"For my brothers with Daughters, I call This..." Whenever I think about the origin of my journey into photography, I remember the 2 main reasons for picking up a camera. One was to document the sneakers I wore daily with the intention of sharing the photos on a popular online sneaker forum called NikeTalk. The second and more important reason was to document my family. After realizing that my parents photo albums have a significant gap in photos of me and my brother, I vowed to take on the responsibility of documenting my family.

So naturally (especially in this modern world we're living in) when I became a father 10 years ago, I was reminded of that vow. There's very few people if any at all that I enjoy taking photos of more than my own daughters!

I mean, it's super obvious why, right? My babies are the most beautiful people on this planet. With smiles that melt my heart and hugs that would make a grizzly bear jealous. Lol. I've made it my business to get millions of photos of them not only on film but on my phone and digital cameras as well.

I've been a photographer for 15 years now! In that time I've gotten a large sum of photos of my family and the ones of my babies are easily my favorite. I tend not to share photos of them too often because I see them as treasures that should be protected at all cost. So I say that to say, this post is being made with the intention of giving you, the reader a treat! Lol

It was 2015 when I first picked up an analog camera. Six years after deciding I wanted to be a photographer. At the time my oldest was a curious 1 year old. It's been an honor to watch her grow into the lovely young woman she is becoming.

The youngest (the leader of our pack) wasn't even thought of yet, but she caught up and became manager of the family very quickly. Lmao.

Some of my photos are blurry, and some were exposed wrong, but that's ok! At the very least I know I have the memories of my children in my head. These prints that accompany my thoughts are just a bonus!!

As I begin finalizing my current long fic, Maybe We Were Always Meant To Be I have come to the realization that I have 20 one-shot/significantly shorter story ideas for Hangster. I know which one I’ll write first, but after that I have no idea. I’m going to list the top 10 I’m most excited to write below with a brief synopsis and you can vote in the poll for which one you’d like to read the most!

(I may or may not follow this, but it’ll give me an idea of what people would like to read and a starting point😄)

Story Ideas:

The Ball’s in Your Court: A few years pre-canon, Bradley and Jake hook up every year at the Navy Ball. They spend the night making each other jealous with other people, even though they know they’re going to fall into bed together when it’s all said and done.

Chasin’ That Desire: Set immediately post-mission, Bradley undergoes a minor surgery for a dislocated shoulder from ejecting. He and Jake patch things up, and Jake helps him through his rehab as their feelings for each other grow stronger.

Forever’s in Your Eyes: After an outdoor barbecue party in their backyard, Jake and Bradley lay in their hammock sipping the left over wine. Bradley realizes he can’t wait another second before asking this man to be his forever.

Bubbles and Bubbly: a smutty story that is essentially just Bradley throwing Jake a surprise anniversary dinner and a night of romance at home.

Hey Stranger, This is Your Stop: After being stood up on a date, Finance Worker!Bradley and Business Executive!Jake meet when Bradley falls asleep on his shoulder while on the subway in NYC. They hit it off and Jake asks Bradley out on a date. (Part of a series of AUs set in New York City).

Through a New Lens: Photographer!Bradley meets Model!Jake at an underwear shoot for a fashion brand. Jake inquires about a private photo shoot with Bradley one-on-one once the underwear shoot is over. Potentially smutty, I’m not sure yet.

It’s a Date: Author!Bradley meets Journalist!Jake at a coffee shop while dodging a stalker. Jake buys Bradley a latte, and they hit it off. (Part of a series of AUs set in New York City).

Sparks Fly: Based on “Sparks Fly” by Taylor Swift, Bradley has been trying to figure out how to tell Jake how he’s been feeling for a long time. Bradley decides the best way he knows how to be sincere is through music, so he plays a song dedicated to Jake one night at the Hard Deck.

No title for this one yet, but a sickfic where Jake gets sick for the first time in years and refuses to accept help. Thankfully Bradley is too stubborn to let Jake handle it all alone.

Everything Gets Hotter (When the Sun Goes Down): A fic about Jake and Bradley’s honeymoon, featuring some of their activities during the day, and their time in the bedroom at night.

