beautiful soulmate song. Bc it is like "Maybe this works out for one night, maybe this works out for an entire lifetime, but someone is out there who feels the same as me, someone is out there who's supposed to meet me and create something wonderful from it and us. I'm ready for it." They are SO made for each other.
"Dying in each other's arms" is reserved for family, I think, like. I love their love and its importance, but I think either way that some bonds go even deeper and more instinctually so. Them dying in each other's arms wouldn't be as heartbreaking and feel as 'right' as some other combinations, both Hetaverse and LFLS.
I was torn between "blood and guts and cannibalism" and "they should get weirder with it", but I think we haven't hit the ceiling with them yet. I looove the weird Incorporation thing they got going on in LFLS (Michele, cannibal and son of the anthropophage supreme, always bites, always eats, but he is so fearful about biting Harry. He doesn't want to eat him. Harry however, who's at best an auto-cannibalist and doesn't really lend himself to meaty incorporation, wants Michele to rip chunks out of him. He wants to be wholly his). But we can do better.
Spamano
Tumblr media
Themst ...
I love how they each see each other as a better person than themselves. Lovino feels like he is never enough, never 'right' and loves how kind and loving and optimistic Antonio is. And Antonio thinks he's living in his own dream world often, which can make him harsh and cruel and unrealistic about life. Lovino, to him, is realistic and strongwilled and so, so, so beautifully loving and responsible to those around him.
I also like how clearly, in canon, some of Romano's issues that Spain's love helps remedy are clearly Spain's fault LMAO. Always comparing him to Golden Child Feli is gonna give a man some issues.
I just looove what they do to each other. Antonio's 'I want to be a better person to be deserving of your love' and Lovino's 'I want to love myself more to not make a mockery of your love to me'.
But I could also always get weirder with them. However, maybe I just need to accept that not every ship can be Francetto or FrUK or even [cut part here for being too unrelated to the topic at hand].

I'm not going on anon, and also not telling anyone to continue a chain.
Top 3 fics of yours that you wish everyone would read—GO!
Thank you, Darling! I will copy the explanations for the fics from a similiar ask I did already, if possible.
1.Perché in Sicilia i morti dovrebbe morire I am aware that there is technically a typo in here, but I don’t have the book I quoted around, so I don’t know if the typo is already in the source material. Either way, do you like ghosts? Do you like folklore? Do you like places haunted by the terrible things they’ve seen, objects filled with the absentminded crooked intentions of their owner? Do you like childhood friends, who are the only friends to trust each other with their terrible childhoods, but it doesn’t solve anything? Perché is the story you want. Herakles and Michele are sneaking around Michele’s house during a power outage, talking about the recent past and ranting about the distant one, while the are some parts in between those that are unspeakable. It weaves the past of Sicily on a whole, especially Palermo’s and its hinterland, together with the fate of the Vento family and clothes the terrors of Michele’s own psyche into the familiar appearance of the collective Sicilian folklore. Also, if you like two mediterranean guys being way too coddly and touchy-feely, you can give this one a go as well.
2. No Rest For The Wicked Tu non fermami se capita! Lo sai che il mare mi agita! Ti canterò di quelle notti ad orienteeee, di quella luna che danzava tra i bazaaaaar! If you are a fan of self-indulgent fanfictions, this is the most unashamedly self-indulgent thing I ever wrote.* This story has everything: The Chaos Seven (Team Sicily and Team Ireland) go on a Turkey Vacay with the Greeks and Turks. Paddy hits his head. Harry and Soph are 100% on their bullshit as if no one else is around. Argueing. Cursing. Flirting. Hera and Sadık so deeply in love in their twisted and yet so mundane way. Italian Music and Sexy Dancing. Bridal Carrying. Please go and read it, 🌀 ohhh you want to read about TurGre and SicIre and the O'Connels soooo badly. 🌀 *All my other OC fics don’t count, because I avoid tagging them Hetalia as much as I can, so I don’t expect anyone to read it. Even if they are tagged hetalia, no one specifically looks for my OC ships, so while I am glad for every reader, I never write with any in mind.
3. On the King's mind Am I very proud of this fic? Not really, but it's grown on me ever since I wrote it. I really like the story-in-a-story, mostly because it hits a lot of beats of the LFLS mainstory: The Anglo-Irish Antagonism, Robert and Charlie's enmity in particular, Charlie and Harry's friendship and. well. there's. SicIre :]. If you don't mind very stereotypical High Fantasy stuff, with a less conventional King/Adviser constellation, you should definitely give this one a go. I also just enjoy Harry, (High) King of Ireland a lot. We love an underdog, but sometimes I just want my kids in the cool positions of power they could definitely fill.

