Yet many of us live in a chronic state of sarcopenia, age related loss of muscle mass, very common in 50 years and older. The delicate balance between hormonal signaling of muscle growth and break down becomes disrupted as we age and is accelerated by immobility, unbalanced diet, inflammation and severe stress. This can manifest as a decrease of strength and stamina. The good news is there are steps you can take as you age to prevent, if not reverse sarcopenia. . . . What are the steps? 1. Resistance training such as lifting weights, aerobic exercises, and walking. 2. Get your nutrition back on point! One way is to increase protein, which will send signals to muscle tissue to strengthen. As we age our protein consumption becomes higher because the muscles develop protein resistance. The amino acid Leucine has been found to be very important to muscle growth stimulation. This amino acid can be found in whole foods such as eggs, fish and meat. 3.