.. anyways cressida could always notice eloise reading something and tries to talk to her by either reading the same book or one journey jus offering the book “emma” (LIKE IN THE SHOW GUYS?!?) as a good read before she gets off on her stop OMDS and/or eloise always noticing cressida’s fashionable-ness for a fùckin 9-5 (yes cressida would be giving office siren absolutely) and maybe if the tables are turned, cressida is reading and eloise notices this and suddenly sparks up conversation bc she simply cannot shut her mouth (and replaying all the times she’s seen cressida in new outfits like the montage scene of anne hathaway in the devil wears prada LMFAO) n every tube journey they encounter each otha on, they go back n forth on their opinions on which eva book they’re reading atm OMGGGG n maybe on valentines one of them gives the otha a rose or a book before they get off SOMEONE RESTRAIN ME MY BRAIN IS WORKING OVERTIME 😭

- would also love to see more modern AUs in general like yes i loooove seein this pairing in different time periods, adapting to the ideas and limitations of that era MWAH to everyone who has been writing these i love you - let me kiss u on yo fùckin cranium MWAH !

- imagine a 1920s jazz girls creloise like idk who would be a jazz singer (maybe cressida??), havin them be in ‘flapper girl’ attire.. IDK id jus love to imagine them in that environment perhaps smoking from those thingies that held the cig itself

- not to stress this too much (i am) but i wanna see them as a 90s or def a 2000s famous pairing!! like both are singers!! i mean cmon cressida would hav an unbelievable stage presence w her amazing outfits we’ve seen in the show itself and eloise would be more punk-ish i suppose!!

or eloise remains a singer and cressida is a model?! but in both situations it’s like they despiseeee each otha or at least eloise does of cressida bc of her overall appearance and the message her looks send (i.e. similar to bridgerton era blah blah expectations etc)

but then they hav to date as a publicity stunt to push down rumours that they hate each otha or maybeeeee penelope is a news outlet they’re trying to get the jump on by going ‘noooo we don’t hate each otha we’re actually dating!’ (they do hate each otha but they fall in love obvs)

or penelope is one of their publicists and has set this up??.. or they’re forced to write a song together IDK this can go any which way but i was inspired by the song “maybe” by emma bunton as a song cressida would DEFINITELY sing OR “let me see” by Morcheeba

man idk Cressida jus gives me the vibe that in this AU she could be equivalent to kylie minogue or a brit pop icon of sorts regardless or Kate Moss if u went w the cressida as a model version AND MAYBE ELOISE AS A PHOTOGRAPHER??? IDK!!!!

(im referencing the original film w angelina jolie but go wild if one were to write this, which most like won’t happen but oh well 😭)

A grin formed on his face after he had stepped out of his dressing room and saw YN in the distance, her back surrounded by three bodyguards, the backstage pass dangling around her neck. She grinned as well as soon as she spotted him, and her feet started to carry her faster over to him—until she ran down the hallway and flew into his arms. Harry had already awaited her, arms widely opened, knees slightly bent, and now wrapped one arm around her back while the other steadied her butt as she wrapped both legs around his waist.

“Hey, love,” he whispered into her cheek and pressed several kisses to the soft skin. “I’m so, so, so proud of you,” Harry could hear her whisper into his neck, feeling her arms hugging his neck and shoulders closer. “Thank you, love.”

He felt his heart flutter and tears of pure joy forming in his eyes. He knew that this would’ve never been possible without her by his side, without her constant support and love, and the way she always built him up again if something didn’t work out. She gave him the strength to do this, to try new things, even though they might could turn into the worst nightmare. She had helped him build his career further and further because she always had his back—during every late homecoming because he needed to finish that one recording in the studio, during every breakdown because he got overwhelmed, during every press or paparazzi storm he had to stand through.

YN had always been there for him, loving expression on her beautiful face and open arms in which he could sink and hide if he needed to. She had been his everything from the first moment on, and now, they shared this too—just like they would share a lot more that was coming their way.

“Pretty girl,” he whispered to coax her face from his neck, and the singer smiled his bright smile as she finally leaned their foreheads together, legs still tightly wrapped around him. “There she is.” YN smiled at his words, and without loosing another second, she dove right into the long-awaited kiss—relished in the feeling of his soft, perfect lips on hers, of his strong, large hand wandering from her back to the back of her head to hold her in place, and in the familiar but nonetheless still exciting taste of his kisses.