I'm curious. i might have already asked and forgot but
what made you ship Ireland x Sicily?
Short answer: I had an Ireland OC and my friend had a Sicily OC and we obviously had to mash 'em together.
Long answer: I did a little bit of research back then and Ireland and Sicily have a lot of superficial similiarities. Both predominantly Catholic, both predominantly rural for most of their existence, both having a strong sense of identity (be it something that only emerged in the last few centuries, because the (ethnic) Nationstate is a very young concept) and both having a long history of foreign rule. They're used as examples of backwardness and barbarism of neighbour elites, often ones they are politically/economically tied to.
I also, way back when, started a little AU story that was supposed to be a simple Art Trade for my friend whose Sicily OC it originally was. This has since spiralled wildly out of control and writing that AU has become my main hobby ten years later. During which that Sicily OC became mine, since my friend moved on from the fandom.
And I just ... I am very specifically in love with my Ireland and my Sicily, but you can imagine canon Ireland and Romano for all you want, if you want to get it. They're just so made for each other - loving, kind, and warm, embracing the whole world. Take no shit but do no harm. They also share a certain dark and fatalistic sense of humor, love to lament but ah well, in the end you make do.
I just love how Ireland and Sicily fit together like puzzle pieces. Sicily, shunted from the world stage in Hetalia, no longer even a prized crown jewel, a caged bird, just seen as a burden who happens to have a pretty house. And then Ireland comes along and says "I see you". Sicily doesn't even have to explain the years of hardship, the degradation, the loss of yourself as you see your people drift away because there's nothing left for them here. Ireland knows, but they don't have much of a shared past so there isn't baggage of millennia of sharing history. And Sicily understands too, understands how hard the price for freedom is and how desperate one is for it after being kicked down on. They work without words. They are each other's safe haven, gladly finding solace in their mirror image. Ireland has someone who looks up to him without being bitterly disappointed; without obscuring the man behind the myth.
And oagh, in LFLS. Harry and Michele see themselves as someone who's hard to love, who's too flawed to genuinely keep anyone around, and they effortlessly take each other's hands and don't let go. They're charmed by how stubborn they are in their own ways, they see how hard they work and how much they love their family and friends. They see someone who's beaming with pride, who knows their own worth, but also isn't so far up their own ass that they can't laugh about themselves. SicIre are just old men at heart. They are the perfect ship for sitting on the porch together and bickering about the neighbours and expressing their love in little sappy, gestures. They're just ... they're just so alike and yet different enough in how they express themselves that it never gets boring.
Also, also, just looook at them.

I am comfortable enough in my Italian to call myself trilingual.
My last grade on something was a A- (13 points) - we were supposed to write a pop-history magazine article for our presentation topic and I honestly had a lot of fun with mine!
Me and one more friend are the entirety of the SicIre and GreSic Tag on ao3 and I love it. I get that as far as canon goes, I am not really rarepair cheerleader number one, but boy, do I have eclectic OC taste and I am right for it.

