I (25m) am a Gaslighter. I didn't know. But I was gaslighting my girlfriend (f23) of 3 years.

My girlfriend and I recently separated. We're taking time to feel and think and for her to see if she can trust me to keep bettering myself and actually putting in the effort to act on my words to better our relationship.

I recently came across a post of hers that one of her friends said after reviewing a conversation we had, that I was gaslighting her.

I looked it up, but some of the examples of a gas lighter didn't seem like me.

So, I asked her. If I'm going to continue to improve myself so that I can have a chance at coming back the best that I can be, this is what she said.

"I would go for the party as a recent example. Or any time you've tried to make me believe I'm so frequently inconsiderate. Where me staying the night so no one has to pause their good time and you don't have to come out, getting a ride both ways, is me being inconsiderate. Where me going to one party once or maybe twice a year, but generally almost always turning them down, is me trying to make up for lost time when I AM in my early 20s. What time have I really lost. And where does one party make a lifestyle? Then making me feel irresponsible and like an asshole for my ride drinking more than me, and telling me to get an Uber. If trying to make someone believe or feel they are or have done something shitty that they aren't or haven't isn't Gaslighting, I don't really know how else to define it.

Or where you've phrased things in a way to make me think I was behaving like I didn't love you anymore because I didn't do extra things like giving you massages

That's trying to make someone believe they did it didn't do something for your own benefit

Manipulating someone's thoughts or feelings for your own benefit is Gaslighting "

I had no idea that's what I was doing. To me, I felt justified in the things I was saying because I was upset and worried for her saftey.

I realize now, that while it's okay to be upset with the circumstances of the party, and that it's ok to be worried about your loves safety, that it's not ok to manipulate because you are upset.

I felt that I was being honest. I felt that I was being reasonable. But I was doing this to her because I was upset.

I'm going to see my therapist Thursday, and I'm trying to get in sooner too.

How do I stop gaslighting? How do I stop controlling and manipulating? These are things I never wanted to do to her.