The couple parted with labored breaths but leaned their foreheads together again. YN gently let the tip of her nose run along his nose and peppered his handsome face with kisses. “You were great—as usual,” she grinned after they had opened their eyes and Harry had let her stand on the ground again. “Glad you enjoyed it. What about the outfit?” He wiggled his brows, and YN giggled before pulling his face back down to her. “I will show you how much I adored said outfit when we get home,” she mumbled against his lips in a teasing tone, letting a low growl rumble out of his chest and laughing softly into their next kiss. “Can’t wait for that show.” His voice was as deep as it could get, and a delicious chill ran down her spine.

Jeff cleared his throat behind Harry’s back, and YN chuckled again before letting her fiancé go. “Ready to take those pictures, handsome?” She asked, and Harry laced their fingers together and raised her intertwined hands to his lips to kiss it. “With you? Always.”

harrystyles I am beyond grateful for this milestone in my career. And it’s only possible because I have people who always support, love, and cherish me. Starting with my fans and family and ending with my gorgeous fiancée, who is always there and keeps my compass on track.

They were born into wealth beyond a commoner’s imagination. They traveled in private jets and went to the most prestigious boarding schools. They had holidays all over the world and ate the most delicate dishes.

They were invited to exclusive fashion shows and designers begged for them to wear their clothes.

Universities allowed them to simply walk onto any campus of their choosing, as Admissions knew they would have a robust endowment in their future from having the heirs to the wealthiest families as alumnae.

It was by pure chance they never came across each other, but once they turned 21, they were alerted of their arranged marriages.

“What?!” shouted the normally placid Wednesday at her parents, visiting during spring break.

“Darling…how else do you think we keep wealthy? We arrange for you to marry only from the best families…” Morticia tried to sooth her angry daughter.

“Please tell me you’re not trying to marry me to a cousin.”

“No, we’re not those types…” Gomez also had a distaste of the elite marrying into their own family to protect their assets. “But Xavier is from a very good family in Canada…”

“I don’t care, it is 2023, no one has their marriage arranged anymore.”

“Yes, they do, darling. It is the way of our world…you like having money, correct?” Morticia all but threatened to cut her off if she didn’t comply.

That caused Wednesday to stomp off, ignoring her mother’s plea to at least look at a photograph of her intended.

Wednesday had no desire to see what this Xavier Thorpe even looked like; she would not be told what to do.

Vincent Thorpe was a bit more efficient with his son. He sent a text as Xavier painted in a loft his father paid for, simply saying:

You’ll be married in a year’s time or be cut off.

Xavier rolled his eyes; his father didn’t even deign to tell him his intended’s name.

He had a suspicion his father would arrange a marriage for him, but he thought he had until his thirties. He wasn’t sure why he was being married off so soon.

“Can I live with you over break?” he asked his best friend Ajax.

“Why?” as he knew Xavier lived in a posh loft in the nicest part of Toronto. He was visiting his friend while on break from film school in NYC.

“My father wants me to get married to someone I do not know…I want to see if I can make it as…an average person,” he did his best not to call his friend a “poor.”

That made some sense to Ajax although he thought Xavier would not last a week. He had known him since they were little, Ajax was the son of the Thorpe’s topiary gardener.

Xavier was so ill fitted to be a poor student that he had to borrow Ajax’s clothes, although the heir seemed to be having fun at the novelty of wearing a hoodie.

While in a NYC coffeeshop that only had one espresso machine and prepackaged baked goods, he met the most beautiful girl he had ever seen.

She was in an oversized sweater and looked a bit lost amongst the other students, but he introduced himself as,

“I’m Percy,” the fake name he would go by in his experiment. He didn’t want anyone to recognize the name of such a wealthy family.

“I’m Jenna,” she said, just as awestruck of him.

They slept on their best friend’s couches, and both decided it was the best idea to have run away from their betrothals.

“I’ll show my mother,” Wednesday thought vindictively.

Wednesday was living with Enid, her freshman roommate who had become her best friend. Enid lived with several other girls in a fashion college in NYC. The other girls weren’t exactly happy with how Wednesday barged in, but when she paid for their cramped apartment for the year with funds she happened to have in her purse, they stayed quiet.

Enid wasn’t exactly sure how to tell Wednesday that she wasn’t actually living as a “common” person because she didn’t have a soul sucking job just to keep a roof over her head.