Now that you mentioned it I am very intrigued by your human Hetalia au, go on
Thank you very much anon!
So. Basic concept: A world very much the same as ours, but acting mostly hidden from the public eye, are national crime syndicates in every country. Pretty much all are spearheaded by the boss of one noteable family that ensured that position some generations ago (those bosses are the Hetalia nations, ordinary Humans here) and two right hands. The AU is called Like Father Like Son.
Now, these syndicates are very much globally connected and when it comes to each other, act less than actual organized crime organisations in real life and more like monarchies or other types of state conducting diplomacy. Also, as is very unlikely for real life and much more common for royality, the bosses have usually inherited the business and had no option to opt out/felt it was the right thing to do. This is nuanced along the way, but again, stark difference to the volatile infighting and general hierarchies from real life organized crime (where the successor is probably NOT the 17 year old son, but a trusted right hand).
But they are, at the end of the day, gangsters. They fight for their own survival and supreme status within the other criminals in their own country and amongst their peers. (Alexa, play 741 Millionen by Tüsn). They don't represent states or governments or even people. They're in it because power is nice and the sunk-cost fallacy is too great to get out.
But because I am a history nerd, they still reflect certain phases and struggles and ideas about nationhood, like their Hetalia counterparts actually would. And here is where it gets interesting.
The protagonists of the AUs mainseries, called also called Like Father Like Son with the subtitle Sangue cattivo non mente on ao3, are the Irish and the Sicilians. So it's my Hetalia OCs (though I borrowed the Sicilian from a friend) Harry O'Connel and Michele Vento, plus Harry's younger sister Sophie O'Connel, and the Human-from-the-start right hands Paddy O'Neill, Charlie Higgins and Marco & Lorenzo Bontade.
And if you're looking for an Irish villain, where do you look to? England. Always the Brits. 'May the enemies of Ireland never meet a friend'. Which is why Arthur Kirkland, along with his right hands Robert Bailey and Tahir Rashid, serves as antagonist to the Irish in many stories. And of course, this makes it easy to present the fight as underdogs vs powerful evil empire, along the line of actual historical conflict. (I am oversimplifying, but we aren't here to argue details right now and in broad strokes, it IS right). If the reader has an inkling of Irish or British history, they will see the parallels. I, as the author, work it into metaphors by the narrative entity (usually occupying one character's POV, tho not to be confused with the character being the narrator). I work it into the general themes, with characters talking about history or historical/cultural backdrops. And of course, by that the characters themselves draw the parallels and pull on old stereotypes to rage against their enemies. Arthur likes to pull out the old stereotypes of the Irish being a belligerent, backward and unreasonable race when he paints Harry as a troublemaker. Harry will paint Arthur a tyrant who can't stand to see another man free when he feels entitled to his property and life. It's so enticing to believe that you know where to stand, to know where's right on the merits of history and the real world alone.
But as soon as you take a step back, you realize how they merely use something bigger and greater than themselves to fight their petty wars. Paddy and Charlie rail against the English after they've kidnapped Harry, they say Arthur thinks the world should grovel before him because it's his righ as an Englishman. But they're never alluding to anything bigger than themselves; yes, Irish are being kicked down, but it's just them. And sure, they may say an Irishman doesn't give up and that's what the English shall see, but it's the rhetoric of revolution without its goals. There's no British threat to Ireland - no fight they can align themselves with, because Arthur certainly isn't aligned with any either. Truly, if they were so committed to it, they would look with more sympathy to Tahir, whose parents came from Pakistan in the 1970s. They'd appeal to him, see the parallels of history with Ireland and the British Colony of India. But while the English tyranny rhetoric is usually reserved for white Arthur and Robert, at the end of the day, Tahir's also an 'English pedant' and haughty prick to them. And Tahir, similiarly, doesn't have much sympathy for the Irish, seeing them as annoying obstacles to their business dealings. He's in this to give his family a better life, he knows there is nothing grand about their enterprise. They all know that. In quiet moments, amongst themselves, they even express it. The farce they play; that the ideals they want to hold they betray; that they are a cancer on the people and country they love.
And I just. I love that. I love how it still has the themes one can ask in more substantial explorations of Hetalia - the constraints of free will, bearing the sins and burdens of the past, how much you can be an individual and how much you are a role. I love how it makes them true individuals, in the end, how it employs history as something that is interpreted from the witnesses we have to the past and told through our own eyes. How it seemingly creates this parallel to real history, but when one steps back, it shows that it's play pretend and it makes the reader sympathize while also keep its distance at times, enjoying a story that is fundamentally about a lot of people making the wrong decisions and living with the consequences. It's a tragedy, a meta-level of mourning - with none of that hope for a future that any reading of history can have.
Thank you for coming to my Ted-talk. I am currently rewriting the main series, because what is up on AO3 was written by a fourteen to sixteen year old and therefore, isn't very good. However, you can still check out my other writing (and the not very good mainseries) here. I also like to make lots and lots of AUs with the many Human characters and the Hetalia characters where they're not burdened by being organized criminals. You can find my ramblings about many of these AUs on my sideblog @i-centri-degli-universi . You will also find a few written works for some AUs on the ao3 already linked.
Thank you for your attention. I hope you have a grand day, anon, as well as everyone who read through this.

OH WAIT NO I FUCKED UO SORRY I MISUNDERSTOOD THE ASSIGNEMENT
Sicire: Yo does it count as a crush if i want to tear their throat out with my teeth???
I mean ... I mean, I guess I /could/ make this work somehow, but it'd be such a contortion of the characters that it would pain me.
SicIre is simply not made for enemies to lovers. Not in the actual sense of it - Sure, I have at least one Romeo and Juliette dynamic in my neverending AU pile, but that isn't enemies to lovers.
Like, I know Irish Problems may superficially LOOK like this, with Harry being so angry over how he's charmed by Michele. I know that Harry was exactly that in the old version of IP that is up on ao3. But the thing is - That's not it. That is why I am rewriting the old version. Harry is angry over Michele's charm because he feels it's a weakness he can't compensate. He envies him for a masculinity and personality he will never possess, Harry thinks. Harry wants to be like Michele, because then his life would be so much easier. He gets irritated and starts snapping and verbally biting because he always had to stand his ground, his entire life. It's reflex to him, it's not wanting to be taken advantage of. It has nothing to do with attraction, Harry doesn't think about being attracted to Michele (or Michele to him). Until Charlie is like "HE IS FLIRTING WITH YOU, IT IS NOT MINDGAMES!!! HE IS FLIRTING!!! WITH YOU!!!". And while the aggression doesn't go wholly poof during business negotiations, things suddenly clear up for Harry. He doesn't fight that explanation! He doesn't hesitate thinking that Michele works on him because he's into dudes! He likes realizing that!!! He likes to lean into that with Michele, now less concerned about his self-image and more confident in his skills. He is not conflicted about liking Michele romantically - he is conflicted about liking Michele as a business partner. Once that is cleared up, literally no reason to hate himself anymore to being attracted to an attractive man. Time to play this game for two.