Enid and Ajax eyed the other, both suspicious of each other’s best friend.

After they hooked up, they stopped caring what their rich friends were doing as they could take care of themselves.

All through break, Percy and Jenna spent as much time as they could with one another. Enjoying long conversations about art and writing, touring the New York libraries and museums. They even did an outdoor bonfire, clothed in a t-shirt and shorts. They both found it refreshing to not be around rich people who only ever spoke of their money.

“He’s an artist,” she sighed to Enid, “He’ll probably never make any money…my parents would hate him.”

Enid just grimaced and hoped her friend wasn’t about to do something rash just because she met a handsome boy and wanted to get back at her parents.

Wednesday truly did love Percy, she just thought him being an impoverished artist was the cherry on top.

Xavier, on the other hand, was willing to impoverish himself to be with Jenna as he knew he’d marry her before he married the unknown woman his father chose for him. He had no idea how an artist and a writer would make a living, but they would figure it out.

Since school break was about to end, neither could fathom leaving the other, they opted to get married at the local courthouse.

“How is this legal? You told him a fake name?” Enid thought she was about to have a panic attack because Morticia Addams was certainly going to kill her.

“Oh that. I simply slipped the Clerk a $100 to change my name when Percy wasn’t looking.”

It turned out that Xavier did the exact same thing.

The Clerk was very confused why both applicants were using fake names with each other, but he accepted the money with a happy face.

Enid and Ajax weren’t sure why the other looked so stressed at the events, but they both dreaded when their rich friend would tell their parents.

Xavier was confused when Jenna told him they’d meet her parents at the most expensive restaurant in New York and that she had something to tell him.

Morticia and Gomez were confused when their prodigal daughter was sitting with her betrothed, as they would recognize Xavier Thorpe anywhere, even if he were wearing an off the rack suit.

They kept a straight face for as long as they could when Wednesday told them with a smug look that she had married a man of her choosing and that any betrothal was broken.

“So…you met ‘Percy,’ fell in love, and got married at the courthouse to escape your betrothal?”

“Yes, and it’s all perfectly legal,” she insisted.

Wednesday was baffled when her parents had both started to laugh so hysterically that they fell to the floor with tears in their eyes.

Although it made her want to chew glass that in the end she ended up doing exactly what her parents wanted, she was glad that at least on some level she did choose Xavier.

They both thanked their friends and gave them each an apartment. Both had fainted at the luxury accommodations.  

“I am glad we’re able to keep our money,” Xavier confessed. “Being poor was terrible.”

“It really was, wasn’t it?” Wednesday could at least admit that, even if she was willing to go through with it to be with him.

“Want to mansion shopping for our summer home in Toronto?”

“Yes.”

He pulled her into a loving embrace and was glad that things turned out perfectly. He admired the matching rings on their hands, bands of black platinum, fire opals, and diamonds.

A rare and unique set, just like them.

Halloween 2023 marathon: 9-11

The Slumber Party Massacre (dir. Amy Holden Jones, 1982)

A serial killer breaks free from jail, but the local high school population could not care less. There's sex to be had and joints to be smoked at the latest slumber party. Anyone not invited to the party either aims to crash it (the horny high school boys) or stay at home trying not to think about how uncool they are (the new girl who's better at basketball than her catty peers). All will be drawn together once the killer makes his way into town with a handy power drill that totally won't be used inappropriately.

I saw this movie for the first time earlier this year and immediately fell in love with its goofy charm. Apparently, it was written to be a parody of slasher tropes. The movie isn't played for broad comedy, but the humor is ever present in both overt and subtle ways. There's also a blend of cattiness and affection between the female characters that reminds me of the sorority house dynamics of Black Christmas, and the dialogue is often hilarious.

However, for all the humor, there are some creepy moments. The Driller Killer's "love" monologue is skin-crawling-- even if it is followed by a glorious parody of "the killer should be dead but isn't" trope.

This is one I love showing to other people. Everyone usually falls over laughing by the end, so it's a great group movie, but even alone, it's a fabulous time. You can currently catch it on Tubi for free.

Eyes of Laura Mars (dir. Irvin Kershner, 1978)

Controversial fashion photographer Laura Mars starts having psychic visions of the murders of her associates right as the crimes are being committed. She and everyone she knows become suspects of the slayings. The police find it particularly interesting that Laura's photos, which pair high fashion with images of murder and violence, resemble the subsequent crime scenes. Confused and feeling guilty, Laura teams up with cynical investigator John Neville, hoping to track down the killer before she or anyone else she loves becomes the next target.

This is a new-to-me horror film I caught on Tubi. All I knew about Eyes of Laura Mars is that it was directed by Irvin Kershner, a journeyman filmmaker best known for The Empire Strikes Back, and written by John Carpenter (though tampered with by many before shooting began). The movie is essentially an American spin on the Italian giallo genre. You have the familiar setting of the fashion world, sexy models who become murder victims, a hapless protagonist drawn into the mystery, and some very nasty kills.

There's a lot I like about this film, but in the end it didn't completely work for me. Maybe it's because unlike the best giallo, the movie doesn't have that otherworldly, psychedelic vibe that makes an audience able to swallow the sillier parts of the story. This is a very grounded, gritty presentation of New York City, making the more outrageous things in the film (like the unexplained psychic powers) stand out and not in a good way. Faye Dunaway's performance also verges into unintentional camp, with her wailing like she's in a 1940s melodrama much of the time. And I love melodramatic 1940s movies with appropriately overheated performances, but when the rest of your story is trying to be more realistic, that approach just takes me out of it because it doesn't gel. (Don't even get me started on the final twist, which I can't decide if I find laughable or clever.)

And yet, this is hardly a bad film. What frustrates me so much about it is that there's a lot that's pretty great. The supporting characters aren't the deepest in the world, but they are likable, so when they got picked off, I actually felt something. The movie also has an appealing time capsule element in its presentation of NYC during the height of the disco era. The fashions and the music are dated in the best way.

Despite my complaint about Dunaway's campy moments, Laura Mars is an interesting protagonist. She takes her art very seriously despite the derision she receives from her critics. She doesn't allow anyone to push her around, be it her boozy ex-husband, hostile reporters, or the police. She clearly loves the models, make-up artists, and other associates who work with her, and Dunaway does well lending a genuine sense of bereavement to the character as her social circle gets picked off one by one. However, I feel like the movie doesn't do much with her and she doesn't really have an arc.

I just really wish this film were a better version of itself. However, I can definitely see myself rewatching it someday, so maybe knowing the twists will make me better appreciate what is there. I don't know.

The Curse of Frankenstein (dir. Terence Fisher, 1957)

From adolescence, Baron Victor Frankenstein has had one dream: to cheat death. He and his research partner Paul Krempe delve into the mysteries of life, managing to reanimate a dead dog. Paul is satisfied with this achievement, but like a Disney Princess, Victor wants more. Like, creating a superbeing from bits and pieces of corpses more. This does not end well. At all.

It isn't spooky season without some Hammer Horror. I really have a hard time picking a favorite Hammer film, but The Curse of Frankenstein is definitely up there. Peter Cushing is so perfectly amoral and charming as Victor Frankenstein. I love Colin Clive in the Universal movies, but Cushing is my favorite in the part.

I've always admired how this movie sets itself apart from the Universal series without overdoing the opposition. The Universal movies were influenced by 1920s German expressionism, whereas the Hammer films go for more of a Victorian gothic meets explicit (by 1950s standards) sex and gore vibe. The sets and costumes are always wonderful in these films. I really love Cushing's glorious jackets, particularly the emerald green one.

<spoilers down below-- beware!>

Curse is also interesting for its frame narrative with Frankenstein telling the story from prison the hour before he is to be guillotined for his crimes. No one believes there was ever a creature and Victor wants everyone to know that, hey, he didn't commit ALL the murders. What's most fascinating about the frame story is the way it presents Paul, Victor's former tutor and research partner. Throughout the story, Paul is an unheeded voice of conscience tormented by the crimes Victor commits to achieve his goals. It's also implied Paul is in love with Victor's fiancee Elizabeth, and that this passion ignites further resentment against Victor on Paul's part because Victor clearly does not care about Elizabeth at all but is going to marry her anyway.

The film ends with Victor begging Paul to tell the authorities about the Creature, but Paul acts as though Victor is insane or just making it all up. He doesn't want to save Victor-- but is that because he wants to see justice done?
